The BOMB podcast, is a collection of conversations taken from a weekly show on Radio Cardiff 98.7fm. As part of a project run by BE.Xcellence, a social enterprise aiming to amplify, the voices of people from Black, Asian and minority ethic communities, who are inspirational, leaders and achievers from Wales and beyond. Kamal Ali is the inventor of the world’s first patented interactive prayer mat. As a product designer, he dreamed of owning a patent and his faith is a major source of inspiration.

The mat features touch-sensitive buttons that guide users through the steps of prayer, including movements, recitations, and prayer times. It also includes built-in audio to play of verses from the Quran, making learning both engaging and easy. The mat's colourful design and simple interface make it accessible for children of all ages, helping them develop a strong foundation in their faith while also enhancing their memorisation and understanding of the prayer rituals.

Yasmin Gulzar believes in the power of the imagination.

"The power of the human imagination is limitless, enabling us to envision possibilities beyond reality and create extraordinary ideas. Imagination fuels creativity, innovation, and problem-solving, allowing us to explore new perspectives and dream of better futures. Lawrence Hoo is a poet, and educator committed to driving change through inclusive education and powerful storytelling. His work advocates for authentic representation, ensuring every voice is heard and every story is told with dignity.

Through poetry, he highlights marginalized experiences and challenge societal narratives, using art as a tool for social change. As an educator, he creates inclusive spaces that empower students to engage critically and creatively. As an author, he strives to reflect diverse experiences, challenge stereotypes, and contribute to a more just and equitable society.

Philip is a dietitian that runs a meal prep company, online coaching and work for the NHS. What inspires him is trying his best to build Generational Health especially in the black community in Cardiff.

One of his success is being a diabetes dietitian and starting a group fitness session called AFROBLAST.

Mustafa also known as winner is a business man and the founder of Winners Grub. His business is based on providing healthy, balanced, nutritious food and specialise in East African Cuisine. He serves this across Cardiff and the surrounding areas. All food is authentic and homemade, freshly prepared daily from scratch.

"My mother inspires me a lot. She is the definition of resilience".

Through his business, he has inspired many young people to stay active, remain consistent, persevere in their studies, and find hobbies that keep them on positive paths.

Billy and Nkechi are the founders of Cynefin Pamoja. A third sector charity. They host events for those within the community. Cynefin Pamoja is open to all, and cater to African and Caribbean communities.

What inspires Nkechi and Billy is seeing others receive support and reach their full potential. One of their successes is collaborating with others and becoming established within our hometown of Newport, South Wales, especially through the short film we created showcasing the untold stories of Windrush people in Wales.

He engage with internal and external stakeholders to develop the operational plan and coordinate delivery.

Liam has two sons and his heritage is Welsh - Jamaican. His family members are making an impact in Wales, contributing to the food industry and the reggae music seen.

I am Selina, a versatile singer, songwriter, rapper, and performer born and raised in St Pauls, Bristol. Known as Krush, I’m a familiar face in the music scene, bringing confidence and charisma to every mic I touch. My extensive experience spans various genres and collaborations with artists and producers across the UK, highlighting my adaptability and talent. From a young age, I was immersed in a diverse musical landscape. My music channels both pleasure and pain, offering listeners a raw and authentic glimpse into survival, relationships, addiction, abandonment, and the intense spectrum of love. I’ve worked with legends like Mike Skinner from The Streets, Example, and The Mitchell Brothers. Back in early 2007, I made waves on TV and YouTube alongside Nolay and Baby Blu on the Mitchell Brothers' "Excuse My Brother" remix. I’ve also created music with the late great MC Skibadee and MIKE GLC, and I’ve been featured on DJ Ace's BBC 1Xtra Vocal Elections platform. My music delves deep into the raw and real sides of life, touching on survival, relationships, addiction, abandonment, and the intensity of explosive love.

Adjua Mensah is a musician, writer, and producer from Splott, Cardiff. Music has been her greatest passion for years. She plays both guitar and bass and is always striving to elevate her craft. Last year, she released her debut EP, and she is very excited to drop a new single as part of another EP later this year.

On June 14, 2024, she headlined at Clwb Ifor Bach. "I was honoured to be chosen as Huw Stephens' Artist of the Week for BBC Radio Wales".

What fuels her creativity is the magic of music and its incredible power to evoke emotions in listeners. The creative process of writing music deeply inspires her and she cherish the opportunity to share this magic with others.

Sundas is a poet and spoken word artist. She writes about a variety of topics, but her primary focus is on social justice. Her work draws heavily from her personal experiences and observations of the world around her.

Much of my work is deeply personal and raw, as poetry serves as a form of healing for me.

One of her proudest moment is when she published her first poetry book 'Echoes Among Olive Branches' in January 2024.

Amaris Powell is a PGCE Drama student, but in her spare time, she writes and perform Spoken Word. She migrated from the Antiga when she was two years old, along with her family.

