Brett Elliott Crozier is a retired captain in the United States Navy. A US Naval Academy graduate, he became a naval aviator, first flying helicopters and then switching to fighters. After completing naval nuclear training, he served as an officer on several aircraft carriers. In the spring of 2020, he was the commanding officer of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt when COVID-19 broke out among the crew. He was relieved of command after sending a letter to Navy leaders asking that most of the crew be taken ashore which was subsequently leaked to the press. Crozier retired from the Navy in March 2022. He now lives in San Diego and works with veteran nonprofits, where he continues to serve those who have served.

Asymptomatic, HCM most often kills without warning. Both extremely athletic, they were immediately put on medications and made life-style changes. Abbigail Wade, has a genetic condition called Dystonia Type 11. What started as a small tremor in Abby's hand when she was 3 years old, took 7 years of testing, MRIs, EEGs and bloodwork to get a diagnosis. Dystonia Type 11 is a progressive condition that causes Abby's muscles to cramp along with twitching and jerking. Only 20 years old, she has difficulty walking and must rest often no matter the activity. Having been through so much trauma in her life, living every day in pain, Abby continued to search for a solution and found it. Deep down, hope was not lost, it was found with Deep Brain Stimulation. She bravely chose brain surgery in hopes for a new beginning.

When he was 34, Alex thought he had the ‘man flu’ but collapsed and was rushed to the hospital where he was given just hours to live and a 3% chance of survival. He had contracted Strep A followed by Septicemia which led to him having all four limbs amputated. As well as losing his limbs, Alex also lost his lips and nose. She has never known life without being disabled. In 2021, on The International Day of People with Disabilities, Celia launched The Disability Policy Centre. Disabled-led and dedicated to the advancement and development of policy, they work to ensure that accessibility is at the heart of conversation, consultation, and legislation. In 1999, as a professional motocross athlete, Aaron Baker sustained a career ending spinal cord injury. He fractured cervical vertebrae 4,5, and 6 rendering him a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chin down. He was given a “one in a million” chance of ever feeding himself again. In my recovery from my accident, I have come across a phase of “learned helplessness”. This was new to me, but it is a very insidious thought process. The example I was given to explain it was this: imagine you are on a sailing boat in the middle of the ocean. You spot a storm approaching. You decide to ready the boat for the storm so you take down and secure the sails, baton down the hatches and prepare to ride out the storm inside the boat.
When the storm is passed, you emerge from the boat and ready it for the continuing journey. You hoist the sails, repair any damage and set a direction. So far so good. Learned helplessness occurs when, even after the storm has passed and the fine weather has returned, you lose the will to raise the sails and do any repairs. Your thinking is: “What’s the point? The next storm is going to do just the same. I can’t outrun it or do anything to avoid it.” The boat remains in its locked down form, just drifting with no direction. Any damage is not fixed and gets worse with each storm. Learned Helplessness is not “being able to do anything to affect the outcome.” It doesn’t have to be in all parts of your life, it can occur only in certain areas and affect you just as much. My storm cloud, which I am emerging from as I write this to you, is chronic pain.

I remember the days when I was a college admission counselor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Every day my cup was being filled with the vibrancy and energy of college students. They were the bloodline of our work, walking around on campus with a something that I couldn’t articulate then. It was like they had a sense of urgency, and I wondered why their walking pace was a little quicker than mine. I felt like the luckiest person on earth to have landed in a profession that filled me with joy.
Two decades in higher education created shifts in my positions, places and people. Yet, I never left college admissions, I just changed desks. There were rough times when I questioned if I enjoyed my role as a college counselor, witnessing educational policies that distanced students from their educational purpose, let alone becoming lifelong learners. And yet, I stayed. My roots as an educator are so thick and intertwined with the mission of The DH Effect, a company I cofounded with my partner Hilary Bilbrey, which is to create trust and belonging worldwide, from the students and families we serve to companies and organizations we create educational experiences for. To put it simply, I remained hopeful.

If you are worried about something, write it out.
Cross off the things you can't control, and deal with what is in your court.

