**Welcome to the More Than Anxiety Podcast. I’m Megan Devito, and I’m a life coach for high achievers. I help people with big dreams and big anxiety, learn to calm their bodies so they can think clearly, make brave choices, and do big things.
You’re going to get so much information about stress and anxiety here, but it doesn’t stop there.
Anxiety worms its way into the nooks and crannies of your life so let’s talk about all of it! Not just the typical stuff.**
Let’s talk about work, connecting with your kids, your partner, or reconnecting with your friends. Let's talk about the world, food, sleep, sex, vacations…because when you’re anxious, anxiety will be a part of all of your decisions, in every area of your life.
**As someone who lived with overwhelming anxiety for nearly 30 years, I know how it feels to be trapped in the cycle of fear - constantly overthinking everything with your body backing up all those scary thoughts with uncomfortable and sometimes terrifying symptoms. I know what it is like to feel stuck, and hopeless, and to frantically try all the things to fight off how you feel.
That’s in the past for me now and it can be for you too.**
**Here’s how I know.
Today…I’m on the other side… I’m living a life that I never thought was possible. I’ve gone from insane health anxiety, complete with anxiety and panic attacks, compulsive thoughts and checking, to helping people just like you and me, break free from the cycle of anxiousness. Here, I’m sharing powerful true stories of anxiety and recovery, the skills I use myself every day and that teach my clients that will challenge and inspire you to take action and create the life you’ve been dying to live, and so much more.**
And, at the end of each episode, you’ll be one step closer to knowing you are completely normal, you are safe, and you totally have what it takes to live life without anxiety calling the shots for you - all this with some humor and major A-Ha moments mixed in.
You won’t want to miss a thing so be sure to subscribe and if you like what you hear, leave a five-star review so others can find this podcast and get the help and support they want and need too. Thanks for listening.

Rick Farrant walked into a gym at 70 and walked out a competitive powerlifter. In this episode, he shares what it took: not physically, but mentally.
We talk about commitment, the fear that shows up before every competition, and why "just show up and do it" isn't as simple as it sounds.
If you've ever hesitated on a decision, talked yourself out of a risk, or let anxiety make the call, this one's for you.

What if everything you call "mental weakness" is actually a skill you never trained?
UPenn-trained mental performance coach Chris DeSantis joins Megan to dismantle the biggest lie in sports, business, and leadership: that your psychological struggles are fixed traits. Chris brings his MAPP degree and years of coaching experience to explain positive psychology, learned optimism, and why the term "head case" needs to d!e permanently.
Whether you're an executive leading under pressure, a coach trying to get the best out of your team, or someone battling performance anxiety, this conversation rewires how you think about your own mind.
Key takeaways:
— Why "your head's gonna hurt at every practice" is actually good news
— The clinical model vs. the training model: psychology got it backward
— "You are the worst coach you've ever had" — how your self-talk is sabotaging you
— Fear gets you from A to B. It does not build infrastructure.
— "Brains gonna brain" — stop fighting your wiring and start working with it
— Why every "I have to" is one rep of pessimism
— The shift from obligation to "Why wouldn't I?"
— How Chris swam a lifetime best at age 42 — and what it proves about mindset training

Everyone tells leaders to "be more confident." Nobody explains why that advice makes things worse.
Executive presence isn't a behavior you perform, it's a version of yourself you either have access to or you don't. And when you lose it in a high-stakes meeting, a big presentation, or a tough conversation, it's not a confidence problem. It's a nervous system problem.
In this episode of the Peak Performance Mindset Podcast, performance mindset coach Megan Devito breaks down what executive presence actually is (Spoiler: it has nothing to do with gravitas, the "7 C's," or power poses), why even the most qualified leaders fall apart under pressure, and the 5 specific skills that build it from the inside out.
You'll learn:
Why your nervous system hijacks your presence before you even open your mouth
The identity trap that makes high performers shrink at the worst possible moments
How to communicate with conviction, even when you don't feel it
What to actually say when your team member "lacks presence" (and what NOT to say)
How to practice under pressure before the moment that counts
Whether you're an executive, a competitive athlete, or a leader building your team, this episode will change how you think about performance under pressure.

