In light of recent U.S. mass shooting events, the first person I could think of to bring to speak on this was Dr. Bob Baugher. We spoke in an earlier episode about grief, loss and suicide here. Many of the principles discussed by Dr. Bob can be applied to many life situations, not just in response to mass shootings.

In this episode I chat with Private Practice Psychologist and author, Dr. Gerald Drose. Dr. Drose is based in Atlanta, and runs a successful private practice with four locations and at least 30 therapists. We discuss what inspired him to write his fiction memoir, chat about various characters in the book, and dive deeper into contemporary issues in Clinical Psychology - such as how his practice has changed due to the pandemic. As a person who struggles with long form reading (we talk about that, too), I genuinely enjoyed reading his book.

In the second half of our conversation with Dr. Diane Finley, we focus on one of her professional specialties, Sport Psychology, which is actually called "Sport Exercise and Performance Psychology." Listen in as we dive into a wide range of topics to see how Psychology is applied to the wide world of sports, and what to expect if one pursues this career path. It's a great introduction to the field, and useful tips for future professionals! Dr. Finley also answers listener questions that were sent to Dr. Jack in advance.

In Part 1 of 2 of our conversation with Dr. Diane Finley, we focus on her professional "origin story,." We dive into her progression from her high school academic interests and family circumstances which led to her present profession in Psychology. Wake up! It's "Wellness Wednesday" again, and this week's episode was inspired by a listener email, initially from one year ago, and what has occurred most recently. The focus is on whether we choose to give up on a passion, or dream, or goal, due to the large number of logistical challenges that lie ahead of that goal. Can you commit to pursuing it, knowing (or not knowing) what lies ahead? Maybe we can call it a "leap of faith?"

In this "How to" episode we break down the specific parts of a typical scientific journal article in the field of Psychology. This can be useful for students who are new at reading original empirical research, or in need of guidance to organize a research paper. Those who are non-students might find this information beneficial in understanding the scientific research process that psychologists use.

Hello friends, I wanted to take this opportunity in this end of year episode to express my gratitude to my listeners and supporters - to discuss what I'll be doing this summer (there will be bonus episodes) and planning for new episodes (edit:) COMING IN JANUARY, 2022! In this episode I also discuss the importance of following, subscribing and supporting your favorite independent (indie) podcasters. Update: I talked about my affiliate links near the end of the episode, but decided to remove them from show notes, to keep things tidy. And the sponsor I mentioned has been included in this episode.

In this episode my co-host Aye, and I chat with Dr. Regina Koepp, Geropsychologist -clinical psychologist specializing in geriatrics - host of the podcast, "Psychology of Aging" about her amazing origin story, career arc, and her latest project, the Center for Mental Health and Aging. We discuss the importance of community colleges, common misconceptions about mental health issues with elderly persons, and why a student pursuing a career in psychology should seriously consider the field of geropsychology. We only scratched the surface, and hope to have Dr. Koepp back in future episodes!

This week I have the pleasure and honor to pick the brain of Dr. Richard Nisbett, who recently released his memoir, "Thinking." He is one of the most influential social psychologists of our time, especially in the realm of social cognition. We covered a wide variety of subjects, from his storied career, loss of his close friend of 55 years, Dr. Lee Ross, aspects of his research he wished received more attention, multicultural psychology topics such as the bamboo ceiling, and more.

As part of our series on May's Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage and Mental Health Month, I have the privilege of introducing my very first interview guest, Aye Khaine, my better half. She's Burmese (or Myanmar) American, has a Master's in Social Work, and she takes us on a brief journey to understand Myanmar culture, working with refugees in the states, and explore aspects of the current military coup and tangible actions we are taking to help our friends in Myanmar. I hope by listening to Aye, we can reflect upon the immense diversity amongst Asian Americans, that one of the takeaways of the AAPI Heritage month is to learn that what we think of as Asian, is quite diverse and cannot be grouped together into a simplistic, unified group of people.