Angel felt a tapping on his shoulder as he was trying to navigate the foot traffic of over 4,000 high schoolers trying to get to their classes. Every morning, Angel had the same routine - wait in line, pass the metal detectors, and fight the crowds to be on time for first period. He looked over. It wasn’t his assigned school counselor but he recognized the person. Another school counselor. Interesting.
“Have you ever thought about going to college?”
The term college wasn’t something that Angel resonated with, although it was a familiar concept because he grew up watching The Cosby Show. Instantly he thought, only those kids of color attend college. Not me.
And there it happened. The first pebble to be dropped that would create the change agent who would nurture its ripple effect...

There are some good news: If someone hates - or hate’s watered down version “dislikes” - something, then there is still hope. As long as the person can still feel, light still exists. This is why awareness is such an important concept in fighting hate. With the light of awareness comes knowledge. With knowledge comes informed choices and understanding. With choices and understanding comes the potential for change.

When I was 25 years old, I read a book that would change the course of my life along with millions of others around the world - “A Conversation with God” by world famous and controversial author Neale Donald Walsch. On Thursday, April 19th at 10:00am, first shift students were leaving to start their weekend and second shift students were arriving at the Abdul Rahim High School and the same was occurring at the Mumtaz Educational Center. Both schools are in Kabul, Afghanistan and are attended primarily by Hazara families who are an ethnic or tribal minority in Afghanistan. It’s a very busy time of day with a maximum number of students and parents and teachers moving around – just like mornings and afternoons at American schools. It is also the time that the Taliban, who are violent religious extremists hold the country hostage, chose to set off bombs outside the school to inflict the maximum number of casualties. Initial reports indicated as many as 500 students, teachers, parents, and local civilians were killed. However, news agencies are forbidden by the Taliban, and the internet is restricted. This story has not been reported and no one is AWARE – until now.

This is one of the most iconic and historic photographs I have ever seen. The emotion conveyed in the body language is overwhelming, if one understands the context behind it. It’s August 15, 2021 in Kabul, Afghanistan. It’s 1:03pm and the country of Afghanistan has collapsed. The Taliban have taken the capital of Kabul and are advancing through all residential areas. Hours before, President Ghani and other high ranking politicians had fled the country with over a $167 million in cash and cars in a procession of helicopters. This is the squadron room of the A29 fighter pilots. They are, to coin an American phrase, the “best of the best” and spent years in the United States training to achieve those levels of proficiency and professionalism. At the time this photograph was taken, many pilots had taken their aircraft to adjacent countries to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Taliban. This is the last of the pilots, in their flight suits prepared to fly missions, but there is no country. The internet is down. The chain of command is broken, and communications have ceased. The airport tower and runways are controlled by Taliban. It is the end, and there is no where to go.
With us today are three of the Afghan Air Force A29 pilots in this photograph who managed to escape and are now in the United States. I wish to welcome Lieutenant Colonel Azizi, First Lieutenant Sahak, and First Lieutenant Ahadi.

As the Taliban closed in on Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, in mid-August 2021, the withdrawing American forces retreated to the Hamid Karzai International Airport - an indefensible position in the middle of a civilian population. For two weeks, American and NATO forces evacuated Afghans who were able to make it into the gates. Many of those who were able to get on planes happened to be in the right place at the right time. Others were able to get on planes as a result of coordinated efforts which prioritized categories of individuals such as social media influencers, musicians, and youth sports teams. Many were left behind worked side by side or shoulder to shoulder as the expression goes with American forces and now face persecution, torture, and death at the hands of the Taliban.
One unique group is highly educated and trained Afghan military who trained extensively in the United States at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kansas. These are men who underwent an extreme security investigation and selection process to live and train on U.S. military bases, including the Pentagon, and travel freely through the United States. They were “vetted” so to speak and granted American visas. Today, we have two of these U.S. Army Command and General Staff College graduates on the phone from deep inside Afghanistan where they hide from the Taliban and cannot go outside for fear of being recognized. Many of their friends have been killed; many more have disappeared. Both have the rank of Colonel or higher. We have changed their names for their protection. Welcome Hamid and Ajmal.