"People inspire me a lot. Just watching people live this life full of uncertainties. Especially the people that are close around me (Family, Friends, Boyfriend)."

One of her proudest moments was when she run a half marathon in honour of a friend that died unexpectedly and raise money for his family in Jamaica.

Kimberly Amissah Jeffrey is a Ghanaian residing in Cardiff. She's always been passionate about writing. Whether it's crafting essays or stories, she tends to exceed the word limit.

"Perhaps it's because I enjoy expressing myself verbally. My love for writing stems from my incessant flow of ideas whenever I hold a pen".

Upon moving to the UK, she found herself overwhelmed by the change. Missing her family deeply, she sought a healthy outlet for her emotions : poetry became her refuge. Unlike typical spoken word or rhythmic poems, Kimberly's are simply raw emotions expressed through words.

Kimberly has been working with Be.Xcellence CIC since October 2023. She wanted to share her poetry with songs that relates to the poem.

Joy Djadi is the visionary founder of Afro Hair Academy Wales. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had a revelation - there was a significant gap in Wales when it came to expertise in Afro hair and multi-textured hair. Determined to make a change, she initiated a pivotal meeting with ISA Training, renowned as the longest-standing provider of hair and beauty training in Wales.
AHA is the very first Afro hair apprenticeship in Wales.

Their ultimate aim is to inject much-needed diversity into the hair industry. They aspire to pave the way for a future generation of hairstylists who are well- versed in Afro and multi-textured hair, enhancing the inclusivity and expertise of the industry.

Duke Al is a published poet, spoken word artist, hip hop artist and creative practitioner. Writing rhymes is his therapy. From a young age, he would scribble raps and poems in his lyric book. It was a way he could express himself as an escapism to challenge his OCD.

He is the author of ‘Bittersweet: The Highs, The Lows, Hypers and Hypos of Living with Type 1 Diabetes’.

Babbleu is a presenter and content creator for Radio Platform and Feed-the-sprout. He enjoys making videos based on his life motto of “Laugh, learn and inspire”. His videos range from comedy skits, interviews.
He also hosts a motivational series called “Monday motivation” on his platforms targeted to help and motivate people in some type of way.”

I am Kingsley Walters, the founder of Kingsley Walters Studio and a craftsman. The Kingsley Walters brand was established in 2015 while I was studying tailoring and learning traditional methods of working with leather. I quickly became captivated by leather craftsmanship and the versatility and longevity of leather as a material. What initially began as a hobby, making small items for myself and friends, soon evolved into a business as I started receiving bespoke orders through word of mouth. By investing further in traditional saddlery tools, I have been able to create small capsule collections and lead workshops on leather craftsmanship.

Jon Samuel is the author of "Remembering to Forget: An Anthology of Angst and Attitude." For over 20 years, he has dedicated himself to working in water and sewerage emergencies at Dwr Cymru Welsh Water. His inspiration comes from various sources, particularly in poetry and rhymes.

The blend of reggae rhythms and profound thoughts, especially from his favourite reggae artists, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Benjamin Zephaniah, deeply influences his poetry, tackling subjects that truly matter.

He takes pride in the fact that, with assistance, he successfully self-published a book of poetry.

In celebration of International Women's Day on March 8th, we are delighted to feature a talented new children's author on the show. This heart-warming story is not only perfect for World Book Day but also serves as a beautiful tribute to the creative spirit of Jaziea.

The book revolves around a charming tale of a little girl with a birthmark on her face, exploring the uniqueness of her features and illustrating how her birthmark transforms into a myriad of things, taking her on enchanting journeys to various places. Taiye Omokore is a creative and self-motivated photographer born and raised in Nigeria. He focus primarily on fashion and portraiture, aiming to evoke emotions and convey personal experiences through his work.

He actively raises awareness about often overlooked issues as a climate enthusiast within the fashion industry. An integral aspect of his artistic vision revolves around celebrating black beauty and identity. Through his lens, he strives to showcase the diversity and profound richness of the black community.

He is also the Editorial Director of KLAT Magazine, a publication dedicated to spotlighting the exceptional achievements of young talents in the creative industry, both in Wales and beyond.

Sheryl Njini and Naini Sindiyo- Bennike, the president and vice president, respectively, of an organisation we recently launched, called Black Girl's Space Cardiff. Black Girl's Space Cardiff is part of a network with Black Girl's Space Manchester and Black Girl's Space Cambridge.

This organisation aims to provide a safe space for young black women in South Wales. Although there is a prominent number of young black women in South Wales, there seems to be a lack of spaces that cater to black women's thoughts, feelings and interests. They saw a gap in the community that needed to be filled. They want to create an environment that allows freedom, expression and a voice to all members.

