Season 4, Episode 18 - Sabbaticals and Renewal: Why Rest Is More Than a Vacation.

Most clergy know how to plan renewal for others β€” but struggle to plan it for themselves. Many go years, even decades, without a true sabbatical or intentional retreat. Yet research and Scripture agree: rest isn’t a reward β€” it’s part of our calling.

In this episode, we explore the biblical, theological, and practical foundations for sabbaticals and renewal. She shares why rest matters, how to plan a meaningful sabbatical, and how to build ongoing rhythms of renewal through retreats, sabbath days, and spiritual practices that restore energy and creativity.

Season 4, Episode 17 - The 2nd Half of Ministry: Wisdom, Legacy, and Letting Go.

What does faithfulness look like in the second half of ministry?

In this episode, we explore the unique questions clergy face in their 50s and 60s β€” aging bodies, shifting energy, legacy, and the call to move from achievement to wisdom. Drawing from Richard Rohr’s β€œsecond half of life” spirituality, this episode invites pastors to reflect on how ministry matures over time β€” from building to mentoring, from control to surrender.

Season 4, Episode 16 - When You Feel Stuck β€” Mid-Career Ministry Pivots and Possibilities.

What happens when the ministry you began no longer feels like the ministry you can sustain? Mid-career is often when clergy feel stuckβ€”worn down by conflict, weighed down by responsibilities, and unsure if this is really their calling for the next 20 years.

In this episode, we unpack the unique challenges of mid-career ministry, share insights from recent clergy well-being research, and offer practical ways to discern, pivot, or reimagine your call. Mid-career doesn’t have to be a dead end β€” it can be a doorway to something new.

Season 4, Episode 15 - What the Data Demands β€” Clergy Well-Being in 2025 & Beyond

How are clergy really doing in 2025? Several major surveys offer a sobering look:

  • Wespath 2025 Clergy Well-Being Survey
β€” Clergy report higher rates of obesity, hypertension, financial stress, and loneliness compared to benchmarks.
  • Duke Clergy Health Initiative – Mental Health Trends Report
β€” Symptoms of depression and burnout rose through 2021 and remain at high levels.
  • Hartford Institute Clergy Discontentment Report
β€” 44% of clergy have considered leaving their congregation; more than half have considered leaving ministry altogether.
  • Lifeway Research on Pastoral Retention
β€” While only 1% of pastors leave annually, many stay despite deep exhaustion; 22% cite burnout when they do leave.

In this episode, we unpack what these numbers mean for long-term sustainability in ministry and offer practical steps to help clergy thrive: caring for physical and emotional health, clarifying finances, nurturing relationships, and advocating for systemic change.

Season 4, Episode 14 - Imposter Syndrome in Ministry

Do you ever feel like you don’t really belong in ministryβ€”that you’re not as capable or gifted as others think you are? You’re not alone. Up to 70% of professionals experience imposter syndrome at some point, and clergy are especially vulnerable.

In this episode, we explore:

✨ What imposter syndrome is and how it shows up in ministry life.
✨ Why clergy are especially prone to self-doubt in a role filled with high expectations, public visibility, and constant comparison.
✨ The unique weight carried by marginalized clergy (women, clergy of color, and LGBTQIA clergy) who don’t fit the historic β€œnorm” of what a pastor looks like.
✨ The spiritual cost of imposter syndrome, and what scripture teaches us about leaders who felt inadequateβ€”Moses, Jeremiah, and Paul.
✨ Practical strategies to help you reframe success, celebrate wins, ground yourself spiritually, and build support networks.

You’ll also hear insights from writers and researchers like BrenΓ© Brown and Chanequa Walker-Barnes, reminding us that larger systems often shape self-doubtβ€”and that healing is possible.

At the heart of today’s conversation is this truth: God’s call is bigger than our doubts. You are not an imposter. You are called, equipped, and not alone.

