Sports R Dumb: Recent Episodes

Joey Held, Sean Hill

Sean and Joey love sports, but they realize there are a lot of dumb elements within our favorite games. And each week, they'll break down one of those dumb things in this tidy, bite-sized podcast.

Drop by to hear Sean lament over the stupidity of a certain aspect in sports—basketball, football, baseball, hockey, golf, tennis, volleyball, lacrosse—nothing is off-limits. If there's something dumb to talk about, you better believe we'll hit it.

We're also covering some pointless tweets, overused sports cliches, and general news that...well, doesn't need to be news.

And we love to hear from you! Give Sean or Joey (or both) a shout with your favorite dumb things.

The NHL is about a month into the season. The official NHL social media accounts are posting "if the playoffs started today" content. The playoffs start in April, notably five months from now. It's the same deal with the College Football Playoff—there are still several games to be played. These types of hypotheticals are not worth stressing over.

And we had a scorigami this weekend with an NFL score that's never happened before! Plus, do you think you could throw for at least 12 yards during an NFL game? Surely not, but, like...it feels kind of attainable, doesn't it?

Here's the Jayden Daniels play Sean referenced: https://youtu.be/5X5fC7DSokM

We just saw one of the most entertaining World Series matchups we'll likely ever witness. Yet so many arguments after the fact boil down to nitpicking certain plays, criticizing the Dodgers for spending money and "ruining" baseball, and calling people stupid for not doing a specific thing. Sure, fans of the teams actually playing can go a little bonkers, but the rest of us? We can probably all just enjoy high-quality sports at their finest.

Speaking of bonkers, how about the end of that Bears/Bengals game? Plus, a few other NFL shenanigans, one of our favorite touchdown celebrations of the year, and a surprisingly deep dive into The Beach Boys, who Sean just saw live in concert.

It's fine to tell someone they look like someone else, but just do it once. Repeatedly yelling "You look like [insert person here]" is just perplexing and no one knows how to respond. Concurrently, sports fans love to dub things the "catch/dunk/play of the year" REALLY early in the season. Are we just assuming everything else will be a dud?

Plus, we wonder how things would be if we had Pokemon trainer encounters in real life. And Joey has started a new rec basketball league and had an interesting first game. He also tries to teach Sean a few new American Sign Language words, but he mixed up a couple. What a dork!

It was a bonkers weekend of sports with multiple record-setting events. Sure, we're lamenting about the Miami Hurricanes losing a stunner at home and Jerry Jones refusing to install blinds so the Dallas Cowboys aren't blinded by the sun during late afternoon games.

But we're also covering Shohei Ohtani's bonkers NLCS Game 4 performance and the Denver Broncos with a previously unheard of level of comeback, which included a whopping 33 points in the fourth quarter.

Plus, we're reminiscing on classic computer games, and who doesn't enjoy that?

Recently, LeBron James teased a "Decision, Part 2." To people in the marketing field like Joey, this setup felt like the basis of an ad. Even to sports people such as Sean, the immediate response was not, "Oh, let me buy some expensive basketball tickets."

That WAS the response for at least one dumb fan, and now he's suing LeBron for intentionally deceiving the public. Our tax dollars are going to this court case. We hope the judge laughs in his face and makes him pay his own way for wasting everyone's time.

Plus, Sean is riding high on the Texas Longhorns' big victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the setting of the State Fair of Texas. And as of the time we recorded this, Joey doesn't know that the Cubs eventually got eliminated from the playoffs. What a joyous feeling of ignorant bliss.

Texas and Penn State were the preseason #1 and #2 teams before the college football season began. It's now Week 7 and both of those teams are completely out of the Top 25. It's almost like we're just wildly guessing at the quality of teams, and maybe we should play some games before arbitrarily assigning rankings!

This was also one of the wildest NFL weeks in recent memory, so we're breaking down the chaos of games like Niners/Rams (which included a crazy pre-game moment with Mac Jones) and Titans/Cardinals, a game where a snap bouncing off the quarterback's face was only like the fourth-most bonkers thing to happen.

Plus, Joey takes a trip to Corpus Christi and participates in some fantastic activities, like horseback riding on the beach and Moke driving. And we've got a special guest delivering a rant on yet ANOTHER player dropping the ball before scoring a touchdown.

Virginia upset a top-ten opponent in Florida State. Fans rushed the field before the ball even touched the ground. Thankfully, the two players in the corner of the end zone are alive and didn't get trampled by, you know, hordes of people like they were a plague of locusts o'er the land.

Meanwhile, Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell made one of the most impressive catches we've seen so far this year. He then did some nifty spins and jukes and was running free toward the end zone when he decided to showboat. Alas, the ball rolled out of his hand and out of bounds for a touchback. Whoopsie!

