Ep. 52 - Narratives, Nostalgia, & Neuroaffirmative Research (with Mishel Alexandrovsky)

Bruce and Kara sit down with autistic autism researcher Mishel Alexandrovsky to talk about problems with existing research on/about autistic people, diagnostic tools, epistemological framing of autism in the media, and more. For fun, we talk about collections, crayons, and things that elicit nostalgia!

Guest Bio: Mishel Alexandrovsky is an autistic autism researcher at the University of Toronto and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. She is conducting participatory work that critiques cognitive tasks commonly used in autism research. She also collaborates on studies of neuroaffirmative care, camouflaging, and cross-neurotype evaluation. The overarching goal of her research is to improve the understanding of autistic people, and through that, help foster greater acceptance, better supports, and autistic flourishing. Alongside her research, Mishel enjoys curating collections, travelling to new and familiar places, and listening to the same songs on repeat.

Bruce and Kara chat with Julianna Maggrah about Indigenous ways of being, doing, and knowing; her late diagnosis; exploring Indigenous views of autism; thoughts on creativity and expression; and the interplay of all of these topics, together.

Guest Bio: Julianna Maggrah is a 2 Spirit, neurodivergent Indigenous woman born and raised in northern Saskatchewan. Her family were trappers and hunters and loved to live off of the land, and so Julianna was born with a connection to the land. Although she can’t stand the idea of setting traps or hunting, she connects to the land by picking medicines and taking her dog out to roam the forest. Rather than saying she is from the north, Julianna would prefer to say that she is from the land and the stars as her connection is to the spirit of the earth and not a town or city.

As an Indigenous person, she grew up experiencing the effects of generational trauma, which led her to discover the importance of mental health and understanding one’s mind and experiences. She is an advocate for mental health and has made a short documentary about her own struggles with depression and anxiety and has worked with the CBC Creator Network to make mini documentaries about her 2 Spirit journey, searching for her culture, and a guided mindfulness meditation in the forest. Most recently, Julianna wrote an article for CBC about how learning about Indigenous perspectives on autism helped her accept her autism diagnosis.

Julianna studied media arts production at Saskatchewan Polytechnic and interned at MBC radio. Shortly after finishing school, she got a job as a video journalist at CTV. She realized she could combine her desire to help people with her love for creativity and art, and now creates content about subjects that she feels are important.

In 2022, Julianna was selected for CBC and NSI’s New Indigenous Voices Program and she received the Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Medal for her work creating an open space for mental health online. In 2023 she placed second in Red Nation Media’s Native Women Write Pitch Competition. In 2024 she was shortlisted for RBC’s Emerging Indigenous Filmmaker’s Award. She is currently in a production mentorship with Cinema Ascent and is writing a documentary about the spiritual gifts of autism. Julianna has future plans to bridge arts, therapy, and culture to help people heal.

Ep. 46 - Competing needs, Communication, & Community Support

Bruce, Kara, and Maja are back! In the first episode of Season 4, they catch up, share what they’ve been up to, and discuss the need for collective advocacy within the autistic community, as well as some of the associated challenges such as competing needs, stressful environments, immediate access to communication and self-insight. We also talk about the importance of individual narratives and listening to build awareness of the needs of others. Fun mentions that didn’t make the title: Michelin stars, a monkey idiom, and why Bruce doesn’t give standing ovations.

Ep. 45 - Autism Mythbusting, Misdiagnosis, & Math BrainsYour trio of hosts -- Kara, Maja, and Bruce -- discuss the myths that most bother them about autism and their own experiences of emotions processing, empathy, and rejection sensitivity and/or resistance to compliments. Maja makes excellent points about the need for professionals to stay current in the knowledge about presentations of autism (e.g., internalized and externalized) and implications for the school system are discussed. It is a good reminder that diagnostic criteria are working definitions, changing over time, and need to reflect community voices and experiences.Thing(s) of the Day: Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's by John Elder Robisonhttps://www.amazon.ca/Look-Me-Eye-Life-Aspergers/dp/0307396185Howe, S. Bruce and Kara chat with New York Times and international bestselling author, J.D. Barker, who writes suspense thrillers with dashes of horror, crime, mystery, science fiction, and the supernatural. J.D. illuminates us on autistic writing strengths, his process, challenges and benefits of co-writing, and...the suspense is killing us...his connection to Dracula! GUEST BIO: Barker spent the first 14 years of his life in Crystal Lake, Illinois. A staunch introvert, he was rarely seen without a book in hand, devouring both the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series by the age of six before moving on to classics such as the works of Dickens and Twain. The discovery of Shelley, Stoker and Poe fueled a fire and it wasn’t long before he was writing tales of his own which he shared with friends and family. These early stories centered around witches and ghosts thought to inhabit the woods surrounding their home.

While in college, one of his writing assignments found its way into the hands of Paul Gallotta of Circus Magazine. Gallotta reached out to Barker to join the staff of 25th Parallel Magazine. By 1991 was Barker interviewing celebrities for Seventeen, TeenBeat, and other publications. In 1992, Barker syndicated a small newspaper column called Revealed, centered around the investigation of haunted places and supernatural occurrences.

