This podcast focuses on the 300 nominees for the AFI 100 Years...Passions list that failed to make the cut. I will be reviewing these films along with special guests and we will discuss their overall quality, whether they qualify as a romance and whether they deserve to be considered one of the most romantic films of all time.
I was absolutely chuffed when both Eoin Daly and Chels Eichholz agreed to talk about Funny Face on the podcast. Both guests need no introduction, as they have both made notable appearances on previous episodes of the podcast. However, it's worth noting that they're perfectly suited to the task of analysing this classic Audrey Hepburn vehicle. For someone like myself, who had never seen the film before, it was a real relief to have two experts leading the way.

The lovely Emily Malek agreed to return to the podcast in order to discuss 1948's The Pirate. We were thrilled to chat about the significant cultural legacies left behind by stars Gene Kelly and Judy Garland, while also addressing some of the career difficulties that Vincente Minnelli faced at this time. What a joy to finally talk about a good movie!

Jackie DeStefano and I face real struggles when it comes to keeping on topic and this is yet another episode where we didn't really talk about the putative subject of the podcast. The wonderful Matthew Anderson joined me to discuss this early-1990s cult classic. As a Tarantino skeptic, I wasn't all that excited about the prospect of watching yet another violent crime drama about a bunch of hoods who suffer from loggerhead. Fortunately, Matthew is something of a film bro so we found that we were not in agreement about the films strengths and weaknesses.

This week Emily and I are coming at you with a spiritual sequel to one of our previous episodes. Being a Hemingway aficionado, she was well-suited to discussing the 1932 adaptation of A Farewell to Arms, one of his most critically acclaimed novellas. We certainly had more positive things to say about it than we initially expected and can both readily admit that it represents a significant improvement on For Whom the Bell Tolls. This is also the closest we'll ever get to picking apart Helen Hayes's erratic film career, so you can look forward to hearing us break down her lack of consistent success in Hollywood.

One of this podcast's closest friends makes his triumphant return in this episode and, as often happens, he found himself discussing an incest-tinged murder plot. We simply adored Myrna Loy and William Powell and found ourselves yearning for the good old days, a time in which films like The Thin Man were a dime-a-dozen in Hollywood. Longtime listeners will also be glad to hear that Christof took the opportunity to reel off his list of his favourite actresses of the 1930s. Naturally, Marlene Dietrich makes an appearance.

Valentina and I teamed up to talk about a film that can only really be appreciated by devout Catholics. We don't believe that little boys can be 'saved' by saintly women who kiss them on the cheek and could barely hold ourselves back from laughing when this film attempted to convince us that miracles can occur. Fortunately, we had a lot to say about the general state of actressing in 1990s Britain and Neil Jordan's unusual career trajectory.

The lovely Ronaldo Sosa was on hand to chat about one of Stanley Kubrick's least-loved films. Generally viewed as a compromised project, Lolita (1962) initially promised to bring one of the most controversial novels ever written to the screen. The finished product proved to be far less salacious than audiences expected it to be and censors seemingly prevented Kubrick from fully realising his vision. We went long on Shelley Winters's magnificent performance and questioned why a film about a manipulative pedophile even made it onto the list of contenders.

This week I had the pleasure of chatting about The Big Parade, a mid-1920s smash hit that has been lost to the sands of time. This episode will be eye-opening for those of you who have listened to the Women InSession podcast, as Amy and I find ourselves without Kristin Battestella's guidance. We were left to engage in a lengthy, frequently digressive discussion about a film that aggressively signals that it was made in 1959. On the one hand, it appears hesitant to ruffle too many feathers and holds back from depicting sexual activity in graphic detail. On the other hand, it does take a stand against creepy parents who pressure their children into remaining 'pure' until they get married. We ultimately found ourselves praising this highly melodramatic soap opera, but had to admit that it's no From Here to Eternity.

This week I had the pleasure of discussing a Hitchcock classic with Giorgi, a European sophisticate with a deep knowledge of the cinema of the 1940s. We were able to delve into the film's troubled production and considered why the finished product ends up seeming a little bit half-baked. Naturally, we also found time to chat about some of Giorgi's favourite actresses of the decade.

I was absolutely chuffed when Matthew informed me that he would be willing to chat about this Billy Wilder classic on the podcast. He had never seen it before and, as someone who isn't especially familiar with Wilder's oeuvre, he was able to digest this film's contents in a relatively unique manner. We were both utterly charmed by Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, but poor Marilyn Monroe left us feeling a tad disappointed.

We finally got around to discussing this stone-cold mid-1980s classic and found that we had a lot to say about Michael Douglas's unusual career path. It was presented to the American public as Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) for gals and became a major hit in its year of release. The film's contemporary popularity has also been fuelled by its seeming omnipresence in video stores throughout the 1980s and 1990s. It's fair to say that it's most interesting as an adaptation of romantic comedy tropes that were first brought to the screen in the mid-1920s and we found time to talk about some of the old-fashioned pictures that it takes inspiration from.

Long-time listeners will be aware of the fact that I have a very complicated relationship with the works of director King Vidor. He was all over the map politically but did achieve the herculean feat of polishing Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, a veritable turd, into a highly entertaining melodrama. This week, I had the opportunity to discuss his most popular film, The Crowd, with renowned film critic Eoin Daly. We were deeply moved by this film's nuanced portrayal of dysfunctional family dynamics and the grieving process. Listen to us gush about this unqualified masterpiece for almost an hour!

