Gymea Baptist Church
In this sermon Marc wraps up our series in Chronicles, focusing on the Lord’s commitment to his plans and purposes and the invitation to ongoing faithfulness “while we wait”. 2 Chronicles 36:15-21
This week’s sermon was a first-person narrative in which Marc explored the question of faithfulness from the perspective of Manasseh. The premise was that the majority of Manasseh’s reign, which was marked by compromise, was influenced by the outcome of his father, Hezekiah’s rebellion. Seeking to ensure Judah’s future, he followed the example of his politically successful grandfather, Ahaz, rather than his faithful father. It wasn’t until Manasseh was imprisoned that he reconsidered his father’s example and realised that faithfulness is its own reward. 2 Chronicles 33:1-20
As part of National Baptism week (an initiative of Crossover Australia, part of the Baptist movement) we set aside this past Sunday to focus on baptism. In particular the commitments that baptismal candidates make when they are baptised. While the actual wording may differ across different denominations and church traditions, the general idea is remarkably consistent and linked with the symbolism of baptism. Acts 9:1-19a

Our Senior Pastor Marc Rader leads us through the story of Simeon presenting Jesus at the Temple. Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple for purification and to the Lord for their first born son. The story unfolds in Luke chapter 2 as Simeon blesses Mary and Joseph and speaks a prophesy over Jesus. Mary and Joseph engage on a journey of faith. We also need to do this and marvel at what this story is saying to us this time of year.

Every parent has heard their child complain "it's not fair" at some point. Fairness seems to be something we are all concerned about, even more so when we think we are being treated unfairly, or when we see others get more than we think they might deserve. The parable of the workers in the vineyard teaches us something about God's attitude to fairness, where we see that The King of the Kingdom lavishes grace and generosity on us, according to His goodness and resources, not according to our work or worth.
So as we enter into the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, we pray you will see God as the generous abundant giver who gives more than we need or deserve and recognise His work and provision in your life. Jesus is a masterful storyteller and teacher. In response to a question about how many times we should forgive our brothers and sisters, Jesus tells the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. It's a challenging story, meant to help us recognise how much we have been forgiven by God, contrasted with the comparatively little we have to forgive others. This message explores 5 aspects of forgiveness and to help us understand God's will for us - that forgiven people are forgiving people.
Forgiveness can be incredibly difficult at times, however it's something that God demonstrates over and over to us, and the expectation is that we do likewise as we follow Jesus as our saviour, example and Lord. Nehemiah 7:1-5 looks at a time after the completion of the wall, where Nehemiah is appointing people to important roles to fulfil the purposes of God. Even though they were in effect bouncers or security guards, worship leaders, and priests - we can learn from those Nehemiah appointed. Matt Willis our Associate Pastor explores how we too must be people who Care holistically for those around us, how our Character and integrity is forged in the time we spend with God, and how there is at times a Cost to being part of the plans of God.
So what is God inviting you into today? Is it perhaps to care more holistically for someone he's placed in your path, or to develop your character and integrity by spending time seeking and knowing God. This week our evangelism coordinator Belinda Lakelin continues our series in the book of Nehemiah, Renovation: Rebuilding for Purpose. Belinda looks at opposition from Israel's enemies in Chapter 6 in the form of fake news, fake prophets and fake friends - and explains how Israel's actions that caused the exile in the first place are reoccurring all over again! It's a problem of the heart that no exile or wall can fix, but God remains true to his promises and will one day send a Saviour to fix the issue at heart.
The wall is a signpost to show that God was at work and was the help and hope of Israel. We too can be signposts that point to God's faithfulness and presence in our lives, as we continue to live lives that trust, reflect and honour God.

This week we return to our series on Nehemiah - Renovation: Rebuilding for Purpose and we look at how the trouble and conflict that was facing God's people outside the wall of Jerusalem suddenly moved to being trouble and conflict INSIDE the wall and how it threatened the mission of God. We'll look at some principles of healing difficult situations and how they applied to this instance, and how we might use them in our lives today.
Truth-Telling, Justice-Seeking, Grace-Giving and Peace-Making are powerful principles that we can adopt in the difficult interactions of our life, as we continue to follow Jesus the Prince of Peace. We pray God uses this message to bless and encourage you today.

An epilogue this week. Jesus's Kingdom of Heaven parables from Matthew 13 are bookended by two interactions with this family and his hometown. The response of his hometown is one of disbelief and dishonour as they could only see the humanity of Jesus, not his Divinity. Familiarity has bred discontent.
So let's be a people who see Jesus's power and wisdom and recognise that the fullness of God lives in Jesus. Let's be people give Jesus the honour and the place in our lives that he deserves.

