The Universal Hydronics Formula, often called the "Hydronic Formula," is a fundamental equation used in hydronic heating and cooling systems. These systems utilize water or another liquid as a heat transfer medium to provide heating, cooling, or both to a building or space. The formula helps calculate the energy transfer in such systems and is essential for designing and optimizing their performance.

The Universal Hydronics Formula is expressed as Q = 500 x GPM x dT.

Where:

Q is the heat transfer rate in British Thermal Units per hour (BTU/hr).

ΔT is the temperature difference between the supply and return water (in degrees Fahrenheit).

GPM is the flow rate of the heat transfer medium in gallons per minute.

500 comes from one gallon of water that weighs 8.33 pounds (the weight of water at 60F) times 60 minutes in one hour times the specific heat of water.

It breaks down like this: 500 = 8.33 lbs/gallon x 60 minutes/hour x 1.0 Btu/lb/F

Specific heat refers to the amount of heat energy required to raise the temperature of one pound of a substance by one degree Fahrenheit.

Please note that the specific heat will change if you have glycol or any other fluid than water.

This formula calculates the amount of heat energy transferred through the hydronic system per unit of time. It considers the temperature difference between the input and output water, the heat transfer medium's flow rate, and the medium's specific heat.

Using this formula, engineers and designers can accurately size components of a hydronic system, such as pumps, pipes, and heat exchangers, to ensure efficient heat transfer and optimal system performance. Additionally, it helps determine the heating or cooling capacity required to meet the comfort needs of a building or space.

Abby Massey, PE, PMP, LEED AP, is the Tax Incentives Director for Tax Talker and shares her years of experience with sustainability and energy efficiency, and the Inflation Reduction Act will walk us through the following:

What is 179D, How is it Calculate, What is the Process for Taking a client through a 179D Study, How do Design Firms Qualify, How do Contractors Qualify, Changes to 179D from the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act).

Here is a detailed explanation of Section 179D Energy Efficient Tax Deduction.

The Section 179D tax deduction is a compelling federal tax incentive for companies designing and constructing energy-efficient systems in commercial buildings. Specifically, Section 179D is eligible for work performed on three systems; interior lighting, HVAC (heating, cooling, and ventilation), hot water, and building envelope.

For properties placed into service in 2022 and prior, a tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available for installing these systems, which results in 50% or greater energy savings compared to a baseline standard. There is eligibility to claim a $0.60 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in less energy savings. Properties placed into service in 2021 or 2022 are adjusted for inflation, resulting in a higher deduction rate.

Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, properties placed into service in 2023 or later can now achieve a tax deduction of up to $5 per square foot for achieving 50% or greater energy savings. There is eligibility to claim a $2.50 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in a 25% energy savings, with an additional $0.10 per square foot for every 1% increase in savings.

Qualifying Projects. New construction, renovations, and additions to commercial or high-rise residential buildings most often qualify. At the time of construction or as part of an upgrade process, energy-efficient building systems must be installed that reduce the property’s energy profile compared to a baseline standard. The energy reduction requirement varies based on the energy-efficient system installed in the project. The baseline standard (ASHRAE 90.1) measures the energy savings changes depending on the year the project was completed.

Who Qualifies? Many companies can qualify to claim the Section 179D deduction. In addition to commercial building owners, other companies such as architects, engineers, general contractors, construction managers, energy service providers, and specialty contractors (mechanical, electrical, glazing, etc.) may qualify for their work on buildings owned by government and non-profit entities. In other words, the powerful savings potential is also available to those involved in the design and construction industry.

This video is eligible for PDH credits in most states.

Heat pumps have been in use for decades now. But why all the fuss lately around heat pump applications?

Two words: Electrification and Decarbonization.

Electrification involves substituting traditional energy sources with electricity to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental impact. It is evident in the growing adoption ofelectric vehicles, electric heating, and electrified public transportation.

Simultaneously, decarbonization minimizes carbon dioxide emissions by transitioning to low-carbon alternatives andimplementing sustainable practices. This movement includes a shift to renewable energy sources like solar and wind and efforts to enhance energy efficiency and promote eco-friendly practices in various sectors.

