Hey ya'll! It's been a pretty tough year for me & many - I thought the 2nd year of Covid would bring more familiarity, but it feels instead like this year was riddled with even more stress, anxiety, fear & uncertainty.

I've always found my time and conversations with Shiao helpful and enlightening - which is no surprise given that she's most beloved for her speeches in parliament, as well as her thought leadership and work with organisations and communities.

We sat down to process and reflect on the past 20 months of Covid season, how it's impacted us as individuals and collectively, my personal journey through disconnection & transition, and we inch the conversation forward with hope, connection & clarity.

If you're an entrepreneur who understands the struggle, or you're looking for a meaningful conversation in these pandemic times, this episode is pure gold!

Some of the things we talk about in this conversation:

  • The good, bad and unraveling of life/pandemic coping strategies

  • The midlife crisis (those 35 years & above included!)

  • What it looks like to move from disconnection to connection

  • Why posting a lot on social media/Instagram or meeting lots of people won’t resolve your loneliness

  • Why having just 1 group of friends or community may not meet all your needs

We also talk about family and personhood:

  • Why acceptance alone is not enough for developing self worth

  • “You can’t make good choices if you have low self worth”

  • Why some homes and family dynamics are “not safe” and what we can do about it

  • Creating safety for yourself, belonging & re-parenting yourself

  • How ‘coming home to yourself’ can help you to better engage with your literal home

  • What living out your purpose looks like in good times, rough times, and seasons of change

  • How to be a powerful person despite our current challenges

  • What boundaries mean and the elements needed for a good boundary conversation

In this episode, I interview Linda Tang (Co-founder of WeBarre) and Alex Loh (ex national water polo player to podcast host & consultant, Novothor/Avantir Wellness, YOLO run series Southeast Asia, Core Collective wellness center, Co-founder of Kampung Collective, & now Aviary & Co) on their personal and business journey in starting various fitness-themed businesses.

We talk about how to create a beautiful, genuine and strong fitness brand as well as community.

This is PART 2 of our episode, and some things we talk about:

  • How and when do you decide to delegate?

  • What are some important things you considered in building a start-up or business?

  • What makes a good fitness or business brand?

  • How do you hold tension with listening to each customer, yet holding your own strong vision of the brand?

  • What does a strong fitness brand and community look like?

And more!

Check out the last episode for PART 1 where Linda gives many practical, clear handles in building her fitness business and in choosing a business partner (do we work with good friends, or not?!), while Alex shares a rich bank of personal experiences and lessons from his non-linear life.

Most powerful thing for me was Alex's personal story navigating a failed business venture, and dealing with the public shaming & failure that came from it.

What is love? Baby don’t hurt me! So glad to share my first podcast collab with dear friends, Shawn & Joshua from the Luan Luan Lai podcast (a legit funny-borderline-questionable Singapore-based comedy podcast)!

In this episode, we bring in their lovely wives and the 4 of them (Shawn + Promise, Joshua + Dawn) take turns to give me marriage and dating advice. Even though each of them are much younger than I am, they’re wise beyond their years!

**Check out their podcast for our other collab episode together, and I share way too much info plus rabak dating stories from my past!

Some things that I ask in this episode:

  • How long did you date before getting married ah? How did you know when things were getting serious?

  • How and why did you decide to get married to THIS person?

  • Have you guys dated other people what were some red flags that made u go, OK, I DO NOT want to spend my life with this person?

  • What is something that you wish you knew about yourself or each other before getting married?

  • What’s some of your biggest differences or arguments in your relationship so far, and how do you guys resolve them?

SOME TRUTH BOMBS:

“The goal is not ZERO conflict, but HEALTHY conflict resolution”

“Unspoken expectations are not real expectations”

“The family and relationships around us affect our expectations and perspectives in relationships more than we know”

I also ask Dawn & Joshua to share their stories and lessons learnt, as Josh battled panic attacks and anxiety through their relationship and marriage. Thanks for openly and bravely sharing your life with me guys!

Check out Josh’s music that came from this difficult but powerful personal journey of his too.

*Zouk has not only been a stomping ground for me and many of us, but a legacy name and a pioneer in the party scene in Singapore and in Asia. Besides simply being the place we would Mambo at on Wednesday or down sour plum shots on Friday nights, what are some lessons we can learn from Zouk's evolution? Can an institution like this be shaken or stirred in a time of crisis?

Where does it face similar and different challenges from other businesses or creatives on the ground like us?*

I personally loved this friendly chat with Zouk Group's CEO, Andrew Li about his personal career journey in getting to where he is today, along with the pivots that he and his team have made in the recent year.

We start off by hearing about Andrew's journey fresh from University where he gets his teeth cut in the lively and demanding world of hospitality, and I ask him how he rose through the ranks so quickly to get to where he's at today.

Being in his 30s, some may find Andrew fairly young as Zouk's CEO, but I quickly see that doesn't mean he's unseasoned or inexperienced, and am quickly inspired by his grit, spirit of excellence and his genuine passion for hospitality.

We also unpack the mindsets, moments and life lessons that have shaped and formed his attitudes and success.

For example, When he moved from UK, to Bangkok, to China and then to Hong Kong, he had to face a decision whether to re-start his career with Four Seasons in Hong Kong by starting from the bottom once again - and thankfully it paid off and paved the way for where he is today.

(Note to self: Life is not linear, and sometimes we do move backwards to go forward.)

