The 30 Percent Podcast is a podcast that focusses on the Kenyan music industry. The name is derived from the astonishing stat that between 30% - 40% of music played on Kenyan radio stations is Kenyan.
Our goal is to see this percentage go up significantly.
We will also broadly discuss global music industry trends and contextualize them through the lens of two music producers based in Kenya.
We start with a conversation about growing old on the music industry leading to us talking about what we feel the industry needs (6:06), also, "If you had a music label in Kenya, who would you sign?" (12:04). Next, Iyanii says he is being snubbed by event organisers and we then talk about what it takes to throw your own show (32:19). After that we talk about Bien on the 2026 Afronation lineup (47:23), and finally, new music reviews (50:22).

That leads the boys into a conversation on what makes an international artist and why we may or may not have any currently (11:00). Arbantone hit maker Stoopid Boy, who has been in the news recently for beefing with media personalities, turns his aim at Willy Paul on Mungai Eve's Platform (35:26).

He has also worked with brands such as Coca Cola, BBC, Netflix, and so much more. Eric Musyoka has also established Decimal Media with Decimal Records, DRK Films, and his band DCMTRS under its umbrella. Musyoka is the chairman of the Recording Industry of Kenya (RIKE) an organization that aims to represent the collective interests of producers of sound recordings in Kenya.

They then talk about what they feel could have been done better as well as the things they feel aren't valid pushbacks to the different performances.
Sam and Afam then get into other bits of news. French streaming giant Deezer seems to have come up with better solutions to the problem both they and Spotify are facing. Sam breaks this down. Also, music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs has been in the news recently for bad reasons. Afam speaks on the accusations and expresses his distaste for the man and situation.

The Recording Academy's 2024 Grammy nominations are public and a number of African Categories have been included in the coming ceremony. Nigeria and South Africa score big with numerous nominations, also afro beat sensation Rema seems to have been snubbed despite his global hit "Calm Down" doing numbers and having an unprecedented impact. Sam and Afam discuss the awards and give their opinions on the nominations.
Following their recent announcements, Spotify says a song must earn 1000 streams or more annually to be eligible for a payout. The boys discuss this news and what that may mean for artists on the platform. They then get into a conversation about other revenue streams mentioning a Kenyan artist who seems ti be doing exactly that. Xenia Manasseh landed songwriting credits on American and Rnb songstress Brandy's Christmas project, Sam and Afam talk about this and give her her flowers. Finally, CMOs get their license reinstated meaning hey can collect royalties on behalf of artists again, will this be beneficial for Kenyan artists?

Kipepeo artist Udulele recently released an EP and had a performance at Kuona Artist Collective, Sam and Afam both attended the show. They discuss the performances of Liboi, Tanzanian artist Salum Matata who had an electrifying performance, and finally Udulele, who had a great set.
They then talk about the Echoes concert they attended at the KICC. Kinoti and Ethan Muziki had amazing performances, and their supporters showed up in droves. The boys attempt to break down the show and give a detailed review. This then leads into a conversation about mainstream vs niche artists, what they think and fell that the niche artists need to do to survive in the Kenyan industry that seems to be dominated by the mainstream sound.
Following that conversation, Sam and Afam discuss the Trace Music Awards that were recently held in Kigali, Rwanda. After that they talk about the recent performance on the Colors performance by Kenyan singer and songwriter Lisa Oduor-Noah, and they give her her flowers!

Kenyans are a little annoyed at TZ musicians for allegedly failing to promote collaborations with Kenyan musicians. Nadia Mukami seems to be the latest to talk about the issue, accusing Tanzanian artist Darassa of the same after the release of her recent single, Siko Sure. This allegations lead the boys into a conversation on whether artists should have etiquette when it comes to releasing music and what they think that should look like. They then proceed to talk about who should be doing what when a big artist collaborates with a smaller one.
On to some music industry news. Veteran Music producer Eric Musyoka attempts to solve the problem of music distribution and royalty collection with his outfit RIKE. Sam and Afam talk about this and the possibilities his solution offers. They then mention record company Sony's coming launch of a 10 Million dollar music fund for Entertainment Startups in Africa.

Earlier in the week they also sat down with two incredible artists for a conversation, and they shine a little light on whats coming.
Drake recently dropped his latest project, For All the Dogs, and the album had a lot of mixed reviews from fans and critics all over. One of the loudest voices, former hip-hop artist turned podcaster Joe Budden of the Joe Budden Podcast pulled a response from Drake himself. This leads the boys to a conversation about who has the right to comment on music and eventually they begin a polarized conversation about critics. Afam is strongly against the idea of critics being valid in the music industry, while Sam attempts to argue for their existence. Afam also expresses his strong opinion about a popular Youtube critic, Anthony Fantano. They debate the necessity of critics, their objectivity, and whether they are more credible if they participated in the art they are critiquing.