Heat pumps are considered more energy-efficient than traditional heating or cooling systems because they move heat rather than generate it. They are environmentally friendly, as they can be powered by electricity from renewable sources. Heat pumps are increasingly popular for residential, commercial, and industrial applications as part of efforts to reduce energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

In regions with extremely cold temperatures, it's essential to consider the specific requirements and features of the heat pump system. Some advanced heat pump models are designed to operate efficiently in colder conditions, incorporating technologies like variable-speed compressors and improved defrost cycles to enhance performance.

Overall, advancements in heat pump technology continue to address the challenges of cold climates, making them viable and energy-efficient heating solutions even in regions with harsh winter conditions. Regular maintenance and proper sizing of the heat pump system are crucial to ensure optimal performance, regardless of the climate.

The sensible heat ratio (SHR) is a term used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) design to describe the ratio of sensible heat to total heat (sensible plus latent heat) in the air. It is an important parameter to consider when designing HVAC systems because it helps engineers and designers understand the thermal characteristics of the air and make informed decisions about system capacity and performance.

In HVAC design, the SHR is essential for several reasons:

Equipment Sizing: The SHR helps determine the appropriate capacity of heating and cooling equipment. Air conditioning systems should be sized to provide the necessary sensible cooling (temperature control) and latent cooling (humidity control). A higher SHR indicates a greater need for sensible cooling.

Comfort Control: Knowing the SHR helps HVAC designers create indoor environments that are comfortable and meet occupant requirements. For example, in a dry climate with a low SHR, more emphasis may be placed on sensible cooling to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Energy Efficiency: Understanding the SHR can help optimize HVAC system performance. By designing systems with the right balance of sensible and latent cooling, energy consumption can be minimized, leading to cost savings.

Dehumidification: In areas with high humidity levels, it's crucial to consider the latent cooling capacity of the HVAC system to effectively remove moisture from the air and prevent issues like mold growth and discomfort.

In summary, the sensible heat ratio (SHR) is a key parameter in HVAC design that helps determine the balance between sensible and latent heat in the air. It guides equipment sizing, energy efficiency considerations, and comfort control strategies to ensure effective temperature and humidity control in indoor spaces. Electrification involves shifting from fossil fuels to electricity as the primary energy source. In late 2022, the White House contacted ASHRAE to help prepare for the upcoming expiration of Title 42 (in May 2023) and the end of the COVID public health emergency. The government tasked ASHRAE with the job of creating guidance on how to operate buildings in a way to help prevent the spread of airborne infectious illnesses.

During the pandemic, operators of indoor spaces were completely unprepared on how to mitigate and combat the spread of COVID. Proper guidance on how to make indoor spaces safe from the spread of the virus was inconsistent, and many people used untested technologies and inadequate products which were deemed to be ineffective. As a result, a new standard on how to protect people from the spread of infectious airborne illnesses in indoor spaces was needed and ASHRAE became the guiding force behind this initiative.

By December 2022, ASHRAE assembled a SPC (Special Project Committee) under the leadership of William Bahnfleth, a former ASHRAE president, to serve as the leadership behind establishing the framework for the standard. By invitation only, a committee of industry experts and thought leaders, including Tony Abate, the CTO of AtmosAir, came together to work on outlining the standard.

The development of Standard 214 is a multi-faceted approach to address all types of environments, commercial buildings, residential, retail, healthcare, institutional and many others. The standard touches on many aspects of enhancing indoor environments to reduce the spread of infectious aerosols including:

• Infection Risk Management Mode (IRMM) – Establishes requirements for an infection risk management mode (IRMM), which applies during identified periods of elevated disease transmission risk. Authorities having jurisdiction can determine when the enhanced protections of Standard 241 are required. Resilience (the ability to respond to extreme circumstances outside normal conditions) in indoor air quality control design and operations is introduced.

• Requirements for Equivalent Clean Airflow Rate – Sets requirements for equivalent clean airflow rate target per occupant of pathogen free airflow, reducing the risk of infection.

• Requirements for Use of Filtration and Air Cleaning Technology – Provides extensive requirements for use of filtration and air cleaning (such as HEPA filters, air ionizers, or UV lights) to achieve equivalent clean airflow requirements and be cost effective and operate effectively and safely.

