Running back a fan favorite episode from SEASON 1..big news soon!
-Bryce and Liz
This week Bryce and Liz hop on the mic solo- without a guest. Get comfortable and join us for a chat between friends in recovery. We dive into Liz's recent drinking dream, how we use "smoke signals" like dreams as clues that it might be time to ask for help, and how Bryce practiced "recovery in action" when he put his elbow through a car door (he's ok!).
This episode is named after a concept that comes from writer Glennon Doyle; that the goal of the journey isn't to avoid the fire, but to realize that we are fireproof. We hope you walk away from this conversation with a little more faith in yourself, and with a smile on your face.
We sure did.

While Liz and Bryce remind us they're only the experts of their own experiences, they offer insight into navigating life's curveballs without the old coping mechanisms. They explore how change can feel especially raw in recovery, and how community and connection can help us get through the experience.
For Bryce, meaningful relationships, like his friendship with Liz, and his community help him show up, even when the rug keeps getting pulled out from under him. Liz emphasizes the importance of building trusting relationships and finding an anchor to help weather the moments when life feels out of control.
Most importantly, they remind us that it's okay to admit change is hard, and you are valid in feeling that way. As Liz says, you've survived 100% of the changes so far, and that's something to be proud of.

As life moves through seasons, each one calls us to shift our mindsets and behaviors. For Liz, adaptation was a survival tool during active addiction. She reflects on the delicate balancing act of trying to feel better while in pain, reaching for the only tool she knew at the time.
But even before taking her last drink, Liz began to shift her mindset—deciding she deserved recovery and happiness. Now, her focus is maintenance: doing the daily work to feel strong and supported. Whether it’s going to bed early, seeing a therapist, staying connected to friends, or being present, these tools help her navigate whatever life throws at her.
Bryce shares how he actively leans into the challenge of shifting his mindset—because it's something he can control. Every day, he identifies what's within his power to change and what steps align him with the person he wants to be. It's how he bends without breaking. And when he catches himself being self-critical, he pauses to reframe and practice gratitude.

She opens up about her lifelong relationship with anxiety—her ever-present companion through addiction, recovery, and growth. From white-knuckling through early sobriety to learning how to soften into support, Liz shares how her tools have evolved over time.
Where she once reached for a drink, she now reaches for her people—friends, family, routines, and clinical support that remind her she’s not alone. Because even when anxiety grabs the wheel, Liz has learned to breathe, check in, and return to what matters.
She leaves us with a simple but powerful reminder: you’re not alone, and it’s okay to want to feel better. Sometimes the most radical thing you can do is take a breath and take care of you.

Sharon shares a deeply personal story as a mother navigating her son Teddy's battle with substance use disorder. She reflects on the challenges of finding resources and treatment in a fragmented system—what she describes as a relentless “hamster wheel”—and the three years she spent with Teddy while he was in recovery. Throughout their journey, Sharon emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries, taking care of yourself, and meeting loves ones where they are.
By sharing her story, including the heartbreaking loss of Teddy to an accidental overdose, Sharon hopes to bring comfort to other bereaved families and spread awareness. She wants them to know they are not alone, and that a compassionate, understanding community is here to support them.
Teddy was so much more than his addiction. His legacy of open-heartedness, curiosity, and non-judgmental spirit lives on through the work of the Teddy Kradzinski Foundation.

Since his last appearance on the show, a lot has changed—most notably, Scott has written and published his first book. In Rise. Recover. Thrive. he opens up about the cathartic, sometimes scary, and emotional process of translating his personal journey into recovery onto paper, while spotlighting the work of The Phoenix movement.
Through the writing process, Scott reflects on what makes The Movement so powerful: the belief that those seen as "the problem" in society are actually the solution. By focusing on the strength in people and treating folks with dignity, we can all thrive and even reach back a hand to help those behind us.
Now, nearly two decades since founding The Phoenix, Scott seeks to memorialize the ethos of this work. Even if The Phoenix isn't the one to ultimately transform how our society approaches addiction, the ideas can inform those who come after, aiding them in carrying the movement even further.
Tune in to hear Scott's wisdom as we discuss what first inspired him to start this work, how that motivation has changed, and why thriving—no matter how distant it may seem—remains the goal, and much more.