You’ll hear:

  • πŸ““ How I began journaling as a youth, possibly during Confirmation, and what those early pages looked like
  • πŸ“¦ The surprising discovery of a box of journals from the 1970sβ€”and what those entries revealed about my faith journey
  • πŸ“– How journaling has shifted across the decades, reflecting different seasons, purposes, and needs
  • 🎨 Why creative approaches like stickers, collage, and art journaling can open new doorsβ€”even if you’re not an artist

Season 4, Episode 6 - Ten Ways to Make the Fall Easier.

Ministry doesn’t have to feel like you’re constantly sprinting uphill. In this episode, we explore 10 practical, compassionate strategies to help you create more ease, clarity, and energy in your life and leadership. Whether you’re a pastor, ministry leader, or spiritual caregiver, these tools can help you build rhythms that sustain your callingβ€”not drain it.

πŸ“ 10 Ways to Make The Fall Easier

  1. Establish Weekly Rhythms
Create a sustainable weekly flow with dedicated days for rest, planning, and creativity.
  2. Delegate What You Can
Empower others to lead by handing off what doesn’t require your unique role.
  3. Simplify Communication
Use templates, batch work, and calendars to streamline how and when you communicate.
  4. Create Repeatable Systems
Build systems for things you do oftenβ€”like visitor follow-up, funerals, or sermon prep.
  5. Get Things Out of Your Head
Use external tools to track tasks instead of trying to remember everything.
  6. Set Boundaries and Protect Time Off
Define and defend your work hours, Sabbath, and personal time.
  7. Meal Plan or Simplify Food
Reduce daily stress with simple food routines and basic prep systems.
  8. Schedule One Fun or Restful Thing Each Week
Joy and rest are essential for long-term sustainabilityβ€”plan them like appointments.
  9. Be Honest About What You're Making Harder
Identify patterns or habits that add unnecessary stressβ€”and shift gently.
  10. Ask Daily: β€œHow Can I Make This Easier?”
Let this be your guiding question to simplify and reduce friction in life and ministry.

Season 3, Episode 9 - Ministry and The Motivational Triad.

The Motivational Triad:
1. Seek Pleasure: The desire for positive experiences, comfort, and reward. This is rooted in the brain's reward system, where pleasurable activities trigger dopamine release.

  1. Avoid Pain: The instinct to minimize physical and emotional discomfort. This includes avoiding danger, stress, or anything perceived as unpleasant.

  2. Conserve Energy: The tendency to avoid unnecessary effort or exertion. Evolutionarily, conserving energy was important for survival when food was scarce.

Season 3, Episode 2 - Flourishing a Practical Process. How do we flourish in life in ministry when circumstances don't change? Today, we explore a simple process to help you step into flourishing, no matter what is happening in life right now.

Process:
Step 1

  • What you'd INCLUDE in your ideal day.
  • What you'd EXCLUDE in your ideal day.
  • The gap between the two. Get a sense of it.

Step 2

  • Add images and feelings - what does flourishing look and feel like?

Step 3

  • Review each list and give yourself a "+" for each item on your INCLUDE LIST that is part of your day and a"β€”" for each item on your EXCLUDE LIST that is part of your usual day.
  • (This makes things more actionable)
  • Now, put what you'd INCLUDE IN ORDER. (note: this could be an order based on what would be easiest to add OR what would give you the most bang for your buck.)
  • Put what you'd EXCLUDE IN ORDER.
  • Pick one or two items from the images and feeling list to guide you.

Now what?
1. Just grow your awareness about yourself and what flourishing means for you. We are not always able to act, but just knowing can help you sense where you’d like to move at some point.

  1. Decide one thing you’d like to include or one thing you’d like to exclude. Sure, it would be great if you could knock off the whole list, add all the include items, and delete all the exclude items, but that is probably not possible for everyone. So, pick one. You will be surprised at how much impact just one has.

  2. Throw the lists away and focus on the image or feeling of flourishing. Let it run in the background as you do life and let it give you a bit of a lift and a bit of a new perspective.

