In this episode we delve into the fascinating world of Cretan goddesses, focusing on Diktynna, Britomartis, and Artemis. These deities offer a rich tapestry of mythology and history that spans from the ancient Minoan civilization to classical Greek times. Diktynna, often associated with Britomartis, was a revered goddess of mountains and hunting in Crete, worshipped since the Minoan era (circa 2000-1450 BCE). Known for her escape from King Minos by leaping into the sea, Britomartis was transformed into a goddess by Artemis, symbolizing freedom and protection.

As we explore the connections between these goddesses, we see how Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, absorbed many attributes of her Cretan counterparts. The Temple of Aphaia on Aegina, dating back to the 5th century BCE, stands as a significant archaeological site that highlights these links. This temple showcases the syncretism between local deities and the Olympian pantheon, with Aphaia embodying aspects of both Artemis and Britomartis/Diktynna. Join us as we uncover the fluid and intertwined identities of these powerful goddesses and their enduring legacy in ancient Greek religion. #CretanGoddesses #Mythology #AncientHistory #Archaeology #MinoanCivilization #GreekMythology #Diktynna #Britomartis #Artemis #TempleOfAphaia

greekmythology #maenad #dionysus Maenads were the "raving" wild women of the Ancient Greek and Roman world. Or were they? So much that has been shared about the ecstatic rites of Dionysius was written by ancient male authors who never witnessed theses 'savage' festivals of wild women for themselves. So much of what we know about the Bacchants of the wine god was written as backlash in response to women leaving their homes to 'rave in the woods' with wine, and dancing and (perhaps) raw flesh they consumed in their intoxication with the God. Join me, and let's discuss all the fantasy writings of men, about the secrets of uncontrollable women. #wildwomen #antlergoddess #hornedgoddess #deergoddess #archaeology #greekmythology #divinefeminine #myth #ancienthistory #goddessproject #bacchus #bacchaparty #bacchanalia #womensrites #womensfestivals #womenempowerment

One of the most powerful divinities of the ancient world, Persephone is the queen of darkness and light. So fierce was her rule that the ancients refused to say her name out loud, and referred to her only as 'maiden' or 'mistress'. She ruled the souls of the dead and returned each spring to bring life. Abducted by Hades, and rescued by her Titan mother, Persephone is a goddess of survival and evolution. Through her the ancients were able to navigate the cold and torturous lands of Tartarus (the death chambers). She was the only light in the darkness, the saviour that offered salvation, the shelter from the storm. Join me, and lets view Persephone for the powerhouse she became despite the desires of her husband, or the demands of her mother.

How much of our lives is left to chance? When life got tough, or when things went supremely well, the Romans turned to their favourite goddess Fortuna to praise, or blame, for their fortunes. Her power over abundance, fate and the rise and fall of empires large and small was unchallenged. She was the gatekeeper of random failure and success, and as such, the most powerful deity of all. Join me, and let's talk about how Fortuna continues to influence and motivate our modern world, and how we are still, for better or worse, victims to her blind, untethered charms.

And that's before we get to her children! Mother of divine and mortal children, Aphrodite is a symbol of all aspects of the divine feminine, from fertility to fierceness. trigger warning - brief discussion of self-murder

The Harpies have long been depicted as screeching daemons, with half woman, half bird bodies. They are the hounds of Zeus when you piss him off, and Jove (Zeus) help you if you try to eat around them. The Furies are something even more frightening. They were goddess born before Zeus was even a blink in his mother's eye, and a ball of rock in his father's belly. They guard the prisons of Tartarus and are Hades' lieutenants of torture and pain. Triangles have always been a tool of power and mystery. From prehistoric cave art, and hand sculpted figurines, the pubic triangle, the 'original' geometric shape, has fascinated archeologists and anthropologists for centuries.

In addition, Egyptologists have come up with several answers to the question, 'why triangular pyramids?' using myth and modern interpretations of the symbolic meaning of geometric shapes? But could there be another answer?

Join me in this informal talk about the human experience of the natural womb, and why caves continue to be places of reflection and divine vibration.

The version of the Greek Artemis has long been a thorn in my side. As I collected more and more stories of a goddess that can be as vicious as she is caring, and as vengeful as she is protective, I realized early on that she was being purposely overlooked as a powerful divinity of righteous rage and dark vengeance. She is very clearly a goddess who kills without a second thought — a mercenary, a goddess who takes no prisoners and often offers no forgiveness, her arrows shoot to kill, and she is more fearsome than historically imagined. It is this Artemis who draws the loyalty and commitment of her followers, particularly women, as her main victims are men whose hubris is punishable by death. (Dr. Carla Ionescu, from her book "She Who Hunts", 79)

It is time we remember how this Goddess of the Throne ruled the realms of the living and the dead, and how her relationship with her son Horus, inspired the most impactful relationship in Christianity, Mary and Jesus.