Zainab Bello Badejoko, also known as 'The Zainab B' is the founder and creative director of SISI CLARA. A fashion brand Based in Cardiff. She pursued her studies in Nigeria and later embarked on the journey of obtaining a master's degree in fashion marketing at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Inspired by the spirit of modern luxury entwined with the vibrant tapestry of the Nigerian culture, Zainab decided to design a made to wear order pieces blend cutting-edge aesthetics with traditional influences, presenting a distinctive narrative that transcends cultural confines. Each garment narrates a tale of artistry, fervour, and a dedication to pushing the boundaries of style.

SISI CLARA is an Afro-contemporary high fashion brand experience for the today’s woman.

Kiani Perera is an Anti-Racism Consultant and Coordinator. She provides the Welsh Government Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan support, training and guidance. She also supports Further and Higher Education Institutions to seamlessly embed Equity, Diversity and Inclusion into the curriculum.

**Her main responsibilities include developing CPDs for curriculum departments, reviewing policies and turning tick boxes into tangible actions; to proactively support institutions to eradicate systemic discrimination.

She believes no one should face racism. As an optimist, she believes that we can dismantle this invented discrimination together.**

Isabella Rose Pui Sha Tang, a student at St David’s Catholic College, keeps herself active by exploring various options such as drama, fashion, modeling, dancing, and playing basketball. Her parents are supportive of her self-determination to pursue what she believes in, regardless of societal expectations. She is driven by her career aspirations, putting in the work and aiming for opportunities that align with her desired career path.

On Friday, 9th February 2024, St David's Catholic College organized a cultural day for students to showcase their cultural backgrounds. Isabella thoroughly enjoyed attending this event, where she proudly represented her country, Hong Kong.

An excerpt of childhood memories is taken from a book written and narrated by Cardiff singer Patti Flynn, titled 'The War, The Youngs', and 'Pomeroy Street'. Patti, the youngest member of a mixed heritage family of eight from Cardiff's multicultural docks area, shares some childhood memories in her book. When World War II began, her mother Beatie Young became widowed and lost her two eldest sons.

Patti describes her mother, Beatie Young, as an old-fashioned woman of great substance. The narrative includes Patti's own memories, complemented by those shared by her mother. This first-person narrative, now presented as a podcast, recounts a true story of wartime endurance and love.

Jessie Grace, the host of Unity in the Community on Radio Cardiff, celebrates BE.Xellence's latest success in receiving the FSB UK award for Diversity and Inclusion.

Donna is a very inspiring person with big ideas and boundless energy. The CoLab Work Spaces are now open for collaborators to join a community of change makers who prioritize social values at the core of their business

During April half term 2023, the Lioness Community Projects took over Radio Cardiff show called the BOMB. This opportunity gave young members of LCP the chance to host their own radio show live to 42, 000 listeners.

This podcast is dedicated to Adwina Amadife, who is the proprietor of Amadife Salon, formerly known as Ebony Hair and Beauty, based in Cardiff South Wales.

Kervin Julien, is passionate about people. He believes in living on purpose, for the purpose of serving others. After a difficult and troubled childhood, Kervin knows only too well the importance of seeing a persons heart, and not their circumstances.

After volunteering for many years, helping people without a home, Kervin set up refuge for many living on the streets of Coventry. Providing, food, resources and more importantly connection, love and empathy. Returning back to Wales, he now runs a food pantry, in Butetown, offering the community reduced prices for produce, helping to tackle the food poverty crisis, but also helping to create a sense of belonging.

Digging for Gold, is a new novel. The story encompasses, empathy, compassion and taking action. Joined in the studio to record this podcast are good friends, Alyg Foster and author Jimmy Stokes. Both share a long history of working within the education system in Wales, and share their stories, which demonstrate just what 'Digging For Gold', is all about.

These two role models, have made a huge impact in contributing into the lives of students that some educators may have left behind. Many of their ex-students are a legacy to their commitment for social justice, and the importance of education. **Jen Reid is a British Black Lives Matter activist from Bristol.

After the statue of Edward Colston was pushed into the Bristol Harbour, Reid stood on the empty plinth and made a "Black Power" salute. Her husband took a photograph and posted it on Instagram, and it quickly transmitted worldwide. Jen said this was a spontaneous act and one that she would be happy to do again. Since that historical moment, Jen has become a patron of Cargo Movement, which creates educational classroom content around Black History. And has been a sought after spokes person, being invited into schools and organisations to talk about the importance of representation and alley-ship.

Jen Reid will go down in the history books, as a symbol of hope and progressive movement towards racial justice. Bristol should be a very proud city, to have citizens who are prepared to stand up and be counted against any kind of oppression.

This was a "Take Back" take over on the BOMB and Jen, certainly too back the power from the place where Edward Colston once stood!

What would you do with a "Surge of Power".**

Yusuf is an innovative leader in one of the largest colleges in the UK. He has worked as a teacher and leader in London, Bristol and Cardiff and is passionate about creating effective teams that thrive.