**So, what do you think? What will you live into so you might flourish just a bit more, even if nothing changes at your church?

Season 2, Episode 23 - How to Feel Better.

In today's episode, we explore why feeling better helps us live fuller and better lives and helps us do better. Here is the process to feel better:

  1. Make a list – this is a pen-on-paper thing (don’t do it in your head). List ALL of the thoughts you are thinking. Don't edit yourself.

  2. Learn that you don’t have to believe what you think. You may want to keep some thoughts, but some will be outdated, unhelpful, or just not what you want running around your brain.

  3. Put good things in your brain so you feel better. 80% of what we think about is negative, so we must work to put good things into our brains. Practice new thoughts.

  4. Put a system in place to keep you feeling better. When you start feeling better, you may want to put your energy toward doing better at home or work, but first, set up an easy system to keep building on good thoughts so you can cement your better feelings.

Season 2, Episode 16: Dealing with Anxiety - We all have it, so how can we address it?

Today, we focus on the power of self-coaching and how it can help us become more aware of our thoughts and address our anxiety.

To self-coaching write down:
1. Circumstances - Use the situation's facts devoid of drama.
2. Thoughts - What thoughts are you thinking - write them all down.
3. Feelings - What feeling goes with each thought?
4. Pick the Thought/Feeling combination you want to explore.
5. Write down what you DO and DON'T DO when you think that thought and feel that feeling.
6. Write down the results you get from your action/non-action.

Becoming aware of your thoughts gives you awareness - Is this what you want to think? What else might be equally true and a better thought to think?

In today's episode:

  1. See your doctor and ensure your lack of energy isn't related to a health issue.
  2. Do a sleep audit and see if you were getting enough and good quality sleep, then do what you need to improve that.
  3. Use morning/evening, other rituals, or checklists in order to decrease decision fatigue. The more things you can streamline, the less brain energy you need to spend on them.
  4. Get some movement in your day. Even starting with a 10-minute walk makes a difference as you build endurance and energy.
  5. Drink your water! We are often dehydrated instead of tired.
  6. Make sure you have something you look forward to in your day. And if you feel your energy is too low to add anything, spend some time enjoying the things that are part of your day a little more. Like enjoying that cup of coffee, that phone call with a friend, dinner around the table, or time to watch your favorite show.

Season 2, Episode 12: How does your nervous system affect your life? Today's episode explores how understanding the nervous system can create a fuller and richer life in ministry and life.

The four states we find ourselves in when we are dysregulated are: Fight, Flight, Freeze & Fawn.

How we help ourselves:
1. Become aware of our states (internal, external) and the story we tell.
2. Take steps to become more regulated - breathwork is a good place to start.

Other things that help with nervous system regulation include:

  • Getting enough sleep at night and rest outside of sleep.
  • Simple movement throughout the day
  • Connection with others, and ourselves ( including journaling) or with an activity we enjoy, such as a puzzle or game, or hobby.
  • Prayer, meditation
  • Being outside in nature, especially walking barefoot on the grass.
  • Listening to music
  • Connecting with water – the ocean, a bath or shower or fountain,
  • Creating a soundscape, music, fountain or fan, or audio file we find calming.
  • Get a hug, back rub or bodywork

  • Do things that help you stay regulated.

  • Practice co-regulation.

How we help others:
1. Be regulated.
2. Start meetings and gatherings outside of Sunday with practices that help people bring their best to these gatherings. Things that help include,

  • time for silence, reflection on a text, prayer time, and breathwork.
  • Singing helps with regulation too, so using a song can be very helpful.
  • Even a simple time where people hold hands in a circle and pray together can make a big difference in how people show up to a meeting.

Other things you can do to help –

  • When people are acting dysregulated, meet with them one-on-one.
  • Meet people for a walk or in a park, nature can help people relax and bring their best selves to the meeting.
  • And last, respect vacation and downtime .– Respecting others and their boundaries leads to better regulation for all.