• Planning and Commissioning – Provides assessment and planning requirements for being ready for the times when there is an event with increased disease-causing pathogen transmissions. The standard has a building readiness plan, that documents procedure for assessing existing or new HVAC systems to determine if they are working properly and attributing to the equivalent clean air delivered to spaces.

The minimum ventilation requirements are those as published in Standards 62.1, 62.2, and 170. Also, a minimum filtration requirement is set for MERV A-11.

We spend about 90% of our time indoors, so it's important to ensure that the air we breathe is clean and healthy. Unfortunately, the current state of indoor air quality is not good. According to the EPA, indoor air can be up to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air.

Indoor air quality refers to the condition of the air inside buildings and structures, including homes, offices, schools, and public spaces. A bit about Nanosox.

Nanosox is a product that offers a superior alternative to traditional metal ductwork. It provides even and comfortable airflow through fabric permeation and multi-row orifices, resulting in precise air throw and a tridimensional air dispersion effect. Unlike metal ductwork, Nanosox covers a larger area with uniform airflow and avoids blockage by commodity shelves.

Installation is quick and efficient, thanks to specialized cable and track suspension systems. Material waste is reduced, and the installation time is significantly shorter than traditional metal duct systems that require on-site fabrication.

Nanosox ensures reliable quality through large laser production lines and system simulation platforms. All products are manufactured in the factory to guarantee high-pressure resistance, micro-permeability, and other essential properties. In contrast, traditional metal ducts fabricated on-site lack quality assurance.

Here is a detailed explanation of Section 179D Energy Efficient Tax Deduction.

The Section 179D tax deduction is a compelling federal tax incentive available to companies designing and constructing energy-efficient systems in commercial buildings. Specifically, Section 179D is eligible for work performed on three systems; interior lighting, HVAC (heating, cooling, and ventilation), hot water, and building envelope.

For properties placed into service in 2022 and prior, a tax deduction of up to $1.80 per square foot is available for installing these systems, which results in 50% or greater energy savings compared to a baseline standard. There is eligibility to claim a $0.60 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in less energy savings. Properties placed into service in 2021 or 2022 are adjusted for inflation, resulting in a higher deduction rate.

Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, properties placed into service in 2023 or later can now achieve a tax deduction of up to $5 per square foot for achieving 50% or greater energy savings. There is eligibility to claim a $2.50 per square foot deduction for upgrades that result in a 25% energy savings, with an additional $0.10 per square foot for every 1% increase in savings.

New construction, renovations, and additions to commercial or high-rise residential buildings most often qualify. At the time of construction or as part of an upgrade process, energy-efficient building systems must be installed that reduce the property’s energy profile compared to a baseline standard. The energy reduction requirement varies based on the energy-efficient system installed in the project. The baseline standard (ASHRAE 90.1) measures the energy savings changes depending on the year the project was completed.

Many companies can qualify to claim the Section 179D deduction. In addition to commercial building owners, other companies such as architects, engineers, general contractors, construction managers, energy service providers, and specialty contractors (mechanical, electrical, glazing, etc.) may qualify for their work on buildings owned by government and non-profit entities. In other words, the powerful savings potential is also available to those involved in the design and construction industry.

Psychrometrics is a branch of thermodynamics that studies air's physical and thermodynamic properties and the relationships between these properties. The word "psychrometrics" comes from the Greek words "psuchron," which means "cold," and "metron," which means "measure." Therefore, psychrometrics is the measurement of the properties of air, including temperature, humidity, and pressure.

One of the most essential tools used in psychrometrics is the psychrometric chart. The psychrometric chart is a graphical representation of the thermodynamic properties of air. It is a chart that displays the relationships between temperature, humidity, and pressure. The chart calculates the various properties of air, including the dew point, relative humidity, and enthalpy.

To use the psychrometric chart, one must first determine the dry-bulb temperature, which is the air temperature as measured by a thermometer. Next, one must determine the wet-bulb temperature, which is the air temperature as measured by a thermometer with a wet wick. These two temperatures are then used to locate the point on the chart that represents the current state of the air.

Once the current state of the air has been located on the psychrometric chart, it is possible to calculate various properties of the air, such as the dew point, relative humidity, and enthalpy. The dew point is the temperature at which the air must be cooled for water vapor to condense into liquid water. The relative humidity is the ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum amount of water vapor that could be present at the current temperature and pressure. Enthalpy is the total heat content of the air.