Kenyan artist Steph Kapela recently took to Tiktok to talk about an issue he feels is a big problem in the Kenyan music industry. Kapela goes on to educate the public, informing them of the reason they are hearing more international acts on radio instead of their own local artists. Sam and Afam dissect the video and talk about Payola. They attempt to give a brief educative session on what it is and how as well as where it started. As the conversation around Payola progresses, Afam argues that artists here should figure out how to use it to their advantage, while Sam tries to push for the abolishment of the illegal practice. The trio get right into conversation. Antoneosoul talks about his hair and explains why he does not refer to them as "Dreadlocks" but rather refers to them as "Rastas". He proceeds to talk about what having Rastas means to him and his artistic expression. Conversation flows into an important topic, giving credit where it is due. In todays episode, Sam and Afam talk about the recent news that took the world by storm, the tragedy of the Titan and the 5 passengers who sadly lost their lives. They then get into the recent shows that they attended. Kipepeo Agency hosted a World Music Day show at The Alchemist with their artists as the headliners and the boys were "press" for the event. Afam attended and was part of a Gender Parity in Music forum centered around female songstress, Daada. The forum aimed to discuss women's representation in the music industry. Finally for the outings, Afam attended the Michael Carpenter Album listening party and recaps his experience.
Before the news, Sam had to get something off his chest, tune in for this weeks music industry rant. The boys then congratulate and talk about the new members of the Grammy Academy which include our own Sauti Sol and Karun & Xenia Manasseh's manager Fay. Spotify unveiled a project, a website dedicated to Afro Beats, and they give a brief review of the site and have some things to say about the project as a whole.

Afam was also in attendance at Groovy Jo's album listening party and he gives a brief review of the event. Onto the news! A win for African music? The Recording Academy (Grammys) Introduce a new category that will highlight and award different African music genres, the question of whether this is ultimately a good thing for Africa comes up as the boys discuss the topic. Streaming and distribution giants form the Music Fights Fraud alliance to fight music fraud, and while this might seem like a good thing on the surface Sam and Afam have a deeper conversation about it.
On to Local news, Radio Africa Apologize for the disaster of a show that was the recent Boys II Men concert after getting numerous complaints from fans and attendees. Also, A Legend in the Kenyan music industry, Eric Wainaina, reveals plans to launch a music label and discloses who his frist signee will be. Somewhere in that conversation, Sam talks about a dream he had of Sol Genaration's Nviiri the Storyteller and his future in music. Listen in to find out what thats about.

The conversation progresses into his transition from an artist into a music executive working behind the scenes.

Groovy Jo, who is affiliated with the Kipepeo Agency, released an album, and Alfayo talks about his involvement in the project, as well as what she has planned for the near future. The Talanta Hela Initiative suffers yet another set back despite its launch, Sam and Afam discuss the controversy. Also, Sol Generation's Nviiri the Storyteller released his debut album, "Inside Out" this week. The boys give a review of the project.

The following episode takes place between 11am and 12pm.
Sam and Afam intro the pod with the usual debrief of the previous week. Sam was super productive (pun intended) and Afam shares his experience meeting Kenyan music legends Nameless, Wahu & Nyashinski. The boys reminisce on the old shows they used to watch (24, The Sentinel & MacGyver). They then proceed to talk about local news starting off with Eric Omondi, who in a statement, describes the Kenyan industry as lazy when it comes to mixing, mastering and shooting music videos. He claims that our industry is stunted as a result, and urges us to do better (he also uses this as an opportunity to plug his upcoming music video).
The guys also talk about Elani, and speculate on whether we can expect a comeback from them. Boutross made the news after his passionate Twitter/Instagram rant against Prince Otach, a promoter who organized a UK based show that saw the likes of King Kaka, Femi One & Boutross perform at what was dubbed "the UK's Biggest Diaspora Festival" at the Royal Regency in London. According to Mr. Munene, Prince Otach did not treat them accordingly, and allegedly failed to pay both Boutross and his label mate Dope-I-Mean in full.

In more news King Kaka, Femi One and others receive praise for their recent show in London. On to local news now, the Talanta Hela Initiative experiences a set back, and Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Youths Affairs, and the Arts, Ababu Namwamba, vows to progress with its launch despite the opposition the Initiative has received.