Yusuf is a prominent digital transformer and has worked at national level to implement changes in response to the pandemic. An advocate of Nudge Theory, Growth Mindset and Values Based Leadership, Yusuf looks to build diverse teams that are outward-facing, take inspirations from others and find bespoke solutions to meet the needs of the collective. Chidiebere Ibe is a 25-year-old medical student originally from Nigeria, currently studying in the Ukraine, aspiring to be a neurosurgeon. He is also and medical illustrator and has become a trail blazer after sharing a positive representation of a black foetus on twitter, which went viral.

Chidiebere’s illustration caught the attention of CNN, CBS and the Huffington post, and the Canadian congress request his insight in providing inclusion and diversity and workplace equity.

He is now, Forbes featured medial illustrator and chief medical illustrator for the Journal of global neurosurgery.

Orienne Taylor, is a Therapeutic Counsellor, Life Coach & Hypnotherapist.

A member of the - British Association of Counsellors & Psychotherapists and the Hypnotherapy Society.

She specialises in addiction and have been working with Substance Misuse services in Cardiff as a therapist for 18 Years with both Adults and Young people. Working on a one to one basis and a group setting. She recently trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which is used as an integral part of integrative therapeutic approach to working with clients.
This approach also encompasses Mindfulness which have found to be an invaluable part of the journey of recovery and an invaluable life skill to have in our current climate.

Orienne's, career has allowed insightful and professional input in delivering and developing training programmes for staff from other services around the topic of substance misuse and counselling skills. As well as a life skills programmes for young adults for many years.

Gemma Price

Gemma Price, is the Community Engagement Lead at Llanrumney Phoenix Boxing Club. My main role is to see what the need is within our community and meet it. This could be running workshops to support people with their mental health and well-being, helping with confidence and self esteem, empowerment and building community and friendships. We have both amateur boxing and fitness classes within the gym and we work with various partners across many different organisations within Cardiff.

I grew up in Glasbury on Wye, Radnorshire. After going to the local primary school, I went to Llandrindod Wells grammar. Although I was in the ‘A’ stream, I was a rebel and failed miserably at exams; this attitude continued and dogged almost everything I did until the age of 40.

After a brief stint in the Hereford Police (2 years), where I trained in Bridgend, in 1965 I moved to London: it was the swinging sixties and I joined in.

In business I quickly rose in sales and management to become a consultant, running my own company. I joined prestigious clubs, played tennis, squash, bridge at decent levels and skied. But all the time I was descending into chronic prescription drug addiction and alcoholism.

Aged 40 I was introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous. I have not taken a drug, or drunk alcohol since. My career went from my business going into liquidation, to becoming a stockbroker, to a business development adviser to the pharmaceutical industry, where again I started my own business; this time successfully.

My dream had always been to write books. In 2008 my autobiography, Surviving Addictions was published by Chipmunka using the pseudonym, Jack Llewellyn.

After several visits to Morocco, spread over 36 years, in January 2017 I went to live there to start Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous to help their 1,000,000 alcoholics and drug addicts. As a consequence of this, and my past experience, I wrote Drug Clouds Over Morocco – Casablanca Revisited. Also, last year, I published Millions of Miracles, a history of Alcoholics Anonymous and the influence it’s had helping millions of alcoholics, drug addicts, their families and others with addiction and psychological issues all over the world, except Morocco and other countries in North Africa.

Being the longest serving Italian restaurant in Wales, founder and owner, Giovanni Malacrino has served the likes of the Jones family, to actual royalty! and each done with the same amount of curtesy and respect.
Gio, as he is affectionately known by, is a entrepreneur, Tv personality and chef. As well as a dedicated father of two beautiful children who are the apple of their dads eye.

Gio, has been a bit of father to a lot of aspiring entrepreneurs, and has spent many years dabbling in other business venture, such as No 10 night Club, which was one of Cardiff's most popular venues. Gio, enjoys passing on his business wisdom and life knowledge, to others, he blames his success on having an aptitude for learning, as well as gratitude and keeping a positive mindset.
Born in Reggio Calabria ltaly, Giovanni came to live in Cardiff at the age of 3 and calls himself a Welsh Italian and is proud of both heritages, following his fathers footsteps in feeding people his famous Spaghetti, at the BOMB, we think Giovanni will be feeding Wales for another 38 years to come.

Shaun Pascal is a respected well-connected Public Servant, who works within policing in the UK. He is a sought-after public speaker and Co-Founder of Black Wall Street Media Ltd. He firmly believes that the best stories remain undocumented and can only be heard from those that lived and witness them. Therefore, he is passionate about utilizing his platform to amplify the voices of ordinary people.

In addition, he is an advisor to many organisations in the legal and professional services, publishing, and community lead sectors. He is an advocate for Mental Health and Social justice including Women's rights.