Happy Easter! He is risen! This week's message is from Easter Sunday in which we look at Ephesians 2:11-22 to explore part of what Jesus accomplished in his death and resurrection.
Part of Jesus' purpose in his death and resurrection was to establish the church as a new humanity; little patches of purple. I hope that any of you who feel a bit on the outer, who feel a bit blue or red, have been encouraged to join some purple people and continue to follow Jesus!

In this week's message we begin our Easter series exploring an important, but often minimised, part of the Easter story and that is the temple as a lens to understand what Jesus accomplished in his death and resurrection. Jesus himself said, "I will destroy this temple and, in three days, rebuild it." Our text is Mark 11:12-20 where Jesus curses a fig tree on his way to the temple.
The bad news of Easter is that Jesus condemns fruitlessness in our lives as he did the fruitlessness of the temple. The good news of Easter is that in three days he places himself as the branch from which true fruitfulness comes. Let us remain in him.
For a second week in a row we are looking at Nehemiah chapter 4 and how the people of God responded to opposition. This week Belinda Lakelin, our evangelism coordinator, looks at Nehemiah's response to ridicule and opposition and what we can take away from this.
Every great project faces challenges and how we respond is critical. Nehemiah's commendable and challenging prayer reminds us that the purposes of God are worthy of all our passion and reminds us that God is not forced into a course of action that goes against his character. This allows us to pray with all our heart, and look to God to provide what we need to achieve all he calls us to.

In a brief return to our theme for 2022 - Renovation: Rebuilding for Purpose - we jump back into the book of Nehemiah. We pick the story up as Nehemiah and the people of Judea are in the "messy middle" and under pressure from their opponents and internal friction. Nehemiah's response in the face of these obstacles is instructive for us as we face our own difficult situations.
Seeing the 'hidden' hand of God in the rubble of our da-to-day struggles is a critical discipleship practice; enabling us to act with courage as those who are confidence that God is at work even if appears a bit 'hidden'. This week we continue our exploration of what it means to discern the invitation of God together by looking at one of the most significant turning points in the entire Bible; the conversion of the Gentiles. This momentous event was accompanied by a vision from heaven and the leading activity of the Spirit but still required discernment. In this message, Roxane Lawler, identifies three principles we can use to discern the invitation of God together.
Having a posture of preparedness to hear God's invitation, looking for patterns, and partnering with others are all helpful principles for discerning the work of God. What can you be doing to be prepared to hear from God? How has God spoken to you in the past? Who can you partner with to discern God's invitation? As we continue our series exploring how the people of God discerned his invitation we turn to the example of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and the people of Jerusalem who waited for God under immense pressure.
Jehoshaphat and his people waited for the Lord in a crisis rather than scrambling to solve their problem. This ability to wait under pressure was developed in the normal rhythms and patterns of following God. The seeds sown in the every day situations bore fruit in a crisis. As individuals and a community of faith let me encourage us to do what we can in our day-to-day lives to trust the Lord so that when the moment of trouble comes we will be able to imitate Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah.

As we continue our study of Nehemiah's memoirs as part of our theme series "Renovation: Rebuilding for Purpose" we come to a curious text. Nehemiah 3 contains a long list of the people who repaired the wall of Jerusalem. On the surface, this list is a testimony of a group of people who said 'Yes' to God's plans and purposes, but behind the scenes we see again the mysterious interaction between human and divine activity. This background activity reveals an important principle for the people of God.
Will your name be included on the list of those who said 'Yes' to involvement in God's plans? I hope so. For, when God's people are united around God's purposes things happen.
This brings our first foray into Nehemiah to an end - we'll pick it up again in a few weeks time. Next week we begin a four week series exploring how God's people discerned the invitation of God for them. This series will be accompanied by Life Group material that will not directly follow the sermons but will dive deeper into discerning the invitation of God together. In doing so he gets a first hand view of exactly what he and the people of Judea are up against. There is an important principle for us as we engage in our own work of renovation.
Sometimes, the first work of spiritual renovation is to take a good hard look at ourselves; to see where the walls have been broken down and the gates burnt. This requires a vulnerability that we are often unwilling to face; and yet, without a recognition of where we find ourselves there will be little ability to engage in change. Let us ask God for the courage to review our hearts and minds; as individuals and as a community of faith.

In today's message we consider what we can learn about Jesus - his ministry, mission, and motivation - in the account of his encounter with the Gerasene demoniac.
In Jesus' rescue of the Gerasene demoniac - a man who could not help himself - we are reminded of Jesus' authority and power, of his mission to "bind up the strong man and plunder him" and of his compassion for those who are drowning and unable to help themselves. The invitation to participate in the mission extended to this man who had spent only a few hours with Jesus is also a challenge for each of us to go to our own people and tell them what God has done for us and how he has shown mercy on us.

