Jesus tells his followers that they are to be like people waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet or a faithful and wise manager because they know the master’s will and are to be on guard for any thieves and ready for the Son of Man, for those who are not ready will face severe punishment and those who are ready will be given more responsibility. Jesus’ response to the man concerned about his worry over his share of an inheritance is that one is to guard himself from greed—possessions—that one’s life doesn’t depend on what one has but on the One who gives them as depicted in the parable of the rich fool, for God the Father gives believers the kingdom and they are to be rich toward others, which reveals their heart. Jesus’ response to the accusation by the Pharisees that he’s not ceremonially clean because he did not wash his hands prior to eating at the table was that Jesus condemns this extra-biblical practice by the Pharisees by calling their attention to their lack of concern for inward sin by pronouncing “woes” of hypocrisy evident among the Pharisees and the scribes which results in the beginnings of a plot to kill Jesus. Jesus is telling his listeners about a lit lamp that’s hidden or a light put on a stand and the eye as a lamp of one’s body, that if they recognize Jesus as the light they let him shine and, if healthy, their eyes can see and the light enters but those who refuse light they are in darkness because accepting the light is obedience. In the last episode, we saw why Jesus was born: to deal with the problem of human sin through his death. Jesus kept the law perfectly and didn’t deserve to die. We don’t keep the law and do deserve to die. But Jesus’ death is about a great swap: he takes the death we deserve. The Old Testament finished with a problem: What has happened to God’s promises to Abraham? Would they ever be fulfilled? Would there ever be “God’s people in God’s Place under God’s Rule’? Humanity’s sin just keeps getting in the way. Adam and Eve messed things up in the garden, Solomon and the other kings after him messed things up in the land of Israel. The nation of Israel finds itself in exile without a proper King. This raises another question: what has happened to God’s promise to David that Israel would have a good King like him forever? We have now come to the he heart of the Bible story. Because God’s plan all along was to fulfil his promises in Jesus. He succeeds where Adam failed, He is the fulfilment of all promises to Abraham and to David. Jesus fulfils all God’s promises and God’s plan for the world. The natural question is how? As a consequence of Solomon's disobedience by worshiping other gods, God allows other nations to assail the Kingdom Of Israel and it is divided into two. Jigsaw puzzles can be great fun but can also be confusing. This is the way many of us feel about the Bible. We may know lots of individual pieces of the Bible - like Daniel in the lion’s den or David and Goliath, but we’re not really sure how all these stories fit together. In fact some of us may not even know that they do fit together at all! All this can make reading the Bible confusing or frustrating. We may find ourselves just dipping into the Bible at random like it’s a phone book or a dictionary. We need to get a feel for the overall story of the Bible. We need to see the big picture.