So, what does all this make you think about today?

This week is an encore episode - our #1 episode of Season 2 (so far!). Enjoy!

The Harvard Business Review had a good article on how to deal with bad days. They shared these insights:

  1. Pinpoint the problem.

  2. Take a moment to be grateful.

  3. Take Action

  4. Change your routine

  5. Set realistic expectations

These can help, but as clergy, we need additional help, including:

  • First, Know that life is 50-50.
  • Second, In the midst of terrible times, show everyone some love and patience.
  • Third, ask yourself – who do I want to be in this terrible time?
  • Forth, wait, think, and pray before you take major action.

Wellness Practice - Lectio 365 App What Is Making This Week Good - 1 Second a Day App

Mindfulness Meditation:
From Nadia Bolz-Weber: A blessing for the new year:
β€œAs you enter this new year, as you pack away the Christmas decorations and get out your stretchy pants as you face the onslaught of false promises offered you through new disciplines and elimination diets as you grasp for control of yourself and your life and this chaotic world. May you remember that there is no resolution that, if kept, will make you more worthy of love. There is no resolution that, if kept, will make life less uncertain and allow you to control a pandemic and your children and the way other people act. So this year, May you just skip the part where you resolve to be better do better and look better this time. May you give yourself the gift of really, really low expectations. May you expect so little of yourself that you can be super proud of the smallest of accomplishments. May you expect so little of the people in your life that you actually notice and cherish every small lovely thing about them. May you expect so little of the supply chain and the service industry that you notice more of what you do get and less of what you don't and then just tip really well anyhow. May you expect to get so little out of 2023 (now 2023) that you can celebrate every single thing it offers you, however small because you deserve joy and not disappointment. So, I wish you a Happy as possible New Year.”

In Season 2, Episode 10, we look at the important topic: How does God provide? Today we explore this important topic for our lives as people of faith.

Do you believe that God provides?

Β· Physical things, yes.

Β· But also deeper things of life.

Luke 9:10-17 – The Feeding of the 5000+

Β· What kind of miracle is this?

Β· However you understand it, know that it is God’s nature to provide for us

Β· Genesis 22, Psalm 121, Philippians 4

We may be confused by what it means that β€œGod provides.”

Β· And because of that confusion, we may miss out on God’s provision.

We start with: God is in the human development business

Β· No life is to be problem-free – God wants more for us than an easy life

Β· To be fully human is to live a BETTER than happy life.

Β· God’s provision isn’t about taking life’s difficulties away.

So…what does God’s provision look like?

  1. God’s provision does for us what we cannot do for ourselves.

  2. God’s provision calls us past where we are.

  3. God’s provision may not look like what we are expecting.

How do we access God’s provision?

1. When you arise each day, have the expectation that God will provide for you.

  1. This is key. If you look for God’s provision, you will begin to see it.

Say:

Β· β€œGod, show me how you are providing for me.”

Β· And then ask for specific provision, say: β€œShow me your provision in my relationship with X or with this situation in my life.”

Β· Say, β€œShow me what you are doing and guide my steps.”

Β· Say: β€œHelp me act on and live into your provision”

If you do:

  1. You will worry less (see Luke 12)

  2. You will live more.

**Will you be on the lookout (with expectation) for God’s provision in your life?

In Season 2, Episode 6, we look at what is often missing as we struggle to accomplish what matters to us. The problem isn't your lack of focus - it is actually something else.

Outline: How do we grow our commitment to accomplishing what matters to us?
1. What is the one thing you'd like to grow your commitment to?
2. What is my "why." Why do I want to achieve this?
3. Recognize that while you want to go toward your goal, there is something competing against it. Explore not only your goal (Option A) and your why but also your Option B and why.
4. Address the struggle between Option A and Option B with these questions:
Who will I be if I continue to choose Option B? And, is that OK with me?
What would I have to experience in order to choose Option A?
*How would I support myself in moving toward Option A?