Understanding the psychrometric chart is essential for anyone involved in the design, installation, and maintenance of air conditioning and ventilation systems. It is also essential for anyone working in meteorology, agriculture, and industrial processing, where the properties of air play a crucial role.

The HVAC industry offers a range of skilled trades that require specialized training and knowledge. Some of the most common skilled trades in the HVAC industry include:

1) HVAC Technician: HVAC technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in homes, businesses, and other buildings. They may work with various equipment, including furnaces, boilers, air handlers, and refrigeration systems.

2) Sheet Metal Worker: Sheet metal workers fabricate, install, and maintain sheet metal products, including ductwork, siding, roofs, and gutters. They use specialized tools and equipment to shape and cut metal, and must have a strong understanding of HVAC systems.

3) Pipefitter: Pipefitters install and maintain pipes that carry water, steam, or other materials used in heating and cooling systems. They may also install gas lines and other pipes used in HVAC systems.

4) Refrigeration Technician: Refrigeration technicians specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems, including commercial refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioning systems.

5) Electrician: Electricians work with electrical systems, including those used in HVAC systems. They install and maintain electrical components such as motors, switches, and control systems.

6) Controls Technician: Controls technicians are responsible for installing and maintaining the electronic controls used in HVAC systems. They must have a strong understanding of computer programming and electronics.

So, what’s causing the shortage? Many HVAC technicians are reaching retirement age, and there aren’t enough young people entering the field to replace them. This is partly due to a lack of awareness about career opportunities in HVAC and the lack of vocational training programs in schools.

  1. Authenticity: Viewers appreciate authenticity in online content. They want a genuine perspective on a topic rather than a staged or overly polished version.

  2. Value Over Quality: Never let production quality stop you from posting value-driven content. The quality comes from its value to the viewer—education, entertainment, etc. Don't be the judge; let the audience judge the content.

  3. Relatability: Great content comes from the heart and connects to emotional or intellectual truths. This is something that I'm trying to get better at.

  4. Relevance: The content should be relevant to its intended audience. It should be something that people can relate to, addressing their interests or concerns.

Every six years, the Department of Energy (DOE) reanalyzes the effects of energy usage, sets minimum efficiency requirements, and manages the testing standards by which those efficiencies are measured. In 2018 the DOE started the first phase of its six-year plan requiring a 13% increase in energy efficiency for commercially packaged air conditioners, heat pumps, and split systems. The second phase of this plan will start in 2023.

The DOE has also reanalyzed and adjusted the minimum efficiencies of single-phase air conditioners and heat pumps, 5 tons or less. KEY DIFFERENCE:Single-phase and residential products must also comply with a new testing procedure for developing efficiency ratings.

Compared to today’s test procedure, the external static pressure used when testing will be increased by up to 5X, which will more closely representactual field conditions. Since the new testing requirements are more stringent and reduce the resulting efficiency rating, there will be new metrics andnomenclature — SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2. On the same system, compared to SEER ratings, the new SEER2 ratings will be lower, and the minimum efficiencies will be reduced to account for the more demanding test procedure required for 2023 products.

All “RESIDENTIAL” air conditioners AND Heat Pumps must comply with the Department of Energy’s minimum efficiency standard requirements on January 1st,2023.

The testing requirements will be more stringent but also more accurate, and the metrics will be referred to as SEER2, HSPF2, and EER2. These testing procedure changes ONLY apply for single-phase equipment less than or equal to 65,000 Btuh.

AHRI 210/240-2023 (2020), first published in May 2020, establishes a method to rate residential central air conditioners and heat pumps consistent with the new DOE test procedure. The energy efficiency metrics, expressed in terms of Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER2), Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER2), and Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF2), are required for representations coincident with the compliance date of the new efficiency standards in theUnited States starting on January 1, 2023.

The primary changes in this edition of AHRI 210/240 are those required to align with the new performance metrics and requirements of Appendix M1 of 10 CFR 430 (Code of Federal Regulations), as issued by the U.S. Department of Energy (82 FR 1426, January 2017). A working group of many stakeholders (including but not limited to AHRI members, independent laboratories, energy advocates, and DOE consultants) met periodically over the course of two years to evaluate necessary changes and improvements in language.