Jesus changes lives and there is both an immediate and dramatic change as well as a long-term, life-long transformation. The New Testament uses imagery and metaphors to describe both. For those of us whose journey to faith may have started in a Christian home and whose "conversion" wasn't particularly dramatic, the organic images that focus on the life-long change can be a particularly helpful.
Regardless of your journey, however, Paul's reminder to Timothy is a reminder to each of us - tend the gift of God - in cooperation with the Holy Spirit let us continue in what we have learned, participating in the mission of God with the people of God.

This week we continue our series entitled: Lives Changed by Jesus. Ten stories from the New Testament of people whose lives were changed by a single, common factor: encountering Jesus. This week, Belinda Lakelin reflects on the transformed life of the so-called "sinful" woman who anoints him in Luke 7:36-50.
The actions of this unnamed, but forgiven, woman stand in stark contrast to Simon's. In the fact of his deliberate shaming of Jesus, this woman, motivated by her great love, seeks to honour Jesus with what she has in her hands. Her actions are a powerful example for each of us to honour Jesus who is worthy of all honour.

Ten stories from the New Testament of people whose lives were changed by a single, common factor: encountering Jesus. Some sought him out, some were found by him. Some met him face-to-face, some were told about him by others. Some were social elites, others were outcasts. Some encounters were dramatic, some took place in ordinary circumstances, but they were all miraculous; lives changed by Jesus.

This past week we celebrated what we called Shoutout Sunday a chance to take a deep breath after 12 weeks of lockdown to express thanks for those people who have kept us sane and for those small victories that we've experienced, it was a little bit of fun. As we enter spring and the hope of easing restrictions in the next month or so. This week we launch a new sermon series entitled "The Topography of Discipleship: Finding Our Way as the Church Today" Our world may be changing but our central mission - to make disciples - does not. A changing world does, however, require a new map. It is my hope that this nine-week series will provide us with a set of foundational and formational concepts, ideas, and terminology that will help us find our way to creating an atmosphere, an environment, a culture or a current that makes following Jesus natural and normal.
The core concept of this series comes from a book written by Bobby Harrington and Alex Absalom entitled, Discipleship That Fits in which the authors outline five relational contexts that God uses to help us as we apprentice to Jesus. Matt Willis and Marc Rader released a series trailer a couple of weeks ago that you can listen to to get an overview of these - though we hope you'll pick it up in the messages.
In this first message we look at the Divine Context; our time alone with God - and focus on the "why". In other words, what does spending time do to help us mature as followers of Jesus.

This weekend in Sydney we entered another period of lockdown due to a resurgence of COVID 19. This lockdown is the first city-wide lockdown since March 2020 and I think it's fair to say that we're all a bit rattled. This sermon was pre-recorded before the lockdown was announced and doesn't directly address this situation, but I hope that wherever you are, this message will speak to you and your situation.
In NSW it also happens to be the school holidays and we have returned to a series that we started in the last term break entitled "On This Rock" in which the sermon is a reflection on a particularly foundational text for the preacher. This week is one of mine: the call of Jeremiah.
When God invites us to participate with him in his grand plan to renew and restore all things we can, like Jeremiah, all too easily identify reasons we are not suitable for the task. However, at the end of the day, we are called - not to be perfectly suitable, but to be faithful. I hope and pray that this week you will be faithful to the call of God and look to his provision to enable you in the task at hand.

The message was given on the occasion of a baptism service in our evening congregation. It is a word directed to those who were about to be baptised. I hope that, by listening in, you will be challenged and encouraged as well.
If you have placed your faith in Jesus but have not yet been baptised let me invite you to consider if that might not be your next faithful step as you follow Jesus. As you follow Jesus, guard your heart, listen to Jesus, and sow the seed you have been given that others might begin to follow him too.

This week we heard two different sermons on two different passages in John's gospel. The first, preached in our morning services by Roxane Lawler, explored Nicodemus' night-time visit to Jesus in John 3 and what we can learn about following Jesus from this interaction.
As we spend time with Jesus, bringing our questions and confusion, we are invited to recognise who he is and receive the life he offers which may challenge what we are currently grasping that is holding us back from taking up the right to be called children of God.
Nicodemus' journey to recognise who Jesus was and to receive life from him was a long one but one that, I hope, has provided you with the encouragement to continue to follow his example.

As we continue to explore John's unique perspective on following Jesus we turn to yet another "I am" passage; "I am the Good Shepherd" in John 10 where we learn again that following Jesus begins with Jesus.
Before the ethical imperatives or moral models of following Jesus there is a simple directive for those who want to follow Jesus: learn to recognise his voice and follow him. This familiarity comes through individual disciplines but also in community as we learn together to hear his voice and follow him.

