Hi, we’re Shannon and Gerry Arner, your hosts (and our pup, Betty White) After owning our own business, working 24/7 (and a mental breakdown in between), we made a lifestyle change and decided to make the most out of life. We sold our house, most of our belongings, downsized, and moved to the coast. We live life minimally, but fully. We live each day as an adventure! This show will help you learn how to live life more fully, with more intention, by experiencing more, and with less stuff. Come join our adventure! It’s the Arner Adventures Podcast!
Adventure has a reputation for being loud, fast, and filled with constant activity. People often picture bustling streets, guided tours, or adrenaline-pumping excursions.
What we have learned, though, is that adventure does not always require noise or movement. Some of the most meaningful experiences come when you step into silence and allow yourself to notice what is already happening around you. We dive into the power of silence on this episode.

Travel and adventure are often portrayed as something that requires a considerable budget, but we have found that some of our best memories didn’t cost us a thing.
Whether we are at home in Beaufort or exploring new streets elsewhere, the experiences that stick with us the most are often the ones we stumble upon for free.
Living intentionally means recognizing that adventure is less about money and more about mindset.

You may not know exactly what the pull is, but often, you feel the sign. The sign is that something has to change. There are times in life when you cannot continue on the same path. We’ve been there.
Life doesn’t always hand you a giant flashing sign that says, “Time for a reset.”
It can be a creeping feeling you can’t quite put your finger on. It can also be a catastrophic mental or physical health issue. Again, we know this well. That’s why we want to share some of the signs that it might be time for you to hit reset today.

It's easy to romanticize the idea of escaping.
Book the flight, leave the stress behind, and start fresh in a new place. But what happens when escaping becomes more than a vacation?
What if it becomes the way we cope with everyday life?
This question has been on our minds because our own significant lifestyle change was, in many ways, an escape from our previous lives.

Cruises have always had a reputation that swings from dreamy to disastrous.
For some, it’s the ultimate vacation: unlimited food, sparkling blue water, and a floating city that takes you from one tropical port to the next.
For others, cruises are associated with headlines like the infamous “Poop Cruise,” which recently appeared on Netflix, or haunting stories like the disappearance of Amy Bradley.
With such extreme narratives, it can be hard to know what to believe. The truth about cruise culture lies somewhere in between.
We dive into the truth about cruise culture.

We have all had those moments where someone, usually with the best intentions, drops a nugget of wisdom on us.
The kind of advice that is supposed to set you up for a secure, prosperous, and happy life.
The only problem? Sometimes that "wisdom" is not meant for you. Over the years, we have ignored much of the advice we were given that we were told would guarantee the so-called "good life." We're sharing what we are thankful that we ignored.

We thought slowing down would be the simple part. Just do less, stress less. How hard could it be? Turns out, it felt kind of…off. It felt like we were missing something or forgetting a task.
And yep, the guilt showed up fast. If you've ever tried to take it easy and immediately felt weird about it, we get it.
We're talking about why it feels weird to slow down and ways to overcome that feeling.

When we decided to downsize our lives, we weren’t just talking about square footage or closet space.
We were peeling back years of shoulds, pressure, and “normal” that didn’t feel like ours.
Somewhere along the way, what we thought were needs turned out to be noise, loud, stressful, expensive noise.
We're sharing what we thought were needs, but looking at it with a different lens, we now know they were not, in hopes that you can evaluate your own needs vs. wants.🔗 Links + Resources:

It may sound woo-woo, but we have learned many lessons from nature and learned a lot about ourselves.
We’ve always known we loved being outside, but we didn’t realize just how much nature had been quietly teaching us over the years. It’s been our backdrop, our sounding board, our reset button.
And more often than not, it’s shown us who we really are just by letting us slow down long enough to notice.

Implementing some simple outdoor habits is easier than you think.
We live in a world where we’re encouraged to hustle, stay plugged in, and fill every moment with something “productive.” But we’ve learned that sometimes, the most productive thing we can do is step outside. Not for a hike, not for a whole afternoon, just for a moment.
As part of Great Outdoors Month, we’re sharing how little outdoor habits have quietly transformed our days and how you can try them, too.

Being unavailable isn’t something that is rude or makes you a recluse. We used to think being reachable 24/7 was just part of running a business. But truthfully? It nearly wrecked our peace. We realized we were burned out somewhere between the never-ending notifications and guilt-ridden response times. Now, we’ve flipped the script, and being unavailable has never felt more freeing.
We’re sharing how we set boundaries for being unavailable, while maintaining a business, relationships, and our mental health.

When you are told to trust your intuition, what exactly does that mean?
There’s a phrase I’ve (Shannon) said more times than I can count: “I should’ve gone with my gut.” And almost every time I don’t listen to it, I regret it. You’d think I’d learn by now, right?
The truth is that trusting your intuition isn’t always easy. It’s quiet. It doesn’t beg for attention. It nudges. There is a whisper. Sometimes it nags. That's what we are talking about this week: going with your gut and how to listen to it.