This week we had the unique displeasure of discussing a film that very few people have heard of, let alone watched. It features one of Liza Minnelli's most celebrated performances and ruminates on late-1960s gender politics, in the style of The Graduate (1967), but it's also guilty of romanticising stalking. Sam Meltzer joined me in breaking down the rapturous critical response that Minnelli's star turn received, in addition to questioning whether Wendell Burton was a real human being.

This abomination of a film was inflicted upon the world in 1951. It's pro-slavery and suggests that threatening a woman with rape is just a seduction technique. It's also really, really dull.

The talented and amazing Kristin Battestella joined me to discuss this fairly obscure Shakespeare adaptation. We also found time to reflect on Under Capricorn, Kristin's surprising dissatisfaction with Claudette Colbert, Leslie Howard's work as a spy, John Barrymore being awful and when Rita Hayworth's career took off. Surprisingly, we were somewhat opposed when it came to the film at hand. Norma Shearer causes me to take unreasonable stances.

Manish Mathur brought gleeful enthusiasm to our discussion of this infamous flop and caused me to think about this film in a different light. We had a lot of fun talking about some of the more extravagant aspects of the production, the times where it seemed like Liz and Dick were bored and the downfall of the Biblical Epic genre. He also shared his appreciation of some of the most famous actresses of the 1960s and Liz herself received a mention.

We finally got to discuss Liz's first Academy Award nomination on the show. Unfortunately, that involved talking about a racist, godawful mess. I was joined by the eloquent, sassy Chelsea Eiccholz and she entertainingly ripped this terrible film apart. We attacked the underuse of Agnes Moorehead, the unnecessary length and Montgomery Clift's deer in headlights expression.
We also found some time to discuss her favourite 1950s actresses and it's no surprise that Audrey Hepburn showed up on the list.

Alex and I chatted about this largely forgotten romantic melodrama in which Liz is torn between two controlling men. One is obsessed with her and the other is totally fixated on his music studies. There were a lot of reasons why this one flopped at the box office and we got into the bumps in the road that Liz faced during the mid-1950s. We also briefly discussed the fact that this film never feels like it is set in Switzerland and question most of Louise Durant's decisions.

The phenomenally talented David S. Caballero joined me to talk about the first of two 1954 films that will be covered in this miniseries.
We talked about the unfair vilification of Donna Reed, the fact that this film could be set in any relatively large European city and why we wouldn't leave a small child in the care of an alcoholic who was partly responsible for the death of his wife.

We start off our very exciting foray into the wonderful world of Liz Taylor, with this dreary costume drama. Sadly, Liz and a marvellous Joan Fontaine are sidelined in favour of podcast nemesis Robert Taylor. I was lucky enough to have an extraordinary co-host and he brought a remarkable spirit to his discussion of the jousting scenes. We didn't enjoy this film, but we did have fun talking about it.

My beloved brother joined me to talk about 1976's Rocky. I'll admit that we were both rather combative in this episode and we did end up disagreeing over many different aspects of the film. However, we did find time to ruminate on his hatred of classic films, my resistance to Ryan Reynolds's charms and his rather creepy appreciation of violence.

The extraordinary Ronaldo Sosa joined me to break down the Academy Award nominations. There was much to discuss and Ronaldo brought his typical wit and warmth to his scathing critiques of the Trial of the Chicago Seven. We also touched on Jackson DeStefano's love for 1944's Wilson, Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the Day, Mank's lack of a screenplay nomination and the greatness of Laura Pausini.

The extraordinary Andrew Fraser joined me to discuss 1995's Clueless. Everybody sees it as a classic comedy but Andrew was able to tap into the depth behind the colourful costumes and jokes about fellatio. We both agreed that this film doesn't necessarily receive enough credit from serious critics and endeavoured to right that wrong.

Today I discussed Carrie (1952) with Cláudio Alves. It isn't very widely seen today and neither of us would call it one of William Wyler's masterpieces but it's still a fascinating film. We also found ourselves circling back to Jennifer Jones and doing a deep dive on her career and its intersection with her personal life. There was also some further consideration of Ingrid Bergman, who I seem unable to escape from.

There was a lot to touch on when it came to Laura, from Shelby Carpenter's complicated relationships with various women to Gene Tierney's mercurial presence in 1940s cinema. My enormously knowledgeable and talented guest had a lot of theories about the major themes present within the story and he also had a lot to contribute when it came to the supposedly 'romantic' elements of this film. We probably had the most fun discussing his list of his favourite actresses of the 1940s. I tried to explain my complicated relationship with Ingrid Bergman.

We dove into the silent cinema of the 1910s with True Heart Susie. It's gorgeously crafted and we both found time to lavish praise on Lillian Gish but it isn't without its imperfections.

I had the pleasure of discussing this popular 1997 romantic comedy with Gabe Guarin. We were on the same page when it came to this film and the depiction of Melvin Udall's treatment of women. We also reflected on the 1997 Best Actress lineup, Brooks's various trademarks as a director and one particularly troubling scene that happens to involve a blonde receptionist.

My darling cousin has joined me today to talk about this enormously popular Julia Roberts vehicle. We discussed Roberts's stormy 1991, Hugh Grant's limited range, the dangers of celebrity culture and Roger Michell's bold directorial choices. I also apologise for the awful, hoity-toity voice that I adopt when recording these.

For the first episode of this podcast, I discussed 1932's Trouble in Paradise with, noted Academy Awards enthusiast, Eoin Daly. We went deep on why Kay Francis is largely forgotten today, the wonder of Miriam Hopkins in the many different phases of her career and the surprising complexity of the relationship dynamics in this romantic comedy.