This week we continue to explore the ways that John describes discipleship in his gospel. In this message, the first of two different sermons this week, considers Jesus' invitation to follow him; the light of the world.
When we follow the light of the world we are being led to the Father from whence we receive an identity, a purpose, and a mission. Like Jesus himself, we find our identity in relationship with the Father, are invited to know the Father more and more, and to join the Father in his restoring work.
May you be about the work of a lighthouse keeper this week; revealing Jesus and participating in rescue when opportunity calls!

As Term 2 begins we launched a new series entitled "Following Jesus in John's Gospel" in which we want to listen to John's unique take on discipleship. This week we conclude our series in Revelation 2-3 that we've called "Seven Letters, Seven Lessons" in which we have been listening to the discipleship lesson that Jesus has for the churches. In this final letter to the community of faith at Laodicea we hear one last word and, like all last words, it contains a very important lesson.
The outcome of our faithful public witness is to invite others to follow Jesus and, by doing so, to be transformed. This supernatural work requires supernatural resources. Jesus urges us - through these words to the Laodiceans - to buy from him all we need for the work he has sent us to do.

As we continue to listen to the discipleship lessons in the seven letters to the seven churches in Revelation 2-3 we are up to the church at Sardis who are encouraged to complete their "deeds" which Jesus declares are unfinished.
The work of public witness is both important and urgent and is the work that we need to be finishing. In our urgency, however, let us not forget that we are doing the work of Jesus. Turn to him, ask for the eyes to see the opportunities to participate, the courage to step into them, and the wisdom to know what to say or do that will further the work of Jesus.

Our theme as a community of faith for 2021 is Go...Make Disciples and today we start our first discipleship series entitled 7 letters 7 lessons, in which we'll be exploring the discipleship lessons in the seven letters to the seven churches, in Revelation chapter two and three. In these letters Jesus himself calls these seven churches to greater faithfulness. In this sermon we listen in as Jesus speaks to the believers at Ephesus commending some things and condemning something very critical.
Unless there is enough public evidence to convict us as followers of Jesus, we are not doing the work of the church. This, according to Revelation 2 is our first love, public evidence of our love for Jesus and our love for others.
Let those who have ears to hear let them hear.

Today we begin a short series entitled "The Space Between" in which we will explore the new normal that God is inviting us into as a community of faith. We always face changes and the journey from the old normal to the new normal can be really unsettling. It is, however, a critical journey and we need courage to press on and to resist the temptation to retreat to the old, comfortable, normal.
In this message I want to reflect on one of the fundamental invitations I believe we have been given over the course of last year - the invitation to hope.
I trust that the Holy Spirit will give you the courage to hope rather than retreat to control and certainty. May the example of Ahaz remind us of the need for hope and trust.

Praise the Lord! Praise him with songs; giving voice to the voiceless praise of the created order. Praise him with our lives; aligning our lives with the purpose that our great and loving God has given to us.

Merry Christmas! 2020 has been a year filled with uncertainty and we face a strong temptation to seek control to re-establish our sense of certainty. The birth of Jesus, however, offers little in the way of certainty, but plenty in terms of hope. This is the focus of my reflection this Christmas.
We pray that this Christmas you will choose to walk the path of hope rather than retreating to the fortress of certainty and that you find the courage and empathy to live in the flickering light of delicate hope in Jesus and his renewing and restoring work.

In this week's message, we will be diving into Psalm 89, which reflects on the eternal promises of God to David's house and the tension of faith. The psalmist experiences as he tries to hold together these forever promises and the demise of the monarchy.
While the precise nature of our tension may be different from that described in Psalm 89, we too face the discrepancy where faith and hope meet contrary experience, even though we celebrate the birth of Jesus and all that means for us, we still cry how long and remember these cries of the faithful are cries of hope.Declaring that we will allow the promises of God to define our reality.

Instead of focusing on the seed or the sower, she focuses instead on the soils of the parable of the soil as told by Jesus in Matthew's gospel and explores the state of our hearts and those around us as an important part of our consideration as we talk about Jesus to those we know.

Disciples are those who make disciples and so this is where we must begin.

Creation invites us to discover that the World was made by God. God's laws help us to understand more about God. We can invite God to help us discover more about ourselves. And extraordinarily, we can actually know God Himself, through the person of Jesus.
Perhaps you need to visit a physical or metaphorical dark sky national park this week, and make space to discover that God is nearer than you think. This might be something you've done before, or perhaps its for the very first time.
Whatever stage you're at, in your journey following Jesus, This Psalm invites us to recognise that the Lord is our Rock and our Redeemer. Jesus is inviting us to know God, to walk in relationship with him, and to know that God can be trusted whatever we face.

This week, as part of our series “Songs of the People” we are looking at Psalm 25. This acrostic psalm of lament challenges us to consider what we truly need from the Lord.
When we face trouble in all its forms - and we will - we are encouraged to lift up our need to the Lord and to request rescue from him. Psalm 25, however, also encourages us to ask for guidance to know how to walk in the way of the Lord while we wait for rescue. This is our greatest need!