What do you do when a truck hits you head-on, breaks your neck, and your surgeons tell you to hang up your bike for good?
If you're Sav Wilds, you get curious.
In this episode, Megan sits down with Sav, ultra endurance athlete, triathlete, AI agency co-founder, and ICF certified high performance coach, to talk about the resilience framework that carried her from a broken neck back to competing at Worlds in Spain and chasing a Guinness World Record in the fastest barefoot 50K.
This is the episode for anyone who has faced something hard and wondered if they have what it takes to keep going. You do. And Sav is the proof.

Remember! Pressure isn't the problem. Your untrained mindset is.
Do you overthink when the stakes are highest, right when you need to perform your best?
In this episode of Peak Performance Mindset, performance mindset coach Megan Devito teaches you a 3-minute mental reset to stop overthinking under pressure so you can compete, lead, and perform as your best self when it counts most.
You’ll learn the three types of overthinkers (and which one you default to), the science behind why you overthink at exactly the wrong moment, and a step-by-step reset you can use before your next high-stakes performance; whether that’s a board meeting, a race, or a game that matters.
Megan also shares a real story from her swim coaching - a freshman swimmer who changed her breath pattern mid-race at sectionals, what happened, and how she came back in her very next event after resetting her nervous system and trusting her training.
If you’re an executive who overthinks before big decisions, an athlete dealing with performance anxiety, a teen athlete who gets in your own head, or a sports parent watching your kid struggle under pressure, this episode is for you.

Is Civil Discourse the lost art of Human connection we need to restore?
Coach Megan Devito explores how to have confident communication without constant conflict. Drawing on her years as a teacher setting up student debates, Megan highlights what’s missing in conversations today: respect and the ability to disagree with the idea without discounting the person.
This episode is vital for High-Achieving Women who need practical, actionable tools to handle big feelings like anger and anxiety. Megan explains how conflict makes people feel defensive, creating a massive divide in relationships and ruin family connections. We address the digital overwhelm of seeing polarizing posts and how it affects face-to-face communication.
Learn what civil discourse is (maintaining respect and seeking mutual understanding) and what it is not (it's not agreeing or silencing your beliefs).
5 Steps to Practice Civil Discourse (Especially During the Holidays):
Spot the Signal: Recognize physical signs of anxiety or defensiveness.
Pause: Use a slow, deep breathwork exercise to bring the energy down and calm your nervous system. Remember: when your emotions are high, your thinking is low.
Get Quiet: Remind yourself that arguing doesn't make you more right; it just makes the other person more resistant to your opinion. Focus on your emotional wellness.
Find Common Ground: Shift your focus from stating your view to seeking theirs. Use active listening skills and ask questions to find shared values.
Acknowledge Their Experience: Validate that they operate based on their unique life experiences. (This is an essential communication skill for having difficult conversations and building resilience.)

In this episode, I'm sharing why slowing down is the counterintuitive secret to finishing the year strong and achieving your Q4 goals without burnout or stress.
• Most people respond to Q4 pressure by either rushing frantically or giving up completely
• When we feel anxious, our brains aren't thinking clearly, they're just recycling old patterns
• Your brain wants to be right more than it wants you to be happy or successful
• Reset your mindset by focusing on what you learned rather than judging past mistakes
• Calm your nervous system through simple practices like a five-minute walk outside
• Create a simplified strategy with one aligned, intentional step each day
• Start your reset now rather than waiting until November when deadlines loom
• Picture yourself at year-end feeling accomplished while still enjoying the holidays
• A mindset reset transforms both your professional success and personal wellbeing

You'll learn how Cathy's Ayurvedic approach offers individualized practices for managing anxiety, focusing on gentle, slow-paced movements and mindful breathing.
Practice her "60-second stress slayer" technique, using extended exhales to cue safety to your nervous system. Cathy also introduces the deeply relaxing practice of Yoga Nidra, equivalent to hours of sleep for mind and body restoration.
This episode discusses the power of connecting mind, body, and breath to release emotional and physical "gunk". If you're looking for simple, actionable tools to calm your nervous system and thrive instead of just survive, this conversation is for you.