Plus, the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers end in a tie, some unhinged press conference moments, and the rollercoaster experience that is watching Baker Mayfield. What a weekend.

The Chicago Bears hosted the Dallas Cowboys this weekend, which meant Joey and Sean's teams were going up against each other. One of us emerged victorious and happy, and it wasn't the Cowboys fan. But at least Sean has Texas Longhorns football to fall back on. Arch Manning dominated a school in a lower division...that's something, right?

Plus, an absurd number of blocked field goals, we're celebrating World Gratitude Day, and Sean starts a point before forgetting what he's talking about halfway through. We've all been there.

When Sean and Joey were kids, there seemed to be no shortage of funky batting stances. Tony Batista. Jeff Bagwell. Craig Counsell. Chuck Knoblauch. Kevin Youkilis. Right after a season ends, shows, writers, and fans will start creating their "way too early" lists for the next year. This is often before any transfers, drafts, or free agency periods take place. So, you know, no team is going to look like it does now. How silly!

Plus, we dissect what we'd do with the Stanley Cup if we won an NHL title and got to parade the cup around town. The creativity is quite impressive, if we do say so ourselves.

There have been a lot of fights in the WNBA lately. Caitlin Clark is involved in a handful of them, largely because the entire league seems to dislike her. Yet some of the reactions and coverage of these fights is very holier than thou.

ESPN canceled long-time program Around the Horn, a staple for both Sean and Joey during their formative years and into adulthood. The show had a terrific run, but we're more concerned with what ESPN is replacing it with: nothing of note.

We're running out of shows that highlight sports journalism and instead just want talking heads that can either break news or yell at each other. Joey has 10 players on his rec league team, but only four showed up for his most recent game. Where was everyone else? First things first: If you're in the U.S., please vote!

Now, for the episode: Mookie Betts makes a catch in the crowd, and fans try to break his wrist to wrestle the ball from his grasp. Jason Kelce gets asked a homophobic question. Why do fans think they can treat players so poorly and not face repercussions?

Thankfully, in both cases, the offending parties were punished — in the latter, Jason Kelce smashed the guy’s phone on the ground, which you love to see. But still, this is not the behavior anyone needs.

Plus, outfielders losing track of outs in an inning and prematurely throwing the ball into the stands, throwbacks to both How I Met Your Mother and Sister, Sister and the best way to respond to trash getting thrown on the field.

Miami won on a Hail Mary that was overturned, and people got enraged. They yelled things like, "How could you say there was indisputable evidence?" or suggesting the NCAA is rigged. These same folks seem to conveniently overlook other elements from the game like Virginia Tech failing at a fake field goal or being extremely casual with time management on the final drive.

As it turns out, a game consists of more than just one play. And this is hardly the only context where it's happened. So, try not to overreact too much to one moment, yeah? It's a good rule for life in general.

Since we recorded, we also lost sports legends Dikembe Mutombo and Pete Rose. Our thoughts are with their families, and we hope you do a finger wag or make a graceful slide in their honor.

Joey has attended MANY baseball games in person over the past month or so. He's noticed a trend at some of these stadiums: People standing in the way, completely unaware of other fans around them. Sean has seating gripes, too. It all boils down to the simple lesson of having just the littlest bit of compassion for your fellow human.

Sean’s car got broken into — that is DUMB. But it’s not about sports, so it only gets an honorable mention in this episode.

The rest of his ire is directed at the copious amounts of streaming services that offer live games. Trying to keep up with everything is an impossible task when you need to subscribe to approximately 194 different platforms—and you still often don’t get all the advertised games. As always, greed and money play a significant factor.

We hope you get to watch your favorite games without issue. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!

The NFL is back! And thankfully, there was no shortage of dumb moments both on and off the field. From Tyreek Hill getting handcuffed on his way to the game to Will Levis's truly baffling interception, we're diving into our favorites.

Sean is also free from fantasy football, and he's never been happier! Now he just needs to watch out for giant American flags.

During terrible tragedies, such as the recent death of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, people across the Internet offer their condolences. Many of those fans will also share that they’re fans of another team. “As an Islanders fan, this is so sad,” for example. No, folks, as a human being, this is so sad. We don’t need to make it about us.

Plus, we talk about The Mole with Anderson Cooper and MadTV. Nothing like reminiscing on shows that have been off the air for approximately 16 to 23 years! And the Buffalo Bills know quite a few obscure NBA players. You love to see it!

Note: We recorded this before the Gaudreau tragedy happened, which is why it’s absent from the episode. It’s an awful event. Give your loved ones a hug.

It’s Joey’s birthday celebration, and he’s already been distressed by a cake promotion at his local grocery store, but we’re powering through! Unfortunately, today’s topic is also powering through sports, and that’s real dumb.