Some of my other personal favourite moments in this interview:

  • Andrew shares some of the key values that matter to him in deciding whether to take a job opportunity or work under someone

  • Andrew's personal routines (he sleeps at 9.30pm every weeknight!!)

  • Zouk opening in Vegas and we bond over our experiences there of world-class hospitality

In the last part of the interview, I hope to give voice and bring in perspective to what's happening on ground. Even as Andrew represents Zouk and an institution of nightlife, I share with Andrew some of the frustrations and sentiments of individuals who's livelihoods have been greatly affected by the current restrictions and closures.

I read out a portion of Adrian Wee (eatmepoptart)'s Facebook post, along with this article and ask him for his response - it's pretty thoughtful.

You guys! This was such a thoughtful and energizing chat with Elliot Lucas Marcell Tan, as we take a deep inside look at his journey from top Singapore YouTube channel Wah Banana & Tree Potatoes, to start-up boss of Start Something (he’s managing a team of 15 now! Omgah!).

What were the humble beginnings of Wah Banana & Tree Potatoes?

How long did it take to get to a million views on YouTube, and how did that change him and life around him?

What is it like to be social media famous? And then, what?

In this episode, we ponder meaningfully about all the social media things – From our love/hate relationship with social media and influence, recalling the first time he went 'viral', being unable to escape the “YouTube funny guy” image, the downsides with being social media famous and recognized, (staying away from) drama in the Singapore YouTube scene, and the creative courage to start something again with his creative business, Start Something Studios.

We also both bond over our experiences in taking the last few years off from the social media circus, and discovering that who we are is more important than anything else we could ever do, or ‘likes’ and ‘views’ that we could achieve.

We hope this episode will give you a real, deeper perspective of social media, understand how we are being shaped & formed by what we consume online, and help us all to become better, purposeful human beings on the internet.

I absolutely loved this conversation with Elliot – no matter how many followers you have or don't have, I hope you'll find it inspiring, relevant and useful!

Excited for you to hear this one! I chat with Reuben Png, who was my design coach and facilitator for a DesignSingapore Council project, and is the Founder of IndegoX, a transformational design consultancy.

He is also an adjunct lecturer with both the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University, an ex-agency guy, and a Co-Founder of Lowercase - a platform for food, music and the arts including theatrical festivals, craft markets, art installations, product launches and other collaborative efforts.

In this episode, Reuben shares with me his personal journey through his creative career, and reflections along the way. I ask him for advice on how I can best do the meaningful marketing work that I wish to do with Zero Copycat Social, and we rant (thoughtfully muse?) about the current state of the content and social media industry, and the changes we wish to see.

Moving on! We also talk about how design thinking can - or can't - help us as we navigate a new era of uncertainty.

We end with me asking Reuben for the one thing or one lesson he'll say to the younger generation of creatives & entrepreneurs, and it totally resonates with me!

TIMESTAMPS:

1:15 I ask Reuben about his colourful creative life and career

2:20 "One of the issues with the Singapore system is that it's black and white - you're either this or that, ie an arts or science student. This is where many creative people like us struggle"

9:40 We discuss our perspectives of what's working and not working anymore in the current state of digital content and the social media industry

12:05 We talk about the need for true rest - rest from bingeing on information, articles, content, reddit, netflix, etc

16:23 I read from a blogpost Reuben wrote & we chat about it - https://medium.com/@reubenpng/my-fight-is-for-culture-more-than-community-10c4d5fd8ac0

19:51 "Routine can be a comfort and an enemy at the same time"

24:51 "How do I balance my practical needs with my creative passion?"

Reuben gives me advice on Zero Copycat Social

35:49 How can design thinking help us navigate uncertainty?

40:15 Trust the process, and let insights emerge. The process is non-linear and messy.

41:34 Design thinking is NOT a workshop. It's never comfortable.

43:18 The fundamental issue with the way we think

44:00 What is one thing or one lesson you'd say to the younger generation of creatives & entrepreneurs?

There is a common saying in the field of neuroscience - "neurons that fire together, wire together". This happens in our brain, for better or worse! What we think about and watch causes thought patterns, also known as "neural trees" in our brain.

The more we think about and watch something, the bigger these neural trees are in our brain and the deeper its roots.

In this 15-min solo episode, I share my own personal story battling an addiction, and how it affected my whole life, relationships and my brain health. I share the science and some tips behind it as well.

I'm happy to share that I've found complete freedom from this addiction to re-discover my best life and creativity, and you can too, if that's what you want!

If you'd like to chat with me about this, you're welcome to DM me on social media.

In this second half of my chat with Rui Qi, we kick off with me asking her about her identity story and experiences as a "third culture kid" or global citizen, living between Singapore & Hong Kong, while also going to college in the US.

We go deeper into conversations and questions around self-worth and identity, and I somewhat hijack this episode by getting unexpectedly emotional and personal.

Do check out the previous episode with Rui Qi first for a bit more context, or listen to this straight up but don't say I didn't warn you!

SO. Excited. To share this first episode with you! Rui Qi is a dear friend of mine, and someone who I would personally call a "heart coach" - she has so much wisdom and understanding about matters of the heart and I'm always blown away by my personal conversations with her.

In this episode, we talk about how we understand and care for our soul (it's not just bubble baths, massages and positive affirmations!), along with our reflections (or should I say deconstructions?) on self worth and success.

Look out for the next episode where we go deeper into conversations of self-worth & identity - which is the second half of this conversation with Rui Qi.