Is social media making your anxiety worse or your child’s confidence disappear? You’re not alone.
In this episode of More Than Anxiety, I sit down with educator and mindset coach Kathy Van Benthuysen to talk about how platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat are reshaping the mental health of both kids and adults.
This conversation is necessary, applicable, and a must-listen! We discuss the growing link between screen time, comparison, perfectionism, and emotional overwhelm and offer simple, compassionate ways to shift the narrative. From affirmations that build confidence to tools for healthy tech boundaries at home, this conversation is filled with hope and practical support for anyone navigating the digital world with kids or on their own.
Whether you’re a high-achieving woman trying to break free from burnout, a parent worried about your child’s screen habits, or someone craving more presence in your life, this episode is for you.
As a mom of 20 years and former teacher of 30, Kathy Van Benthuysen knows firsthand the challenges of raising kids in today's digital world. After spending over 67,000 hours working with children in the classroom, she made a life-changing decision: she left teaching early to help parents navigate the growing crisis of digital dependency.
Now, as a speaker and co-founder of Converlation, Kathy transforms her deepunderstanding of how kids think and behave into practical solutions for parents. She doesn't just talk about screen time limits – she shows moms how to build meaningful connections with their children in a world dominated by devices.
What makes Kathy different is her ability to blend her experience as both a mom and educator. She's been in the trenches, dealing with the same struggles many parents face: the battle over phones at dinner, the impact of social media on self-esteem, and the challenge of maintaining real conversations in an increasingly virtual world.
Through her engaging presentations and practical tools, Kathy helps moms feel less alone and more equipped to raise confident, emotionally healthy kids who can thrive in our tech-driven society.

Your 40s are this weird mix of feeling like you should have life figured out, but also questioning everything. You’ve spent decades putting everyone else first, and now you're realizing... something’s missing.
In this episode, coach Megan Devito is digging into:
🌟 The strange crossroads of your 40s and why you feel both wise and totally uncertain
🌟 How perimenopause isn’t just physical, it changes how you see yourself
🌟 Why confidence doesn’t just happen with age but comes from trusting yourself
🌟 How overthinking keeps you stuck and second-guessing every move
🌟 What it actually looks like to be unapologetically YOU, making decisions without guilt, setting boundaries without stress.
If you’re ready to quiet your mind, trust yourself, and start enjoying life now, I’ve got you. You can learn more about how to work with me or get a free Boundaries and Balance Audit at www.megandevito.com

Pamela King spent 15 years teaching high school history before making the leap into entrepreneurship as a “small business optimizer,” helping business owners streamline their systems so they can focus on the work that really matters. Her story is proof that big career changes are possible—even when fear, doubt, and well-meaning advice try to hold you back.
Here’s what her journey teaches us:
✨ Your skills are more transferable than you think – Everything you’ve mastered in one career can serve you in another.
✨ Other people’s anxiety isn’t yours to carry – Pay attention to when their fears are shaping your decisions.
✨ A "full body yes" is worth listening to – Sometimes your gut knows what your brain is second-guessing.
✨ A solid exit plan takes time – Big transitions aren’t usually overnight; they require patience and strategy.
✨ Small steps ease the fear – Start networking, document your skills, and explore what’s next at your own pace.
✨ Entrepreneurship is all about uncertainty – Growth comes from learning new skills and embracing the unknown.
✨ Privilege plays a role in career shifts – Being honest about your circumstances helps you plan realistically.
✨ You don’t have to do this alone – Finding support from others on a similar path makes all the difference.
If you’re ready to stop overthinking and start actually enjoying your life, join Ambitious Overthinkers Anonymous, my monthly coaching community—or let’s talk about one-on-one coaching for more personalized support. You don’t have to figure it all out alone!

