Bear Christianity: Recent Episodes

Barrett "Bear" Martin

I grew up in a Christian home, graduated from a Christian school, and was part of a family who seemed to be at church all the time. Inspired by the book, "Mere Christianity", by C.S. Lewis, I became obsessed with knowing why I believe what I believe. Is Christianity true or was I brainwashed by my parents and teachers? This podcast is about my journey searching for truth.I am not a pastor and my episodes are not meant to be sermons. I cover topics that have interested me over the past several years of study. Each episode is uncut. I simply hit record and try to follow the outline in front of me. Who knows what we will get into?Join me if you have ever struggled with some of these questions:"Does God exist?""Why would a loving God send people to hell?""Is the Bible reliable?""Is Christianity the only true religion?""What is the Trinity?"

In the 14th episode of Doctrine 4 Doxology, I discuss the Foreknowledge of God and answer some hypothetical objections to what the Bible teaches about the Eternal Decree of God.

God's Foreknowledge is not God looking through time, seeing who chooses Him and who rejects Him, and then electing those who choose Him to eternal life. Rather, God's foreknowledge is God choosing to enter into a special relationship with certain people. This is by His grace and is based on God's own good pleasure.

In the 13th episode of Doctrine 4 Doxology, I discuss the Eternal Decrees of God. There are two categories of God's Will. First, His Decretive Will is secret and eternal. It cannot change. Second, God's Preceptive Will is based on God's "precepts" or laws. People break God's Preceptive Will all the time.

In this first episode of Doctrine 4 Doxology (formerly Bear Christianity), I introduce what will be a very long series covering Biblical Doctrines. The purpose of know Biblical doctrine is so that we know God, and thus, our worship of God is in Spirit AND TRUTH. This is why it is called doctrine 4 doxology. Doxology refers to a short phrase of praise to God, but more generally refers to our worship of God.

In this episode, I discuss a common "problem" presented to Christians about an error or contradiction in the Bible. It's found by comparing the following two verses.

(2 Kings 8:26, NKJV) Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri, king of Israel.

(2 Chronicles 22:2, NKJV) Ahaziah was forty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri.

Notice, I quoted from the New King James Version (NKJV) of the Bible instead of ESV. The ESV has "twenty-two" for both verses.

This is the 8th episode in a series about the Glory of God. God is most glorified in the salvation of sinners. The final stage of that is called "glorification."

Romans 8:29–30For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

QuotesWhat is the glory of God? It is the manifestation of any or all of his attributes. In other words, it is the displaying of God to the world. Thus, things which glorify God are things which show the characteristics of his being to the world.

Charles Caldwell RyrieGod’s glory is and must forever remain the Christian’s true point of departure. Anything that begins anywhere else, whatever it is, is certainly not New Testament Christianity.1

A. W. TozerPrayer, like everything else in the Christian life, is for God’s glory and for our benefit, in that order.

R. C. SproulThe greatest argument of Scripture is the glory of God’s own name.

Charles SimeonThis is the way we “fall short” of the glory of God: We exchange it for something of lesser value. All sin comes from not putting supreme value on the glory of God—this is the very essence of sin.

John PiperLet it be God’s glory and not our own that we seek, and when we get to that point, how speedily the Lord will bless us for good.

Dwight L. MoodyIt is because man in the creative order bears the image of his Creator that the Son of God could become incarnate as man and in his humanity display the glory of the invisible God.

F. F. BruceA sight of God’s glory humbles. The stars vanish when the sun appears.

Thomas WatsonYou will never glory in God till first of all God has killed your glorying in yourself.

Charles Spurgeon“Glory” in the Bible characteristically refers to the magnificent presence of the Lord, and the eternal state was often pictured as a time when God’s people would experience and have a part in that “glory”

Douglas J. MooEdwards is absolutely right: “God is glorified not only by His glory’s being seen, but by its being rejoiced in.” If we do not rejoice in God, we do not glorify God as we ought.

John PiperHow often do you think of your salvation in this way? ‘The glory of God’!

David Martyn Lloyd-JonesThe glory of God is all His attributes added together and raised to the nth degree.

Lewis Sperry ChaferJesus doesn’t merely reflect the glory of God; he is the Glory of God.

R. C. SproulJesus does not just reflect the brightness of the glory of God. He is the brightness of the glory of God.

This is the 5th episode on the glory of God. I discuss the importance of Jesus being fully God and fully man and the implications of this in regards to our forgiveness.

