48,000 University Of California academic workers have been on strike for three weeks fighting for a fair contract. Graduate student workers are also striking in New York City and in the UK. We attended and recorded yesterday’s rally and march of hundreds of striking workers in Oakland, CA. President Biden encouraged congress to pass legislation that would force rail workers to accept the tentative agreements that over 55% of the workers voted to reject them. The next SLAP general meeting is happeningWednesday November 16, 6:15-8pm. In an effort to bring more East Oakland families affected by school closures into the fold, we will have the meeting at Ira Jenkins Community Center(across from Brookfield Elementary), 9175 Edes Ave.
Let's get workers and parents out to this meeting! School closures still loom large, while the possibility of the A's stadium at Howard Terminal has yet to be taken off the table. By next Wednesday we will have clear election results and it will be time to launch into our next moves.

It's important to notice the power of our ranked choice strategy already having an effect in 2 and 6. UAW 2865 Transparency Letter
Dear colleagues, Tldr: We should not accept backroom meetings, even when veiled under the term “side bar”. And in a democratic union, we should be able to be critical of union leadership without being accused of going against strike efforts or of trying to destroy our union. At this point, many of you have been made aware of an email thread that makes evident an internal fissure, if not crisis, in our union. If not, I have copy-pasted what I have been sent at the end of my letter. First, I’m not here to rehash UAW 2865 history. Many of you who have been around for years know (perhaps vaguely) of the precedents. And I know some of you have your own experiences of our union’s internal politics, and I encourage you to respond with these. I am here to comment on the matter at hand, and I can discuss this with anyone at the picket line. We should not accept backroom meetings, even when veiled under the term of “side bar”. One of the strengths of our union is that through the years, we have continued insisting on open bargaining, which means that any bargaining session between our team and the university’s team has been open to everyone. Everyone – students, TAs, profs, everyone – has a right to know what the University is saying and what our team is saying. This transparency helps us be a stronger union, and a stronger union means that we can go to the bargaining table on equal footing with our employer. We can ensure that our elected representatives are fighting for our interests. It helps us build trust amongst each other, it helps us make an informed decision when we do eventually vote on a new contract. And it helps us trust the people we elected, ensuring that the University can’t use divide-and-conquer tactics, or pretend that our union is actually some other entity that acts on its own who we shouldn’t trust. One defense I have heard is that the University of California’s bargaining team wants to be able to discuss certain limitations they have in privacy, away from the ears of the administration. Should we not hear those limitations? We can’t on the one hand fight for transparency on university budgets but then relegate the real conversations about money to an off-the-record ‘sidebar’. One defense is, "well, we'll all be voting on the contract anyways". Sure, but the bargaining teams on both sides decide what that proposal looks like. In other words, we have the power to vote down a contract, but it's up to our electeds to come up with the actual content that we are voting on. "Well, we don't know what was being discussed, it could be innocuous". That's true. Possibly. From this email thread, we don't know. That's the point. Our electeds should simply explain the context and content of what was discussed, and this should be cross-referenced with people who voted against having the off-the-record conversation. Defendants of our campus’ bargaining team members (from what I can tell, other electeds) say that raising this issue is union busting. Union busting is serious, and we should be vigilant of the university doing so. But raising concerns based on facts, such as – you decided to continue having an off-the-record conversation when our union has committed to open bargaining – is not union busting. A classic move that union leaders and staff make when they’ve been cornered by workers is to say that ‘this is union busting’. There were moments I said the same thing when I was a head steward, because I myself believed this. I do not anymore. In a democratic union, we should be able to be critical of union leadership without being accused of going against strike efforts or of trying to destroy our union. Accountable leadership is what makes us a strong union, and it’s what will win us a good contract. So, does this mean we should all just give up the fight for a better contract? No! This is a reason to fight harder. The more electeds see that workers are strong, the more empowered they will feel at the bargaining table. What am I saying? In my experience, elected leaders aren’t “evil”. They aren’t trying to screw you over because they are corrupt and think that the UC is going to hand them a 10k wad of cash. They truly believe that what they are doing is in the best interest of the worker. From the defenses I read, the logic is ‘this is the only way we get x from the University’. In other words, they do not think we are strong enough to impose our own conditions at the bargaining table, so they concede to the University’s conditions. The problem is that we don’t win by allowing ourselves to lose ground to the UC. We need to build more power. We need to make sure we have so much power that we can impose our own conditions. So come to the picket line. Fight for transparency, fight for your contract, fight for a better UC. Demand better from your electeds. Demand better from your boss. In Solidarity, Morganne NB: Union staff cannot be intervening in internal union politics. If a staffer calls you to discuss all this to try and convince you either way, know that they shouldn’t be.

Dockers and dock unions from Oakland to Durban were in discussion two weeks ago. Dockers throughout South Africa had just ended a strike which gained 6% and benefits but, like dockers in Liverpool, had aimed higher. In our last discussion Joseph Dube of RETUSA, Trent Willis and Clarence Thomas, ILWU and many dock workers spoke. Now Oakland dockers are negotiating a new contract knowing that the hopes and strength of dockers internationally are behind them. At the same time there is evidence from South Africa and elsewhere that the bosses are through retrenchments and casualization trying to cut back the wages conceded. How to build effective international solidarity, fight more effectively, and win against privatization, redundancies and casualization? This Saturday, November 12, dockers internationally are returning to discuss these issues; with more dockers internationally invited into the discussions. Increasing interactivity and productivity were part of the promise of web 2.0 - we would be able to meet, work, play with who we want, how we want in a virtual land with a level playing field. Where people seem to spend their time online doing these days is counter-productive and mean, squeezed between thousands of “personalized” ads served directly into our brains. Our weakness seems to be wanting to share our thoughts and ideas and create community for ourselves. Is the ubiquity of advertising and commercialism on the internet just something we have to tolerate or are there non-commercial spaces online that don’t put our data at the center of their business model?

Who does it serve to reduce the causes of U.S. austerity politics and violence. We’ll discuss how fears of a “gerontocracy” can distract from what could be a substantive critical analysis of real, more profound vectors of oppression such as class, racism, sexism and anti-LGBTQ currents. Strikes: NUHW and Rail workers’ labor dispute Is the rail workers’ labor dispute an opening for genuine change? Corporate media seems to think a rail strike has been avoided and the “problem” solved. only 2 of the 10 unions have yet to ratify the deal put together by the Biden Administration. Can we coordinate to show real solidarity and help these workers hold out until we ALL get what we want? I think we could, but we have to try. The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) went on strike on August 15, 2022 to ”make Kaiser fix its mental health care system” The strike is about to go into its 4th week.
According to NUHW.org, Kaiser and the union headed back to the table on Thursday September 8, although as of September 11, there is no additional news on an agreement. Join me as I join picket lines again this coming week,.

According to the union website (NUHW.org) they plan to strike for as “long as it takes to make Kaiser fully staff its clinics and end dangerously long wait times for therapy.
Kaiser is breaking California law and violating clinical standards by making patients wait months just to start therapy sessions and four to eight weeks between appointments. It’s unethical. It’s illegal, and we ask you to support our strike to fundamentally improve access to mental health care at Kaiser.”