This episode is totally different than any episode I've done before. This week, I'm having a coaching conversation with Erin Washington, host of the ThErinpy with Erin Washington podcast. This is the first conversation I've ever had with Erin: no goal setting, no background to coach from, just 3,2,1, GO!
We dive into Erin's journey in building resilience and self-worth while also digging into her past struggles with body image, bulimia and anorexia. From being a D1 soccer player to a successful philanthropist, mom, and podcaster, Erin opens up about her need for external validation and measuring self-worth in how much she checks off her to-do list.
Discover how Erin's experiences led her to empower teenage girls to have body positivity through the Blue Butterfly Foundation, offering hope and healing to those who need it most.
Erin and I go deep into the emotional impact of seeking approval from others, talking about the pressure and expectations of being the oldest daughter, and ask and answering tough questions about her value outside of what she is doing.
This conversation offers tons of valuable insights into embracing who you are beyond your accomplishments and gives you a quick snapshot of what a coaching session might look like for you.

In this episode, Dr. Cheryl Arutt joins me to discuss the deep connection between anxiety and unresolved trauma. She shares insights into how past experiences can manifest as ongoing anxiety, creating a cycle of stress and avoidance. Dr. Arutt challenges the belief that simply managing anxiety is enough, emphasizing the importance of understanding the body's role in this struggle and sharing hope through EMDR for a life that isn't consumed by constant anxiety and vigilance.
A key focus of the episode is on EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy. Dr. Arutt explains how this theraputic approach can help rewire the brain, allowing individuals to process traumatic memories and break free from the grip of anxiety without the need for traditional methods like exposure therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

We’ll explore how habitual thoughts and behaviors carve lasting neural pathways in our brains, akin to sledding down the same hill over and over. By intentionally redirecting our thoughts and actions—whether it’s picking up a new hobby, shifting our focus from negative to positive, or even overcoming sensory loss—we can create new, beneficial pathways. I’ll share practical strategies to train your brain to respond differently to anxiety, including the importance of handwritten notes to reinforce positive thinking.
Finally, we’ll tackle the common pitfalls of anxiety, such as catastrophizing and all-or-nothing thinking, and how these habits keep us trapped in a cycle of stress. Drawing inspiration from Jen Sincero’s book "You Are a Badass," we’ll discuss how to shift your mental focus towards positive outcomes without falling into the trap of toxic positivity. Join our community, engage with these insights, and explore personal coaching opportunities to enhance your mental well-being journey.

In this episode I'm talking about one of my favorite tools I use to help the people I coach lower anxiety and stress and grow their confidence. You'll learn how to use guided imagery and/or future pacing , what it is, and why it works.
Be sure to stay until the end or pause and come back when you're in a place where you can relax and feel comfortable. I'm taking you through a quick relaxation imagery session so you can destress and feel great anytime you listen.
Combining future pacing with coaching helps my clients get the results they came for faster without having to dig into the past or fearing the future. To talk to me about how you can work with me as your coach, CLICK HERE.

Join me in Episode 89 as I talk about how you're sabotaging your career, your growth, and giving up on your dreams when you let anxiety make your decisions for you.
I'm sharing how you can use the feeling of anxiety in your body to check and challenge your thoughts,
find evidence that you're already succeeding,
and take steps forward even and especially when you feel anxious - on purpose.
You want to grow and expand - to get the promotion, to build your business, to have time for more fun but it feels scary.
**You keep doing side projects that feel productive but when it comes to promoting yourself, you hold back. You work but you don’t make changes because they make you feel anxious - again based on what you think you’re capable of or what other people will think of you.
You have to learn to feel anxious and not believe what you think. You have to learn to choose the things that feel uncomfortable and believe in yourself before anyone else will believe in you - even if you have the cutest cupcakes on the planet - yes, you’ll sell some but you won’t grow and eventually you’ll fade away only because you aren’t truly believing in yourself.**
You use your problems and anxiety as a notification and motivation instead of rolling around in feeling defeated, angry, or small - which are okay to feel but not a place you want to or can stay in for long if you truly want to grow and expand personally or in your career.

