Have you ever stayed up late at night pondering how different bands compare to one another, or how your favorite band falls amongst a tier system of bands? Well, we certainly have...and now you can too, with Friday Night Tiers! Katie and Jenna are best friends of fifteen years who have stayed connected through their love of music. Friday Night Tiers will deep dive into different music genres by exploring old favorites and discovering new gems. Listen in every other Friday to see what makes a band a Tier 1!
Happy Halloween from Friday Night Tiers! In todays episode, Katie and Jenna dig into how halloween music came to be what it is today (it has had a crazy and spooky journey, those darn tritones), we learn that futurama tried teaching us about music a long time ago, and create a mini halloween playlist with a wide variety of songs! Come get scared with us!
This week, Jenna and Katie get back to their roots with a good ol' fashion tier list! Ska is one of Katie's favorite genres and we explore some of the classic third-wave ska bands that keep the genre alive! Learn about where Mustard Plug, Big D and the Kids Table, and Less than Jake get their names (the stories are insane) and see where your favorite ska bands fall in our tier list! We also share stories about recent shows we went to and sadly come to realize we can't hang like we used to.
In our second deep dive episode, we delve into the world of Blink 182, formerly known as Blink. Blink 182 was initially known for their crude humor, or as Katie calls it, toilet humor, but they evolved into a band that produced hit after hit and left a lasting mark on music and became one of the most well-known bands of our time. Jenna and Katie discuss the journey that this band has been on from 1994 until now, making stops along the way at some of the best and worst moments of the trio's timeline.
We're back and trying something new this week! We are doing a mini deep dive into two of Anthony Green's bands: Circa Survive and Saosin. Comparing stats, albums, our experiences and overall awesomeness, we throw these two bands into a battle to see which tier these two bands fall into. Katie and Jenna also reflect on their best and worst concert experiences and discuss concert going as they gear up for the next two months, which is jam-packed with concerts. We've been DYING to reach you to see which of Anthony Green's bands you like better!
This week, we take a closer look into one of Jenna's favorite genres - Synth Pop. Katie gets schooled on the genre and we dive into some pioneers of the genre as well as the new players. Listen to todays episode to see where we tier Crystal Castles, Depeche Mode, Tame Impala, and more!
Also, Katie and Jenna may or may not have gotten a tattoo based on one of the bands we've covered in the past.....which band could it be?!
We told you guys in Episode 1 that it always comes back to My Chemical Romance! Join us on our first ever "deep dive" episode, where we take a closer look at one of the bands we discussed in a previous episode. In classic Friday Night Tiers fashion, we tier their albums and discuss the concepts behind them. Listen to get a closer look at the origin of the band, what they're up to now, and hear all of the iconic MCR moments that we couldn't discuss in Episode 1!
Well, we thought we knew what Goth Rock was, but boy, were we wrong! Join Katie and Jenna as we get schooled on a genre that we apparently knew very little about, but now are in love with. We go back to the 70's and 80's to discuss some old classic bands that started the goth rock movement, like Joy Division, The Cure, and Bauhaus, as well as dive into some old high school favorites like Evanescence and HIM. This episode is special it helped us realize how much learning we have to do and this opens up a lot of doors for us. Will the older bands be able to compete in the tier system? Listen to find out!
Ahhhh, Pop punk. Some of our fondest memories revolve around this genre. Pop punk is kind of a dying genre.....or is it? In Episode 3, Katie and Jenna take a little more time than normal (sorry not sorry) to discuss some bands that are near and dear to our heart, and explore some new favorites! Blink 182, Man Overboard, Meet me at the Altar, Sum 41...and many more! We also have our first interview with hardcore Blink 182 fan, Marnie Stronk. We can't wait to hear about what you thought about our ranking of your favorite bands! #DefendPopPunk
In Episode 2, Katie and Jenna dive into a genre that is very oddly specific, but hard to define: Indie Pop Rock - you know it when you hear it. These are bands that have more of the pop rock feel, with synthesizers and other instruments to supplement their sound. We discuss bands like Glass Animals, The Kooks, Neon Trees, and discover some new favorites, with lots of female leads (we love)! This episode should have been called The Next Big Thing episode since we have seen a majority of these bands live at that concert. Enjoy and rock on!
On the first episode of Friday Night Tiers, Katie and Jenna dive into their history as friends and talk about where the inspiration for the podcast came from. Then, we dive into our first genre, Emo (It's not just a phase, mom!), and look at 10 different emo bands to decide which tier they fall into!