Joan was the first missionary sent out from Gymea Baptist Church in 1966 & spent over 50 years in service in Venezuela. This is an interview with Joan at GBC 18 October 2008 with Paul Summers.
This week we conclude our series entitled “The Church Reimagined” and I return to a foundational text for us: John 20:19-23 where Jesus sends his followers, then and now, to continue the work he had begun.
I don’t know how you’re feeling about the changes and uncertainty that are swirling around us, but I hope that you take comfort in the enduring plans and purposes of God and, more importantly, that these unchanging plans and purposes will provide you with a reason to be on-purpose in your involvement in them through the power of the Spirit.
The more things change, the more the plans of God remain the same. Amen.

When we are clear what matters we can count the right sorts of things, allow what really matters to shape our ministry, and celebrate what really matters. While counting has its place, and ministry is important, celebration - such an important part of these parable - unites us like almost nothing else.
Even in these extraordinary times, we know that Jesus is changing lives and that this is worth celebrating. We can also be on the look out for what really matter locally and celebrate that as a community of faith.
We hope that as you keep your eyes open for local expressions of Jesus at work you will feel a profound unity with others who share the same vision, mission, purpose, and values (even if the language is a bit different) and are led to celebrate all that Jesus is doing!

As we continue to consider what it means for us to be a community of faith, We want to continue on from where we left off last week when we considered what means to be a community of communities. If we are going to find connection, belonging, and our place in God’s mission in the household of God (to use Paul’s imagery) who is going to lead these smaller communities?
The success of the church’s mission is close to the heart of Jesus and he will generously resource every household of faith with all that is necessary. You are part of His gift to the church. Are you available? Are you willing to say, “I’m ready coach, put me in!”
As we make ourselves available, we will be given all we need to join in and help the community of faith become mature and attain to the whole measure of the fullness of Jesus Christ. Are you available?

In this message I reflect on Paul’s use of “the household of God” to describe the community of faith and its implications for us.
Imagine if every follower of Jesus found their place in God’s mission. If every follower knew where they fit. If every disciple knew they belonged; felt connected; and encouraged to respond to the invitation of the Spirit. I think it would be a game changer. Not only for us in COVID times, but when we gather together again.
Let me encourage you to find your household - make it an object of prayer, join a Life Group - find where you fit and join in with God’s mission as we rise to become a holy temple in the Lord.

In our passage today, Hebrews 12:4-13, the author continues to reframe the experiences of his hearers; changing how they perceive their struggles and hardships. Opposition and difficulty is not evidence of going in the wrong direction, but is the sphere where God teaches his children to be holy.
Our holiness is more than a private, internal experience but a public, external commitment to follow Jesus and participate in his plans to renew the world. Jesus himself was opposed and rejected and he told us that we would be too. The difficulties of our struggle is the place where God trains, equips, mentors and disciplines us to be holy. So endure!

Today we come to the soaring reflection on faith as the author of Hebrews continues to encourage his readers, and by the Holy Spirit us, to endure and to fix our eyes on Jesus.
So who is in your Legends Row? Take some time this week to thank God for them and maybe to thank them in person. And who can you be encouraging and cheering on to fix their eyes on Jesus?
As we continue our exploration of Hebrews we have come to the end of main block of teaching. But before the author turns to his soaring reflection on faith in action he summarises his teaching to this point and urges his readers, together, to live by faith.
Let us consider how we might spur one another, not to shrink back from participation in God’s purposes, but to endure. And let us keep meeting with others who will spur us on to that end.
This week we continue our exploration of Hebrews and the perfect forgiveness that Jesus has won for us and the tremendous implications this has for us. This is the culmination of the author’s central idea: that it is impossible to drift away from such a wonderful patron.

This week is an extended interview between Senior Pastor Marc Rader and Karina Kreminski Co-Director of Neighbourhood Matters a ministry dedicated to helping Christains be salt and light in their community and to learn to love their neighbours.
Our sermon series is focused on the Book of Hebrews and in this week’s message the author continues to explore the greatness of Jesus’ ministry as high priest by focusing on the greater promise that Jesus mediates and the purpose of that promise in the people of God.
Jesus has what it takes to bring about the purpose of God by fulfilling the promise of writing the law of God on our hearts. We can place our hope in him.
Today we continue our series in the letter to the Hebrews entitled Anchored and Roxane Lawler, our Children’s Coordinator tackles the tricky character of Melchizedek. This mysterious Old Testament character has already made an appearance in chapter 5, but it is here that the author really explores Melchizedek as a pointer to Jesus.
Rox addresses this text by answering eight questions raised by the text. You’ll hear the questions asked between each answer. It’s a bit different but a really effective way to engage with a pretty densely argued passage.

