Rev. Dr. Matthew Williams preaches on finding hope in the wilderness: "The wilderness is different for everyone. But the heart and gut feelings are the same. Estranged families and broken relationships are wilderness areas. Those who struggle with dependency and their families wander in the wilderness. Those who are victims to gun violence, who lack affordable housing, and who are victims to exploitation seem to perpetually dwell in the wilderness. The wilderness is different for everyone but we all experience it. Jesus was tempted while he fasted and prayed in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. Each time he was tempted by the devil, he responded with the words of God. We, too, respond with the words of God. Herein lies our hope."

It was not the mission of Jesus to be poised on a mountain and above the people. It was his mission to be among people in their everyday lives. After the Transfiguration, Jesus makes an exodus back down the mountain. Jesus is indeed the bread of life and the cup of salvation, but he couldn’t take staying on the mountain and pressing the repeat button on “this is my son, with whom I am well pleased.” He knew he had to leave the mountain to engage the world. Rev. Dr. Matthew Williams preaches at the 8:30 a.m. service at Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, FL on 2/19/23.

"In Matthew 5:21-37, Jesus challenges the traditional understanding of the law by emphasizing the importance of not only following the letter of thelaw, but also the spirit of it. He teaches that anger is equivalent to murder, lust is equivalent to adultery, and that it is essential to avoid breaking thelaw and actively seek to live a righteous life. True righteousness goes beyond just preventing sinful actions but encompasses attitudes and thoughts too!Strive for a higher living standard, one marked by love, peace, and righteousness! "Rev. Dr. Matthew Williams preaches at the liturgical service at Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, FL.

"When the world asks Christians the question, “Who are you?” the Church can respond with the answer, “We are the baptized.” We have buried our lives of being slaves of sin and the world and have been born anew and set afire by the Holy Spirit. We have risen to new life in Christ, we are claimed, we are spirit-filled, and we are set free. We are the people who have joined in the baptism of Jesus - and Jesus alone is our teacher, who came to the world but was not of it.

This coming Sunday is the day in the church year where we remember our Baptisms and reclaim the promises of God in our lives. It is a day where we recommit to live our lives in the primary identity of who we are - the baptized. It is a day when we receive once again the gift and empowerment of the Holy Spirit."

"As Luke often does, we read this week of an upsetting of the status quo of society. Our general assumptions that the rich are inherently good or worthy and the poor are inherently bad or unworthy are completely reversed in the telling of this story and most of Luke’s gospel. The compassion and work of justice on behalf of the poor is a clear instruction in this story; we must follow Jesus’s commands and listen when he speaks.”

"By God’s grace we can plan and vision for the future with enthusiasm and hope, since we trust that we shall be a part of the future; when his kingdom shall come in all of its fullness. Together, we serve God in all of God’s goodness and we trust God to meet our each and every need."

“Just as in the ancient world, we live in the in-between where myriad religions and belief systems surround us and we live according to powers and law that we do not create. The world wants us to choose yet Paul continually seems to reject this dualistic way of thinking, while also not wholesale buying into the ways of the world. How to find that balance? Jesus, the only mediator between God and humanity.”

"As followers of Christ, we have been found by God. Thus, we are on a mission. We see all people as valuable, fearfully and wonderfully made, by God. Most of us, at one time or another, were that lost sheep that is mentioned in this week’s Gospel Lesson. Broken, lost, afraid. And a good shepherd came along named Jesus. He picked us up, and carried us to safety."

"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?' the psalmist asks. It can be unsettling for us that God knows us through and through, and that God formed our inmost parts and knit us together. The psalmist speaks of a love that is so deep, so vast, so wide, and immeasurable, that it certain ways it does leave us speechless."

“Most of us have been fortunate to live in a Christian world that requires very little of us. For most of us, Christianity has been about a social identity rather than a conviction. We have rarely had to give up much to be part of the squad. However, Jesus’s strongest words about being a disciple are here in this passage from Luke. His point might not be about setting some high standard for following him; it might be to encourage us that when we face adversity, we look for him rather than anything else in our lives."

Rev. Bryant Manning preaches on Luke 14: 25-33 at the contemporary SUN Service at Trinity United Methodist Church on September 4, 2022.

"In this week’s Gospel Lesson, Luke the gospel writer is being hospitable toward us by calling us to participate in this parable, nudging us to extend God’s hospitality throughout our community and our world. When we dine together, we not only share food but we share who we are. We find God’s loving humility in that we have been welcomed, loved, and accepted, and we are sent from the table to carry God’s humble message of love to the world."

Rev. Dr. Matthew M. Williams preaches on Luke 14:1, 7-14 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, FL on August 28, 2022.

“It is easy for a group of people to say they are a welcoming bunch. How many church signs and emails have we seen that say something like “All are welcome!” or “Everyone invited!”? Many churches are as faithful as they can be, and many have come to know Christ through the hospitality of churches. Still, Jesus reminds us that a true welcoming heart requires all walls to break down, all expectations to lift, and we humble ourselves for all others to feel included.”

In our Lenten Study this week entitled Savior, Magrey DeVega offers us this centering theme for understanding how to live our lives for Jesus:

“This is how we know love,” we read in John’s first epistle. “Jesus laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sister. . . . Little children, let’s not love with words or speech but with action and truth” (vv. 3: 16, 18).”

Join us this Sunday as we learn to live into what it truly means to love one another with the love of Jesus!

"In John’s letter to early Christians he says, “From the beginning you have heard the message, we should love one another.” When I was a child I remember walking through the woods with my grandfather. He would say to me, “Step where I step.” This was his way of setting an example for me. I believe he did this as a moral example too. What does it mean for us to set or leave an example for others? Is being an example always intentional? How is it sacrificial? Join us this Sunday for our Lenten Series “Getting Cross” as what explore it means to be a moral example." - Rev. Neal Avirett

"This Sunday, we will continue our Sermon Series entitled Savior. Our theme this Sunday will be Jesus and Freedom, focusing on the stories in Luke and Acts of Jesus claiming his authority in the temple and Paul and Silas experiencing their freedom from the chains of a prison cell. We will explore the Biblical view of what Jesus accomplished on the cross and how sin sometimes holds us hostage and imprisoned by a captor who is beyond our control. Join us this Sunday as we explore how Jesus saves us by giving his life on the cross as a Ransom to set us free!"

"There’s a southern expression when someone is angry, it’s called “getting cross.” Sometimes the loudest voices define Christ’s dying on the cross as satisfying God’s anger towards sin.