He worked as a book doctor and ghostwriter, helping others finetune manuscripts. He continued until 2012 when he wrote his first novel, Forsaken.

Stephen King read portions of Forsaken prior to publication and granted Barker permission to use the character of Leland Gaunt of King’s Needful Things. Forsaken ranked #2 on Audible, #44 on Amazon US, #2 on Amazon Canada, and #22 on Amazon UK; was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award - Best Debut Novel; and won a handful of others including a New Apple Medalist Award.

After reading Forsaken, Bram Stoker’s family reached out to Barker and asked him to co-author a prequel to Dracula utilizing Bram’s original notes and journals. The novel, Dracul, has been bought by Paramount and Andy Muschietti (IT, Mama) is attached to direct.

Barker's books have appeared on bestseller lists around the world. He is also a frequent collaborator with James Patterson.

Barker splits his time between Englewood, FL, and New Castle, NH, with his wife, Dayna, and their daughter, Ember.

Ep. 37 - Neurodivergent Exercise Myths, Motivations, & Joyful Movement (with Micaelah Barb)

Kara and Maja are joined by our guest, ADHD habit & wellness coach Micaelah Barb, to talk about neurodivergence, exercise, and long-term motivation -- and why it doesn't always work the way you've probably been told. We discuss why starting and sticking to exercised routines can be so hard for autistic and ADHD folks, with some personal examples thrown in! We also dive into some of the mental barriers and the myths regarding physical health and appearance, and how we might make exercise fun.GUEST BIO: Micaelah Barb is a fitness and habit coach that empowers individuals to build consistent habits in fitness, nutrition, and daily life. After getting diagnosed with ADHD late in life, she's worked to adapt typical fitness strategies and advice to be more accessible for other neurodiverse individuals. Her approaches focus on releasing guilt, embracing flexibility, and building practical systems for lasting change.

Ep. 35 - Cathartic Consumption, Capacity for Consumption, & K-Pop!The third episode of Season is the second part of our look at artistic expression. In this episode, Kara, Maja and Bruce talk about the consumption of Art(s) of all types, and how an autistic consumption may (or may not) differ from a neurotypical consumption. In this wide-ranging discussion, they bring unique perspectives to their own consumption of art, as well as acknowledging that their consumption habits are very different from their creative aesthetics. They also discussed the joy of repetition, and how we often search for a reflection of our wants and desires, as well as our own identification in the art we consume, but also that we need to be aware of our cognitive capacity to consume a new, or deeper, piece of art. Tangents: Some of the tangents in this episode include K-Pop, differing experiences of live performances, and interoception/self-insights into our own capacities.

Ep. 33 - Autism, Artistic Expression, & AppreciationThe first episode of Season 3! In this episode, Kara, Maja, and Bruce talk about the creation of Art(s) of all types, and how this can be a therapeutic activity for many autistics. They also consider what an autistic perspective can do to enhance our artistic creations and what type of unique perspectives can be brought i.e. sensory overload, trauma responses, and being an eternal Other. Discussions of barriers to the production of art are also considered, and how these barriers can be seen as ultimately disabling. And finally, they talk about Art appreciation as a consumer, but they realised that this needs to be expanded into a whole new episode. Stay tuned for Part II!

Tangents: Some of the tangents in this episode include: differing cultural perspectives, aging and maturing as an autistic, and the expression of our vulnerability as just being ourselves.

Ep. 22 - Exploding Trucks, Chuck Berry, & a Lifetime of Autistic Traits Revealed (with Peter O'Neil) - Bruce and Kara interview author and lawyer, Peter O'Neil, who was late identified as autistic at 65. We reflect on living autistically without knowing it, and how autistic thinking is an asset in the legal field -- and how central it is to our passions and relaxation activities. We compare experiences and discuss Peter's recent memoir.

GUEST BIO (PROFESSIONAL): Peter is a tenacious litigator who has successfully taken on giants of the automotive industry including General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Hyundai, Toyota, Nissan and others. Peter first gained national recognition as a paralegal when he represented burn victims and uncovered crucial documents in the infamous GM side saddle fuel tank cases. Just a few months after becoming an attorney in 1998, Peter tried and won his first case against Ford Motor Company. In 2002, Peter helped set a record in Clark County, Washington by winning an $8 million dollar verdict against Hyundai. After an appeal, he caught Hyundai withholding evidence and helped turn the Magaña v. Hyundai verdict into a default judgment that remains one of the biggest discovery sanctions in Washington State History.

Peter’s work is not limited to automotive defects. He has worked on product liability cases ranging from badly designed and manufactured bottle caps and heating pads to defectively designed windows, tractors and dangerous drugs. His work on negligence cases runs the gamut from auto crashes to negligent highway construction. Visit Peter’s website to read more about his case results.