Due to Covid-19 we never had the chance to explore our fifth and final value of our church Trust-Worthy. In this episode Marc Rader explains and explores what it means for us right now to be Trust-Worthy.
This week we continue to explore our values as a community of faith and are up to Others-Focused. Associate Pastor Mark Coleman gets us thinking about how this value might show up in our behaviour as a community of faith.
What small things can you do this week to be a bit more Others-Focused? When we do so we are living as Jesus did and as his followers - like Paul - have tried to do ever since.
What do you wish to learn or experience about God? Who are you going to approach to learn from? And what have you learned or experienced of God that you can share with others? These are critical questions that every follower of Jesus should be asking as we seek to be Whole-Life Learners.
Allan Demond is the Senior Pastor at New Hope Baptist Church in Melbourne and is a good friend and mentor of mine. Allan reflects on 2 Chronicles 16:9, “The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen the hearts of those who are fully committed to him.” Does your heart need a mentor? Is there chaos at the board table of your inner life? Jesus stands ready to strengthen your heart so that you are more able to live out your commitment to follow him. Make eye contact with him. See the delight in his eyes and take up his invitation.
The values of a group, organisation, team, family, or community are reflected in their actions. Even if the values are never explicitly stated, they are on display in the things that group does and how they do them. Let us practice being Big-Hearted by being consistently generous in the little things. And as we do this in the simple, little ways be on the lookout for the invitation of God to be a bit more generous; as he opens our hearts to those around us.
Creating and maintaining margin in our lives so that we are available to participate with what God is inviting us to do is a practice that is central to following Jesus no matter what community of faith you may be a part of it. When we offer what margin we have to God he can do miraculous things with it so let’s be sure to do just that.
We are launching our new series “The Crux of Community: The Values That Shape Us”. This is an introduction to a set of values that, as a leadership, we believe will give us a common language to use as we seek to take seriously the invitation to join in with what God is doing as we follow Jesus.
Regardless of whether you consider yourself part of the GBC community of faith these questions are important ones to ask: Are you still committed to following Jesus and are you committed to doing so as part of a particular community of faith? Let these questions shape your prayers this week.
Our Father is always at his work to this very day - present and active and asking us if “we’ll give him a hand”. As a community of faith that is seeking to be spiritual first-responders we are called to be aware of his activity and familiar with the patterns that suggest God is at work. Be ready. Be present. You Are Here.
We’ve all felt anxious. Whether it’s a mild case of the butterflies or the chest-constricting, heart-pounding, on-the-verge-of-panic that keeps us awake at night, we’ve all experienced anxiety. I imagine that most of us would say that we would like less anxiety in our lives, but what if anxiety were an invitation from God?
In a society where long hours seem to be pretty normal and where too many people seem to be lost in some form of workaholism we need a better theology of work; one that allows us to work hard, enjoy our tasks when we can, but not get lost. For those of who follow Jesus this begins with living for Jesus and increasing our love for him.
In this message, the second this week, we continue “The Feels: A Heart Encounter With the Good News” looking at FOMO - the acronym for the Fear Of Missing Out and consider what difference Jesus makes to this very modern anxiety.
The assumptions that drive FOMO are ultimately lacking in wisdom. The good news is that Jesus invites us into the full and wise life following him.
In this message, the first of two this week, we continue “The Feels: A Heart Enounter With the Good News” where we are exploring the difference Jesus makes to our emotional lives. This message, given by associate pastor Mark Coleman, focuses on shame; an emotion that we are all familiar with.
Shame thrives in secrecy. It seeks to convince us that if people found out they’d reject us. The good news is that God knows it all and has not left, but leans towards us in Jesus. This should fill us with courage to begin the process of exposing the darkness of shame to the light.
One response to disappointment is to lower our expectations to such a degree that we stop hoping for anything. This isn’t a great response, but is especially devastating in a relationship with God. When we are disappointed with our reality, we are able to bring that to God and, through gratitude, hold on to the promises and character of God. This stance of faith in the face of disappointment is profoundly biblical (even if it’s not that easy).