We’re seeing just about every player doing the “too small” taunt to opponents. And people are referring to everyone as “him,” or, even worse, saying, “I’m him” after making a play. A person in Joey’s rec league did this. As Sean notes, if you are paying to play in a league, you are, in fact, not him.

Plus, Joey sent a sternly worded email that actually got a result! And tell us this Relient K song isn’t a banger from an album with a beautiful punny title.

What do the Little League World Series and a puddle of drool have in common? They both feel sort of icky to see on your TV. Yet, year after year, people watch these children play baseball, sometimes getting mad when they make mistakes. You know, because they're not even teenagers, and none of us were graceful back then.

Joey and Sean both went to separate Texas Rangers games within the past week. Beyond that, Joey had a weird dinner experience, and Sean has a hot take about live baseball.

The Olympics have been a delight—for the most part. We still have people critiquing athletes like Noah Lyles and suggesting Sha'Carri Richardson should boycott the race she's been training for eight years to run to prove a point about Parisian etiquette.

As Simone Biles noted, many people are asking what Olympians do after winning a medal. Maybe those Olympians can enjoy their wildly impressive accomplishments?

Willie Mays and Queen Elizabeth died. And in all of those instances—and more—Nick Castellanos has hit a home run. Here, have a montage!

Also, Sean apologizes for getting a couple of facts wrong, like this latest dinger coming in a losing effort in the bottom of the ninth when it actually happened during the top of the ninth in a Phillies victory.

Plus, Team USA basketball is narrowly beating teams in their practice games, Sean is sore from diving and slam dunking at a pool party, and Joey has a cousin in the Olympics! Keep an eye out for Ryan Held in the 4 x 100 men’s swimming freestyle relay.

We're in the dog days of summer. That means we're wondering whether the members of Team USA can spin a basketball on their fingers and trying to fool coworkers with a fictitious shark petting zoo in honor of Shark Week.

Bobby Bonilla last played in the MLB in 2001. The New York Mets continue to pay him about $1.2 million every July 1, which they will continue to do until 2035 when Bonilla is 72 years old. It’s the wildest contract in all of pro sports.

Plus, a look at the California state income tax and why Shohei Ohtani is deferring the majority of his contract until after it ends. And the NBA Draft happened! Did you watch? The NBA Draft is this week! It’s always been one night for both rounds, but this year, the league is mixing it up with TWO days of the draft. The second day starts at 4 pm ET, which is very early.

Plus, our favorite draft cliches and how silly it is that players have to wear the hat of the team that drafted them, even if they’ve already been traded. Oh, and how about Monty Williams making $78 million to win 14 games and then being fired after one season? Brilliant move, truly. When we recorded this, the Mavericks and Celtics had only played one game. Lots of chatter said Game 2 was a must-win. Well, the Mavericks didn't win it, so...guess we can all go home?

On top of that, reporters are dropping news from sources at wild times, such as the Lakers non-story about maybe signing Dan Hurley (spoiler: that didn't happen) during the NBA Finals and the USA Women's roster being announced after the "breaking news" that Caitlin Clark wasn't on it. Sean wonders what these sources get out of saying things.

Plus, Sean might start a new fast food fries ranking and we wax poetic about AIM away messages.

Sean is feeling exceptionally old today and in full “get off my lawn mode.” What’s the cause of his ire? TikToks and spin classes, naturally, but the main culprit is Photoshopped jerseys.

A player gets drafted or sent to a new team but hasn’t played a game yet? Let’s make an image of them wearing the latest jersey. A player is rumored to be traded? Let’s see how they look in the uniforms of every team in the league. The latest and greatest players to experience this are Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday (to the Bucks and Celtics, respectively), but you’ll find this trend across all players and sports.

What if we took this Photoshopping to new heights and put Dame Time in a heavy metal shirt or a Halloween costume? Why limit it to the NBA? Shout out to the Jenkins and Jonez podcast, who have delivered lots of good stuff around the Lillard trade and plenty of other hoops news.

Recently, Minnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison fumbled the ball a couple of times in an NFL game. Also recently, Texas beat Alabama on the road. In both cases, fans were shouting death threats, spouting racial epithets, and just being complete fools.

This happens across sports. Why do so many fans feel obliged to personally attack people they've never met and probably are never going to meet? You wouldn't do that directly to someone's face in a 1-on-1 setting, so why do it from behind a keyboard or in a group mob?

No matter the sport, fans love complaining about the officials. Sometimes, we want them to blow the whistle, but they opt not to make a call. Other times, we want them to be wrong so that it favors our team or a more fun outcome, and the officials ultimately make the right decision. Don't they know we want to be entertained?!

The first down from this nifty New England Patriots lateral was overturned. A holding penalty not being called on a two-point conversion prevented the Denver Broncos from fully capitalizing on this wild Hail Mary.

