Welcome to Getting Under The Surface, episode 10.
WHAT THIS EPISODE IS ABOUT
Today we’ll be talking with a long-time colleague and brain guru, Mark Brady, Ph.D., who I met over a decade ago when I was writing a blog called Daddy Brain. Back then, I interviewed Mark about topics like children’s brain development and positive and negative forms of discipline.
As you may have guessed, today’s topic is brain-centric, and it’s an important one: it’s all about trauma.
Discussion includes:
MORE ABOUT MARK BRADY, Ph.D.
Mark is a transpersonal neurobiologist, neuroscience educator, and recent throat cancer survivor. He spent 10 years at The Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, one of the nation’s premier think tanks (according to him: “stalking behavioral scientists in their natural habitat, undercover as the maintenance man!”). He is also the prize-winning author of a number of books, magazine articles and academic papers and has published The Flowering Brain blog regularly for 14 years.

In this episode of Getting Under The Surface, we'll be exploring — and defining — analog user experience by telling the story of Juan's Food Cart in New York City.
Although this episode is less than 10 minutes long, it's packed with insights as to how a small food cart relates directly to your website, business and relationship development.

I often find when people I don’t know try to “connect” with me on LinkedIn, they send a sales pitch just moments after I accept them into my network.
Nobody likes to be sold, not even the people doing the hardcore selling. But the quest for more business — especially if an organization is struggling through a pandemic — can leave professionals blind to the fact that they are essentially walking up to a complete stranger and proposing marriage — not even knowing their name.
This is when selling becomes "smelling."
And it can happen anywhere — on social media, your website, blog, or in the analog world. Avoid it, just as you would an expired container of milk.
In this episode of GUTS, we’ll talk about an alternative to smelling — the art of relationship building.

In this episode of GUTS we’ll be talking with Camille Gerrick — an artist, mom and business owner dealing with chronic health issues.
Topics Tackled Today Include:
More About Camille:
Camille is a neurodivergent artist living in Charlottesville, VA. While her Narcolepsy and ADHD present challenges to running a business (and doing all the normal things grown-ups are supposed to do), she prefers to think of these conditions as her artistic superpowers! Narcolepsey causes her to experience colorful hallucinations during the fuzzy state of awareness between wake and sleep, and ADHD allows her to hyper-focus on the creative process and turn these waking dreams into reality.
Growing up in the 80's & 90's influenced Camille's love of shapes, patterns, and color — especially rainbows.
Her creative practice, specifically time spent in Flow State, is essential to her well-being, and a key component of managing her chronic health conditions.
Camille is also the mom of two kiddos who keep her busy.

If we have a spouse who's sick, or a parent or child for that matter, we can often feel pressure and responsibility to focus on being a caregiver, and forgo caring for ourselves. This is what happened to me back in 2018.
In this episode I talk about my wife's health issues and how I nearly fell apart until I realized my own self care was a critically important thing I needed to practice. Why? Because if I wasn't OK, how could I possibly take good care of my wife, kids, or clients?
In addition to sharing some of the challenges and emotions I've faced, I also talk about the self-care strategies I've developed over the years. Feel free to try what I've done, or develop strategies of your own. Either way, my goal in sharing is to help you get to a better place than you're currently in — and to let you know that you are not alone.
When we're the caregiver for a loved one, "sucking it up," and just "dealing with it," are philosophies that have no place. They don't work, and they don't address our needs, feelings and mental health — which are important, too!
Some of the MANAGEABLE, SUSTAINABLE strategies I talk about are:
- Meditation
- Mindfulness
- Acceptance
- Exercise
- Joining a mens' group
- Seeing a qualified therapist
I hope the episode helps, and I wish you and your loved one well.