For Bryce, mentorship has been non-negotiable. Whether it’s recovery, business, or just becoming a better human, he sees guidance as a lifeline. Liz? Not so much. She’s in a season of radical self-trust, choosing her own tools, her own path, and walking away from anything (or anyone) that doesn’t fit.
Together, they unpack what it means to seek wisdom without outsourcing your worth. It’s a convo about mentors, chosen fam, and how to keep the relationships that really see you.
Spoiler: Sometimes the best mentor is the version of you that finally says, “Nah, I’m good.”

While Bryce reminds us he's no expert, except in his own experience, he offers honest insight into what helped him regain confidence during his early recovery and beyond.
Although it can feel overwhelming and like there is much to make amends for, Bryce reminds us that making reparations doesn't happen all at once. The first step is supporting your wellbeing and building that solid foundation of support. Now in his 12th year of recovery, Bryce shares that overtime he's learned that we have no control over how others perceive us. We can only control how we show up for ourselves and the folks around us.
For Bryce, confidence has come from consistently working on doing better for himself and his community. Tune in as Bryce opens up about the challenges in early recovery, the lessons he's learned over the years, and how he's rebuilt his confidence.

At the heart of everything she does is a clear mission: to create meaningful impact. As a person in recovery from alcoholism and self-harm, Calli blends her lived experience with her knowledge of healthcare medicine and her skills at content creation to connect with folks far and wide.

Liz opens up about her discomfort with couch conversations. She shares that she's often hesitant to take up space talking about herself and her recovery, only wanting to share when she knows her words will be of service. Yet, it's conversations like these that allow Liz to feel truly seen, a feeling she's had to work through over time. Despite the discomfort and a potential for rejection, there is value in showing up fully as yourself. Liz emphasizes that it is those moments and conversations where true connection and healing happen.
Tune in to hear from Bryce The Third and Liz as they explore the power of sharing and vulnerability and how these moments deepen relationships and remind us that were are never truly alone.

For Liz, this holiday season feels different from years past—stirring up both joy and grief, and reminding her that recovery is an ongoing, non-linear journey. While intense feelings and memories have surfaced, she’s learning to hold both the joy and the grief, allowing herself to experience them safely and work through them.
Bryce shares how his relationship with holidays has shifted through his own recovery, and how he's reached a place where he shows up for celebrations how he wants to. Through cultivating a relationship with himself, he's learned how to navigate these big holidays, which in turn strengthened his relationships with his friends and family.

Bryce shares his experience as a single man in recovery; discussing what dating was like before he learned to set and maintain personal boundaries, and some of the wisdom he implements now. And as someone who was married before getting sober (check out Episode 129 to meet her husband Billy), Liz discovers an uncomfortable truth about herself, and a "complicated relationship with gratitude."

Although he began practicing in 1981, it wasn't until the year 2000 while shadowing a dual diagnosis practitioner, that Dr. Fiori found is calling. Thus ignited a life long mission to study and understand substance use disorders and how they interact with other disorders.
One of his greatest takeaways from this line of work: substance use disorder is NOT a "moral failing" and that this stigma and misunderstanding prevents folks from getting care.
We discuss this and more in the episode:
- Working as a physician is a balancing act; one must stay open and receptive towards patients in their most vulnerable moments, but be careful to not burn out.
- Take care of yourself so that you can show up for others
- We all carry prejudices and biases. It's imperative to examine our own thoughts and biases and understand how they may interfere with providing good care
- A person experiencing substance use disorder is just as worthy of care as someone seeking treatment for a physical ailment
- Acknowledging how we can provide better care to folks in treatment centers, particularly for non-male patients. We can always strive to make the space safer for all folks.
- When first contemplating getting sober, it may be an enormously daunting thought. Instead of focusing on total abstinence, make it a goal to stay in treatment and be honest, two reasonable feats that you can achieve.
- Dr. Fiori's advice: "This isn't your fault, but it is your responsibility... find someone you can trust to walk with you through this"
Check out Talkiatry, a platform that Dr. Fiori provides care on. Talkiatry's goal is to provide a significant swath of humans accessible and quick care, while avoiding an exorbitant out of pocket co-pay.