As fans, we want to be entertained. Refs should keep that in mind when making — or not making — calls. The Gladiator cast would be so disappointed.

Plus, it's Sean's final season playing fantasy football. No, really. He means it this time. Listen to how he knows it's real.

We also dive into quite a bit of pizza talk. But you can never have enough pizza talk, so all is well.

You know what's not dumb, though? Mike McDaniel's antics.

We rank teams at the start of every college football season even though we don't know how good these teams actually are. Then we all overreact and yell about upsets when many of these teams may just actually not be very good. Why do we do this to ourselves?

Plus, does it seem like there are fewer roly poly bugs and fireflies out in the world? And we discuss what our player swag bags would be if Sports R Dumb sponsored a bowl game.

Are you ready for some footballlllll? College football is underway, and the NFL starts this week. That means there are plenty of opportunities for dumb moments.

We're covering absurd start times in heat waves, suspensions from the NCAA around transfer rules, coaches getting too cute with late-game decisions, and much more.

Plus, dumb predictions for the NFL season, a cliche about misunderstood quotes, and what the heck was this chain crew doing?

Also, Joey's story about the Rolling Stones was all wrong. It was Merry Clayton singing backup vocals on "Gimme Shelter." It's like he barely even knows his pop music trivia!

The movie The Blind Side depicted football player Michael Oher in a less than flattering light. And his adoptive parents, the Tuohys, helped raise him into a man. Well, as it turns out, Oher is saying this "adoption" was actually a "conservatorship."

As a result, Oher has missed out on millions of dollars from the movie. It seems like there's a lot of manipulation going on, which is never a good thing.

Plus, a radical look at the simpler times of the 90s, and when ads pop up on an Internet screen and your entire page reloads. And do you remember what movie won Best Picture in 2009, the same year The Blind Side came out?

We're starting this episode off with FLAIR. James Harden joined the Philadelphia 76ers largely because of 76ers president Daryl Morey. But now, Harden has said Morey is a liar, and he will never be in an organization that he's a part of. And then he REPEATED it. Just in case there was any doubt, you know?

This comes on the heels of Harden requesting a trade (specifically to the Los Angeles Clippers) and the 76ers ending trade talks when they couldn't pull that move off. It's more offseason drama we don't need, but it sure does make for some fascinating content.

This is now the third time in three years Harden has requested a trade from his team. It's also extra silly because he opted into an extra year of his contract when he could have just signed with the Clippers as a free agent.

Plus, the silliness of trade machines, a pretty good poop joke, and a sports cliche about the media. What a grand ol' time.

Sean and Joey are dressed in Christmas colors, even though it's early August. But lamenting about how college football is destroying conferences is fashionable any time of year!

The Big Ten has 18 teams in it. The Big 12 has 14 teams. The Atlantic Coast Conference is considering adding schools from the Dallas and San Francisco metro areas. It makes no sense geographically, but it does add sweet sweet dollars to the pockets of conference executives. Unfortunately, it hurts athletes from just about every other sport.

Plus, Sean recovers from a bout with Covid (don't worry, he's all good now), we have stylish branded checkbooks, and baseball games are so speedy nowadays, aren't they?

By the way, do us a SUPER solid and leave a review wherever you're listening to this podcast. We'll give you ample amounts of praise in a future episode!

Sean recounts how his innocent charm protected him from any teammate hazing in high school, while Joey shares that his teammates were too goofy for any hazing to actually take place.

Plus, a fun challenge: Try having a phone call where you act like you're very mad. It worked for the Impractical Jokers — surely it can work for you, too!

This episode is a big moment in Sports R Dumb history! To commemorate, we’re talking about historical contracts in pro sports — particularly, how UP IN ARMS everyone gets about every contract setting a new record of some kind.

Jaylen Brown’s historical deal broke NBA records. Justin Herbert will be making more money per season than anyone before him…at least, until another guy signs a bigger contract. And by the way, those contracts aren’t nearly as big as they seem. We dive into why that is.

Plus, we explore some blockbuster movies, fun language quirks, and why Sean’s voice sounds a little rougher than usual today. And Joey shares a somber tale about getting the yips during his high school basketball career.

Damian Lillard is arguably the greatest player the Portland Trail Blazers have ever had. But the team wants to head in a new direction, and Lillard has asked for a trade. The twist: He only wants to go to the Miami Heat. No other options.

That's led to a month-long impasse where, nearly every day, we get an update that neither side is willing to budge. Oh, really? We're shocked! In the meantime, we see constant media hypotheticals of potential starting lineups, and Twitter artistes Photoshop Lillard into every possible jersey.

In sports like basketball and football, the annual All-Star Game and Pro Bowl, respectively, are filled with low-effort attempts at defense, with flashiness the main item on the agenda. In the Major Leagues, there's TOO much effort, which makes the All-Star Game feel a bit like every other contest of the 162-game season.