Understanding Option B and its very real pull in our lives gives us the freedom to move forward.

In Episode 47, we talk about self-sabotage. Most of us know all about it, but it turns out we misunderstand its meaning and importance. Ready to learn something new and helpful about self-sabotage? Today's episode is for you!

Key Points:
Β· We self-sabotage because we have unmet needs.

Β· We self-sabotage because we are wired for comfort, not happiness or change.

Β· We self-sabotage because we are human, not because we are weak or have character flaws.

Β· Self-sabotage can show us our needs. And these needs are often unmet and in need of our attention.

Β· And self-sabotage is part of the process as we grow, so it shouldn’t alarm us or cause us to give up our goals.

Oftentimes, the world is set up, so we want what we don't yet have. But what is the secret to happiness, growth, and peace, is wanting what we already have?

As clergy, how do we become more resilient? Today we focus on a behavior that grows our resilience skill set: Having Our Own Back.

Having our own back is about being on our own side and seeing our self-worth even when we make mistakes and fall short.

In today's episode, we look at four behaviors that grow this skill:
1. Knowing this is work you need to do for yourself
2. Deciding after you make a choice to embrace it 100%.
3. Letting others know what you need and want.
4. Stopping negative self-talk.

We also have a Wellness Practice of the Week, What Is Making This Week Good, and a Mindfulness Meditation.

In this week's episode, we look at how we can develop new skills in this new year - ones that will help us weather difficult seasons in ministry and life.

  • Forth, wait, think and pray before you take major action.

In today's episode, we look at how clergy can set and live into their goals - even when things are crazy, and life is a challenge. We also have a Wellness Practice of the Week, What Is Making This Week Good, and a Mindfulness Meditation.

We focus on these points:

We set goals that enable us to:
1. Never feel bad when we don't achieve them.
2. Feel free to adjust goals (or toss them)
3. Set them for a quarter (instead of a year) if that is helpful.

W don't set goals that are about purchasing our "worthiness." We are already worthy, and nothing can change that.

We don't set goals as "self-improvement."

How to move your goals forward:
1. Take a look at your goals - print them out or write them down. Have them in front of you as we work.
2. Start by calendaring all your vacation for 2023.
3. Let's schedule your next week together - 1. Calendar your goals, and 2. Do what is on your calendar.

Look to hit 80% of your goals by:

  • .Plan your goal activities for when you are MOST likely to do them
  • Use "downtime," like before a meeting or before bed.
  • Experiment - become a student of you.

4. Grow Confidence in your ability to move your life forward by planning and following your plan.

Do you set goals? Yes? No? Take a journey with me into a new way of thinking about goals for your life and ministry.

We will also focus on a wellness practice of the week, what is making this week good, and a mindfulness meditation.

Why this is a different way to look at goals:
First, I never feel bad when I don’t achieve my goals.
Second, I adjust my goals (even throwing them out if needs be).
Third, I don’t set them for the whole year but as quarterly goals.

This week we look at success. What is success to you? How does that impact your ministry and life?

In addition, we look at a Wellness Practice of the Week, What is Making this Week Good, a Mindfulness Meditation.

From this Week's Episode:

Let’s think about what success is in our own lives.

  • Where do you want to be 2,3, or 5 years from now – what would faithfulness or success look like for you?

  • As you think about success – think deeply – what do you want?

  • Do you even know what you want in life and ministry?

  • Do some exploration in your own heart and listen to your deepest yearnings.
  • Your dreams and desires are God given – so listen to them.

  • How do you define success/faithfulness in your current ministry context?

  • Get outside of numbers if that isn’t helpful.

  • Where do you want the church to be 2,3,5 years from now?

  • Find the courage you need to prioritize what success looks like for you.

  • It is hard to block out what the world thinks success looks like but find the courage to forge your success. And prioritize that.