Brought to the United States to receive education and training on maintaining A-29 fighter jets in October 2014, this group of Afghan men worked side by side with U.S. forces in order to return to Afghanistan prepared to protect their country from oppression. In August 2021, when the Taliban took control of Kabul, all promises made were suddenly forgotten. “Mama, why are there so many white crosses over there?”Zoned out during my commute on the 405 freeway, I have passed the Los Angeles National Cemetery a hundred times. From the freeway, if one was really paying attention to their surroundings, you would have seen what my fourth grader saw – roughly 90,000 war graves on 114 acres of land, a resting place to service members dating back to the Civil War.
When I shared this with my daughter, she took matters into her own hands. After writing to all the Veteran hospitals and medical centers in California thanking patients for their service, she received a letter. It was a full page and came with five photos of a beautiful two-acre garden signed by the Patient Garden Manager and Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist of the Tibor Rubin Medical Veterans Affairs Hospital in Long Beach. His name is Scot Moon.

I didn’t speak at all until I was almost four years old. Before that my parents made sure I could communicate by learning to sign key words so I could request the things I wanted, and later I used picture cards to string together short sentences. I don’t remember this, but I’ve seen the home movies. I had choices based on the words I knew and the cards that were printed, but I had to work within those limits to communicate. When I started speaking, I started to read at the same time. I could speak words, but my ability to converse was almost non-existent. I could respond or request things but I had to be prompted with what my mom called “scripts.”

The prophetic boy walked along the beach, wreathed in thought, so much so that he almost missed the dark form sprawled on the sand. It was a young pilot whale, breathing heavily.
“Don’t panic, my brother, “ the boy said.
“I’ll run back to the village and return with enough people to push you back into the water.”
“No.” a voice sounded in the boy’s head. “No, let me stay here.”
“But surely you will die.”
“I am sacrificing myself,” the whale said.
“Why?” asked the shaman.
“My people are dying,” said the whale.
“Our only salvation lies in becoming land animals again. Each time the dolphins and we beach ourselves, we get a little farther inland. I’ve gone past where my father got and he outdistanced his own father. Eventually we will walk upon the Earth once more.”
The boy pondered this. He dug into his medicine pouch, extracted a few leaves and chewed them. Soon he was flying through the spirit world in search of the Master of Swimming Things, whom he found in a watery grotto.
The boy explained the plight of the whales and dolphins. The Master listened intently, then began speaking. In an instant the traveling youth found himself back in his body on the beach.
“It will take far too many generations for you to become land animals again,” he told the pilot whale.
“The seas are growing poisonous quickly.”
The whale moaned.
“But,” the boy continued, “the Master of Swimming Things says if your people can’t come upon the land, he will send the sea to take its place. One day whales and dolphins will glide through submerged cities and other works of men. You will tell new stories and sing new songs of happiness.”
“But what will happen to you?” the whale asked.
“We will either grow wise or cease.”
The whale pondered the words of the far-seeing youth.
“Perhaps I’ll take you up on your offer to return me to my home then.”
The boy used the hem of his garment to wipe away the animal’s huge tear and ran off to summon his people.

Air Force Major ‘Annie’ (as we’ll refer to her), who was born in Afghanistan, came to the U.S. as a teenager to get an education. She enlisted in the Air Force in 1985 and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. On September 11, 2001, Major Annie was the only Airman in the Air Force to understand Pashto (the same language spoken by the insurgent group known as the Taliban) and was immediately deployed as an Aircrew Linguist. After two deployments, she was assigned to the National Security Agency for four years. In recognition for her work in a global war on terror, a bronze statue of has been erected in the Veterans Park on Okaloosa Island. While retired, she still works to serve (and save) others.