Whether with therapists or friends, sometimes the focus in relationships is more on what you need rather than what you want, and it’s important to remain open and receptive so change can occur. Although it's hard to keep the faith that whatever is on the other side of the struggle is worth it, we hope Liz and Bryce can encourage you today to know it is always worth it.
What we cover in this episode:
● Liz and Bryce’s experiences with therapists, including what has helped them to things they could do without
● Having a reference point for what productive therapy looks like
● Staying open to change and being willing to try things
● Safe friendships and community
● Keeping humble in the journey
● Choosing who to share the big things with
● Holding space for friends to vent

When Matt and Debbie first opened their gym, CrossFit Crave, they had no way of knowing the transformative effect it would have on their community. But they decided if they could just change one life, the community would be a better place. Fueled by that goal, Debbie’s background in trauma-informed education, and Matt’s healing experience in CrossFit, they started a juvenile fitness program. In the program, they connect young folks to a supportive community aimed at bridging mental health, wellness, and CrossFit programming. Six years later, the program has the lowest recidivism rate in the state of Ohio.
To share the knowledge that led to the program's success, Matt and Debbie launched CrossFit’s Affiliate Community Empowerment Program (ACEP)*. ACEP's goal is "to arm affiliates with the tools and education they need to create and host programs that serve people who have experienced trauma by improving their health and fitness, and helping them find a community."
In the episode, we discuss CrossFit, Trauma, ACEP* and more:

Over 10 years later, Kaley says that starting that journey into sobriety was stepping into the fullest form of her human existence. It has been tough work, even grueling at times, but she’s reclaimed the life she thought she wasn’t worthy of at 19, and she’s so grateful she listened to her loved ones and took the leap of faith. We discuss Kaley’s story and more:

Through treatment, community, and their eventual deep friendship, Jeremy found recovery, became a counselor himself (at the same rehab!), and a partnership was formed. Today, the two are founders and CEO’s of Rehab Road Trips, a full-service media production company dedicated exclusively to the behavioral health space. Through video, they capture authentic peeks into the treatment space; demystifying the services that have the potential to reduce suffering and save lives.
In this episode we discuss what that work looks like, why it is meaningful to Jeremy & Dallas in their own lives and recovery, and how they help others to find treatment even when it seems impossible.
If you have ever wondered about addiction treatment: what it’s like, whether it’s for you, how in the world it could work for you or your loved ones with the infinite number of barriers we encounter… this is an episode to listen to and share.

After years of addiction to crystal meth and ultimately incarceration, Erik wasn’t sure he had anything to give. Seeing the pain in his family’s eyes was a catalyst to working toward a different way of living, diving into fitness, and finding recovery. Upon release from prison, Erik quickly learned that he had plenty to give, and began reaching out to help others.
As generous as he is humble, Erik gives us a new understanding of what it means to volunteer, and how much giving back impacts both the giver and recipient. Like so many guests we’ve had on the show, Erik is amazed every day at the life he built in recovery, and the community that surrounds him.

Ryan shares the story of Mobilize Recovery's beginnings, unexpected ways the organization has evolved, and why advocating for policy change and out of the box thinking is critical to solving the addiction crisis.
Mobilize Recovery is an initiative of the Recovery Advocacy Project and the Voices Project. Its mission is to expand policy to support substance use disorder recovery, create connections to supportive services that are vital and lifesaving, and to engage affected individuals in meaningful community action. As Ryan describes it, Mobilize Recovery is a "home" for the big, bold ideas born from the creativity and ingenuity of the recovery community.

We hear about how an unexpected sense of belonging in the recovery community helped Faizah feel comfortable in her own skin. And we discuss the challenges faced by physicians and patients in the treatment of SUD, and the impact of meeting people exactly where they are- even if it's not on the path a doctor might have hoped for.
As we celebrate Faizah's story as a Phoenix volunteer, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank ALL volunteers, who are changing the world one outstretched hand at a time. Phoenix volunteers work tirelessly to end the stigma of addiction by sharing hope and resilience through community. Words cannot express our gratitude for who you are and all that you do.

When Kelvin looked around, he didn't see any other men of color in yoga and healing communities. Nor did he see many leaders who looked like him in recovery spaces. In this episode, with an unwavering and deep compassion for himself and others, Kelvin talks frankly about why that is. He names systems that were designed to keep people sick, addicted and incarcerated; and how he not only found freedom within himself, but now reaches out a hand to others & breaks down stigma within and about BIPOC communities.

Bryce shares his experience as a single man in recovery; discussing what dating was like before he learned to set and maintain personal boundaries, and some of the wisdom he implements now. And as someone who was married before getting sober (check out Episode 12 to meet her husband Billy), Liz discovers an uncomfortable truth about herself, and a "complicated relationship with gratitude."
We talk about experiencing heartbreak for the first time in recovery, Google's unhelpful advice to drink away our sorrows, and why waiting to jump into a relationship in early sobriety can be hard, and can be worth it. Our takeaway from start to finish is that we won't ever have all the answers. And our opinions are just that: opinions. But we do know this for sure: We are all worthy of love and respect.

