HOW TO SET OUR BODY UP FOR SUCCESS

The knees are very important in all mobility but also in correlation with our gut/low back and our neck.

These three areas work together, and if one is injured or struggling in some manner, one of the other 2 can also show signs of stress.

These three areas are called "the Earth triad" and hold grounding in the body.

Here are 3 ways to Setting Up Your Knees For Success:

  1. Touch: Rub your knees, one at a time, to get and keep them warm. Also, envelop them and hold nice, warm pressure on your knee. Try to feel your pulse from the knee--this takes practice. Send them healing energy and love from your hands, then repeat the process on the other knee.

  2. Foam "stick" rolling: This is a hand-held roller that is just like a rolling pin, but a bit skinnier and has a softer coating on the roller. Use this gently on all sides of the muscles around your knees to create relief and comfort.

  3. Movement & stretching: move your knees to your chest in the morning before you get out of bed, then pull your toes to your nose to stretch those lower leg muscles and to create some blood flow and stretching before you put any weight on your ankles or knees in the morning. Also stretch all the muscles leading into your knees to support their continued health.

Problem solving for your knees:

The knees have to do with grounding in the body and work well with the gut/low back and neck. You might also find hints to help your knees in the opposite elbow or shoulder. Right shoulder for the left knee. Left shoulder and elbow for the right hip, knee and ankle.

Become a master of body awareness to really set your body up for success.

I'm starting a series on "How to Set our Body up for Success", and the first of this series is about our Neck.  If our neck is healthy physically, emotionally & spiritually, it's much easier for the entire body to heal.

How do we create issues in and around our neck?

Physically:

-Injuries

-Bad Posture

-Sleep positions

Emotionally:

-Not saying what we need to say

-Not hearing what we need to hear or "digest" or "assimilate"

Spiritually:

-Not receiving gifts or compliments

-Not accepting help

-Not accepting positive vibes towards us, instead deflecting them

3 Ways To Set Our Neck Up For Success:

Physically:

-Strengthen upper back

-Practice good posture

-Deep breathing to open the throat

Emotionally:
(get emotional pain out by:)

-Singing (or humming)

-Massage on neck

-Hot tea

Spiritually:

-Journal

-Pray & talk to God

-Talk out loud to yourself, friends, pets, the wall... just get the words out.

Jennifer Wiese - CEO BeeFree Jennifer Wiese was searching for gluten free foods to help her autistic son's overall wellbeing and quickly found that gluten free and tasty don't often go together so she got busy in the kitchen with her mom. Now 12 years later she's laser focused on bringing delicious snacks full of real ingredients to the world while creating jobs for adults with autism.

BeeFree creates a better for you, snack-able granola called Warrior Mix. It is made with simple, plant-based ingredients, lovingly created by people with autism. BeeFree evolved from my desire to bake tasty gluten and dairy-free treats for our son. Warrior Mix is honey-sweetened and plant-base and free from (gluten, grain, added sugar, preservatives, dairy, soy), and a convenient snack. We believe real ingredients matter and creating food that fuels the body and mind while providing jobs for people with autism is just the right thing to do.

"My start down the culinary trail was not my original plan. I graduated with a degree in fashion marketing but when my son was diagnosed with autism, I found a gluten free diet, and then went on the hunt for gf food our whole family actually liked the taste of. This journey brought me to food creation and finding a love for feeding my family and community clean, real food and creating jobs for other adults with autism along the way."

Partnership with Fueled For School BeeFree was founded out of need for my son to eat gluten free food that actually tasted good to help his overall wellbeing. Once I was forced to pay attention, I realized most food products being sold were full of preservatives and additives the average consumer had no idea were there. At the same time a close friend, Kristina Trusty, a teacher in the area, founded a nonprofit to directly impact the food insecurity she was seeing in our school district. Now we are committed to donating 2% of our sales each month to her organization. Getting clean, real, tasty snacks in the hands of those that can't afford it will always be a key part of our company's growth.

Join me as I discuss college athletics, striving for excellence and staying community focused with Emmanuel Greene, former UNM Lobo. You can also watch this interview here: https://www.ruthcummings.com/blog/emmanuel-logan-greene

This week, I speak with Emmanuel "Manny" Logan Greene, a college football athlete and one of my coaching clients. Our story began when Emmanuel cold-called me to sponsor him by trading massage services for endorsement. Initially, I told him no, but after reflecting on his purpose and tenacity, we came to an agreement and we've been working together ever since.

In this podcast, we discuss what dedications means to an athlete trying to "hone their craft" and what giving back looks like through dedication and philanthropy.