Romans 3:23-26"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus."

This is the fourth episode in a series on the Glory of God. In this episode I talk about how God forgives sin yet upholds His own perfection in holiness and righteousness. God is "just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus." This is contrasted against Allah. In the Quran, Allah is said to be "the most gracious" and "the most merciful." However, what happens to the punishment for sin if Allah chooses to forgive. Allah may be gracious and merciful, but without perfectly punishing all sin, then Allah is unjust. This is a major reason I reject Islam as the one true religion.

Romans 3:23-26"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This is the second episode in a series on the Glory of God. In this episode I give my explanation for what it means to "fall short of the glory of God" in Romans 3:23.

The Glory of God is the display of His attributes, and falling short of the glory of God is when mankind misrepresents or distorts the attributes of God.

Summary

In this episode, I discuss John 1:1 and why the last phrase should be translated, "and the Word was God". The Jehovah's Witnesses translate that phrase, "and the Word was a god". I explain some basics of Biblical Greek, talk about Colwell's Rule, and then point to John 1:1a and John 1:3 as a reference to the eternality of the Word. I also discuss Mark 2:28 as evidence the Jehovah's Witnesses New World Translation (NWT) is inconsistent in it's translation process.

I share my basic approach when first speaking to a Jehovah's Witness. The strategy is not my own, and is a very common approach by many Christians. It relies on the Bible... go figure!!! Today's episode discusses Jeremiah 31:33-34 quoted by Hebrews 10:15-17. This shows that the Holy Spirit is not an impersonal energy force as Jehovah's Witnesses believe. Next, I discuss John 12:41 compared to Isaiah 6:1-3. This is another set of passages showing the Bible speaks of Jesus as Jehovah.

I give a brief biography of Jacques Lafevre. Then I move onto to explaining why Catholics have statues, images, and relics as part of their worship. Catholics do not "worship" Mary and the Saints. Rather, they "venerate" them. This is explained by Catholics by separating latria and dulia. Latria is service given only to God. Dulia is service which can be given to God, but can also be given to Mary and the Saints. I argue this distinction of latria and dulia is not Biblical. I then share some prayers offered to Mary.

SummaryThe Roman Catholic Church teaches the Last Supper, Jesus on the cross, and Catholic Mass are all the same sacrifice. Matthew 5, Matthew 12, 1 Corinthians 3, and Hebrews 12. With each passage, I want the listener to ask, is the Catholic interpretation Exegesis or Eisegesis?

ResourcesExegesis vs. Eisegesis

"Exegesis, in short, is to dig out from a passage what it inherently is stating. Eisegesis, on the other hand, is the approach of interpreting passages by reading into them a particular belief that is not at all evident or clear."

SummaryPope Francis is the current Roman Pontiff. He has been one of the most controversial Popes to hold that office over the past few centuries. His writings have caused confusion, even among the Cardinals in the Roman Catholic Church. Further, he contradicts the clear teaching of Scripture by promoting a "follow your conscience" Gospel message.

SummaryA discussion of the claims of Vatican 1's interpretation of John 21, versus an alternate interpretation that this is speaking of Peter being restored by Jesus after denying Christ 3 times. Which one is more consistent with the Gospel according to John and the rest of the Bible?

John 21:15-19When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Mark 2:1-12(Mark 2:1–12, ESV) And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”

SummaryRoman Catholics will use verses in the Bible which include the word "Tradition" as a defense for their own position. That is, that the full truth of God is found through the Roman Catholic Church through the written Scriptures and the Oral Apostolic Traditions which were passed down in the Church. Is it an accurate interpretation of Scripture to assume "Tradition" in the Bible means the same thing as what Roman Catholics say "Tradition" is today?

SummaryThe Biblical "Canon" refers to the list of books that are Scripture. Roman Catholics say Protestants wouldn't even know what books are Scripture without the "Tradition" of the Roman Catholic Church. How do Protestants know which books are Scripture? Does "Sola Scriptura" allow the Protestant to know the canon. I argue that if Scripture is from God, then He will reveal Scripture to us. God does not need the Roman Catholic Church in order to communicate truth to His people.

SummaryThe Apocrypha, also called Deuterocanonical books by Catholics, are extra books included in the Roman Catholic Old Testament, but not part of the Protestant Old Testament. In this episode, I discuss the reasons I do not believe the Deuterocanonical books are Sacred Scripture. These writings give us historical information and are generally useful, but they are not to be used as Holy Scripture. The Roman Catholic Council of Trent in 1546 says they are Scripture. Do we have to believe the Roman Catholic Church just because they say so?