Ancillary events can be pretty dumb, too. Julio Rodriguez hit 41 home runs in the first round and didn't end up winning because he hit too many home runs in the first round. Aaron Gordon was a phenomenal dunker in the 2016 Slam Dunk Contest and in subsequent years and still has not won a Dunk Contest.

Plus, it's about time for Sean's fantasy football league to start up again. Has he thought enough about his keepers for the upcoming season? He's also got a ringing endorsement for the show Quarterback, which features Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota. All of whom happen to be quarterbacks — you like that!

We also discuss some silly elements of classic video games and Joey shares a devastating story about his time hosting karaoke.

Picture this: You're watching your favorite sports team play. They're not doing great, but they're trying their best (or maybe they're not). Suddenly, a barrage of beer cans, bottles, and other trash starts raining onto the field. We also look at some of the more bizarre traditions in sports, such as Detroit Red Wings fans tossing octopuses onto the ice and Taylor University students remaining completely quiet until their team hits 10 points, then storming the court.

We're back in business — and what a bonus, the Texas Rangers are having a surprising renaissance this season! But Sean's fandom isn't nearly what it used to be. This is a very "waxing poetic" episode with a lot of random names from the 90s and 00s, and why meeting your heroes and learning about them off the field can sometimes be a terrible idea.

As it turns out, punching a dude in the face is not the best highlight to latch onto for a sports franchise. Here's that Rougned Odor on Jose Bautista punch Sean was talking about. He's right, it is a great photo. And here's Elvis Andrus touching the top of Adrian Beltre's head, among other things.

In American sports, if you lose, you're rewarded with a higher draft pick. That means you'll sometimes see teams intentionally losing—or tanking—at the end of the year.

Plus, watching games among opposing sports fans, incredibly raspy voices, and Sean has a wild burger experience.

  • The Mavericks giving up an uncontested dunk after standing on the wrong side of the court.
  • The jersey exchange between Kyrie Irving and Dillon Brooks.
  • The old Mavericks logo.

  • The Florida Atlantic mascot, Owlsley.

Sean and Joey both love March Madness, but as they throw their brackets in the trash and then light that trash can on fire, they've noticed plenty of dumb things during the NCAA Tournament.

From possession arrows to repetitive commercials to the guy intentionally incorrectly counting down a shot clock, there's lots of absurdity to go around. And we're breaking it all down in one modest package.

Also, let's give a shout-out to the UMBC Athletics Twitter presence. Still delivering us gold like this.

Joey's favorite time of year is March Madness. The NCAA Tournament, baby! He loves filling out brackets and following along with all of the thrilling chaos. Who will be this year's Cinderella? Can he correctly predict the champion? Will he defeat his smug coworker by selecting the proper 11/6 upset?

Meanwhile, Sean HATES the idea of filling out brackets. He hasn't done it for nearly a decade. And he believes people who do it are way too overconfident in their ability, even though they have virtually zero chance of completing a perfect bracket.

Regardless of your feelings on brackets, the games themselves are delightful. Sean and I even attended some in-person last year — and Sean saw his uncle being interviewed by a local news team! Wild. As Gus Johnson would say, "This is March Madness!"

Here are every school's team sheets from last year. They're certainly confusing, but they're kinda fun to look at!

Back in the day, the All-Star Game meant something, dammit! But now, nobody seems to really care — defense is non-existent, rules are brazenly broken, and players understandably don't want to get hurt in a game that doesn't count. So, what could the solution be?

We don't really have one. But we do know having the winner of an All-Star Game get rewarded come championship time — like how Major League Baseball gave home-field advantage to the league that won — is a terrible idea. At the very least, let's bring back those old All-Star jerseys!

Despite our qualms, there were some memorable moments from this year's All-Star games across sports. We're diving into that magic, including when Janelle Monae forgot that her team was on offense.

There are also slight spoilers for the show Squid Game at the beginning of this episode, though probably not worse than anything you've heard from friends who couldn't wait to talk about it.

Meanwhile, serious things that sometimes are literal criminal activity have a similar fine or no punishment at all.

Plus, we dive into some of the weirdest fines you can get in every state, like sleeping in a bakery in Illinois or dying certain animals blue in Kentucky. And we take a walk down memory lane involving $2 bills and the time Joey ended up on a box of Frosted Flakes.

Finally, here's Homer's brain floating away.

And DON'T GET US STARTED on replay reviews. Seriously, please don't. We already have another episode on that.

Plus, a silly sports cliche about winning, and remember that time LeBron James wore business shorts after telling the media to be better?

Plus, Sean was a key component to his team's hockey league championship! And a silly sports cliche about the way teams play.

