Derek Rowe: Creative Director of Quality Communications International

A podcast that explores the same holistic communication point in a new way each episode. What's the point? Real-time communication is way trickier than we often give it credit for. We only have a few moments to find a great way to get our message across, and for every effective approach, there are many more that may not work so well for the other person! In other words......once you click send, or let the words fly out of your mouth, there are no takebacks! But don't stress, there's a bunch of stuff you can work on!

Not all of us seek feedback often enough. The thing is, others can see us in a way we simply can't. Maybe someone is holding the secret to your success and is just waiting for you to approach them for it!

Welcome to NO TAKEBACKS, a podcast hosted by holistic communication expert and trainer, Derek Rowe.

A customer situation is really only 'difficult' until we learn to handle it with effective communication. This episode, and the next (interview with service expert Monique Richardson) looks at how to make that happen. Just to be clear, we're not talking about overtly aggressive, threatening customers - that's a different subject for a different ep. We're looking at those customers who are currently agitated about something, but who still have the opportunity to settle down if we know what to do and say in that moment!

This second bite at the sales cherry (see Ep 3 for bite #1) involves a great discussion with AIM facilitation guru, Paul Harrison. What a nice guy and what an amazing back-story! A perspective like his makes you realise that even with a really targeted communication area such as selling, it's still relationship/conversation first, and situation second. Join me on a fascinating journey into Paul's take on selling, empathy, connection, the importance of wearing a nice suit, and so much more.

This is NO TAKEBACKS, a podcast hosted by holistic communication thought leader and workplace trainer, Derek Rowe.

Transactional sales conversations are seen by some as the poor cousin to ongoing customer relationship-building, but why? Why can't both be great? I often find that, whether I'm talking to an ongoing customer or not, the actual sales conversation (which is usually just one aspect of a larger interaction) is pretty much the same anyway!

Whatever you make of selling, LTE is a great model to use a a launch pad to connected, authentic customer interactions!

In this episode, Derek speaks with engaging and wise Capability Coach  Lindee Conway about how she conducts change conversations. We talk about a bunch of other things as well!

Key points:

  • Be aligned with your organisation as well as your team
  • Your enthusiasm for a change may be less compelling than a structured, 2-way approach
  • Be open-minded and inclusive with your communication, all the way through a period of change

Change conversations can be tricky, for a multiplicity of reasons. Our solution? Enter each one with an open mind, a desire to connect with the other person, and above all, reasonable expectations around the outcome. A great change conversation often leaves both parties with something new to think about!

Key points:

  • Ask more question to build connection and rapport before you talk about a change
  • Don't change people's minds; just open up a dialogue and leave them with things to think about. Empower, rather than control.
  • Just before you explain or suggest a change, soften your style by putting the word Teach in your head
