Relationship-Building, Grade 3

From maintaining healthy friendships to balancing academics and extracurricular activities, today's students face a wide variety of circumstances for which it is not only helpful, but sometimes crucial, to be able to call upon a strong relationship-building skillset. Research has shown that relationship-building skills have myriad applications in school and far beyond. They help people foster friendships, increase their self-confidence, improve their coping skills, and learn how to handle conflict constructively.

Relationship-building involves the ability to establish and maintain healthy and rewarding relationships with diverse individuals and groups. It also includes the abilities to communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate peer pressure, and seek and offer help when needed.

In this Unit, students will learn about and work to establish foundational relationship-building skills. Each Topic provides content and activities designed to teach specific concepts and build interpersonal skills, but be sure to return to the Unit's guiding questions and social-emotional frameworks to emphasize the broader concepts of relationship-building.
