Happy Speech Delay Awareness Month! May is such a important month for raising awareness and breaking the stigma surrounding speech delay. I had the pleasure of interview Samantha Ms Royal North West who will be competing in the Royal UK finals in September. Her platform is raising awareness about autism and supporting the charity Space4Autism. She talked about her son Noah and the diagnosis journey they have been on and she also offered some amazing advice to parents who are in a similar situation. May is better speech & hearing month and in this week’s episode I wanted to explain in detail why this awareness month is so important! I even did a little research into who created the awareness month and found out some shocking historical facts about people who struggled with communicating. I had an amazing discussion with Amy the current Miss Teen Pageant Girl Southampton about what it is like to be a sibling to someone who had speech delay and had autism. Being a sibling myself to someone who has severe speech delay it was amazing to talk to someone who understands what it is like and how difficult it may be sometimes. In this episode I was joined with my special guest Kirsty who is a finalist for UK’s National Miss and will be competing in July. She is also a mother and her daughter Summer is currently undergoing tests for autism. We talked all about the process of testing for autism and the signs Summer was showing which raised concern. I had a lovely time chatting to Leandrie Matthews a fellow pageant girl all about her connection to speech therapy. Leandrie plans to become a speech, language and hearing therapist. We talked all about why she has decided on this particular career path and the need for more people to become speech and language therapists. The podcast has now reached an international audience with Leandrie being our first guest from South Africa!