By the way, if you enjoyed this episode, please share with someone! Word of mouth is super important for a podcast like this that doesn't have a million-dollar budget, and your support means SO MUCH. Thanks for listening and keep being wonderful.

In any other sport, if you have the ball in your hand when a clock strikes zero, there's some kind of penalty. In football, the play clock often hits zero but the officials make no call because they are busy looking at the ball, then up at the clock, then back to the player snapping the ball.

Luckily, Sean and I have come up with some clever ways to solve this issue that only involves a minor mutiny or amount of electroshock. And you're going to learn a LOT about how the NFL uses RFID technology, and that's a pretty cool thing (all in less than 15 minutes, to boot!).

This episode really takes a turn though when Sean talks about a video game that simulated being in an electric chair. Joey has never heard of such a machine, but apparently it's featured in multiple arcades throughout the country. Did you ever play this game?

Plus, Sean earns a bronze toilet while playing in his new hockey league, and we discuss a silly sports cliche about when you might answer something.

We go to a sporting event to see actual sports played on a court or field. So why do we delay the start of these events with The Star-Spangled Banner? It's even more perplexing when you consider how international sports have become, with some teams having more foreigners than Americans.

Sure, we may get a gem of a trainwreck such as Carl Lewis, but more often than not we're just kind of standing around for a few minutes. And that seems a bit pandering, doesn't it?

Plus, Sean shares a fun personal story about getting demolished in a pickleball match, we offer some airport tips while traveling, and we dive into a silly sports cliche.

What's your favorite kind of cupcake? Joey's is red velvet, particularly the tasty ones from Nothing Bundt Cakes. Sean likes some buttercream with a drizzle of caramel on vanilla. And if you're a college football powerhouse, your favorite cupcake is a small school that you get to demolish on an annual basis. Sean thinks that's pretty darn dumb and rude to those smaller schools. Unless they win, then it's awesome.

Sean also learns what the term "imbibing" means and discusses missing out on a social obligation because he ate too much pizza. And a silly sports cliche about how offense works.

Finally, Sean is PROCLAIMING on this very episode that this is his final season of fantasy football. Will he stick to that promise? Who's to say for sure, but in the meantime, follow along with his frustrations on Instagram.

The average football game takes three hours and 23 minutes. Yet only 18 of those minutes contain actual gameplay. That's WILD. And we don't like how long these football games last. There's too much downtime, and far too many commercials. In fact, let's take a commercial right now.

Okay, welcome back. We're also talking about painful massages, cupcakes being served at football games, and terribly close flip cup games,

Plus, a personal story about Joey's horrific basketball rec league and a sports cliche about things leaving and then returning. And we go on quite the 90s music tangent — who's your favorite member of TLC? How about the Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC? We're chatting through it all and it's magical (and also the reason why this is our longest episode yet).

Oh, and Sean has a fantasy football draft today! Follow along with his frustrations over on Instagram.

There aren't that many college football games in a season. But if you get a targeting penalty, you're going to miss one (or half of two, which adds up to one). And it's pretty difficult to tell intent or if a player is moving their body in a certain way. Hooray for ejecting people from a game!

Plus, skeletons and Dracula, a sports cliche about some of the things players do, and we reflect on the time Sean got completely demolished on a football player. Stay safe out there, everyone.

The college football season starts this week. That's very exciting, isn't it? NO, it's college football LOL! Why can't players make money? Why is the NCAA such a sham? Why is targeting a penalty? Why does the Big Ten Conference have 16 teams in it? We're trying to figure it all out, so lament along with us, won't you?

Plus, silly bowl games, tailgating adventures, and French restaurants. Also, isn't it weird how there are so many people in our lives we'll never actually see in person again?

Sean has also never seen Anchorman, which seems insane for a boy that grew up in the 90s. Feel free to send him your favorite quotes. He would very much enjoy that.

Want some more shenanigans? Or care to see Sean cry during his fantasy football draft? Be sure to follow the show on Instagram @sportsrdumb.

We promise we don't normally use as many question marks as we did in this episode's show notes.

For about 15 years, Joey played fantasy football. He, fortunately, escaped the rubble a few years back, but Sean is still in the endless cycle of torture. Drafting players is fun. Managing those players throughout the season is HIGHLY frustrating. But boy, it's fun to hear Sean get riled up about it.

On the plus side, the rise of fantasy football did give us the excellent Fantasy Files commercials. Here are some of the highlights.

We're also covering a silly sports cliche about having the right pieces. And sorry that Sean talks about his fantasy team. We know that's always gross. Just like fantasy football in general.

Most sports have salary caps. Though they're designed as a way to "increase parity" across sports, these salary caps really just limit what a player can earn. Sean thinks we should rally together as fans to boycott sports until they get rid of salary caps. This will not happen but it's an admirable thought.

