U.S. stocks booked back-to-back losses on Thursday, with the S&P 500 index ending at the lowest level since May, while the Nasdaq Composite slid further into correction territory following another batch of disappointing megacap company earnings. A blockbuster report on summertime economic growth and retreating Treasury yields failed to bolster market sentiment.

A preliminary reading on third-quarter U.S. GDP came in hotter than expected on Thursday morning, with data from the Commerce Department showing the economy grew at an annualized pace of 4.9%, surpassing the 4.7% pace that Wall Street had expected. Consumer spending, the main engine of U.S. growth, rose at a 4% clip from July to September.

The European Central Bank on Thursday paused on interest-rate hikes for the first time since summer 2022, while the Bank of Canada Wednesday kept benchmark rates unchanged for a second straight meeting, saying steeper borrowing costs are dampening consumption and bringing supply and demand closer to balance.

China's industrial profits grew at a slower rate in September, but showed signs of improvement over the first nine months of the year as Beijing pushes to shore up the economic recovery.

Asian equities gave up early gains despite cautious optimism that solid post-market US tech earnings are set to spur a rebound on Wall Street. Amazon.com Inc. and Intel Corp. both gained in after-trading hours.

Nifty fell again for the sixth consecutive session on October 26 even as a series of poor corporate results in the US cast a shadow on the global risk appetite already impacted by the conflict in the Middle east. At close, Nifty was down 1.39% or 264.9 points at 18857.3. Nifty continues to fall relentlessly. On Thursday it fell with a downgap and is now close to its 200 DEMA of 18830. The upgap support at 18829 is also close by. It could now bottom out for the time being over the next 1-2 days and 18691-18829 could be a support while 18972 could be the initial resistance.

In the week gone by, the Indian rupee surged and purged but closed with no change. It has outperformed Asian currencies amid dollar inflows. The RBI surprised the market with a 10% ICRR to control inflation and remove surplus liquidity and kept the other rate unchanged with a “withdrawal of accommodative” stance. The domestic equity market remained under pressure, in line with its Asian peers. Foreign institutions remained net buyers of Indian equities and debt by investing more than $800mn in the past week.

● Last week, spot USDINR closed at 82.84, the strongest close since February 27. The set-up favours the bulls club amid broad-based strength in the greenback and risk-averse sentiments across the globe. In a holiday truncated week, the pair is expected to find support at 82.50 and resistance at 83.30.

● After whipsawing amid mixed US economic data, the dollar index finally ended the week with gains of 0.81% to 102.84, up for a fourth straight week for the first time since February. The current monetary policy mix in developed nations and divergent economic momentum are acting as catalysts for a stronger US dollar.

● Data last week encouraged the case for a prolonged pause in the Fed’s hiking cycle. But for the Indian traders, the focus will shift to India’s CPI, which might leap above RBI’s tolerance level amid surging vegetable and food article prices.

The Dow finished Friday with a modest gain for the session and the week, while the S&P 500 index and Nasdaq Composite posted a second straight weekly loss.

U.S. stock indexes closed mostly lower on Friday, losing steam intraday, a trend that’s taken hold in mid-August as technology shares slump, longer-dated Treasury yields rise, and investors consider if corporate earnings can hold up through the rest of this year.

Rising Treasury yields also added to the pressure on stocks. The 10-year note yield was up 8.5 basis points at 4.166% on Friday.

The U.S. producer-price index rose 0.3% in July.

A survey showed U.S. consumer sentiment climbing to the highest level in nearly two years in July with calming inflation and a strong labor market boosting consumers.

India's industrial output grew by 3.7 percent in June, a three-month low. It is also below the consensus estimate of 5 percent.

Asian shares struggled on Monday ahead of China data (retail sales and industrial output) that is likely to amplify the case for serious stimulus.

Nifty fell for the second consecutive session on Aug 11, pulled down by weak global cues. At close, Nifty was down 0.59% or 114.9 points at 19,428.3. 19,300 could be the next support for Nifty while 19,645 could now prove to be a resistance.