Because compliance with the Appendix M1 test procedure and ratings are not mandatory until January 1, 2023, AHRI has chosen “2023” as the year version of this standard.

We talk about the status of the current EPA refrigerant regulations, including the EPA's NOPR (notice of proposed rule), the critical milestones for R410A equipment manufacturing, and the current R410A phase downtime schedule.

We also show the properties of the two via R410A alternatives, R32 and R454B. In particular, we show the meaning of A2L refrigerants as explained in ASHRAE 34-2022, Designation and Safety Classification of Refrigerants, which is a shorthand way of naming refrigerants and assigning safety classifications based on toxicity and flammability data.

We delve into the benefits and drawbacks of each low GWP refrigerant, exploring factors such as its global warming potential, energy efficiency, and flammability.

Refrigerants play a critical role in the functioning of air conditioning and refrigeration systems. They are responsible for transferring heat from the indoor or outdoor space to the refrigeration unit, allowing for temperature control. However, the impact of refrigerants on the environment is a growing concern. Many commonly used refrigerants have high global warming potential (GWP), contributing to climate change. In recent years, there has been a push to develop and adopt refrigerants with lower GWP, leading to the emergence of new refrigerants with unique properties.

Two such refrigerants are R32 and R454B. R32 is a pure hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant, while R454B is a blend of HFC and hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants. While these refrigerants offer lower GWP, they have unique properties that distinguish them from each other.

Both have similar performance to R410A. Both have a similar performance to each other. Both are classified as A2L, mildly flammable refrigerants. Both have a lower GWP than R410A.

R32 is a single-component refrigerant. It is a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant, meaning it can ignite in the presence of an ignition source but only under certain conditions. R32 has a low GWP of 675, making it an attractive option for environmentally conscious companies.

R454B is a zeotropic blend of HFC and HFO refrigerants, 69% R32 and 31% R1234yf. It is a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant with a low GWP of 466. R454B was developed as a potential replacement for high-GWP refrigerants like R410A.

For those of us who have been around awhile, you may be very familiar with R22 and even R12. Past Transitions were driven by Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP).

While heat pumps are not a new technology, first invented in 1856 to dry salt in the Austrian salt marshes, they've come a long way since then. As HVAC professionals, we must stay informed about the different heat pump technologies available today to serve our customers and clients better.

Several heat pump technologies are available, each with advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the most common types:

  1. Air-source heat pumps: This heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air to heat indoor spaces. They are suitable for moderate climates where temperatures don't drop below zero.

  2. Water-source heat pumps: These heat pumps extract heat from water sources, such as a lake or river, or more commonly, water cooled in a cooling tower. They are highly efficient and can be used in all climates but require a nearby water source.

  3. Heat Pump Chillers: These are conventional centrifugal chillers modified to serve as heat pumps.

  4. Heat Pump Water Heaters: Dedicated heat pumps are designed to transfer heat from the ambient air to water.

  5. VRF heat pumps: These systems offer many advantages over traditional ducted systems, such as energy efficiency, individual temperature control, and flexible design. However, they also have disadvantages, such as the higher initial cost and increased maintenance expertise requirements.

  6. Ground-source heat pumps: Also known as geothermal heat pumps, these systems extract heat from the ground using a series of pipes buried beneath the surface. They are highly efficient and can be used in all climates but are more expensive to install.

Relative Humidity: Not a good measure of water in the air (absolute humidity). RH is the percentage of moisture in the air vs. how much it can hold. It answers the question, “how full is the container”?

Dew Point: The atmospheric temperature below which water droplets begin to condense, and dew can form. This is an accurate measurement of water in the air (humidity).

Relative Humidity: Not a good measure of water in the air (absolute humidity). RH is the percentage of how much moisture is in the air vs. how much it can hold. It answers the question “how full is the container”?

Dew Point: The atmospheric temperature below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form. This is an accurate measurement of water in the air (humidity). We also look at Dry Bulb, Wetbulb (Illustrating with a Sling Psychrometer), Humidity in Grains/LB of dry air.