Once grappling for a sense of belonging and identity, Doug now knows who he is, what he enjoys, and can say with confidence that today, he is truly happy.
We discuss professional treatment as a pathway to sobriety, the power of how we talk to ourselves, and some challenges of new recovery. When he stopped using substances, Doug was left with parts of himself that still needed healing- even after the drugs and alcohol were gone. Throughout our conversation, Doug expresses his gratitude for the entire journey, and for a community that lifts one other up through shared experiences and hard-earned wisdom.
Doug mentions his work with Guiding Light; a free, inpatient substance use treatment program for men. To learn more, visit https://guidinglightworks.org/

As a yoga instructor and community builder, Erika's willingness to be vulnerable empowers others to release shame and own their stories. She is on a mission to create safer communities by raising awareness of language that is supportive versus harmful, particularly in spaces such as fitness, where diet culture is so common.
Far from a lecture on "what not to say," this episode offers tools to support yourself and others while welcoming nothing but grace for the times we unintentionally cause harm with our words.
Ready to try a guided meditation? You can join Erika for (free!) meditation classes on the Phoenix live stream platform on Mondays at 2pm EST. She teaches yoga on Mondays at 1pm EST and Tuesdays & Thursdays at 5:30pm EST. And join her for weekly book club every Wednesday at 6pm EST!

Liz asks the hard question; "Do you really have it together as much as you appear to?" And as usual, Bryce has an uplifting and very real response. (spoiler alert... his immediate answer is "nope!") As a person with 9 years of recovery, experience as a coach and meditation teacher, and a frequent public speaker, Bryce is open about how he balances the roles of teacher and student.

This conversation is extra special, because Scott shares how fatherhood changed his recovery and his life's very purpose. He and Bryce discuss the parallels between fatherhood and recovery, and how disrupting generational patterns of trauma can change the way society approaches addiction.
Scott has said many times that society views people who have experienced addiction as the problem, while at The Phoenix, we are the solution. In this discussion he describes how his own experiences with The Phoenix have illustrated this point over and over again.
You'll hear the unexpected way that Scott recharges and relaxes, and get a glimpse into his poetic side.
This is one that you just don't want to miss. Whether you are already connected to The Phoenix or you are still wrapping your head around what a "sober, active community" even means, there is something in this episode that will inspire you to go even deeper.

In recovery, Angus' relationship with the activities he had already been passionate about did not wane, they simply changed. For him, sport was both a path toward addiction and a way to break out. And his approach to filmmaking and his lifelong dedication to creativity simply expanded when he chose to tell his story and process recovery through art.

In active substance use, a life of sobriety seemed utterly impossible to Holly. She had more scary experiences than she could count, but continued to hide the severity of her addiction from her family for years and believed that she deserved this life. Today she has a very different outlook. Her simple but powerful words of affirmation might be just the message you or someone you love needs to hear today.
Today, Holly is proud of herself, and she's proud of you for being here. So are we.

And if you are someone who worries that there is no way anyone could understand what you are going through, and recovery just isn't ever going to be possible for you... listen to the very end. This episode is named after a concept that comes from writer Glennon Doyle; that the goal of the journey isn't to avoid the fire, but to realize that we are fireproof. We hope you walk away from this conversation with a little more faith in yourself, and with a smile on your face.
We sure did.

Gavin shares what it was like to get sober in his 20s, and all the lessons he still had to learn after he put down the drink. We talk about facing the pain that substances are covering up, and how getting sober is only one part of recovery. Gavin realized that coping strategies like diving into work, or trying to "win" at yoga can be just another way to escape, and found out what it feels like to be completely honest with himself and with others.

Samantha shares her process of becoming a writer and speaker following the identity crisis that came with making a choice to walk away from drinking culture. This conversation is full of gems for anyone seeking inspiration to live their fullest life- whether you are a mom or not. As Jamen says, "Recovery is personal." Weight loss is part of Jamen's personal story, and if that is a topic that is unsafe for you, it's ok to wait for next week, or to have a trusted friend listen first. We do not discuss Eating Disorders (ED) in this episode, but recognize that ED is part of recovery for many of us. Please take care of yourself above all else.