GUEST BIO (PERSONAL): A husband, father of three, grandfather of one, youngest of seven, identified as autistic at the age of 65. As a young teenager I found my first huge passion in the music and person of 1950s musical icon Chuck Berry, whom I first saw perform in a nearly empty auditorium in my hometown of Sacramento, California. It was his aloneness on stage that grabbed me even then, and even though I didn’t understand how solitary my own life would soon be (or perhaps already was). In my mid-fifties I turned that strange lifelong obsession into an unpublished memoir that I now see as a bit of thoroughly autistic literature. My luck was to accidentally find a profession that took full advantage of my autistic charms—i.e. my ability to absorb and connect a nearly infinite number of facts about things that interest me—in that case the harmful products that injured my clients or killed their loved ones. When I learned how many autistic people struggle to find and keep fulfilling work I knew I would have to write and speak about my own experience.

Ep. 20 - Finding Community (with Karen Timm) - In this episode we speak with Karen Timm about the importance of an autistic community, diversity in autistic voices and empowerment of everyone in the community. We also tackle topics related to education and late diagnosis.

GUEST BIO: Karen Timm is a perpetually reflective educational leader, an author, an artist and a musician, a relentless learner, public speaker, and a passionate proponent of the Neurodiversity movement, as well as a global Autistic advocate; most importantly, she is the proud, openly Autistic parent of an AUsome Human.

Founder of the Neurodivergent Infinity Network of Educators, Karen works with NINE ‘beyond walls and borders’ to foster Human Rights based, Neuroaffirmative practice in Education and beyond. By spearheading events such as the international Intersectional Infinity Summit, leading the development of NINE’s educational resources for Educators and other Allies, and modelling her commitment to amplifying diverse Autistic and otherwise Neurodivergent perspectives, Karen has developed a reputation for driving change through ongoing critically reflective practice, active community building and innovative collaborative partnerships which disrupt thinking, shift defaults and change the trajectory for Neurodivergent students, colleagues and families. When Karen is not engaged in her busy work as a school administrator or her advocacy efforts, you may find her drafting one or more new picture books, swimming, paddleboarding, beachcombing, stim dancing, bike riding, viola playing, or capturing unique details from nature through photography and the arts. Watch for two of Karen’s upcoming publications:

‘Actually An Octopus’, a picture book about self-acceptance, living authentically and the importance of allyship (Illustrated by Jon Adams) and ‘#FindingCommunity’, an anthology of diverse Autistic perspectives

Ep. 18 - AAC, Aphantasia, & Cross-Cultural Communication (with Dr. Alyssa Hillary Zisk) - In this episode, Kara and Maja ask Alyssa about all sorts of accommodations: from their experiences as an sometimes AAC user (Assistive & Augmentative Communication) navigating university accommodations, to their thoughts on how folks make certain accommodations during cross-cultural communication vs. communicating across neurotypes, to ideas for how to better support learners who are aphantastic in schools. Don’t know what any of this means? Listen to the episode!

GUEST BIO: Alyssa (they/them) is a neurodivergent researcher with too many research interests and no intention of actually narrowing it down. Right now, most but not all of their research has to do with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as part of their work with AssistiveWare.

Outside research, Alyssa is a math teacher with the Art of Problem Solving, occasionally a neuroscience teacher at the University of Rhode Island, and an improviser at the Contemporary Theater Company. They are also on the admin team of the Facebook group, “Ask Me, I’m an AAC user! (24 Hour Rule!).”

Accommodation wording discussed in ep: “Use of Alternative Communication Method in Class At times, this student may need to utilize an alternative communication method for in-class participation. The student should consult with the course instructor to determine the most effective method on a course by course basis.”

Ep. 12 - Autistic Joys & Victories - For the last episode of the season, we discuss autistic joy and victories. Often, autistic people are not believed when we express happiness or fulfillment, or we are told we can’t be autistic then. Autism and happiness are seen as opposites. For this episode, we talk about how everyone needs to have their needs met in order to be joyful and happy. We discuss autistic victories in the media and personally, and how we foster joy in our lives. We end by talking about next season!

Ep. 9 - Autistic Burnout (with Carole Jean Whittington) - Today we interview Carole Jean about her take on autistic burnout, recovery, and tips for self-care and compassion. She uses the phrase Firm Ground to explain each part of her approach, The Unveiling Method.

GUEST BIO: Carole Jean Whittington is Founder and Principal of Mind Your Autistic Brain where she also hosts a weekly talk show discussing the biggest topics in Autistic life from accommodations, work, relationships, burnout, masking and more with some of the biggest names in the Autistic online space. Carole Jean uses her NeuroDistinct perspective to share a common language from a place of deep knowing and experience that bridges, translates and connects all neurotypes. She carefully combines this with relevant science research and easy to implement strategies that won’t overwhelm or create stress in your life or business. Her purpose is to present a variety of solutions and new ways to approach life and work in harmony. (NeuroDistinct is a term coined by my friend Tim Goldstein of The NeuroCloud. It is our alternative to neurodivergent as we feel we are "wonderfully distinct." From a branding & marketing perspective “distinct” includes us where divergent separates us.)