**Here is a tool to help. In coaching, we sometimes use this idea of your future self to help us live into what can be.

12 Questions:**1. What are my current negative thoughts?

  1. What am I worried about?

  2. What isn’t work in my life?

  3. Where aren’t I showing up fully?

  4. Where am I struggling the most.

  5. What have been the main dreams in my life?

  6. What is my ultimate purpose

  7. If I knew I couldn’t fail, what would I do?

  8. When I visualize your future, what do you see?

  9. Based on what I see in my future– what decisions and commitments do I need to live into now?

  10. As you think about yourself in the future = how am I different than I am today?

  11. What does the person I am in the future want to say to me right now?

Today's episode is all about relationships and how our thoughts create them. Today we also cover a Wellness Practice for the Week, What is Making this Week Good and a Mindfulness Meditation.

Three Things from This Episode:

  1. Your relationships with others are your thoughts about them, and that opens up some new possibilities.

**2. Our thoughts cause our feelings about others, and our feelings about people and their behavior can be all over the place.

  1. All this is good news because it gives you freedom in your relationships.**

Do you ever get stuck in a discouragement rut? Join the club! In today's episode, we look at the reality of being discouraged and how we can find our way.

We move forward when we:
1. Normalize it.
2. Notice the Mind's Watcher

Martha Beck quote: β€œStepping back from the Dictator and the Wild Child and becoming the Watcher is like thinking you’ve been stuck on a railroad track, able to move only backward and forward, and discovering that you had the capacity to fly all along.”

3. Don't resist your thoughts. Story of Having Mara With Tea. 4. Doubt your thoughts.
5. Offer yourself LOVE.

Mindfulness Poem
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
Some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!...

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

In today's episode, we talk about contentment - what it is, what it isn't, and why it benefits our wellness.

We will also look at a wellness practice for the week, what is making this week good, and a mindfulness meditation (based on 1 Timothy 6).

Good Therapy defines contentment as
Being happy with what you have,
Who you are,
And where you are.
It is respecting the reality of the present.

How do we grow contentment - here are ten ideas.
1. Live in the present day.
2. Be a student of what gives you life.
3. Forgive and let go.
4. Be curious about what God is doing.
5. Give up complaining for a season.
6. Take 30-minutes to clean your office.
7. Live in a grey, not just black and white, world.
8. Embrace that no one knows and that is OK.
9. Make a list of the rest of this year's big rocks and let that be enough.
10. Listen to your heart.

This week's episode will look at some helpful research about how the church is doing post-COVID. Knowing more about the larger picture enables us to put our experiences in a bigger context and take things less personally (I hope).

Data:

  1. Pew Research Center reports that 63% of Americans describe themselves as Christians (down from 75% 10 years ago).

  2. Post Covid Who Didn’t Return:

a. The middle holds – churches with 40-60 YO seeing β€œback to church” stronger than younger (under 30) and older (over 65).

b. Decline in attendance most pronounced among married adults without kids.

c. Decline in attendance not linked by conservative/liberal divide.

d. 1 in 3 practicing Christians has stopped attending church during COVID (Barna)

e. Christians who say they attend church monthly has dropped seven percentage points: 64% to 57%. (Lifeway Research)

f. Pew Research reports that 2 in 3 of regular attendees returned.

Why people didn’t return (Influence Magazine)

  1. COVID Hesitancy.

  2. Inertia

  3. Weak Attachments

  4. Church switching

  5. No added value.

  6. Jesus’ calling

Important to know:

  1. Americans report COVID strengthened their faith (not weakened it).

  2. Concern that the lack of in-person interaction could weaken social bonds which affect public mental health (depression, suicide, drugs, and alcohol).

  3. A Barna survey reports those who stopped attending church are β€œmore likely to feel insecure and anxious, compared with practicing Christians who didn’t stop attending services in person.”

  4. β€œWhere your treasure is, there will your heart be.”

Interesting and watching…..

  1. Aggregate data from Barna from 2019-22 shows growing weekly attendance from Millennials (21% to 39%), Gen X (24% to 32%), and a decrease in Boomers (32% to 25%). Includes ONLINE and in-person worship.