Manny and I have discussed so many things. But when you boil it down, he strives for a 4 point approach to success:

  1. Believe in yourself - the first person who has to back you up is you. You can achieve great things if you begin believing that you are capable.
  2. Work Hard - You have to put in the work. Whether you are staying in shape or texting people, you have to work on your success. That means networking, staying top of mind and keeping ahead of deadline.
  3. Hone your craft - Be prepared for what you want. If you are going after a scholarship, you better be in shape and ready to compete.
  4. Visualize - See yourself communicating with your opponent. See yourself performing. See what it looks like first in your head to be ready for what is coming for real.

In this episode we discuss cleansing a space in your home or house using a smug stick, aromatherapy and prayer. First let's talk about using aromatherapy and prayer to cleanse your spaces of negative energy and past failures. To let go and re-center so that your work space or your sleep space or your whole home can be a place of focus, positive thoughts and energetic resources.

I do this for people so reach out to me if this is something you are interested in. We also do this for our home or when we are utilizing new spaces. In my kit, I keep a few key items. Everything is contained on a plate that was a gift from a dear friend of mine. Bringing items that are meaningful or have positive memories can help bring good energy to what you are doing.

Cleaning Kit: 1) Sage smudge stick. In New Mexico, there is a long tradition of Native Americans using sage to cleanse holy spaces or to ward off bad spirits.

2) Charcoal incense burner, which includes a ceramic bowl and a dish or tray.

3) Frankincense and Myrrh date back before the Wise Men to the Ancient Egyptians and has been used in temples for its intense fragrance and clarifying power.

4) Lavender oil from Santa Fe Lavender.

5) Holy Water

6) Holy Dirt from Chimayo.

7) Paper to list meaningful words you would like the space to represent.

I like to write a prayer specifically to the room or house that we are cleansing.

  1. Ignite Frankincense and Myrrh; add drop of Lavender oil (this will produce a lot of smoke) and ignite sage.
  2. Say your words and then your prayer as you waft smoke around the room. (Don't rush. You probably don't want rushing energy in your living spaces.)
  3. Give thanks to God and move on to the next room.

Part 2 of my Interview with Stacy and Markus Eating for Excellence with Stacy and Markus Naugle Pt. 2

yourveganfamily.com Food is the foundation of our well-being. In the intimate process of eating, we bring food into our bodies and it becomes part of us. It influences how we feel and think, and what we are physically capable of. The food we eat even turns genes off and on, deciding if we will have high cholesterol, arthritis, or even how quickly we heal.

5 Day Fabulous Challenge What we eat can make the difference between success and failure. It’s easy to see how this happens in physical activities, but it extends to business as well. Studies show that healthy employees make an average of 37% more, and retire with 65% more money than unhealthy employees. And healthy entrepreneurs, particularly solo-preneurs, also make more money and experience greater well-being than their unhealthy counterparts. Interestingly, entrepreneurial success is also tied to positive spousal health.

Today we would like to discuss 3 reasons why what you eat matters and our top eating for excellence tips.

  1. Why eating for a healthy gut biome is crucial to our well-being

  2. Physical performance and recovery time enhancements

  3. Eating as an act of self-care

RECIPE: Autumn Lentil Dahl with Beet Greens

Eating for excellence tips

  1. Why changing your diet is like training for a sport

  2. Goodbye picky eaters!

  3. Eat the rainbow

  4. Superpower your meals

  5. Life is a team sport

In this week's episode of Your Body Advocate, I talk about how to create the best team of health professionals to work together on your behalf and make the best team possible for you.

The Western Medicine model has helped millions of people and have many brilliant minds involved to come up with amazing ways to help people.

To make the most of this medical model, these 2 steps are obvious, but can help you make the most of your team: 1. Ask questions: write down the questions so you are sure to have them ready at the right time. 2. Communicate how you respond to your health professional's treatments and suggestions.

When you have gone through the Western Medicine model and you are still struggling, in pain, or just don't feel well, here are some options to help. Look for some other support in your community. Because so many of my clients ask me for names or alternative options to feel better, yet have never heard of some of the treatments I suggest, I wanted to go over a few today.

First, I will list the treatments with the dictionary definition. Next, I will give a few personal examples.

Here are 4 ideas of treatments to try: 1. Acupuncture 2. Chiropractic Care 3. Ayurveda 4. Homeopathy

  1. Acupuncture: A system of integrative medicine that involves pricking the skin orr tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental and emotional conditions. Originating in ancient China, acupuncture is now widely practiced in the West.
  2. Chiropractic Care: A system of integrative medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to house other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs.
  3. Ayurveda: Ayurveda is a form of alternative medicine that is the traditional medicine of India and seeks to treat and integrate body, mind and spirit using a comprehensive holistic approach, especially by emphasizing diet, herbal remedies, exercise, meditation, breathing and physical therapy.
  4. Homeopathy: The medical treatment using cures founded on resemblances; the theory and it's practice that disease is cured by remedies which produce on a healthy person effects similar to the symptoms of the complaint under which the patient suffers, the remedies being usually administered in minute doses.

