Before the national lockdown Liz was the manager of a 46-place private day nursery, which was part of a small family owned chain of 3 Early Years settings based in Birmingham. With children on roll who were predominantly of Black African-Caribbean heritage, Liz ensured that as it was rooted in a community that she is a part of it would be more than a place to drop children off. Liz knew that along with her various teams over the years they had a greater set of responsibilities to the children and families than to operate as just a nursery. With an acute awareness of the wider impact of systemic racism within society, the nursery evolved into a community-based hub providing authentic and culturally compatible support for hundreds of children and families. Liz prided herself on developing multiple teams of extremely committed professionals who had developed specific pedagogy under her tutelage and leadership, providing care within an anti-racist framework. The 4 E’s of the anti-racist framework are something that she believes all Early Years environments should foster :
Embrace all children’s racial, cultural and religious backgrounds.
Embed a culture of belonging and value amongst practitioners and children.
Ensure that practice is culturally sensitive and that the child is positioned as the expert of their own identity.
Extend learning opportunities for the child by showing interest, expanding conversations and using diverse resources.
Liz is also a qualified secondary school teacher who taught Childcare, Health & Social Care and Drama in a girls’ school where the Black African-Caribbean and South Asian heritage student populations were over-represented. This was particularly poignant as the teaching and pastoral staff were not. Liz’s presence made a difference to the pupils. She was recognised as an Outstanding teacher when she qualified and gained excellent results for pupil engagement and raising aspirations, as she brought her unique industry knowledge and personal dynamic approach to education for students. In turn, she helped develop some of the best practitioners for the Early Years sector and most dedicated young women who went on to pursue their dreams.
Liz has also taught and lectured on the outcomes of Black children and young people and holds a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Studies. With her academic and professional background, Liz has become a recognised contributor and commentator on anti-racist practice in the Early Years sector. Liz also shares her knowledge with parents, caregivers and educators as The Black Nursery Manager on her social media platforms.

Carrie Grant MBE is a BAFTA award-winning broadcaster with a TV and music career spanning 40 years. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate and an MBE in 2020 for her services to Music, Media & Charity. Carrie presents for The One Show and has the biggest selling vocal coaching book in the world. She also moderates Health Conferences throughout the world and has been President of Unite Union for Community Practitioners and Health Visitors and Patient Lead for The College of Medicine. Carrie is a Crohn’s Patient and Ambassador for Crohn’s & Colitis UK as well as being ambassador for The Diana Award, The National Autistic Society and Adoption UK. Carrie is Mum to four children with special needs, one of whom was adopted. Carrie and David run a support group for over 150 families.
Tanya is a Senior Lecturer in Early Years at the University of Northampton. She has previously managed and led her own “outstanding” day nursery and out of school club. The nursery setting was fortunate enough to have a forest school as part of its ethos and Tanya became very interested in the impact that this environment had on children’s speech and language development. She therefore is lucky enough to have the practice wisdom that she is able to apply to the academic studies and her PhD researched the impact that different learning and play environments have on young children’s speech and language development. She is also particularly interested in the student experience for those studying Early Childhood Studies and researches aspects with the aim to enhance this experience and produce professionals who will be excellent advocates for children and their families.

Hello! Sarah Hutchins here, I currently teach part time in Early Years within a Primary School and I’m a magpie for all things colourful and bright! Including anything that can be repurposed, upcycled and used to enhance play. I’ve spent the past twenty years immersing myself in child centred learning experiences and perfecting the art of making mud pies and singing spontaneously throughout the day! I’ve previously taught in and led settings in both the independent and state sector here in the UK. I am also fortunate to have spent 5 years teaching in Early Years in New Zealand during the early to mid 2000s. This experience was a total game changer and a ‘light-bulb’ moment for me and it has very much shaped and influenced the practitioner that I am today. In June 2020 I created an infographic poster: ‘An Early Years Journey’ to help share and explore the infinite possibilities surrounding the magical connections that children make in their learning and play. In my spare time I am a referee of two children, I love to paint and I also film lively and entertaining phonics and stories videos from my magical garden shed.

Kelly has worked in the early years for more than 22 years.
For more than a decade she was the Quality Manager at a large chain of private nurseries, overseeing standards of provision across the settings. She secured and maintained numerous outstanding OFSTED judgements across the chain over many years.
Kelly is a passionate level 3 Forest School Practitioner, as well as a Level 3 Tutor in teaching and training adults. She is a Relax Kids coach, offering mindful sessions to children in her local area.
Kelly has knowledge across the whole early years sphere, and specialises in Mindfulness and Mental Health, Outdoors and Forest School, and her exceptional knowledge of OFSTED and current best practice.

