Charisse Gibbs is the creator of Making Sense with Charisse. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Family Studies from the University of Maryland College Park and her master’s degree in Human Services Counseling from Liberty University. Currently, Charisse works as the Senior Director of Family Services for the Baltimore County Head Start Program. She has spent her working life committed to helping others become their best selves. In her newest venture, she is passionate about helping people understand how to use budgeting as a tool to help them reach their goals. She is motivated to succeed by her greatest inspirations, her children Lael and Lee III (Tre).

Charisse gave us some tips and strategies to help us begin to transform our personal finances, starting with a budget.

The first thing is to change your mindset about budgets. BUDGET is NOT a bad word, ok? Charisse told us that a budget is simply a plan for our money.

Next, we need to identify our goals. And last, looking over past bank statements, determine where you’ve been spending your money. All these tips are a great starting point to creating a solid plan for every dollar you bring in.

A MOMENT OF SELF-REFLECTION: Am I building my wealth or stealing from my future wealth?

And remember, a budget is simply a plan for your money.

Charmayne Wilson is the mom of 2 awesome young men, Judah, who’s living his dream as a musical artist and singer, and Cai, a freshman living out his dream on the college football field. Charmayne herself is a graduate of the University of Alabama, a worship pastor, and a Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. Charmayne is impactful in ministry and has moved masses to tears with her beautiful singing voice.

Over the years, Charmayne’s motivation has shifted. Like most parents, her focus was first directed towards her children and being a good, present parent. But as she is transitioning into being an empty nester, she has now turned her attention (and free time) to create a platform that uses her life and testimony as examples that nothing is impossible, and that when it comes to accomplishing anything, just remember - it doesn’t have to be perfect, you just have to get it done.

Whatever your background or however you got started, you have the power and strength to create the life you want for yourself, your family, and your generations.

  • Connect with a mentor who can share their experiences and lessons learned with you. Take in their wisdom and then take action. It’s so helpful to have someone who understands what you’re going through and can lend some insights to help you manage.
  • Adrienne’s 4 tips to managing your responsibilities were pure gold! Here they are:

I wanted to have this conversation with Dr. Zoe because over the years, I’ve come across more and more people who are acknowledging the importance and valuing the impact of therapy, and how important our mental health is to our success in life, as a parent, as an entrepreneur, as a person. And who better to have this conversation with than someone who helps people every day? So let me introduce you to my guest

Dr. Zoe Shaw is a licensed psychotherapist, motivational speaker, podcast host, life coach and fitness fanatic. She is passionate about helping women who struggle in difficult relationships- especially that sometimes difficult relationship with themselves.

After 15 years in traditional psychotherapy practice, Dr. Zoe jumped off the couch and now helps women using a different modality with a mix of virtual therapy, coaching services and programs designed specifically for women trying to have it all, who sometimes struggle in the superwoman game.

Dr. Zoe is a graduate of UCLA and Pepperdine University. She is a frequent blogger (writing about helping women redefine their Superwoman) and loves answering women's burning questions in her advice column at the Grit and Grace Project (an online women's magazine).

Some notes from the episode:

Dr. Zoe laid out the following suggestions to consider when looking for a therapist:

  1. Find a connection
  2. Understand their qualifications
  3. What are their fees? Do they accept your insurance?
  4. Are their values/faith/cultural practices in alignment with what you need or want in a therapist?

When I asked her about being uncomfortable with a session or in a therapist’s office, she said “SPEAK UP”. If no one told you before, please listen to me today - if you are uncomfortable, or not getting the level of care you expected, please speak up.

Co-parenting is not an easy task. It takes a level of maturity that requires effective and open communication, and a whole lot of grace.

In this episode, I pay homage to my late ex-husband, Alex, without whom I never would have learned these invaluable lessons about co-parenting.

I decided to honor Alex the week of what would have been his 48th birthday by sharing some of the things we learned that helped us to successfully co-parent our two children.

  1. Let Go
  2. Grant Some Grace
  3. The Children Are the Priority

Following these three principles helped us to put the past behind us, and move forward with our children’s best interest at heart.

I hope this episode helps someone to bring their family together. Let’s cherish the time we have with each other; and if we’re not in a relationship with our child’s parent, your child still deserves a relationship with that other parent.

Have you ever questioned yourself after making a decision? Do you have a hard time making choices? Maybe you make the choice, but then spend countless hours wondering about the “what ifs”.

Listen. I get it. It’s not always easy to trust yourself to make the right decision. Sometimes you might even feel like you have no choice in a matter.

Know this: You always have a choice.

But how do you decide which path to take? How do you know you’re making the right choices?

Well, I’m going to give you 5 tips that I learned over the years that have helped me to gain confidence around making decisions:

  1. Trust yourself to make the best choice.
  2. Make sure you have enough information to make a choice.
  3. Give yourself a deadline and then make a decision.
  4. Learn to be okay with your decision.
  5. if you’re still not sure what to do or what direction to take, talk to someone you trust.

Roniece Valentine wears a lot of hats. CEO of both Soul Ascensions LLC (an online marketplace) and Elite Epic Events (an event planning business); a homeschooling mom; and a Psychic Medium, just to name a few.

This episode is all that and a bag of chips. Yep. I said it. And I'm not taking it back.

Roniece let us know, in no uncertain terms, that we absolutely can NOT pour from an empty cup. How can we expect to be of service to others when we're burnt out, ill-equipped, and scatterbrained? You see, before we can empower anyone else, we must empower ourselves.
