Bonnicel Yoga: Recent Episodes

Camilla Bonnicel

A student of mine gave me the inspiration and encouragement to share part of the themes I’m using in my classes as ‘food for thought’. My hope the topics will inspire a bit of reflection and give some inspiration on how to live life with more awareness!!

Why do we complicate it so much?

Why do we think that it’s only a full hour of hard intense workout that counts?

In this episode I’ll focus on some easy tips to create more movement.. and tell why it’s so important

This is not an ordinary book review. You can find other really good ones about this book. This episode is instead about my take on the topic of ‘Essentialism’.

Maybe you’re thinking that this does not concern you, that you never steal, so why bother??!

The first time I read about this, the third of the yamas; Asteya, I realized that I did indeed steal much more than I thought.

There are different ways in which we can be ‘stealing’. We can steal from others, from the earth, from the future and also, in the end from ourselves 🙏🏼  Another challenging ‘ethical guideline’ from the yoga philosophy to ponder about.

Previous episodes on the yamas:

Episode 3: Non-violence

Episode 6: Truthfulness

In this episode I share a few thoughts on the concept of change and how we can deal with it ‘going too slow’.

Often we ignore the power of ‘small steps’ and think it always have to be big in order to be powerful enough to create the change we desire.   Hopefully this episode can give you some useful perspective 🙌🏼 . . . . .

Why is it so bloody hard creating a new habit, even a good and rather enjoyable one??!

And how come it feels like I get a lot less done even though I in theory have more time, especially now during the lockdown?

In this episode I’m sharing two tricks to use when trying to add new habits to your life. Hopefully you’ll find them inspiring 😉

As always, it’s nice hearing from you.. do you recognize yourself in my story? What are your best tips on building new habits?

‘You would not let your phone run out of battery. Don’t let it happen to you either.’

How do you recharge yourself?

Our brains are literally not evolved for handling this copious amount of information that we feed it with daily.

When do you give your brain a well deserved ‘time off’?

One of the smartest things you can do, is to begin to incorporate moments when you ‘recharge’ yourself and your ‘battery’. In this episode I give a few suggestions on what you can do.

I’d love to hear what your favorite tips for recharging might be.. please leave a comment to share 🙏🏼 //C

As the expression goes; “It’s funny when people think ‘yoga people’ are supposed to be calm. No. We’re all here because we’re nuts!” 😂

This is so true for me. I used to be so angry. I would get angry for the smallest of things.

Yoga is definitely one of the things that has helped me put things in perspective, to change the story I ‘had in my head’.

Yoga has helped me calm the f down 🤬😏

The second Yama is Satya, or Truthfulness as it’s translated to in English, is not necessarily making life easier to live.

‘Why do we lie? Are we afraid to hurt someone’s feelings? Are we afraid if we told the truth we would not be liked anymore?

This one contains a lot of insights. And struggles as well. And as the author writes ‘truth rarely seems to ask the easier choice of us.’

There are a lot of areas in this one that is worth coming back to. Let me know if there is anything particular that ‘catches your attention’ and that you’d like me to focus on a little bit more 🙏🏼  As always, I hope you’ve enjoyed this episode. I look forward to reading your comments ☺️

One of my favorite themes and that I come back to often is the ‘power of choice’.

Having lots of choices is both a blessing and a curse.

Having too many choices can often drain us. And leave us feel insecure if we’ve done the right choice or not.

Having too few, or feeling we have no choices at all, can leave us feel powerless.

We often forget how much choice we actually have in our daily life.

I’ve been taught to ask questions. More questions in order to understand better, and to learn more. My mom used to say ‘ask a question and you’re a fool for five minutes, don’t ask and you’ll be a fool for life’.

A few years ago I discovered ‘big talks’ as a concept and I was, as you can perhaps imagine, hooked straight up. I love to use this kind of questions as an icebreaker. To get away from the ‘boring’ ordinary questions and instead go deeper.

Here are a few examples that I mention in the talk: What have you started, but never finished, and why? * What is one question you’d ask a fortune teller? * What object would you save if your house were on fire? * If money were no concern, how would you live your life differently?

Do you use these kind of questions? Can you see yourself giving it a go? Please share your thoughts in a comment

The 10 ‘ethical’ guidelines according to the yoga philosophy offer practical guidance to ‘make skillful moment-to-moment choices’.

At the end of the day (and at the end of your life) is HOW WELL you have participated in YOUR OWN LIFE - both the ordinary routines and the extraordinary surprises.

Ahimsa, asks us to step lightly, do no harm, and honor the relationship we have with the earth, with each other, and with ourselves 🙏🏼

I hope you enjoy this slightly longer episode, packed full with yogic wisdom on how to live well.

The book I refer to is: The Yamas & Niyamas by Deborah Adele