You have heard the term before: health is wealth. Taking care of your health is one of the most important values you can give yourself. Not only is he one of the most positive people we know, but he is also a walking motivational speaker without prompting. He truly is a natural-born leader. It’s not often that you find someone who can make mental health fun, and this guest does that, and we are here for it! We love bringing mental health into the regular conversation, today’s guest does such a great job of that! Today’s “Spark in Our Lives” episode guest is Lindsey Konchar.
There is some subject matter in this podcast conversation surrounding suicide. We highly recommend that if you have the thoughts of harming yourself, you call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or you can visit suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ We take the topic of mental health seriously. Please reach out for help if you feel that you are having your own mental health issues or questions at all.
Let us tell you about Lindsey Konchar: Lindsey is a licensed graduate social worker which basically means she brings some credentialed experience to the mental health world. Lucky for us! Now, she is a mom by day and a social worker by heart. While she has been thrilled to be a stay-at-home mom, she knew she couldn’t lose who she was along the way. That was vital to her! She found a way to use the clinical skills she had developed in her practice, hold on to the work she loved so much and write a friggin’ book (those are her words). It’s called “I Got 99 Coping Skills and Being a B*tch Ain’t One”. Best. Title. Ever!

It's Women's History Month, and our guest is the perfect shining light for women. Today’s episode is a “Spark in our lives” guest episode where we interview someone who is a spark in our lives. She puts so many good vibes out into the world, but she does so much for women, lifting them up. Our guest this week is mental health advocate, self-care queen, and lifestyle blogger, LaToi Storr, also known as Toi.
Let us tell you about LaToi Storr: Toi is a lifestyle blogger, podcaster, and content creator. Her other responsibilities include being a wife and mother of three. As a content creator her stance has always been to talk about mental health, which resonates with us, of course.
When she first started her blog 7 years ago, it was after her therapist encouraged her to tell her story and write– as this was her passion. Since then, she has gone on to speak at conferences. She is SheMedia partner- through SheMedia and the BlogHer conferences is how we connected, and we are so thankful we did.
Her goals will remain to uplift, encourage, and help other women with her storytelling. She is dedicated to telling the stories even when things don't look glamorous. In her spare time you can find her walking the aisles of Target (with no shame) or at a coffee shop making sure she is getting her self-care time. We are so thankful she took some of her self-care time to chat with us on our podcast.
In this episode we chat about: * How she got started as a blogger, and opening herself up in a vulnerable way. * Her experience with post-partum depression and writing about it to help others. * True authenticity and not hiding anything on social media, aka, "the internet streets". * The "Self-Care Queen's" recommended easy self-care routine. * What motivates Toi to lift others up! * Toi's podcast, Conversations with Toi. * Toi answers our 10 rapid fire questions, and the most important question, "What does a life well lived mean to you?"
Episode resources: * You can find Toi Storr here and her podcast here. * Toi being authentic on the internet streets ;) * Sign-up to be “in the know” with our upcoming podcast guest list, and be able to submit questions before we record each episode. * You can always find us on our blog or Instagram Please let us know your thoughts on this episode, or others. We highly recommend that if you have the thoughts of harming yourself, that you call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or you can visit suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ We take the topic of mental health seriously. Please reach out for help if you feel that you are having your own mental health issues or questions at all.

We met Curt in Key West last year during the annual Hemingway Days, and are honored to have him join us on the show today.

This is episode 8, and it’s a hot one! We are back to address some of the comments we received from our most recent blog post, “The Great Resignation”. Wow! Who knew that this topic would resonate with so many people!? Apparently, when you talk about quitting your job, people have a lot to say. We also wanted to come back on the month anniversary of our podcast, and with it being the 8th episode, we are already ahead of most podcast series! You see, there is a term called, podfading. We learned this term from Flobo Boyce. Podfading happens to about 75% of podcasts, and most podcasts don’t make it to the 8th episode, so we feel pretty excited to have made it this far. We’re on a roll! In this episode we chat about:
What is “The Great Resignation” and where the term originated from. Why are people quitting their jobs in record numbers? What are people doing when they quit their jobs? Rage quitting– people who are so fed up with their current work situation and/or conditions that they would rather take the risk of whatever comes their way after quitting, than deal with another day of working for their current employer. How do we get in that Bored Ape Yacht Club, anyway? Ok, we don’t answer that question, but we do talk about it. The responses we received from the blog- wow, you all had a lot to say. Shannon’s resignation story. If you are someone who is not so happy with what you are doing, and/or looking for resources to freelance, or pick-up a side hustle while you work towards your own Great Resignation, we put together a Free Freelance Resource Guide you can download.

In this episode we chat about:
Why not resolutions? January 17th is "Ditch your New Year’s Resolution Day” because it is the most common date people abandon their New Year’s resolution. There is a reason for that. The most important thing we have learned in the past few years though, is to not put too much pressure on ourselves. We walk through the 7 steps so that you can move into 2022 with a fresh outlook, filled with positivity. If you find yourself getting away from your goal, start again. That is the beautiful thing about this. No pressure.
We hope these steps are helpful for you as you set your intentions for the new year. With the right mindset, possibilities are awaiting to unfold.