A larger than life character, who's first love is - West Ham United! Anthony Pembleton is renowned for his bright suits, odd shoes and gleeful dance moves. Being born with Sickle Cell has not held him back when it comes to the dance floor or the gym, which he visits daily.
In this conversation, Westy shares his health issues and how they effect people mainly from the African diaspora, and how the NHS failed to recognise sickle cell as a life long illness, but thankfully Wales is now leading the way in moves towards change.

Westy is a funny character, who is kind and generous with his times to a fault. With many many years working in youth and community work , he is passionate about the opportunities for young people and love to write poems. He is pretty hard to sum up actually, as one minute he is a gentle giant, who loves people, then next his attitude towards women and marriage, leaves you speechless, but hey! at least he's honest.

Leroy William, is also known as Cardiff's Patty man, his tasty Caribbean patties and patty cakes, have been going down a storm. Leroy's unique twist on the traditional Welsh cake, with a "likkle" bit of Jamaican rum, is an infusion of heritage, baked with love for all the part so him that make him unique.

Leroy's inspiration for cooking came from his father who was originally from Jamaica.
Mr Williams senior, would often fill the home with rich aromas of seasoning and spices, bringing a little bit of tropical sunshine to rainy Wales.

The patty man brand was unknowingly launch back in April 2021, after friends and family would ask for his famous patties, and he rest is history. He is also developing a unique range of sauces that are also becoming immensely popular, with his followers. However, non of this would be possible, if it was not for the loving support of his wife Andrea, who is the backbone behind the patty man brand.

At the BOMB, we believe 2022, is going to be a breakthrough year for the Patty Man brand, as Leroy continues to pay respect and honour to his Caribbean and Welsh infused roots, the rest of Wales or even the world, will also be able to share in his "likkle" ray of sunshine.

Jacob Robinson is Wales' new featherweight Champion. Having been absent from the ring for the past 19months, Jacob returned to take the crown winning Angelo Dragone (5-3).
Jacob is a double jabber, which makes it difficult for any opponent to know what is coming next. Dubbed Baby Jake, by his uncle Leon, this fight was in honour and memory to one of the men who inspired him and had always championed in Jakes corner, in and out of the ring.
The win, is also a dedication to his baby son Noah.
This was no ordinary fight, this is about legacy! as Jacob won the same fight as his father Stephen Robinson back 1993, both at the same weight, which is a rarity.

Stephen Robinson, took the title after 48 hrs noticed and has encouraged both his sons, in the sport ever since. The BOMB had the pleasure of meeting the father and son duo, in celebration of all they had both achieved and in hope of what is in front of them.
Stephen, hopes to open his own gym to train and inspire other Welsh professionals and Jacob, hopes to keep up the consistency in the ring, and to remember his "why" to be a powerful representation of discipline, consistency and showmanship.

He intends to remain the champ and prove that the Robinsons are here to stay!

Carmen Carrol is a new author, a woman on a mission to help people find their "Pathway to Healing".

Drawing from her own experiences, Carmen is eloquent, when describing her scars of abuse and rejection, taking the reader on an emotional journey of unpacking their memories. Retracing your steps as a victim can sometimes be a "triggering" experience, but necessary to find healing and freedom, here Carmen is empathetic and offers the reader comfort and affirmation, using scripture, which re-affirms all that was stolen.

The book tells the story of her life from the age of six into her late forties, being a victim of

verbal and emotional abuse from some of her siblings, leading to an estranged relationship

and how she overcame it all.

Born into a Caribbean family discussing matters of abuse is often a taboo subject in most

black households. Released during black history month this book not only highlights the

problems of sibling abuse but is also a self help tool for those looking for answers to problems

of sibling estrangement. Within its pages are details of leading therapists and psychologists

from whom the author sought help to become the person she is today.

Not only is she a star community organiser, but in 2020 she was also recognised as "Hello" Magazines, STAR MOTHER! and won an award for being just that!

Andrew Ogun took action during 2020, becoming the leader of BLM Gwent. He is a natural in the arts, demonstrating his voice through the power of music, rapping and the vision behind a creative clothing brand.
Andrew honours the opportunities afforded to him through the youth support service, Urban Circle based in Newport, and now gives back! to all the people including his mother, that have supported and invested in his ability to speak up against racial justice and affirmative action in the arts world.
His ability to create, is infectious provoking others into action, demonstrated in his new role at Arts Council Wales, who created a career opportunity seeing him as a representative of promoting greater diversity and inclusion in the arts sector. This exciting opening, enables Andrew to seek out new artists who may not otherwise sought funding from ACW.

Breaking down barriers comes naturally to Andrew, as his focused and determined attitude towards change will forever be recognised as a catalyst in the historical BLM movement in Wales.

Leroy Brito is Butetown's finest, as an all round creative writer and comedian, starting his career at the age of 29, finally submitting to his love of making people laugh professionally.
Leroi has created sell out tours using humours real life content, that all audiences are able to relate too. His ability to perform un-nerved, just demonstrates the professionalism and work he has investing in crafting his art.