In this podcast, I discuss the difference between a Copeland Digital Scroll Compressor and a Danfoss Variable Speed Compressor. These two HVAC modulating scroll compressor technologies accomplish similar results but are constructed differently.

The Copeland Scroll Digital offers compressor modulation from 10-100 percent, allowing cooling systems to automatically adjust capacity as needed while reducing energy consumption. This scroll technology allows for precise HVAC system control, is more efficient than on/off compressors, and allows for almost continuous operation during dehumidification modes. Variable-capacity control is accomplished by timing the compression by engaging and disengaging the top scroll while motor speed remains constant. Advantages are efficiency, precise control, very low turn down to 10%, and constant velocity refrigerant allowing for effective oil return. For some of the compressor sizes, the "modulating" can produce unwanted noise. Special considerations for location and attenuation are recommended. 

Emerson’s Copeland Scroll Variable Speed compressors are designed with AC drive controls that modulate the compressor speed. This compressor speed modulation allows for precise capacity control. Advantages are efficiency, low acoustical characteristics, and precise control. Special considerations are required to ensure oil return which usually prohibits low turndown capabilities. Usually, the minimum allowable turn down is in the 10-25% range.

Noise is a topic that plays a major role in any HVAC system yet it is a topic that is either misunderstood or not very well understood in the HVAC world. People constantly confuse key terms, definitions, and commonly rated values. 

Some examples of those terms are sound unit dB vs. dB(A); HVAC Sound Pressure vs. HVAC Sound Power; AHRI 260.2011 vs. AHRI 260.2017, A-Weighted Sound, to name a few.

So, in this course, we will go back to the basics of sound where we will define commonly used key terms, review the concepts of acoustics and frequency, understand the difference between sound pressure and sound power, and review how sound is measured in the HVAC units. We will wrap up with some case studies which will help to determine how room construction and unit construction can affect the NC (noise criteria) rating of a given room.

We will also show real-life examples of mitigating HVAC Equipment Noise.

What is a Decibel A pressure variation in a sound wave can be measured in micro Pascal's to determine its loudness. The greater the pressure variation there is in a sound wave, the louder it'll be. The micro Pascal is an actual physical measurement of the pressure variation in a sound wave.  the weakest sound detectable by the human ear is 20 micro Pascal's.  To put this into perspective a pressure change at this level causes the eardrum to displace less than the diameter of a hydrogen molecule. At the same time, the ear can also withstand pressure changes more than a million times this lower threshold. This type of measurement would result in a rather large and awkward scale. To avoid this another scale is used the decibel or DB scale. 

A-weighted sound in HVAC System Acoustics A-weighted sound criteria are commonly used in outdoor sound evaluations - and are often incorporated into city building codes when referencing the maximum acceptable sound pressure levels at the property line. It is popular because it is a single number that most sound meters include.

The Use of NC Criteria in HVAC Units Noise Criteria, or NC, is used as a standard describing or expressing the complexity of relative loudness of a space within a range of frequencies, where the acoustical environment greatly influences the amplitudes and frequencies heard by the occupant.  So, simply stated, NC is the Sound Pressure at each Octave Band - with an NC of 35 referenced as the most common noise level specified for HVAC equipment.

HVAC Sound and Frequency The frequency which is measured in hertz is the number of pressure variations that occur per second in a sound wave the sounds frequency produces a distinctive tone. This is why a flute that has a high frequency and a bass drum that has a low-frequency sound is so different. 

What is the difference between Sound Power vs. Sound Pressure in HVAC Systems? SOUND POWER and SOUND PRESSURE are often presented when discussing Acoustics for buildings. Engineers must clearly distinguish and understand the difference between SOUND POWER and SOUND PRESSURE levels.

AHRI defines SOUND POWER as ACOUSTIC POWER, which is, in a specific frequency band, the rate at which the total airborne sound energy is radiated by a source, measured in watts. Simply stated, this means SOUND POWER is the rate at which total Sound Energy is emitted, radiated, reflected, or transmitted by a sound source, per unit time - or basically, WHAT SOUND THE EQUIPMENT GENERATES, converted to SOUND PRESSURE as it then propagates out to the room or space.