Plus, have you ever played the lottery? Wouldn't it have been nice to win a jackpot of $1.34 billion (which turned into $433.7 million after taxes on the lump sum)? Or maybe you'd rather prefer a nice fancy bidet, instead.

Sean also shares his grievances with pickleball, while Joey somehow remembers a chaotic ultimate frisbee moment from high school. And of course, a silly sports cliche about when people arrive at a practice facility.

Kyler Murray just signed a $230.5 million deal. That's a lot of money, but we're more interested in the particulars of his contract. Namely, the part that said he had to watch four hours of game film a week and couldn't be distracted by the Internet, video games, TV, or anything else. You know, like he were a child and not a professional athlete.

Meanwhile, Sean attends a birthday party of his friend's child and eats some of the best cake balls he's ever had. Do you also eat dinner before you go someplace where you think you might not enjoy the meal you're eating? Sean does, and Joey thinks that's kind of strange.

Plus, Sean almost rages against Elon Musk and why the University of Oklahoma calls itself OU, but those are topics for another episode. Instead, we're sharing a story from Sean's personal sporting life. And of course, we still have a silly sports cliche about the playing style of certain athletes.

Are you following us on Instagram? It's the only platform we're on, so if you're not on Instagram (and we get it, they're making dumb changes), feel free to just shout loudly. We'll hear you.

You cross home plate in baseball and that's a score. A basket in basketball is a score. But tennis scoring is pretty bonkers: Love, 15, 30, 40, game.

We're diving into the history of where "love" comes from in scoring, and trying to determine once and for all where this wacky scoring system came from. We've never done so much research for an episode, so enjoy our hard work!

Plus, a concerning tweet about boys from Cristiano Ronaldo and a silly sports cliche about the measurement of sports.

Sean doesn't know if hell is high, but today's topic pisses him off to high hell. When a team wants to build a new ballpark (and it's often a want, not a need), it turns to its city to help pay for it. The billionaire owners don't pay for it, the hardworking citizens do. That's quite dumb.

Joey and Sean also discuss the corporate feel of the new Texas Rangers stadium, plus a terrible night out for a 21-year-old Sean after drinking a ridiculous beverage from a bar.

Plus, a tweet that wasn't even good in 2013 and a sports cliche about the types of faces we have.

At one point in the history of baseball, a lot of people were using steroids. But Hall of Fame voters think some of those players shouldn't be enshrined in Cooperstown. Like Barry Bonds (who hit lots of home runs) or Pete Rose (who bet on his own team). And that rankles Sean's feathers.

Joey and Sean also discuss the Louisville Slugger Museum and away messages from the days of AOL Instant Messenger (which we lovingly called AIM, duh).

Plus, a perplexing tweet from Ja Morant and a tremendous sports cliche about how good players can be.

A lot of golfers are defecting from the PGA to LIV, which is backed by Saudi Arabia. It's been a popular topic of discussion among the media, but Sean has a more interesting query: is golf even a sport?

Sean doesn't think so. One of his reasons is John Daly, seen here looking like he's having a grand ol' time. Meanwhile, do you know how to escape from an alligator when it's trying to attack you?

Plus, a tweet that shows LeBron James has too much time on his hands, and a silly sports cliche about

Sports shows need to fill a lot of airtime, and one great way to do that? With some lists, of course! And Sean thinks it's spectacularly dumb, especially when a top 5 list ends up having a tie and we get six players on it. Then the fans get SO MAD about it. This is just one person's dumb opinion! They're not saying a player is bad because they're not on a list.

Meanwhile, why do we mainly do top 5, top 7, top 9, or top 10 lists? Also, isn't Ryan Gosling as Ken pretty fantastic? And a shameless plug for our podcast Parks n Wrecked, which is a great listen. Check it out here!

Plus, a friendly thirsty tweet from former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, and a silly sports cliche about where you leave stuff during a game.

In baseball, you have pitchers and non-pitchers. Yet in blowout games, we're often seeing those non-pitchers take the mound. What gives? Well, teams are trying to rest their pitching staff, but the results of, say, an outfielder pitching are...typically not great.

We're also briefly touching on the 2017 film Going in Style and the chaos of trying to pitch in little league.

Plus, a hysterically observant tweet by Jason Concepcion and a silly sports cliche about the amount of time we need to do good work.

In basketball and football, the dimensions of the playing courts and fields are all the same. How come baseball is so wacky and doesn't maintain any kind of consistency? A home run in one park is different than a home run in another one? That's wild! And what do we have to do to get a monster on every field, defending the walls from potential home runs?

We're also diving into some of the top fields from the glorious Backyard Baseball computer game, including the prestigious Eckman Acres and Cement Gardens. Plus, a shout-out to everyone's favorite pot-bellied kid, Pablo Sanchez.