As a creative writer he is able to reach all ages, such as being the star of the BBC One hit sitcom Tourist Trap, Leroy has recently presented on 6 Nations Sin Bin, Wales Big Kickoff and Wales Live and is also the creator of the Moment of Truth podcast.

In demand as a writer, Leroy has recorded two radio stand up shows, co-wrote a BBC Radio Wales sitcom and recently wrote on the award winning Cbeebies pre school show JoJo and Gran Gran.

Yaina Samuels is a tenacious, bubbly entrepreneur, who has used her personal challenges to create life changing and life saving initiatives that have shaped drug and alcohol dependant recovery, and the family court system in Wales.

Sharing her heritage of West African, Bajan and Welsh roots, Yaina views Wales as her home, but fell an instantly "rooted" on her first visit to Sierra Leone. Steve is proud of his Somali heritage and shares many stories of some prolific characters from the Horn, who have contributed to UN work, biochemistry, and founders of early progressive moves toward race relations and youth work.
As the UK's earlies Black settlers, Somali seamen were the backbone to urban harbours, after leaving their nomadic lifestyles to settle in dense urban sea ports, Steve is keen to ensure their stories are heard and their legacies are not forgotten.
This is an enchanting conversation of, serendipity, legacy and UNITY.

Steve, says he is not interested in intentionally leaving a legacy, however his legacy will remain to be seen in the lives he sowed into, whether he likes it or not.

Reflecting on Black History Wales, the BOMB is in conversation with John Actie, who's name will go down in history as part of the Cardiff five and Britain's biggest miscarriage of justice.

This podcast proceeds the BBC's documentary entitled " A Killing in Tiger Bay" which sheds light on the brutal murder of Lynette White in 1988. Finally the public get to see and hear the full story, not just from the perspective of the trail and subsequent wrongful arrests, but from the human side of who one of the Cardiff five are.

John Actie, born in Cardiff Docklands, was later raised in a predominately white area with his 6 siblings. Having lost his father to cancer at the age of 11, Johns 32 year old mother, soldiered on and raised 7 children single handily. Here John humorously reflects on memories of his father and how his fair but firm discipline was missed after his passing. Crippled by grief, John naturally began to "get into trouble" and later as a teenager, grew a healthy head of dreadlocks. John believes that his appearance and reputation bought him unwanted and often unwarranted attention by the police, which would later impact of his life in a petrifying way.
After 33 years of this story dominating his life, the now 60 year old, believes that it is his time to set the record straight. In this podcast you will get to know the person behind the name and the heart behind the man.

BE.Xcellence is unique in providing integrated programmes to become a catalyst in galvanising inclusion and social mobility through knowledge acquisition and intellectual self-realisation. After a successful, 20-year career as a pioneer in business, Donna is using her organisational project management skills, proficiency in networking and passion for racial equality to create a social enterprise that will ensure people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities are seen and heard.

Born in Cardiff in 1934, from a Welsh Mother and Jamaican Father, Elizabeth Campbell became a school teacher in 1963. In the early 1970s, Betty raised her profile by becoming the nation’s first black Head Teacher with her post at Mount Stuart Primary in Butetown.

She was also becoming known outside of Wales as an important authority on education and a leading academic.

Her contribution to the world of education was noted when later she was invited to be part in the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Commission on Education. The commission produced many papers on education including the well-received book ‘Learning to Succeed’, which included examples of excellent practice at Mount Stuart Primary School.

Pupils who attended Mount Stuart Primary under Betty’s guidance soon discovered that every month was Black History Month as the curriculum included wherever possible,references to and examples of Black people’s experiences and positive contribution to British society.

Betty herself has said: “When I was a head in my school I looked at Black History, the Caribbean, Africa and slavery and the effects. That was just a junior school. But there were people that said, ‘You should not be teaching that’. But why not? It happened. Children should be made aware.

Even now I have ex-pupils in their 60s saying, ‘Thanks for the Black History that you taught us’. What should come out is that you can eventually rise up from these depths.”

It’s no coincidence that a number of children left Mount Stuart with a reading age of 13 and above.

This surely shows that when we engage and empower children, we inculcate a sense of belonging and significance, they can go onto succeed.

During the 1980s Betty became a member of the Board of BBC Wales, overseeing editorial and production issues. In 2003, Betty was made an honorary fellow of UWIC for services to education and community life, for which she was also awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Betty has also stirred up local politics representing Butetown for both Labour and as an independent. She was anexceptional community activist who tirelessly dedicated her life to the education of young people, continuing to be anactive advocate for the people of Butetown even after her retirement, continuing to run her Saturday classes for local young people and planning workshops for Black History Month.

In 2015, Betty was presented with her lifetime achievement award by Kebba Manneh, chair of Unison Cymru Wales’ Black Members Group, for her lifetime contribution to Black History in Education in Wales.