  2. β€œIn 2020 and 2021, our data represents churchgoers either settling into or opting out of online attendance. Despite all of the disruptions of 2020, the opportunity of online worship actually helped to boost attendance across all generations. However, in 2021, the novelty seemed to have worn off and people’s church attendance declined significantly. Now, in 2022, younger generations especially are re-engaging in church, a shift that might potentially mark a new chapter in church attendance.”

  3. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of church attendance happened exclusively in person. Today, that’s only true for about half of churched adults.

Re-Gathering (From Church Fuel)

  1. Make church about the kids

  2. Focus on Community, not content

  3. Develop a communications plan

  4. We need to normalize higher levels of engagement and involvement

In today's episode, we talk about something we are all familiar with: complaints. Every clergy hears complaints but why? And, how common is complaining (very very common - the average person complains 15-30 times A DAY!). Plus, we answer a couple of questions from episode #19 on Minimum Baselines.

Listen as we learn some of the whys, worst and best practices.

Why We Complain:
1. Emotional regulation.
2. Mood.
3. Personality.
4. Social factors

Worst Practices:
1. Take the complaint personally.
2. Read and ruminate about anonymous complaints.
3. Put the complainer in charge.

Best Practices:
1. Don't take it personally but take it (somewhat) seriously.
2. Ask: What is helpful here?
3. Don't magnify the importance of the complaint.
4. Get regular encouragement.

We will also look at

  • A Wellness practice of the week
  • What is making this week good
  • Mindfulness Meditation

2. What makes you think?
3. What makes you grow?

The minimum baseline is the least amount of what you are able to do, on a regular basis to achieve what you want in your life.

Why do the minimum?

  1. First, it builds trust in yourself
  2. Gives you real tools to honor your commitment to yourself.
  3. You create success in what matters to you.

OK so let’s look at how to start

  • First, recognize you might want to have a couple of different minimum baselines.

Today we finish our 2-part series on Leadership. Today we will focus on Jesus' leadership and how it calls us to lead others.

Each of us will emphasize different aspects of Jesus' leadership. But one way it has been spoken of is as Servant leadership. Jesus' leadership was focused on love, compassion, and self-awareness. He invites us to lead in this new way.

Over the 2-part series we looked at 4 questions:

  1. How do I lead like Jesus? (Episode 1.17)
  2. Who do I want to be in this new season? (Episode 1.17)
**3. How do I want to treat others? (Today, Episode 1.18)
  3. How do I want to move my life and the things I care about forward? (Today, Episode 1.18)**

(3) As we lead others and consider how we want to treat them consider:
1. Of first importance: serve out of a commitment to the mission.
2. Ask, do this church and its ministry inspire generosity in me?
3. Out of wanting to lead others remember to develop a spirit that is open to listen and learn.
4. Leaders get that it isn't about them it is all about God.

(4) As we consider how to move important things forward consider:
1. Leaders may find they need an "attitude adjustment"
2. Leaders are called to be involved in a consistent way.
3. Not show what needs your leadership? Follow the Holy Spirit's leadership.

β€œI am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still, I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
β€” Edward Everett Hale

Clergy leaders matter. So take care of yourself. Get the support you need to lead well. invest in yourself (books, conferences, naps...).

Today will we also look at:

Today we begin a 2-part series on Leadership. We will look at Jesus as a leader, how we lead ourselves and how we lead as pastors. Today, we look at Jesus as a leader and how we lead ourselves.

Jesus led by servant leadership - a kind of leadership focused on love, compassion, and self-awareness. He cared for others in community, inviting them to build God's kingdom together.
How does his leadership inform our leadership?

Self-leadership invites us to build on the foundation of Jesus and ask how we lead ourselves and become the leaders God invites us to be?