Plus, a non-steroid tweet from Jose Canseco, and a silly sports cliche about the amount of time we all have left.

In sports such as hockey, people go to the games in hopes of seeing a fight. In sports such as basketball — not so much. Why is that? Would a penalty box in other sports help the situation?

Sean also tries to name various members of Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. How do you think he does? And Joey is irritated by Delta Airlines, but their poor communication did allow him to see the delightful movie The Biggest Little Farm*.

Plus, an uneducational tweet by former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones, and a silly sports cliche about playing games.

Have you ever thought there should be more goals in soccer? Soccer officials sure don't — and they'll call offsides penalties whenever they have a chance, often eliminating a score in the process. Video Assistant Referees (VAR) aren't helping the issue, either. Sean finds that pretty darn dumb. On the plus side, there are no commercial breaks aside from halftime and that is awesome.

We also dive back into sports fandom, which we've covered in previous episodes. But there's more sadness to be had. And the Slime Monster is back!

Plus, a direct tweet from Mitchell Trubisky, and a silly sports cliche about Z.

There are a lot of rules in baseball. Some of them are clearly stated, while others are unwritten, but everyone is just supposed to know. This episode is about that latter category.

We also share some of our ideal home run celebrations. Because hitting a home run is hard work, and we should celebrate accordingly. And this play from Francisco Lindor while being interviewed is super cool!

Plus, a misunderstood tweet from DeSean Jackson and a silly sports cliche about who you should be paying attention to. Also, here's that Bojack Horseman sign joke video we talked about.

If you've been keeping an eye on the NBA playoffs, you might have noticed an alarming trend: an increase in flopping. Nobody wants to watch a game with people falling down like dominoes, led by future Hall of Famer Chris Paul.

Plus, remember when Chris Rock was randomly at the Dave Chappelle show where the latter comedian got attacked? That was weird.

Also, a look at when the ambulance used to run over players in games of Madden (shout out to this wonderful runaway cart ), a geographically absurd tweet from Magic Johnson, and a silly sports cliche about how often we should take things.

We understand sports networks need to fill airtime. But some of these debate-centric shows are quite ridiculous. From "who's the best?" to "why are we paying this person so much money?", there's no shortage of dumb things to argue about. Hannibal Buress was spot on with his "Bold Predictions" bit.

Could cushy TV jobs be the best gig in the world? Have you ever debated about something stupid? Are there too many question marks in this description?

Plus, a dumb energetic tweet from Russell Wilson, and a silly sports cliche that might surprise you.

Have you ever struggled when deciding what to wear? College football recruits often do. They have several hats in front of them, yet they never seem to know which one to put on! Sean thinks that’s pretty dumb.

We discuss some of the joys and pains of running around tracks and through neighborhoods. We also reminisce on some of our public speaking training. Clearly, it’s paid off with this fabulous podcast.

Plus, a look at some of the classic cars from driving school. And do you have a favorite Nickelodeon game show?

There's a really odd rule in college basketball that you might not even know about. It involves the jerseys that players wear, and while said rule kind of makes sense, it's still quite silly.

Because Joey was the one that first learned about this rule, Sean lets him have the floor to rant. But don't worry, because Sean releases plenty of unhinged frustration during this episode, too.

We're also covering some of the classic meals we'd eat after school — Joey's afternoon routine of a bagel with cream cheese and peanut butter was somehow the healthier of the two.

Plus, a dumb tweet from Emmanuel Acho and a ridiculous sports cliche about the types of games people should or should not win. And don't forget to follow the show on Instagramfor more shenanigans.

During this NFL postseason, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills played in one of the most entertaining football games we've ever witnessed. Yet the Bills never got a chance to play on offense in overtime, so Josh Allen and co. had to sit on the sidelines as they watched their season end.

Enough people complained about this rule that the NFL changed it, but only in certain circumstances. Sean thinks this is an extra dumb rule.

That kind of ruins the game and makes you want to scream, doesn't it? Welcome, you're among friends here.

Sean also laments about when you can call timeouts and teaches us a new game called "That's McDonald's." Play along at home!

You probably banged knees, or you fell to the ground and it hurt. But as you looked up at the referee next to you? They called an offensive foul.

Sean hates this. He thinks charges r dumb, and we're diving into some of our stupidest offensive foul stories, which often end in a white-hot rage similar to how Sean feels about this topic.

March Madness is right around the corner, and though the NCAA Tournament brings plenty of exciting buzzer beaters, memorable moments, and impressive plays, it also brings something else that's pretty dumb: intentional fouls.

Why is it that an intentional foul at any other point of the game penalizes the team that commits the foul, but duringthe end of the game, it's the team being fouled that is at a disadvantage (especially because college teams struggle to shoot free throws)? Sean will break this all down in a way that only he can.

Plus, a silly tweet from Magic Johnson.
