Frank Gilbert, as a sixteen year old, starts his apprenticeship as a sign writer in London, and soon gets an opportunity to work on a job on Saltwood castle in Hythe. It's there that Frank meets Olive Brown and their lives together begin. Through the Browns, Frank is introduced to church and finds his faith in Jesus.

Chapter 2. In 1870 Thomas Gilbert finds a job in Folkstone in the docks and together with his wife Susanne raise their three sons, George, Frank and Philip.