This week we begin a new series entitled “The Feels: A heart encounter with the good news” in which we will be exploring a series of emotions and the difference Jesus makes. Emotions are given to us by God and are part of our full humanity, but these precious gifts can sometimes overwhelm or cripple us. How does the renewing work of Jesus impact our emotional lives? If envy can be defined as (pride + vanity)/kindness then increasing our kindness will cause our envy to shrivel. Will you take up the challenge to be kind this week? And will you do so keeping in step with the Holy Spirit so that those acts of kindness might be truly fruitful?
Who you are when no one else is watching is as good a definition of character as I’ve heard. How we act when we are on our own, with no one around, is a pretty good guage of our character. What about God? Who is God when he is “alone"?
On his own, God is all about salvation, all about kindness and compassion. Jesus’ birth in a backwater town, almost unacknowledged, points to this essential character and reminds us that God’s intense passion to save us is not about us, but about him and invites us to turn to him.
Merry Christmas! Welcome to the GBC Sermon Podcast and a special Christmas message. The birth of Jesus really is good news of great joy; a declaration of hope that invites us to live our lives differently. This Christmas I pray you will find the courage to take God up on this extraordinary invitation. May God bless you this Christmas season.
Have you ever felt like you are in free fall? When you are uncertain about everything except the certain disaster that is surely coming your way? And when things look grim, where do you find hope? Hope that goes beyond the hollow optimism of “she’ll be right”?
Taking God’s perspective on the future isn’t easy; just ask Ahaz or Joseph or the first generation of Christians. But his perspective invites us into hope that what we face is not the end and to live out that hope in all that we face.
Life is full of examples of doing hard things for the good that doing that hard thing will achieve. Going to the gym, having a hard conversation, completing the degree, holding the line on a decision, and on and on it goes. When we are convinced that the outcome is good and worthwhile we are willing to do what might be difficult to achieve it.
There are many “ways” that promise us the good. As at Christmas, so in our life. We are told what we have to do in order to have a great Christmas and a great life. Jesus invites us onto a different path; the path of holiness. Where are you walking this Christmas?
It’s a bit of cliche, but world peace wouldn’t be a bad Christmas gift would it? And if not world peace, what about strong, courageous leadership? Leadership that isn’t self-seeking or self-serving and that releases us to build a better future. Fear and hope are very, very different. Leadership that plays to our fears limits us and cripples our response to need. Leadership, like that which Jesus offers, that points to hope invites us to participate in a greater future. Our hope in Jesus requires us to make a decision to act for hope rather than fear.
The calendar has ticked over to December which means that Christmas mustn’t be too far away. Of course, there have been hints and indicators of this in our shopping malls and pop-up ads for months, but once the calendar reads “December” we know it’s finally, really close at hand. As we enter the period of time known as “Advent” it’s worth reflecting on how we can prepare for Christmas as followers of Jesus. This week we begin a new series entitled “Ring the Bells” in which we will seek to answer the questions, “What is Christmas really about?” and “What difference does that meaning make?"
“As the Father sent me, I am sending you.” These words of Jesus to his followers represent what one author calls “the greatest commission”. Regardless of what we title this commission, it is certainly a profound invitation and one that we cannot even begin to hope to complete in our strength or wisdom. Thankfully, Jesus doesn’t simply give the commission and leave. He also provides the resources necessary.
This week we pause before our Christmas series and return to the words of Jesus sending his followers on the same mission he was sent to complete and focus on the gift of the Holy Spirit as the enabler of our participation.
A wise person once observed that the only constant in our world is change. Change is inevitable and often brings positive benefits. I’m sure you can think of a change in your life that has had massive impact in your life. Changes can be great, but the process of change can be a bit messy. But if you aren’t willing to embrace that process, you will not reap the rewards either.
While this is a message given specifically to the community of faith at GBC, I believe that it is applicable to every believer. We must all be willing to embrace the process of change if we want to see the new work of God in our lives. Are you willing to commit, afresh and anew, to following Jesus into the sometimes messy process of change?
As followers of Jesus, like every area of our lives, we do not mature or grow in isolation. Off the top of my head I can think of a handful of people who’s lives as followers of Jesus impacted my own. Beyond the influence of others, the times when I have grown and matured the most have been when I’ve faced challenges and difficulty. In those times, when I have been stretched I have also grown. I’m sure the same is true for you.

