The Other Side of The Mann: Recent Episodes

Leslie Cunningham

The Other Side of The Mann is a podcast about emotional intelligence, leadership, and interpersonal connection.

At its core, leadership is about connecting with people. One of the most important and powerful ways to truly and deeply connect with others is by first connecting with yourself, by looking inside and exploring your emotions, thoughts, and feelings, your strengths and weaknesses in other words, to become more self-aware. And in becoming self-aware, you open yourself to becoming more aware of other people and of their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It’s this sort of deep awareness and connection that enables true and powerful leadership.

Emily Presley is a legend in my life. She has influenced me for over 44 years! She came to me, I think, was it about a year ago, maybe a year and a half ago and asked if I have ever heard of this thing called Marco Polo?  I had not, Emily explained that is was a really cool way to record things, and explained that this is a way we could hold ourselves accountable.   This I think really started my deeper journey into the search for who I am, self-awareness, all the things that I want to be do and have. Emily was prodding me to go deeper.   If you have enjoyed this episode and it inspired you in some way, we’d love to hear about and know your biggest takeaway.  Email me at lcunningham@manngroup.net  Or follow me on LinkedIn and tell me what you want to hear next! This is the last episode in the series explaining why we use the assessment and how it is broken out.

Understanding yourself is the basic foundation for increased communication.  We all have certain inherent behavioral tendencies that make us unique, and to be aware of these provides us with the knowledge to modify our behavior.

Once you have understanding of yourself, then you can begin to recognize behavioral differences in others.  This allows you to create more win/win situations while you lead your teams, interact with co-workers, and the customers you serve.

Before you can appeal to a person's basic needs you must know their needs.  By knowing their basic needs you can intentionally do something that will appeal to their basic needs giving you greater endorsement.

Who you hire is the most important decision you make in your business. Yes, really. These are the people who represent your company and interact with your employees, and they matter—a lot. Which means how you interview them matters a lot, too. This week I get to talk with Cassandra from TTI the company behind the assessment. We dive into how only 25 % of your staff are motivated to be at work. How do we tap into the rest of the 75%? They might not be engaged because they are not operating from a place they are passionate about.   Happy listening! This week, we are going to be diving into the six driving forces. But I wanted to remind us a little bit of what the world driving forces are and why it matters. Driving forces are the personal drivers or the WHY of what we do, and when we take this assessment, it really helps us eliminate and amplify what our motivating factors are. Motivators can be referred to as the aspects of life that you are passionate about, things that you perceive as important, or the thoughts that provide you with the purpose and direction in life. Some people live their entire lives and are never asked to identify what truly drives them. You could work with a person for years and not be able to identify their true motivators. Why? Because our motivators are tucked away in a part of our brain, we have difficulty accessing. So, I would like to start to access this area of our brain and while you might not have taken the assessment, we can start to go through and identify some of your likes and dislikes. We have talked about behaviors and everybody is very aware of how to observe behaviors. We're going to jump into something a little bit more difficult today, and that is our motivators. If behaviors are the doorway to understanding, motivators are the arena of communication.

As a leader we get into business with a great vision. We become the conductor of the business yet we can't possibly play all of the instruments. We need people to help us do all of the work.   Teamwork is only successful when the team understands the music they are playing, agrees with the approach to learning and understands their personal skills to get the job done.   You are the conductor of all the skills.   In this seven part series, Leslie will be dissecting the assessment The Mann Group uses to help us become more familiar with HOW we like to behave and our WHY...what gets you up in the morning.   Which is VERY different from what gets your staff up in the morning. So for that reason, this is why in the context of the disc assessment, the disc assessment does an objective job of evaluating and critiquing you. It's a algorithm and a computer program. So it's not personal. It's no one attempting to, to take advantage of you. It's a science of looking back at you and giving you." Dan Mann

At its core, leadership is about connecting with people. One of the most important and powerful ways to truly and deeply connect with others is by first connecting with yourself by looking inside and exploring your emotions, thoughts, and feelings, your strengths and weaknesses.   In other words, to become more self-aware. And in becoming self-aware, you open yourself to becoming more aware of other people and of their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It’s this sort of deep awareness and connection that enables true and powerful leadership.