It’s been said that Black History Month in the UK, can be traced back to trips, class assemblies and workshops organised by Mrs Campbell in 1973. Forging the way ahead for Black History Wales 365, where Black History is taught and celebrated not just annually, but throughout the year.

Dr Susan Davis, is a Senior Lecturer in the school of Education and Social Policy at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She is the Pathway Leader for the Professional Doctorate in Education (EdD) and is a tutor on the MA programme. As part of a team, she is working on phase two of the Advance HE Race and Equality Charter mark across Cardiff Met.

Previously, she was a primary school teacher, specialising in Foundation Phase.

Susan is the chair of the BAMEed Network Wales. She is currently carrying out research into children’s well-being, looking at the implementation of an emotional literacy programme on quiet, shy and anxious children in the Foundation Phase setting. Other research interests include the educational experiences of BAME learners and learners with English as an additional language (EAL) / multi-lingual learners.

In this conversation, we talk education with two Black males who have both had very different experiences of working in education.

Daniel Wilson is a Phsyics teacher from Ebbw Vale and has enjoyed a long career, empowering young people to "reach" for better grades, whilst supporting their wellbeing through teaching them the benefits of mindfulness. Daniel shares his experiences when dealing with leadership and opens up about the vulnerability of not being totally open when wishing to express a professional opinion about school issues. All in all Daniel has enjoyed his time as a teacher so far, and always works to the best of his ability keeping the pupils at the forefront of his goals.

Abu Bark, Madden is a multi disciplined professional and expert of Black history. Having returned to education, after a career as a chief, Abu Bakr began a journey of self discovery and personal development, whilst in pursuit of academic knowledge. His thirst for knowledge is seen in his accolades, achieving more letters after his name than the alphabet, but he still struggles to find work as a full time educator. Instead, Abu Bakr has been a teacher to teachers and a master speaker, sharing his knowledge of genetics and Black history, and has been a sort after professional over the past year, but government, corporate companies and more. Here in conversation with the BOMB he shares his frustrations within the education system as a profession and as practice.

Sue was a primary school teacher for 10 years in Brixton, before she became a lecture. She held a variety of senior leadership roles in school - Key Stage co-ordinator/Assistant Head/SENCO and Acting Headteacher. In 2003, Sue returned to Swansea and became part of lecturing teams for Teacher Training in Swansea initially working on Primary BAEd and PGCE courses. This was followed by work on the Teach First Programme, Graduate Teaching Programme, and PCET courses for Further & Higher Education. Since 2017, she has been responsible for Professional Learning programmes for teachers and educators, mainly focussed on leadership and ALN (SPMLD), whilst supporting students on Masters' courses.

Sue is a passionate educator committed to developing the same enthusiasm in others. Reflection on our current education system has inspired her to engage in promoting and challenging issues affecting the BAME community both for teachers and students. She believes education is a powerful tool for change for both the individual and society it exposes us all to possibilities and opportunities to be our better selves.

Carmen Bell has been a teaching assistant in Cardiff, for the past 15 years. In this conversations, Carmen shares her delight in working with young people and explains how two days are never the same. Carmen also talks about some of the barriers to progression that can impact on career development when being with a recruitment agency, claiming that moving around often, from school to school can prevent some teachers, seeing TA's as genuine staff. Despite some of the set backs, Carmen in determined to become a higher learning teaching assistant (HTLA).

Carmen has had the opportunity to teach children on topics, such as cultural appropriation, sharing her heritage as a Caribbean person and how to best look after afro hair.

This conversation is with a newly qualified teacher, Natalie Jones from Carmarthen, who will be starting her exciting career as the head of Welsh. Natalie shares her journey in education and what inspired her to become a professional teacher. Having experienced working with young people, Natalie realised her calling, whilst running a session on banking, as a teaching assistant in a pastoral role.
During this conversation Natalie reveals that, some of the barriers have been generational and was confident that she would break the chain. Representation in education really matters and it is a delight for the pupils of Carmarthen who will have the benefit of being taught by a lady of Caribbean decent, who is confident in sharing culture experiences, these kids are in for a real treat.

In this conversation, Professor Uzo Iwobi, a Nigerian born nationalist, who settled in Wales in the early 1990s, shares her journey in education as a lecturer of law and life.

Having a varied career, which has predominantly been to influence social justice, Professor Uzo, talks about the importance of being "teachable" both formally and informally.