We love hearing stories of people who have done extraordinary things with their lives; those who have made a real difference in our world. These sorts of accounts are inspirational, but we can sometimes fail to see the connection with our life. The extraordinary achievements seem so far from our capacity that we end up only inspired in heart, not in our actions.
Have you ever crossed a creek on a branch and heard it crack? When this happens you generally don’t hang around on the branch but seek to get to the other side as quickly as you can, spending as little time as possible on the uncertain bridge that you no longer totally trust to bear you weight. We sometimes experience this same uncertainty when a relationship is compromised. What if it our core beliefs that “crack”?
John’s gospel often gives us a very different perspective on Jesus’ ministry than the other three do. One of the starkest is the night Jesus was betrayed. Where the other gospel writers describe the Last Supper, John focuses on Jesus’ actions in washing his disciples’ feet.
What is your response to something new? Are you what they call an ‘early adopter’? Or, do you wait until whatever is ’new’ sticks? Or, do you resist it? Chances are, your answer to that is different in different contexts. But how do we respond when God invites us by his Spirit into something new?
Have you ever found yourself somewhere you’d rather not be? If you’re like me, when we find ourselves in these situations we often wonder what God is doing to us. How might our perspective change if we knew God had brought us there so that we might join in his plans for others?
Passion. We all have it. It may be about a particular relationship, hobby, sport, author, or entertainer, but regardless of focus, we are all passionate about something or someone. And our passion is usually evident to those around us; how we speak, how we act, even how we play board games.
Of all Jesus’ miracles, changing water to wine is one of the most unique. As the first of the signs that John recounts in his gospel it also holds an importance to understand all the rest of them. So what meaning are we to derive from this first sign?
The only constant is change. I don’t know who coined that phrase but it’s pretty spot on. Sometimes things change so quickly in our lives or our world that it is difficult to find enough time to reflect on what has happened and its significance. It’s often in the reflection, however, that we gain important perspective on our lives.
After the debacle of the golden calf the Lord does something so expected that we can actually miss its significance; he forgives his people and renews the covenant with them. See? I can almost hear you think, “So? Isn’t that what God does?” And you’re right. But why does he do it?
Just when things seemed to be going so well. In faithfulness to his promises, the Lord has blessed the descendants of Abraham, rescuing them from Egypt and bringing them to Mount Sinai where he has entered into a unique, exclusive, one-of-a-kind relationship with them. The Lord has promised to be their god and the Israelites have promised to be his people. Then, as Moses is receiving the instructions for the tabernacle so that the Lord can live with his people, they go and do something that jeopardises the whole thing. Will there be a happy ending here? Or destruction in the wilderness?
Sometimes, reading the Bible can be hard work. The instructions given to Moses regarding the construction of the tabernacle is one of those sections. At the same time, we believe that all of Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness - even long sets of instructions about curtains, frames, bases, altars, lamp stands, and priestly garments.
The stories in Exodus are absolutely foundational to the entirety of Scripture. That is true of the mighty acts of the Lord’s rescue of Israel from Egypt, but is even more true of the central act of the book - the establishment of the relationship between the Lord and Israel. However, our appreciation of this event is often sidetracked by our misunderstanding of the Law and our expectations of the Lord’s promised blessings. As a result our appreciation of our relationship with the Lord in Christ isn’t as deep as it could be.
The Ten Commandments are one of the most well known sections of Scripture and form a constitution of sorts for the nation of Israel, describing the kind of people they are to be in relationship with the Lord. But they beg the question: Can the people of Israel live up to these ideals? Can we?
This week, as we come to the Ten Commandments, senior pastor Marc Rader explores this well-known text in a first person narrative in which he speaks from the perspective of a character in the text; in this case, Moses.
When we take the time to look back on the relationships we share, we tend to find that the dynamics of those relationships have changed throughout the ebbs and flow of life. But although they may look different to when they first started, the intention seems to remain the same. So it begs the questions, when we look at God’s relationship with us, what has changed, and what remains the same?
The book of Exodus continues to move toward its climax – the establishment of the relationship between the Lord and Israel – we might think of it in terms of a marriage (not a perfect analogy, but a useful one). If what follows in chapter 20-24 is the wedding, then this week’s text (19:1-8) is the Lord’s proposal to Israel – and what a proposal!
How do you handle opposition? It can end up consuming our mental and emotional energy; distracting us from nearly everything else. Is there a better way to handle it? Especially when the opposition is related to our faith?
Where does generosity begin? Under what conditions are we able to be truly generous? In Chapter 16 the Lord provides bread for his people, but this chapter is about more than lunch, it invites the Israelites and therefore us, to reflect on God's character and the kind of life we are called to as a result of his daily provision.
How can we move from a sense of fear or dread about moments or events that are coming up in our lives, to a sense of expectancy and excited anticipation? How can we live expectant of hearing what God invites us to do? And how can we live ready?
We can easily find ourselves waiting for the perfectly packaged invitation of God, before we are willing to take our next faithful step with Him. And whilst God does sometimes speak to us with audible clarity, often His invitation for us to act, comes to us more subtly. So what are we listening out for? What form might God’s invitation to us take?
Stepping out of your ‘comfort zone’ & into the ‘courage zone’ takes wholeheartedness, vulnerability and requires us to show up. Through courage, we can find unimagined places of peace, connection to ourselves, our community & even God. What circumstance calls out for you to take your next courageous step?

Hear Scott Higgins from 'A Just Cause' In the last decade, people within Australian Baptist and other Evangelical churches became very involved in campaigns around international justice issues such as global poverty, human trafficking, and fair trade. Yet many were not as involved in campaigns with a more local dimension, such as refugees and asylum seekers, indigenous disadvantage or homelessness. A Just Cause aims to remedy this. It will be a vehicle by which Christians can reflect on and act on national justice issues.
