Conflict is inevitable. We are unique individuals with different personalities, perspectives, and plans about what happens to us and around us. Resolution of our differences can be tense, uncomfortable, and downright maddening. We see conflict in the professional world with contentious legal cases, mediation proceedings, and workplace disputes. We also see conflict in our personal interactions. Unchecked, conflict can escalate and become volatile with dangerous outcomes. If adults are having a hard time managing conflict, imagine how hard it can be for kids. We can start early to give them tools for resolving conflict in a productive, non-combative way. I am joined today by master mediator and attorney, Hesha Abrams. She has helped parties around the world navigate their opposing interests to arrive at workable deals and agreements that serve their needs. I asked her to apply her wisdom to the power struggles many parents experience with their children. I enjoyed her stories and ready-to-use strategies for holding the calm with and I believe you will, too.

Among the top concerns parents have today, keeping their children healthy ranks at the top of the list. Nutrition is a critical tool in meeting this need. With today's busy lifestyles, families often find themselves eating on the go or consuming easy-to-prepare, processed foods at home. Done to excess, these practices can lead to very unhealthy outcomes for kids like obesity, diabetes, poor brain development, low immunity, infections, and risks for high cholesterol and high blood pressure as adults. My guest today believes you can do better for your family. She is Sara Ayres, author, educator and advocate for healthy eating. She is co-owner of Bello Campo Farm where she tends a big garden, along with cows, sheep, and chickens. Sara shares how parents can start small growing healthy food for their families while educating their children early about making good food choices. You'll also want to hear about her children's book series which introduces them to farm life.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, an estimated 25 to 50 percent of children and 40 percent of adolescents experience sleep problems. The quality of sleep our children get affects attention, cognitive performance, mood, resiliency, vocabulary acquisition, learning and memory. Not only that, a recent study found that getting a solid seven hours of sleep at night could add up to 5 years to your life. Children need more than that -- young children should get as much as 11 - 14 hours of sleep while teens should strive for 8 - 10 hours. So we know sleep is important, but parents can attest that it is not always easy to get children to sleep. The truth is we actually have to be intentional and set the stage for restful sleeping, for children and ourselves. I am joined today by Pediatric Sleep Consultant, Hilliary Giglio. She is a master at teaching you how to get your child to fall asleep independently, sleeping through the night and taking restful daytime naps.

The last few years have amplified the challenges faced by moms trying to feed their babies. There was the recall of a major baby formula brand in February 2021 that ignited panic among mothers of infants. Accommodation of the needs of nursing moms is anything but consistent amongst employers. Then there's the fact that breastfeeding, while 'natural', is not always easy. Whatever approach moms choose to feed their babies, they need support, so they can perform this loving and necessary act.
Andrea Ippolito, Founder of SimpliFed, recognized this dilemma and is doing something about it as her company fulfills its mission "to create a new model for optimal feeding by building trusted relationships with parents, partnering with healthcare payers and providers, and shifting policy, practice, and narratives to drive health and economic equity, starting with baby’s first foods." Expectant parents experience a wide range of emotions over the months leading up to their child's birth -- joy, excitement, anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. They plan, prepare their home, and envision what their child will be like. As thrilled as they are when their little one arrives, reality sets in that caring for their newborn is WAY more work than they imagined. Those early months are called the fourth trimester and today's guest has a passion for guiding parents through it. Here to talk to me about navigating that time is Dr. Diane Speier. For a full discussion about how parents can cope in the post-partum period, check out Dr. Speier's book, Life After Birth: A Parent’s Holistic Guide for Thriving in the Fourth Trimester.

The prospect of attending college should evoke optimism and excitement for teens as they take their next big step toward life exploration and fulfillment, 'on their own'. Yet, the college journey is more often fraught with stress and fear. Teens (and their parents!) can quickly become so overwhelmed with paperwork, testing, visits, financial aid and 'all of the things' that they lose sight of what this journey will mean for their future. Today's guest, Beth Probst, Founder of At The Core LLC, uses her expertise in career development to help teens get clear about their life goals, so they can chart the best course for building the life that they dream of.

As parents, we willingly sacrifice a lot for the sake of our children's happiness and well-being. In the process, we sometimes neglect our relationship with our spouses and parenting partners. They may not be able to verbalize it, but children find security and stability when our parental relationships are peaceful and collaborative. We have to be intentional and committed to keeping our connections strong. Today's guest helps Moms build and maintain loving connections with their partners with purposeful strategies, including Date Night. She is particularly passionate about helping couples bridge cultural differences to create loving, family harmony.

Increasingly organizations are realizing that their success is riding on their ability to effectively cultivate a diverse workforce and unleash their knowledge and creativity to meet customer needs. They can only tap into this well of innovation when they ensure ALL employees feel included, valued, and empowered in their workspaces. For adults, this can require a major mindset adjustment -- including those in the majority as well as those in underrepresented groups. Wouldn't it have been great if they had been coached to not only embrace and respect different perspectives at a much younger age, but to embody them as well? None of us knows how long we have here on earth. As the college admissions game becomes increasingly competitive, many students wonder just what it takes to make their application stand out from the rest. Many resort to such tactics as loading up their resumes with activities or advanced courses for which they have little to affinity. Some go as far as to misrepresent their abilities in athletics and admissions testing as recent scandals have revealed. There is another way.
Here is an insightful interview, from the pre-pandemic archives, with 2019 California Mother of the Year®️, Susan Tatsui D'Arcy. An educator and college consultant, Susan has written a book that helps students design robust projects that allow them to research and learn more about a topic or cause that is important to them while demonstrating a range of skills and talents that will catch the attention of college admissions directors.

Even as pop culture and social media have been transforming the way we interact, there truly is no substitute for good old fashioned etiquette and decorum. What better legacy can we leave with our children than good manners and social graces? It truly is a gift that keeps on giving. No matter how high our aspirations take us and no matter how advanced our technology, there is still a human connection we have to nurture if we want to live harmoniously in society.
Joining me to explore this topic, "Why Manners Matter" Fannie Allen, Certified Etiquette and International Protocol Consultant, and Founder of The Allen Protocol & Leadership Institute and Hennrietta Smith, President of Vital Business Solutions, Inc. In the first half, we’ll talk about why manners matter and how beneficial it is to start young, including a few tips about how parents might approach teaching manners and in the second half, we will talk about the long-term implications after children have matured in young adults and beyond in the workforce.
Each year, more than 250,000 children are placed into foster care. African American children make up about 20% of that population. More than 23,000 children will age out of the foster care system (age 18), every year and 25% of those will suffer from direct effects of PTSD. While about 7 out of every 10 foster kids indicates they would like to attend college one day, only about 6% of those who age out of the system will attend college and only 50% of that group will actually graduate with a degree. My guest, Rodney J. Walker beat those odds. The account of his journey, A New Day One: Trauma and Grace and a Young Man’s Journey from Foster Care to Yaleis sure to inspire. You will admire the resilience, determination and courage Mr. Walker demonstrated on his journey through foster care from, age 5 to 17, and throughout his academic pursuits in the upper echelons of higher education as well as his professional endeavors as a speaker and entrepreneur.

I asked him to recount his journey to redemption where his quest to escape the perils of poverty and his father's addiction led to drug dealing and violence on the mean streets of Baltimore. There was no question he was unwilling to answer and he owned his mistakes as he offered sobering lessons for young boys today and the parents who are raising them. Callers also chimed in with astute observations.