Over the 2-part series we will look at 4 questions:

  1. How do I lead like Jesus?
  2. Who do I want to be in this new season?

It is fall and fall is a busy time for clergy. Is it busier this year? Maybe...because it feels like the first "normal" fall since 2019. So will you be too busy? Instead of overfunctioning, how might we do things differently this year?

In today's episode, we look at how leadership development builds a foundation that moves clergy out of overfunctioning and into growth, both personally and professionally. Think you need to do it all? Think again.

Leadership development (the easy type):
1. Knowing your current leaders and growing their leadership.
2. Getting your current leaders' support and help in identifying and mentoring new leaders.

I do – you help
You do -I help

In 2006, a pastor introduced the idea of a 21-day fast from complaining. Over 6.2 million people have taken the challenge. Those who have taken the challenge have found the joys and challenges of learning to live a complaint-free life.

In today's episode, we look at how easy it is to fall into complaining and what we can do to live a healthier and happier life. We look at the why of complaining and how complaining is often about seeking validation and attention - two things we all need. But complaining raises our cortisol and blood pressure and the more we do it the more our brain looks for things to complain about.

Today will we also look at: A wellness practice of the week, What is making this week good, and a Mindfulness Meditation.Today's Mindfulness Meditation comes from Matthew 5: 14 β€œYou are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Welcome to the Clergy Wellness Podcast, this is season 1, episode 10, Self Confidence for Ministry and Life

Today will we also look at: A wellness practice of the week, What is making this week good, and a Mindfulness Meditation.

Self-confidence is being secure in who you are. You know you can trust yourself. That you can feel all your feelings and know it's OK. In other words, self-confidence is the overall opinion you hold of yourself.

How do we grow in self-confidence? A couple of ideas I am working with -
1. Be honest with yourself about your self-confidence. Don’t see it as a, β€œit is what it is” thing in your life. Instead, see where you are and know you deserve better.
2. Notice when you sell yourself short. Growing your awareness will help you grow.
3. Make the choice to believe in yourself and begin doing this important work.

Self-Confidence matters because growing our self-confidence helps us have less fear and anxiety, grows our motivation and resilience, and helps us grow our trust in ourselves.

Quotes:
β€œHigh self-esteem seems to operate like a bank of positive emotions, which furnish a general sense of well-being and can be useful when you need an extra dose of confidence to cope with misfortune, ward off depression, or bounce back from failure.” –Roy Baumeister and John Tierney, Willpower

β€œBeing for yourself, not against others but on your own side, is the foundation of all practices of health, well-being, and effectiveness.” --Rick Hanson, Hardwiring HappinessWellness Practice -What have you done that you are proud of- preached good sermons, grown a vegetable garden, reached out to an old friend, dealt with a difficult staff member? If you can, write them down but at the very least bring a couple – 5 would be great – to mind.

Savor your success. I say this cause too often we rush to the next thing. Thinking what we have done doesn’t matter or is no big deal. But for the sake of your wellness, put that aside and think of what you have done this year that you can celebrate. For thinking on these things will build our self-confidence and grow our wellness.

Mindfulness Text: β€œCome to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30

In this week's episode, we look at what it means to live in the full range of feelings and find health and wellness in doing so.

Ministry, like life, is a lot about trying new things. The problem is most new things don't succeed right out the gate and that can cause discouragement and anxiety. So why try new things? Especially in ministry?

In this week's episode, we look at why failure is part of ministry and nothing to be worried about. Instead, trying and (at times) failing is how we learn and grow and follow Jesus.

This week you'll learn about some basics as you try new things and also, how to address failure when it happens.

You need better boundaries in life and ministry. How do I know? Because we ALL do!

What do boundaries do for us? First, boundaries remind us what we are responsible for and what is not our responsibilities. Second, boundaries keep people and relationships healthy by acknowledging that ignoring disrespectful words and actions breeds unhealthy environments. Third, boundaries protect people from over-functioning, that is, seeing themselves and what they provide as indispensable.

In this week's episode, we look at the importance of boundaries in leading healthy and happy lives and how boundaries create communities of wellness.
