Over time I noticed some restaurants don’t cater to people that are vegan, or have other diet restrictions. In fact, there have been a lot of times I’d go out with friends to eat, but there was nothing there for me so I’d just watch, and after a while I didn’t expect to eat when going to restaurants, so instead, I’d only go to fellowship with friends. Although sometimes when I got really hungry I would find out what they had for vegans, and as you can imagine the servers weren’t always friendly, and the restaurants didn’t always have something. However there were some places where they were friendly, and had vegan friendly options, and when they did it felt really special to me, and that’s a feeling I want to share with the world.

Jordynn and Tyson are young entrepreneurs in the Asheville community who believe that business should give back. Darë was brought into existence by chef, Gwendolyn Dare Hageman, who spent most of her life as an omnivore inspired by her chef Dad. The two had a snack ritual involving a block of cheese, a pack of crackers, and a knife. When Gwendolyn decided to pursue an animal-free lifestyle, the thought of losing her favorite snack sent her searching high and low for a sufficient substitute. Time and again, she came up empty, thus beginning her journey in creating the taste she craved.
Not one to back down from a challenge, Gwendolyn grew inspired by the limitations imposed by a meat- and dairy-free lifestyle. She turned to the ancient tradition of cheesemaking and explored fermentation to coax flavor and texture from her plant-based creations. She cultivated a culture that, when married with cashews, exploded with flavor. What emerged was a passion for the food she was making, a hunger to make people happy, and the innovation to satisfy multiple palates. From there, the rest is history.
Born and raised in Dare County, North Carolina, the company name, (pronounced “Dairy”, by the way), is a play on Gwendolyn’s middle name and a cheeky nod to the bold approach in which Darë Vegan Cheese was made. Today, her company focuses on small-batch, handmade goodness. With a team of dedicated and passionate individuals, Darë chooses people over machinery and passion over everything to make a product infused with love and intention.
In this journey, Darë has found joy and purpose in creating a satisfying dairy-free cheese that leaves nothing to be desired. Well, maybe one thing, and that’s more Darë Vegan Cheese!
Jamie, in partnership with his wife Amy, built Hickory Nut Gap into a well established regional brand and created a destination farm that welcomes visitors to learn about agriculture. The farm currently raises organic cattle, pasture raised hogs and poultry, as well as a variety of fruits and vegetables. In addition to the farming production, the Agers built and oversee an on farm store and butcher shop.
Jamie and his wife Amy have three sons, Cyrus, Nolin, and Levi and live in at Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, North Carolina. In his spare time he enjoys working on the farm, swimming in the farm pond, learning, and spending time with his family.

**Sara is the Founder of the international nonprofit Africa Healing Exchange (AHE) and the Founding CEO of 3 Mountains, a social enterprise building an innovative model for driving institutional and social change. 3 Mountains owns two CPG brands, Sarilla Sparkling and Tîma Tea, and partners with women Genocide Survivors in Rwanda. Together they are building Ubuzima Healing Garden farm, where they grow healing and regenerative botanicals that can be used in teas and other products. Sara is a passionate global activist and social entrepreneur and is building these organizations with the intention of making a great positive impact on all people involved. She has been working with the people of Rwanda for over decade, creating a vehicle that would support total health for marginalized communities, offering resources for women to overcome trauma and opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty.
As a survivor herself, she brings an authentic and inspired message to everyone she meets, and in her recent Ted Talk, Sara emphasizes how community is the number one resource we have to overcome absolutely anything.**
Sara has been leading curated tours to East Africa since 2012, and is developing a farm in Rwanda in partnership with a group of 55 women who go by “Umutuzo” which means Resilience. Together they are building an integrated supply chain, growing healing botanicals that can be used in teas, native medicinals, and for export to generate sustainable income and employment.
Sara studied psychology as a university student and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management and French from Simmons College in Boston. Feeling unfulfilled by the corporate finance track, she went on to study responsible business and nonprofit development, with a concentration in Leadership and Change, earning a Masters degree in Organizational Management from the School of International Training (SIT), where the Peace Corps was founded. She completed the Mama Hope Global Executive Fellowship, and holds an international business certification from Grande Ecole du Commerce in Grenoble, France.

Sherree Lucas, the owner and director of Go Local Asheville since July 2021, moved to Asheville in 2019. Quickly observing the importance of the local independent community to the culture of Asheville, she started volunteering as coaches and mentors to entrepreneurs and small business owners. In 2019 she joined the Steering Committee of Go Local Asheville and was able to see the importance and impact the 12 year old organization had to the local business community.
Matt Raker is an economic developer focused on place-based and entrepreneurial strategies. He serves as Executive Director at Mountain BizWorks where he helps expand the opportunity of local business ownership across Western North Carolina by increasing access to capital and high-quality peer learning programs. Over the last 5 years, Matt and the BizWorks team have increased their lending capacity more than five-fold, have helped 473 new companies start, over 750 expand, and have active financing projects in 26 Western North Carolina counties. Prior to Mountain BizWorks, Matt directed entrepreneurial development at a state-sponsored economic development agency where he led projects generating over $150m in regional investment and 400 jobs. He’s also contracted the entrepreneur-bug himself, co-founding 3 area businesses. Matt holds degrees in Economics and Natural Resources Management from University of North Carolina Asheville. He, his wife, and their two kids live in Asheville.

Clark is an artist at heart and his vision has helped grow the LoLo Gifts program from a simple idea to a scaling business in just over 2 years. Clark also is a certified Deep-water-tech diver as well as a private pilot and knows how to stay cool under pressure. Clark is a native of Wilson, NC, but it could be argued his true home is in the woods or on the banks of a river with a fly rod. He also spent 100 days in silence on a fundraising campaign in honor of his late mother to "Silence Cancer".
Bruce Waller is a hi-energy servant leader with a heart for economic growth and community development . He served in the military jumping out of airplanes, served Nonprofits building community school connections across WNC and is currently one of co-owners of GRIND- Asheville’s first black-owned coffee shop and Director of Black Wall Street AVL to start grow and expand black businesses across Buncombe County.
Matt is a long time broadcaster, writer and serial entrepreneur based out of Asheville, NC. His current businesses include two radio stations (Biz Radio Asheville & Buzz Radio Asheville), an Outdoors Busniness (Serenity Canoe Guide Service) and an Outdoors-themed Travel Show (Matt & Michele Outdoors) with his Partner Michele Scheve (who also co-owns Buzz). He has been a columnist for Angler Magazine for a number of years. Matt has also served in leadership positions in various Non-Profit Organizations such as the Executive Board of the Red Cross of WNC, 3 Terms as President of ArtSpace Charter School and more. Matt moved to Asheville in 1996, after serving 8 years in the US Air Force, has 3 children and welcomed his first Grandchild in November of 2021. When asked about having so many projects, he often responds, "It's all one Garden. Lots of plants with their own needs and yeilds - but ultimatelty all companioned in one box that I tend to on a daily basis. That garden feeds not only me, but my community around me."