I recently saw thread by @shanila.sattar who said, “Unpopular healer reality is that many folks get addicted to healing (aka always finding something to fix, improve, change) Although self-inquiry is amazing , a constant state of “not good enoughness” is really a trap"
And it got me thinking.
Last year I was in a cycle of trying to fix myself - not just the 2023 version of me, but past me as well, all in an effort to feel less anxious, incapable, or not good enough.
Episode 84 is about how constantly trying to "fix" yourself, to change your life, and to be more and have more is not only killing your confidence but it's keeping you anxious.

Whatever you tell yourself, especially when you start with the words, 'I am' becomes your truth.
When you say things like,
"I'm always anxious"
"I'm so bad at ____."
"I'm worthless"
even when you don’t want to believe them, and even when you have evidence that it’s not true,
your brain believes it.
And it will ignore the proof you have
that you're good at something,
the smiles and compliments you get from others,
or notice when you feel good.
But when actively decide to look, with intention for what's going well, what you want to see, and call yourself out for saying things that are untrue or unkind,
Your brain starts to change.

I should cut off my fingers right now.
Me chopping vegetables.
Your brain comes up with around 60,000 thoughts a day.
99% of them are untrue and thought out of habit.
When you have a thought that has an emotion attached to it,
it grabs your attention.
Especially when it is dark, or scary.
These are called intrusive thoughts and they will freak you out if you give them too much attention.
😱 You'll think you're going crazy,
😱 Dangerous to yourself and other people,
😱 Wonder if you're having premonitions,
😱 And get more worked up and afraid, thinking the same thought over and over again.
You can hear more about intrusive thoughts and how to handle them in this week's episode of the More Than Anxiety podcast.

A recent article by Fast Company, stated “Eighty-three percent of women who have been working remotely since or any time after the pandemic began, want to continue to work remotely. Sixty-nine percent of those women want to be full-time remote, while 20% are interested in a combination of remote and in-person work. That is a substantial number of women who are trying to balance and advance their careers while also providing for their families.
In Episode 76, I'm discussing the pros and con's of working remotely, working fully in person, and working in a hybrid situation and how the key to your success starts with taking care of your mental health.

Last week I finally had some new pictures taken to use on my website and in my social media posts. I had been wanting to do this for a long time but always found an excuse not to get the pictures done. I'm so glad I went but let me tell you, I was nervous!
I did the full spectrum of anxious thinking.
I overthought what to wear and how to be, shopping, Googling and changing clothes for hours.
I kept wondering what I looked like or what other people would think.
I criticized myself because I don't look 17 anymore and pictured my face looking like Quasimodo.
And made myself more awkward by shaming myself for not knowing how to pose or where the heck to put my arms.
All of that worrying and I love my new photos and had so much fun!
In this episode, I'm showing how jumping into something as simple as a photo shoot can bring up all the anxious feelings and reactions, have you repeating negative things you say or think about yourself, and how you can let go and HAVE FUN, even when you feel awkward and uncomfortable.
And, when you pay attention to how you handle the little things that make you feel anxious, you have a better handle on how to deal with the bigger situations that cause bigger anxiety because you handle them the same way.