These are just 4 basic alternative treatments you could try to get a different perspective to your issues if you are not having any luck with Western Medicine.

Episode 6:  How to Find God In Your Body In today's episode I talk about how to find God in your body and some ideas to find satisfying answers to this common question. Many people ask about this: how do they find God, the Holy Spirit, The Higher Power, etc in their body.

I also touch on how this question comes up for those suffering from addiction, with a few tips, but also a mention to listen to the podcast dedicated just to tips for those going through addiction.

If you are asking the question "How do I find God in my body", you could start with these questions to help you start your quest: 1. Why are you asking? Has something changed in your life? Has something happened? 2. Have you felt God, The Holy Spirit, The Higher Power in your body before? 3. What expectations about feeling God do you have NOW that you feel you are missing?

I discuss all of these questions a little more to give examples of how this question can be thought about.

In this week's episode, I talk about how to listen, read and respond to your body's secret insights. In episode 2 we talked about your "Body Story" and how to write down all the things that have happened to your body. When memories of what your body has been through start to show up later, in a hour, a day, a week or longer, these are great clues to what your body has been keeping secret from you.

Also, once these feelings and memories do show up in your memory, I believe that your body is trying to say that you now have the support, energy, time or other parts of your daily environment that make healing of this "secret" possible now that was not possible to heal from in the past.

Paying attention to what your body can tell you, and when, can help you solve mysteries of pain or tension or angst you didn't understand before. Self awareness is a big part of being able to listen and figure out what your body is trying to communicate.

In this week's episode, I talk about how your body, mind and spirit see the world and how it's different for each point of view. When your mind feels that it "is over" the death of a family member, your body could have a very different understanding of that same feeling, and show pain as a "red flag" to get your attention that more healing work is needed.

It can take being quiet with yourself for a time to understand how these different parts of your self are communicating (or not).  We often assume that what our thoughts say in our head are always the truth about our life, our body, our world.

When you can consider your chatter in your head as just one part of your whole, you can make big changes in your life.

In this week's episode, I talk about the basic ways to improve our body-mind connection. This is a common subject in my office with my clients, so I thought we could dedicate a few podcasts to this subject, starting with this one.

3 Basic Steps to Improving Your Body-Mind Connection: 1. Start With Your Wins: focus on what body-mind connections are already working in your life.

  1. Scan Your Body: observe where & what is happening in your body; are you feeling pain, numbness, cold/hot, weakness, tightness, achy, more.

  2. Use Positive Language About Yourself: stay positive in the words you use to describe yourself, your body & your life.

In this week's episode of Your Body Advocate I describe what "Your Body Story" is, how to find it, what to do with this information, and what clues or insights this information can give you about your life, your pain and how to heal better. What is your body keeping SECRET??

The term "Your Body Story" is a description I use in my Body Mind Life Coaching and Massage practice to help us use the same language and term to describe simply: What has happened to your body in your lifetime. It's a list of all the things that our body has gone through.

Our body has a history that we memorize: the injuries, illnesses, accidents, traumas, etc that shape our current life and how our body responds to that life. Sometimes certain painful history of our body is hidden from our everyday description of our past. It's in there, and depending on what history you leave out, which body history you mention 2, 3, 4 times, these can give you hints, ideas and openings to heal your body mind and spirit deeper than you were able to without this information.

So, in today's episode, I'm sharing a snippet of my own body story to give you an example of what you would write down for your own body story.

There are 3 Steps to Finding Your Own Body Story: 1. Make a list of what your body has been through 2. Notice which memories come quickly & which memories don't 3. Feel where and/or what your REACTION is to Making this list

What to Write Down About Your Body Story: * What bugs you, hurts or is tense * Be specific about the TYPE OF reaction: where, what type, sharp pain, achy pain, dry skin, stomach ache, head ache, burning, non-stop, worse at a time of day or season, itching, numbness, weakness * What are the RESPONSES to STIMULUS?

3 Tips to "Listen" & Interpret Your Reaction 1. Become AWARE 2. Breathe when you recognize a tightness 3. Try your best to MATCH which body reactions go with which thought!

In this week's VERY FIRST episode of Your Body Advocate I introduce what this podcast is about, and explain some of the concepts and theories I use to explain how our body and mind communicate, or not. My goal with this podcast is to offer as many little gems and insights with you, to encourage you to listen and fight for your body.

Our body needs a voice in our lives, and we ignore it way too much. If we can "listen" to our body more often and can interpret what it's trying to tell us, we can make small changes to honor those communications and heal more quickly to live a passion filled life.

So, in today's episode, I'm sharing how you can listen to your body, what that even means, and where to start this process of improving your body-mind connection & communication.

I Talk About: * The Basic Decoding of your unique body language * Translating & Understanding what your body is telling you * Your Body Story: what that means and why it's important * How to Create your best Healing Team * Common themes about Emotional Pain
