In this episode of Digital Catapult's Industrial 5G Uncovered series, we speak to an innovative Cambridge-based startup: Vision Intelligence. Vision Intelligence develops adaptable video analytics solutions leveraging artificial intelligence to help manufacturers become more productive, compliant and energy efficient.
As part of work with WM5G, Vision Intelligence has partnered with AE Aerospace, who we met in episode 1, to conduct a use case combining AI, 5G and edge computing to address inefficiencies throughout supply chain processes. In this episode, we discuss the company’s work as part of the 5pring programme and the success of the use cases for Industry 4.0.

Digital Catapult's Industrial 5G Uncovered series continues with an interview featuring another 5G early adopter located in the North East of England - Sunderland City Council.
As an emerging smart city, the council has taken a leading role in a variety of citywide initiatives in Sunderland, trailblazing the way for the next generation of digital infrastructure. By being one of the first UK cities to deploy 5G mobile connectivity, Sunderland has become a frontrunner in advanced digital technology. As a result, the council has received several accolades, including the prestigious Civic Innovation in Technology award in 2020 from Harvard University.
Sunderland Council is also a core member of the 5G CAL (Connected Automated Logistics) consortium - a project that pioneers the use of 5G technology in an operational automotive environment to drive operational efficiencies and improve productivity.
We sat down with Liz St Louis, Assistant Director of Smart Cities for the council, to discuss Sunderland’s 5G initiatives for both smart cities and last mile logistics. Headquartered in Birmingham, AE Aerospace specialises in the manufacture of volume prototype components and performing precision machining operations. With the majority of company operations taking place in the aftermarket support field, they have strong links with the UK Aerospace and Marine sectors. AE Aerospace are working together with WM5G - the UK’s first region-wide 5G innovation company and part of the UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS), 5G Testbeds and Trials programme - to run trials to demonstrate the role that 5G can play in increasing productivity within the manufacturing and aerospace environment. AE Aerospace will be the first UK SME to deploy a 5G private network, powered by BT’s EE mobile network.