SummaryI believe justification is by faith alone. It is the gift of God, where the righteousness of Jesus Christ is imputed to sinners by faith. Nothing we can do, even in a state of grace, can earn any aspect of our salvation. Ephesians 2:8 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God," But what about James 2:24? "You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone." How can these 2 concepts be reconciled?

SummaryI briefly overview the Roman Catholic idea of justification. Then I share some history of Martin Luther, leading up to his discovery of the Bible's true meaning of the "righteousness of God". Our righteousness is imputed to us because of the perfect work on Jesus Christ. Our eternal punishment for sin was paid by Jesus on the cross, but His life of perfect obedience is positive righteousness also reckoned to our account. We stand before God and He declares us righteous, not because of our own good works, but because of the works of Jesus Christ.

SummaryThis begins our long series on Roman Catholicism vs Protestantism. It all starts with justification. How is sinful man made right with God? For Roman Catholics, it is faith plus works. For Protestants, it is by faith alone. I discuss the Roman Catholic methods for attaining justification. This includes baptism to wash away Original Sin, but also includes Penance or Confession for the forgiveness of future sins. I also discuss Indulgences and the Treasury of Merit. The corrupt selling of indulgences was the inspiration for Martin Luther to pen his famous 95 Theses.

C.S. Lewis: “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.”

SummaryI discuss alternate theories for the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and why I do not find them convincing. This episode is highly dependent on the information from the previous episode so please listen to Part 1 first. (Who would have thought???)

SummaryI share the "Minimal Facts Argument" proposed by Dr. Gary Habermas and Dr. Mike Licona as the foundational evidence for my belief Jesus was raised from the dead. These "Minimal Facts" are well accepted among New Testament scholars, even those scholars who are not Christians. After stating the facts, I explain how they arrived at those facts, and I close the episode talking about what Jesus resurrection means for Christians in eternity.

Minimal Facts1. Jesus died by crucifixion. 2. His disciples had experiences, as individuals and groups, in which they believed they saw the risen Jesus. 3. Jesus’ resurrection was preached from the very beginning of Christianity, and his disciples were willing to die. 4. Paul, initially an enemy of Christianity, also had an experience in which he believed he saw the risen Jesus, and this changed his life.

How can God show love and mercy without compromising His Holiness? A perfect judge must always be just. Because of our sin, we all deserve the justice of God. In the Old Testament, we learn our sin can only be covered in the way God provides. In this episode, I discuss the Passover and the Day of Atonement as Old Testament symbols giving us a picture of what Jesus will be in the New Testament.

This episode could be considered "part 2" of the previous episode. We deserve God's judgment, yet through Jesus, He is both "the just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus".

Have you ever thought, "Eternal punishment in hell seems pretty severe for telling a few lies and disobeying your parents"? Me too!

In this episode, I talk about God's Judgment and share my journey in discovering why God's judgment is necessary and often misunderstood. The basic outline is this:

  1. God's judgment is necessary.
  2. I underestimate God's view of sin.

We like the idea of people being punished for wronging us. When people wrong us, and seem to get away with it, we hate that. The good news is that God sees all and will punish those who wrong us. The bad news is that we have wronged others and therefore deserve punishment as well.

I also explain how God's judgment and wrath are an outflowing of His holiness and love. Why can't God just be a God of love and mercy, without justice and punishment?

God's judgment seems harsh because I often underestimate God's view of sin.

  • I underestimate God's value.
  • I underestimate God's Holiness.

Why do I believe God exists? I compare atheism and theism, and then present the Moral Argument for God.

Every human seems to know there are fundamental moral truths all humans are responsible to obey. If these objective moral laws are violated, humans feel they have the right to say to the violator, "You are wrong". Here are the basics of the Moral Argument for God:

  1. If objective moral laws exists, then God exists.
  2. Objective moral laws do exists, therefore, God exists.

Basically, laws require a Law Giver.

I address some arguments presented by atheists as to why these moral laws may exists, and show the atheists' inconsistencies in their beliefs.

Welcome to Bear Christianity!

In this episode, I explain the reason for starting this podcast and what to expect in future episodes.

Inspired by C.S. Lewis' book, Mere Christianity, I challenged myself to investigate why I believe what I believe.

but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, (1 Peter 3:15, ESV)
