Beauty for Ashes: Broken Yet Beautiful in God's Eyes
Isaiah prophesied and Jesus confirmed that he was sent to bind up the brokenhearted, to comfort all who mourn and to give beauty for ashes. God says, in and through Jesus, that we are broken but beautiful in His eyes.
The picture of Jesus fishing with nets is close to the idea of evangelism that he had in mind when he called his disciples. Evangelism "by net" is a picture of what church is supposed to be - accepting, helping and loving people right where they are. How can we weave a net of relationship in new and life-giving ways?
In God's call for us to advance the kingdom of God in our day and in our own hometown, who is it that God might be leading us to spend time with, invite into our personal lives and to invest in, for their benefit? Let's look to the beginning of Jesus' public ministry in Matthew 4:1-22 to help us answer this question.
In chapter 4 of the book of Matthew, Jesus gives us some fishing advice. Hear what he says in this week's message about not using our own power, but relying on His strength.
The truth of the gospel is most fully witnessed in the restored and restoring relationships of authentic Christian community. It very well could be what church was intended to be when God invited us to be a part of His family. It's the authentic community of Christ, in its shared life together that, itself, becomes the witness of Christ in the world.

Following Jesus Christ is about becoming fully alive in Christ. It is not about settling for less than we hoped; it is about longing for more—living and praying our way through all the ways we may have settled in the past until we see the truth. In its longing for fullness of being, it is “like the sun warming a seed into life, like the work of clearing away rocks and weeds, and bringing water to the interior garden. Like those seeds, we may need to allow God to love our shallow selves by naming even our disordered longings in God’s presence until, by God’s grace, the deepest desire is revealed. Only then will God’s own soil, watering and light reveal the interior garden where God’s Word seeks to produce new life and new fruit.
