Guest Nicole shares with us her early desires to give back to adoptee community, how she think she wanted to search for her biological family and the point in time when she realized the moment was now.
Nicole is a domestic, transracial adoptee born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She grew up knowing she was adopted. Her father, a decorated Marine turned Catholic priest adopted her after she had been left with him when she was three years old. Mother’s Day has always been particularly difficult for Nicole, having been raised by a single Father, it defined the fact that she did not fit in.
Early in her marketing career, Nicole joined the adoption community through volunteer work with Adoption Network Cleveland, a non-profit that supports everyone touched by adoption. After serving on the special events committee, Nicole was asked to join the Board of Directors. Through this work, she accepted adoption as a “complex, lifelong, intergenerational journey with ongoing impact for all whose lives are touched by it.” This epiphany helped her realize her feelings of pain, confusion and self-doubt were a natural part of the adoptee journey – and inspired her to dive into the work of healing. Nicole spent years on what she calls her journey of self-discovery, working to understand how being abandoned and adopted shaped her thought patterns, decisions and relationships.
This journey inspired her to share her truth, validate and uplift her fellow adoptees. In 2019, she launched her blog and social media platforms, “The Adoptee In Me - a place to share the journey of self-discovery.” Since then Nicole has shared her lessons learned about identity, change, loss and love, aiming to inspire reflection and conversation to inspire adoptees to embrace their inner adoptees. She is also a member of the Fireside Adoptees leadership team.
A few years ago, Nicole embarked on a new chapter of her adoptee journey to find the mother who left her behind – and that is the focus of this conversation. The search began with her original birth certificate, involved multiple third-party organizations, and lasted much longer than anticipated. Laurie is a domestic adoptee. She was placed in her adopted family at around one month old. She came with some health issues, she had a club foot and eye problems. She was the third adopted child to join the family, she joined a sister and brother, none biologically related. At age 25 she found her bio mom, since then the relationship has been a rollercoaster of emotion. For 20 years Laurie tried to build a relationship with a man she thought was her bio dad. After taking a DNA test, she discovered the truth. Another man was her bio dad. Finding him was easy, but sadness came as he rejected her because of differences in beliefs. In all, Laurie has developed rich relationships with a couple of new siblings. She doesn't regret the search, but wished she had been educated on the many emotional ups and downs this process can take.

Guest Amy shares how the longing to find and meet biological family did not manifest until later in life. Growing up she was surrounded by a loving and accepting adopted family; and she felt content with the situation. When Emma Stevens learned her new next-door neighbor was a psychologist, she innocently asked about how to find a therapist for her own issues. Dr. Carol Brenner decided to accept her as a patient. Against a backdrop of the Laguna Beach Fire, the insidious drama unfolds as Emma finds herself enmeshed in an unhealthy dependency on her therapist, who not only fostered this dependence but also used it to dominate and control her.
Emma has an undergraduate degree in journalism and has completed master’s level course work in psychology, specializing in Marriage, Family, and Child counseling. She has two adult children and two cat children who she adores.

Wandering Tree welcomes the Sibling to the show. The Sibling is one of Lisa Ann's three paternal biological sisters, a domestic adoptee from Baby Scoop era and an adopter of three in the late 1990's. Host Lisa Ann and The Sibling connected via their shared DNA match on Ancestry.com in 2019 and started to build out their current relationship from there. It was a virtual roller coaster from the beginning, but through the years, the two have built a great foundation of shared adoptee understanding and strength.
In this episode, Sibling discusses a bit of her own adoption story but quickly dives deeply into her experience of becoming an adopter. She shares everything on how the children came to them, what were some of the most difficult decisions to make to protect their future and how adopters need to enter into this life choice with eyes and hearts wide open.
With all the discussion in the media regarding abortion and adoption positioned as an alternative, the previously recorded session could not have been more appropriate for availability this week. My continued encouragement is to not take a side per se, but to engage by asking questions and listening. The beautiful thing about humankind is we do not have to agree or see it through the same lens. We don’t even have to agree on the content, context or account of the information.
Breaking this topic down a bit further, point blank, adoption is not simple! You see in the space where the response is to position adoption as a no brainer alternative I advocate we don’t take the bait.
Please continue to step back, find an adoptee and talk to them about their lived experience. There are millions of them out there who can discuss the reality of how adoption can be great, in the middle or horrific.

Guest Mary shares the many ups and downs on the years of search for her birth mother, how the longing to find and meet her became a cycle associated with birthdays and holidays and how she never gave up. We listen as Mary talks about the first planned visit to the final goodbye of the woman she was destined to connect with all in the right timing.
A little about Mary:
As a mom of four and an adoptee, Mary envisioned meeting her birth mother for as long as she can remember. Her story begins as a teen and through many unexpected hurdles and closed doors, her primal pursuit eventually grants her what she’s always been hopeful for. A meeting with her birth mother. The meeting was not what she ever imagined and the surprises that accompanied this meeting truly tested her belief of self worth.
The lessons learned through the process of Mary’s search paved a way for self awareness and growth into adulthood but not without many questions and concerns for herself and other adoptees who may be searching and reuniting.
Mary has spent the last several years sharing her story in the public eye by speaking to groups of people about the importance of adoption and its lifelong effects on adoptees as well as education about the benefits of open adoption and involvement of the birth mothers.
Mary loves to bring hope, education, and knowledge to all people involved in adoptions. She enjoys speaking to potential adoptive parents, foster parents, birth mothers and other adoptees. Mary is working on her first book and continues to enjoy her speaking career locally and virtually across the country. Mary currently resides in the DC area.

Neither of us really knew what to expect when it came to having a conversation on the topic of adoption from our differing viewpoints. It was a new experience for me to be talking to a first mother who was not my own; and for Mary to speak to an adoptee not her own.Â
The end result is this fantastic episode on just how hard it was to be a pregnant teen and how the situation was handled with little regard to her own feelings and mothering desires.Â