How often do you grab your phone in a day? 10 times? 100 times? 500? Do you even notice when you reach for it anymore? In episode 74, I'm sharing a personal ride through my own dopamine addiction and the hard truths about our mental health in a world full of cheap dopamine hits.
With insights from Dr. Anna Lembke's book "Dopamine Nation," I'm talking about how we use technology, junk food, romance novels, etc to avoid feeling uncomfortable and negative emotions and how avoiding the hard stuff makes the good stuff.... well, less good.
Breaking your addiction and adding in healthy ways to feel good so you start to love the little things in life again and feel a full range of emotions is simple when you have help

Episode 60 dives into the problem of thinking you need more information to feel 100% certain and safe. Researching, Googling, and learning more feels productive and important but when you're using what you learn against yourself instead of using it to make decisions and move forward, you wind up feeling worse. I'll also talk about how learning to trust yourself and your body is the best way to less anxious and more confident and how you can get started working with me as your coach.

Episode 59 came from a conversation I had on a consultation call last week. The person I was talking to mentioned that she felt like she was annoying other people by being anxious and it really hit home for me, because I know I remember feeling the same way and it has come up with other people that I've talked to as well. When you're anxious, and you're all up in your head about what people think about you, whether it's that you're asking for reassurance, or even if you think they might be judging you for feeling anxious, it has this way of adding a layer of shame over an already miserable feeling. So this week, I'm going to talk about how anxiety can affect your relationships with other people, how you feel when you're doing your best to hold it together, then feel more anxious because of what you think other people think about you being anxious, and about how I can help you not only feel less anxious, but how you can feel secure in your relationships, even when anxiety sneaks in

In Episode 53 I'm talking about perfectionism.
We all want to do well but sometimes get caught in the perfectionism trap.
Trying to be the perfect partner, the perfect mom, or perfect at your job can make you feel stressed, anxious, and stuck.
If you notice you often doubt yourself,
worry about failing,
and never feel like you're "good enough,”
You're not alone.
Perfectionism can sneak in with the best intentions.
It may seem like you're just aiming for success,
but it can stop you from reaching your goals.
Try this with me.
👉 Imagine doing life without feeling like you must always be perfect.
👉 Picture yourself achieving your goals with confidence, taking risks, and having fun doing it.
When you let go of perfectionism, you'll:
🌟 Feel Less Stressed: You won't always have to meet impossible standards. You get to relax and enjoy progress.
🌟 Boost Your Confidence: You'll feel better about yourself, knowing you don't have to be flawless because flawless doesn’t exist.
🌟 Take More Action: You'll have the guts to chase your goals and try new things.
🌟 Have Better Relationships: You'll connect with others as your authentic self, without pretending to be perfect.
Check out Episode 53 then schedule a consultation call.
We'll figure out how perfectionism affects you, what you'd like to change, and how you can start living a life you love to live.

So you think more.
And feel more.
Until you nearly (or actually) panic.

It only FEELS true because of what you think about how you feel.

Anxiety is a feeling in your body.
When you get caught up in how you feel, your brain is going to try to come up with reasons why.
It’s your brain’s job to keep you alive and safe so the first thing it does is react by making sure you’re pumped full of hormones so you can escape, fight off whatever the danger is, or hide.
The next thing it does, and it doesn’t do it well or truthfully, is start problem solving.
It tries to figure out what the problem is and it does this by asking WHAT IF.

Laying in bed,
Sitting on the toilet,
While you're trying to focus on work or your kids,
Anxious thoughts are loud and relentless!
They feel true and dangerous.
What's even harder is when your anxiety is high,
your ability to think is low.
Anxious brains are not rational thinking brains,
they are reactive, lying brains.
Here's why:
When you feel anxious, your brain tries to figure out why by coming up with explanations for how your body feels. It makes up stories.
The stories scare you and give you a little more adrenaline and cortisol and your body feels more anxious.
Your brain comes up with more thoughts about why you feel anxious...
The reason you can't stop stop thinking is because of how you feel.

All humans feel anxious from time to time and it is only how we think about how we feel that keeps us from having normal everyday anxious thoughts versus living feeling stressed out, self-conscious, and anxious.

Episode 23 will explain the difference between normal anxiety, high functioning anxiety, and disordered anxiety and show you how coaching or coaching + therapy can help you change your thoughts so you can feel calm, confident, and capable.