Natalie Reeves Billing is a Liverpool lass with a spooky sense of humour. She loves to write fantastical stories for young audiences, and dabbles in poetry. Natalie spent most of her early career in the music industry as a performer and songwriter. This inevitably lead to storytelling. Natalie is a fellow of the School of Social Entrepreneurs and a student of The Golden Egg Academy. She is mentored under the Lloyds Bank SSE program, with her literacy projects, and by Liverpool Editing Company, for her upcoming YA novels. She is published in several anthologies with her poetry and short stories, including Writing on the Wall and 8N Publishing USA, with its Winter Chills collection. She is currently developing a children’s animated series with her scriptwriting partner, and delivering creative workshops throughout Merseyside. Carolyn Silberfeld is Chair/Director of the Early Childhood Studies Degrees Network (ECSDN). She has spent 26 years developing and leading Early Childhood Studies degrees, contributing to all aspects of their development. The ECSDN promotes and advocates education and research for the continuing development of a highly qualified early childhood graduate profession and workforce; and provides critical perspectives on, and a forum for, the advancement of appropriate early childhood policies, initiatives, and legislation. The ECSDN has been at the forefront for the development of quality within ECS degrees, with the development of QAA Early Childhood Studies Benchmark Statements and the Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies at Level 6. Carolyn has participated in all developments within the ECSDN and has been a member of all working groups in different Executive Committee roles. She has a professional background in health (children’s nursing, midwifery, health visiting), social sciences (BSc), Education (MEd, Cambridge) and Practitioner Research (MEd, Institute of Education) and has worked in many different settings, cultures, and contexts. This has all contributed to her pedagogic approach which views childhood as being contextual and holistic. Carolyn has taught in HE since 1988 and her research interests include reflective learning in higher education; the influence of studying abroad; national and international child health and wellbeing; and the impact of the EYFS on professional practice and the subsequent effects on children’s learning and development.

About Sue Sue is an Independent Early Years Consultant, Trainer & Author and formed Early Years Out of the Box in 2015 after a long career in Early Years. Sue’s expertise and passion for teaching and learning in the Early Years started with her classroom experience and Senior Lead role as Early Years Co-ordinator in the late 1980’s. Moving into research Sue gained an MA followed by a Doctorate, both in Early Years Education from Sheffield University.
These achievements enabled Sue to consolidate her thinking and practice; she realised that the work she was doing had a solid grounding in research. This research base informs the articles she writes regularly for Early Years Educator magazine and she is now the Consultant Editor. Maureen started work in Southampton, where she taught for over 22 years in four nursery and Infant schools, 15 of which were in leadership roles. Maureen subsequently worked for Action for Children as a project leader for Cornwall Children’s Fund, developing new and innovative services in Cornwall to improve children’s engagement in school. Following this Maureen worked as a Regional Lead for Cornwall LA children’s services, where she was responsible for leading a multiagency team in family services and developed six Children’s centres in South East Cornwall. Alongside her independent consultancy business Maureen is currently the Early Years Lead for Achievement for All where she is responsible for the design and the delivery of their award-winning early years programme; “Achieving Early” and leads on all the early years work for the charity. Maureen writes articles for National publications including – Nursery World, Home Childcarer, Every Child Journal and PACEY and is currently writing a book on early years practice due for publication late 2020. Maureen holds a B. ED in Nursey / Infant education, a Master’s degree in Education Management, the NPQH and the National Award for Special Educational Needs co-ordination.

'Valerie is an educator who is passionate about Early Years pedagogy and she has 30 years experience of working in schools both in Jamaica and here in England. Valerie is based in Birmingham where she is currently a headteacher of a Maintained Nursery School. Over the years Valerie has worked mainly in Reception and Nursery classes as an Early Years specialist but she has also worked across the entire primary phase both in Birmingham and in London where she lived for 15 years before relocating. Valerie has done a number of years working with a wider Early Years remit as a Children’s Centre teacher before becoming a headteacher in a Nursery School which was also a Children’s Centre. During this time she developed a passion for working with socio-economic issues and social injustice. One of the things she is most proud of is her development of a Community Cohesion Strategy which was quite effective for her 13 years as a Children’s Centre Leader. Valerie’s other roles include bring a trained Systems Leader and a School Improvement Partner for Primary Schools and Academies and also as a trained artist a role as creative director/artist using the mediums of art, design and creative expression to augment learning in children. Valerie has also written a practical guide for the EYS entitled ‘Learning through Play’. Valerie received her doctorate for a thesis entitled ‘The Perceptions of a Leadership Crisis in the Early Years Sector’. This research fostered a deep interest in the dynamics of how crisis situations develop and how to effect change in these circumstances. She proposes that the current Black Lives Matter protests and all issues of oppression and discrimination have the hallmarks of a crisis situation that has deep roots in deeply dysfunctional public systems that do not value people equally, and rely on a divided nation remaining divided. Valerie is divorced with two sons aged 25 and 23 years and a 3 year old granddaughter who is her motivator for a fairer and more equitable society. She proudly sits on this group as an ally of the LGBTQ community and a fierce anti-oppression advocate'

Helen Moylett is an independent early years consultant and writer. She has been head-teacher of an early years centre as well as working in schools and as a university lecturer. She was a Birth to Three Matters national trainer and from 2004-2011 she worked for the National Strategies and was centrally involved in developing the Early Years Foundation Stage and other national guidance. Helen was national lead for the Every Child a Talker programme.
She co-authored ‘Development Matters’ with Nancy Stewart and has written and edited several early years books – most recently Characteristics of Effective Early Learning: helping young children become learners for life (OU Press) and Active Learning (Practical Pre-School).
She is a Vice President of Early Education and tutors on the M.A. and PGCE courses at the Centre for Research in Early Childhood in Birmingham.

She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Teaching Fellow of the University of Northampton. She has been awarded two University of Northampton ‘Changemaker’ Awards, one in 2016 was a lifetime achievement award for her work in Early Childhood and the second in 2018 for her work with Roots of Empathy. in 2016 she was runner-up in the National Infant Mental Health Researcher of the Year award and in 2018 her book ‘Child Protection in the Early Years: A Practical Guide’ was selected as a finalist for the best professional book of the year category in the Nursery World Awards