Hilary thought she overcame the most traumatic time in her life after she was told to plan her own funeral while pregnant with her second child. The stress caused while planning for her death, triggered premature labor. She gave birth to her preemie, and after a week in the hospital, the scare was over. Arriving to her brand-new home, fully baby-proof (they thought), Hilary was ready to return to her family of four, proudly wearing her badge of honor - Mama.
On April 6, 2003, Hilary went for a short walk with a friend. Her husband, 18-month-old son and preemie were at home while she was enjoying the fresh air, a good conversation, and movement. At home, while her husband was changing the preemie, her 18-month-old managed to quickly get into the master bathtub and turn on the hot water. He suffered severe third-degree burns. It was surreal. They trusted that the plumbing company set the water temperature gauge to “kid-safe”. They thought they did all the right things to protect their children.

She was also berated for wearing make-up and refusing to wear a hijab. Mehr, who is in her final year of a law degree, says, “Everything has changed and for the worse. When we were created, we started life as a full Pencil; eager to write out our story on life's page and leave our mark upon the world and all of those in it. We are all unique with different colours, shades and strengths. The origins of a Pencil come from nature. The wood of a tree, which itself was once a seed. Lead from the earth, as a raw mix of minerals and metals. The lead in the Pencil is then enclosed by a layer of wood and given a polished final finish. This covering serves as our outside interface between the inside and outside worlds. What the world doesn’t see, beneath the protective cover, is the invisible core: our creativity and magic. This magic inside can only be shown to the outside world through our actions and acts on the paper of life. It is not the wood that creates the story but what lies beneath the wood.

The beach and the ocean have been playing a special and integral part of my life for the past few years, but even more so recently. We live under this presumption that home is a physical place. But home embodies so much more than that. It can be a space in our mind, a person who accepts us, a foundation that we build in ourselves and others through our character. With one in three women experiencing violence globally, an unknown number of male victims of assault and sexual abuse (although likely more than 1 in 6), and countless LGBTQ+ victims of trauma, many of us have had our sense of security rocked and stolen. Here’s the good news. We can get it back. We can create it internally and choose to live there instead of in the chaos that our suffering and social pressures choose to enmesh us in. Particularly for survivors of intimate partner violence, domestic violence and child abuse, having this space is vital. Your home can be unshakeable. Because the strength you have and show just by being here is capable of accomplishing that.

“I will always remember the day I held my son in my arms for the first time. Unlike most women I was not in a delivery room at a hospital or at home. I had not spent nine months nurturing and caring for my unborn child while it grew in my body. Instead, I learned I had become a mother from a phone call. Just days later my husband and I took a short drive to meet our first child. An 11-week-old baby boy that had been chosen for us not by us. We signed the adoption papers sight unseen, promising to make him part of our family forever. In 2012, his now famous letter written to Nike, was opened, read and responded to - not only with acknowledgement but with action. Matthew wrote with a request for shoes he could put on by himself. Matthew has Cerebral Palsy. Now, as a result of his letter, he also has a pair of shoes he can put on with no assistance required.

While scrolling through my feed on LinkedIn the other day, I came across a post that stopped me mid-scroll. It was from Dan Price, the Founder and CEO of Gravity Payments: “We laid off 0 people despite losing half our revenue. Our employees responded with voluntary pay cuts and record sales. We repaid all the pay cuts and are now giving out small raises and are financially healthy. CEOs like me don't get you out of a crisis. Employees do. Trust them.” I had the great pleasure of having a candid, honest conversation with Dan that made me pause to evaluate ‘normal’ when it comes to leadership.

My year began, on January 9th to be exact, with being terminated from my job. My dream job no less. Not because of workforce reduction. Not because of my performance. Not because of anything I had failed to do. But rather, because of what I DID do—which was to follow our company’s policy and report sexual harassment. And for doing the right thing, I received the ultimate wrong. Retaliation which culminated in the loss of my job. At the beginning of the pandemic, when there was not a job to be found. I spent days that stretched into weeks mired in self-despair. My identity was gone. I was no longer the Chief Marketing Officer of United Way, the world’s largest non-profit, but just Lisa Bowman, ordinary citizen.