Professor Uzo Iwobi lives in Swansea South Wales, born in Nigeria to parents whose ethos was, "Each One Teach One", Uzo was raised by two formidable and aspirational leaders. Living on a Nigerian educational campus, it is clear that the apple did not fall far from the tree.
Here, Uzo shares her turbulent journey of settling into Wales, and experiences of overt racism and career setbacks in the early years, but her career can be an example of, how things work together for good in the end.
She has had an extraordinary career, starting out as a lawyer and educator, going on to become the founder of the ACCW, African Community Centre Wales, Race Council Cymru. Professor Uzo has been a race equality advisor to South Wales police, and is currently enjoying her role as race advisor to the Welsh Government, helping to raise representation in the Senedd.
This conversation is a story of adversity overcome by advantage and is evident that her family values of leaving no-body behind can be seen in her humility and gratitude for friendships, on her journey to success, Uzo brings with her the women who made her "family" whilst working in a Walkers crisps factory many years ago.

Daniel Onafuwa is a law graduate of Cardiff University, and co founder of, The National Law Project, a Community Interest Company. Daniel was born in Lagos Nigeria, raised in London and decided to study law after winning a national competition, which won him a one year mentorship and work experience contract.
During the pandemic, Daniel saw an opportunity to provide valuable work experience for law students, paralegal support for law firms and most importantly, FREE legal advice for people on low incomes.
The Community Law Project, is a life-line of advice and support to so many, unable to access legal aid, a provision funded by the state, which in recent years has not been as accessible to the most vulnerable in society. Daniels vision shared by other board members, has had great success in providing a space for a global law interns to grow, share and work together.

Sunil Patel has worked for Show Racism the Red Card, for the past 15 years. Raised in Grangetown Cardiff, from a South Indian heritage, Sunil shares his work experience as a regional manager, working for one of the most popular anti - racism charities in the UK.
During this conversation, Sunil reflects on the incidents during the 2021 World Cup, with insight, giving a professional critical analysis of the nations response to the vulgar overt racism which appeared on-line. Sunil also shares, his points of view on the importance of raising representation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic people within all senior roles in football and other prominent positions.

Sunil is a breath of fresh air, as he believes in "hope" and can see a better tomorrow, which is an inspiring outlook, considering SRtRC has seen one of the busiest years since its launch in 1996.

A MURAL celebrating Cardiff’s ethnic diversity has been painted on the wall of a Butetown bar.

Located at Mischief’s Café Bar, James Street, the mural recreates a picture taken by local artist Shawqi Hasson, as part of his “My City, My Shirt” photography project with fellow Cardiff creative Yusuf Ismail.

The photo in the series that the mural features Maimuna Yoncana, who moved to Cardiff four years ago from Guinea-Bissau, a small country nestled between Guinea and Senegal in West Africa.

“I was grabbing some coffee, and I saw her. We’re both Black, but there are all these subtle nuances to Black skin. She was just glowing,” said Yusuf.

“I walked over to explain the project – I’m sure she didn’t really grasp what I meant. I was rambling.”

Fortunately, she agreed to be photographed. Maimuna was heavily pregnant, and posed in the Cardiff shirt with a hand resting on her bump. She gave birth less than a month later, to a baby girl.

He is also a SEN Tutor for students with behavioural and learning difficulties for a local authority in South Wales.

Bianca Ali is a phenomenal young woman who has been the voice and face of Black Lives Matter Movement, Cardiff & Vale. She has a passion for social justice, which can be demonstrated, by highlighting recent events of racial inequality that have taken place in and around Wales. As well as bringing home the impact of the murder of George Floyd to the public consciousness.

Her tenacity has been one to admire, her cries of "NO JUSTICE NO PEACE" mobilized many changes in the way policy and practice in public spaces operated.

A real inspirational, resilient community leader, who out of great adversity created a space for women fleeing domestic violence to have a voice, using spoken word and poetry, demanding that they are not victims but warriors who are taking back their lives.

Kunda Kids was founded in 2020 by husband and wife, Dele and Louisa Olafuyi, during the Covid-19 lockdown. The couple couldn’t find modern and engaging content for their son about Africa’s ancient history, so they decided to create their own!

Together, Dele and Louisa began writing Africa’s Little Kings & Queens, a collection of four beautifully illustrated picture books, inspired by some of ancient Africa’s most influential leaders: Queen Yaa Asantewaa, Mansa Musa, Queen Kitami, and Shaka Zulu.

Magnus is an entrepreneur, originally from Nigeria, his repertoire consists of making music which is Afro-Beats inspired and Drum n Bass. His unique deep voice has been heard all around the world and his reputation as a leading creative in the music industry is growing daily.... one to watch!

Magnus also has a flair for fashion which is demonstrated in his casual clothing brand called the GuGu Gang. The story behind the brand is for people looking to connect to their original African roots, using unique tribal patterns.

Steve Robinson is a former WBO featherweight world champion for Wales. His passion and dedication for the boxing world can be seen in Steve's work ethic, where he is consistently trying to give back to his community and the sport. Steve hopes to use his skills as a boxing coach and personal trainer to train and promote a new WBO world champ from South Wales. His tireless commitment is demonstrated in his hopes to create a new boxing gym in Cardiff, which will facilitate personal and group boxing classes for all ages.