In this episode I talk about one of my favorite psychological concepts, which is Attribution Theory, and its primary components, dispositional and situational explanations. This is a core theory within social psychology, specifically social cognition. The main reason I chose this subject is how relevant this is to our everyday life, and how we make judgments of people. Listen in for my challenge to you, to be more more a Situationist thinker, not a Dispositionist.

Thinking of a career in Psychology? Then let’s get you into graduate school, shall we?
Since I have so many undergraduate college student listeners, in this episode I discuss the best ways to prepare for applying to graduate school, by starting early. We will go through a typical list of what is required in the application process, by using my Alma mater, University of Houston Counseling Psychology program, as an example. We will cover strategies to make you a better candidate, from the perspective of someone who was on both sides of the application process, as an applicant, and as a reviewer on selection committees.
Part 1 of the episode includes my take on current events, answering listener mail.
Part 2 begins the discussion about applying to graduate school, around 23:00 mark.

I did not plan for this to include many academic subjects, but I couldn’t help myself - so follow along where I share many personal experiences, and talk (yes, we must talk about this) about what action we can take as individuals to create a better society for all of uS. Boy, that sounded lofty, eh?

Okay, I admit that title is a bit provocative, but there’s a grain of truth to it, so listen to the episode for more! The subject of Academic Integrity is the main focus, with some main takeaways from an Academic Integrity conference I recently attended. I also dive into the subject of cheating from my perspective as an online instructor, and some advice for students, and mainly, why students should care.
Lastly, I declare a new initiative: “From Chegg to Chuang” as a mission for my own classes.

Hey I made a blog (under development!); impending winter doom; I’m not drinking I swear; we attended a pro-democracy march for Myanmar in Houston; my wife’s personality quirks; and apparently sponsoring products without sponsors; wait, I have FANS??

In this podcast, I walk through the process of overcoming what in academic circles we call, “ABD” or All But Dissertation - that period of one’s academic career that feels like no man’s land, because you’re virtually graduated, except for this research paper. This also applies to those pursuing a master’s degree but are stuck on their thesis paper.
7 Steps to get unstuck:
Step 1: Acknowledge the emotional and psychological barrier
Step 2: Assess your current status (for graduate program and paper)
Step 3: Find support group or peer
Step 4: Reach out to committee chairperson
Step 5: Working on your dissertation
Step 6: Oral defense
Step 7: Buy me a coffee When you’re done!

In this episode I respond to a listener’s situation about living in India where the stigma of mental illness is very high, and how to deal with it. I turned on the mic and gave some of my thoughts about the issue of stigma, as well as some suggestions on self care. This is a common issue one would learn in a psychology course, especially in the field of clinical or counseling psychology. I also include some personal anecdotes, as usual. Don’t tell my in-laws, I kind of talk about them.

I’m using the free, online text book from openstax.org, “Psychology” 2nd edition. Long form lecture covering major topics in the Lifespan Development chapter of an Introduction to Psychology course. I cover major psychological developmental theories, including Freud’s psychosexual stages of development, Erik Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development, and Piaget’s Cognitive development theory (and Kohlberg’s moral development). Also discussed various life stages and events within those stages, from infancy (attachment theory) to adolescence, to adulthood. This kind of lecture, or chapter, does little justice to the field, in that it’s an immense field of research within psychology, that one can take numerous classes and earn advanced degrees in developmental psychology. My hope is that students get a general sense of the field and concepts within it. Update:
By the way, up till now I have been going by my long held nickname of “Dr. C”. Well, even though I use it in this podcast, I recently dumped the “Dr. C” nickname, as I explained in a later podcast here:
So I now use "Dr. Jack" since it's more friendly and approachable - and let's call it a day.
Original show notes:
I realized that I have listeners from around the globe, so I think I owed them an introduction since they are not in my classes. I ramble on, talking about my education history, with many sidetracks along the way. I finish up talking about future podcast subjects that I hope will be helpful to those interested in the field of psychology.