AHRI, therefore, defines this propagated SOUND PRESSURE, or ACOUSTIC PRESSURE, as a fluctuating pressure superimposed on the air static pressure by the presence of sound. Simply stated, this means that SOUND PRESSURE is WHAT OUR EARS HEAR, which is the result of a sound source radiating Sound Energy into a specific acoustical environment - and measured at a specific location as Decibels (dB), which we have already discussed.

To calculate SOUND PRESSURE, the SOUND POWER of the equipment is used along with specific transfer formulas that define how the sound pressure is absorbed or reflected off the surfaces in the space.  

The conversion details are unique to the materials used in the space and when applied result in an application-specific sound pressure level. The GREATER the SOUND PRESSURE, more energy is carried by that sound, and the LOUDER the perception to that sound becomes.

5 Reasons To Consider Vertical Inline (VIL Pumps) Pumps vs. End Suction Pumps:

INSTALLATION Split Coupled Vertical In-Line pumps, being integral components of the pipework, eliminate the need for inertia bases, inertia base springs, flexible pipe connectors, field grouting, and alignment. Pipe hangers sized for the weight of the pump, piping, and fittings are the only supports required. Pipe stools, with vibration isolating pads, may be installed under each pipe leg.

MAINTENANCE The mechanical seal is the critical service item in any pump. Removal of the Series 4300 split spacer coupling allows all mechanical seal components to be withdrawn for servicing, through the resulting space between the pump and motor shafts, without disturbing other pump components or motor connections. Re-installing the rigid coupling brings the unit rotating assembly back to factory alignment specifications.

RELIABILITY Dynamically balanced impeller and shaft assembly rotating vertically on the Series 4300 centerline translate to a quiet, long-lasting pump with minimum vibration, as static shaft deflection is eliminated. There are no pump bearings to service in the Vertical In-Line design. Series 4300 is a reliable, time-proven unit with less downtime.

HOT GAS REHEAT uses the high pressure, high temperature, compressor discharge gas to reheat the air leaving the evaporator coil. This is achieved by running the gas through a hot gas reheat coil using hot gas reheat valves. Hot gas reheat is typically used in dehumidification modes to meet the desired space sensible temperature set point. Modulating hot gas reheat, the more advanced form of reheat, allows us to precisely control the HVAC system leaving air temperature. As opposed to the older style electric reheat, which works well but wastes a lot of energy. Advances in HVAC controls and technology in HVAC systems over the years have made hot gas reheat very popular.

HOT GAS BYPASS provides an artificial load on the evaporator by introducing a portion of high pressure, high-temperature gas to the evaporator/suction side of the system. An inexpensive and simple way to keep the HVAC system running without freezing the coil but a huge energy waster. The hot gas bypass valve is old technology used on a limited basis today quickly being replaces by modulating compressors or variable capacity compressors.

In this LIVE online event, Eric Norris, PE, AAON Regional Manager, and Tony Mormino, Director of Marketing with Insight Partners, dispel 5 common myths surrounding DX dehumidification equipment.

Our focus is on humidity control, capacity modulation, and reheat vs. hot gas bypass.

MYTH 1:  %RH Is An Accurate Way To Measure Humidity We show how Dew Point is a more accurate way to measure humidity. Dew point is the temperature at which the air is saturated (100 percent relative humidity). It is dependent on only the amount of moisture in the air. Relative humidity is the percent of saturation at a given temperature; it depends on moisture content and temperature.

MYTH 2: Hot Gas Reheat Removes Humidity HOT GAS REHEAT uses the high pressure, high temperature, compressor discharge gas to reheat the air leaving the evaporator coil. Hot gas reheat is typically used in dehumidification modes to meet the desired space sensible temperature set point. 

MYTH 3: Hot Gas Bypass Is Similar To Hot Gas Reheat Hot gas bypass can stabilize the system balance point by diverting hot, high-pressure refrigerant vapor from the discharge line directly to the low- pressure side of the system. This tactic reliable operation by introducing problems stemming from insufficient oil return and refrigerant logging in the HGBP line.

MYTH 4: My Digital Scroll Is Short Cycling! The digital scroll compressor modulates output by separating the scrolls on a duty cycle, essentially a mechanical way of turning the compressor on/off as necessary while keeping the motor running.

MYTH 5: Why 55F LAT? This is not always the most efficient way to reach our control objective. We discuss this in detail.
