We are a married couple. In 2022, we sold everything and embarked on an adventure of a lifetime. We thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and then went traveling around various Countries. We want to talk about our adventures and share ALL of the stories, adversity, and achievements we collected along the way, as well as adventures to come. Take a walk with us! We hope you enjoy each step.
Episode Summary: In this episode of YWIB we interviewone of our FAVORITE outdoor (or even casual) brands which we stumbled upon in the adorable town of Leadville, CO. Galena Mountain Projects (or Galena)started with ideas and plots in a cold tent in even colder terrain- ideas to bring the outdoor mecca that is Leadville, to life…through guidebooks. From there, they evolved to selling outdoor/active clothing with a rustic Coloradoflair. We’ve used their Sawatch bamboo sun hoodies on the Colorado Trail and basically every trail we’ve hiked since discovering them. Listen to Justin and David’s story about how thoughts became reality- something that sounds very similar to the making of your next thru hike or backpacking trip, right?
Topics: Galena, clothing, bamboo, small business

Episode Summary: In this special Part 2 of our “Fireside Chats” on Yeti Walks Into Basecamp, we talk about Cuppa’s absolute obsession (possibly a fetish?) for Peak Refuel meals, throwing up out of both ends, who’s feet smell most foul, cuddling with a gorilla, the sky rolling black with midges, why Jedi’s stomach is quite possibly bottomless, and why hiking with Cuppa is only for the privileged. We love these guys and hope you will too. Tune in to E35 Part 1 if you haven’t already.

Episode Summary: In this (RELEASED) subscriber episode of “Yeti Walks Into Basecamp” we do a bit of verbal processing with you. Hiking with a dog can be difficult. Hiking with a 1-year-old, relatively untrained (but we are working on it and she's doing so good!) husky is a bit more so. We discuss some of the highs and lows of our experience so far, hiking over the last 3.5 months with our new girl, Loba. She’s a light to our day but adds a whole new level of difficulty and planning that we need to consider. Additionally, we cover some of the gear we use with her, and some things we are hoping to get in the future. We record this one from our tent, so just ignore the sleepy sounds and sleeping bag rustles. Thanks for being a part!

Episode Summary: In this episode of YWIB we sit down and talk maps/trails with FarOut COO and General Counsel, Alice Bodnar. Yes, you heard that right, we were lucky enough to speak with FarOut and gained invaluable knowledge on the processes leading to trails you see on their app. Including its name change from Guthook to FarOut (not a buyout, just a name change) we discuss what spiked Alice’s interest in coding the famous long trail phone app, GPS tracking on one of the original iPhone models along the PCT, why you won’t see campsite icons on some of their trails, what’s happening with wonky trails/mileage including the CDT, the future of FarOut, and even their affiliation with Keith “Fozzy” Foskett. Like beer but not the buzz? We even discussed NA beer. Join us for this in-depth interview on everyone’s favorite long trail phone app.

Episode Summary: In this special “Fireside Chats” episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp, we literally sit down with Sam “Cuppa” Sindall and Felix “Jedi” Schlichdaz in our recording studio to discuss their hike on the CDT this year (yup, we scooped them in for an interview mid-hike), their roots in backpacking from Europe all the way to the great wilderness of North America, what it’s like to carry MULTIPLE pairs of jeans, cotton shirts, and a non-waterproof tent along a hike in the UK, get a temporary Visa, loss on trail, and simply how the serendipity of life and a long dirt path can forge unbreakable friendships for a lifetime. From clinicaltrials to the tale of the “stick lady” this episode will keep you engaged the entire time. And guess what?! It’s only the first half.

Curious what sleeping mat/mattress/pad is right for you? Ever wonder what exactly that arbitrary looking “R” value is? Think your pad sounds like a spent potato chip bag every time you turn over on it? Can you slap a piece of tape on a leaking mattress and think it’s good as new? We discuss ALL these things, and more, and just how much effort goes into making those kingpins of the hiking/backpacking sleep system world: the NeoAir Xtherm, NeoAir Xlite, and the Uberlite. Episode Summary: In this episode of “Yeti Walks Into Basecamp” we speak with the Subaru/LNT team, Jesse &Elena. They spend some 11 months traveling the U.S. to teach and preach the message of leave no trace (LNT) while camping along the way. Think that’s a lot of gas use? Well, there may be a change in store there too! In this first half of a 2-part episode, we cover some of the first 2 LNT principles (there are 7 in total) and discuss a lesser known, visibly stunning trail in Hawaii- the Kalalau Trail (a ~22 mi. out and back). Sit in for this first half and become a semiprofessional in LNT.

Episode Summary: In this episode of “Yeti Walks Into Basecamp” we talk about water, because, well…water is life! This is the first of a two-part series speaking on filters, plastics, water bladders, water sources that aren’t so great (and how to handle them), and even bug sprays/treatments. We sit in with Katie “Oats” Houston, the Community Manager for Sawyer Products. You know Sawyer, they make the renowned SawyerSqueeze that, what, like 85% of hikers use on long trails. And, there may even be a D&D D20 involved. If you know, you know. It’s a great conversation with a LOT of sage advice, so give it a go wherever you listen to podcasts.

Episode Summary: In this episode of “Yeti Walks Into Basecamp” we discuss our 2-day hike of the “41” mile lollipop/loop trail called The Big and Little Dominguez Loop from Alltrails. We do this before hopping back into telling our PCT overarching story, and to offer two new things! We will be video recording future episodes to get those on our YouTube channel (link below, for those of you who like you watch your podcast- and I know the video quality is bad, but the next episode will be far better), and we will also be including more guests to listen in and ask questions, just because it adds a bit more spice. On today’s episode, we feature a returning guest, Michelle Nagle, from our E11: Fireside Chats / Unsung Heroes. Give them both a listen and let us know what you think!

Episode Summary: In this episode of Yeti Walks Into Basecamp we cover a lengthy question of the day that involves a lot of personal unpacking for us as we detail our experiences with life off trail. We then interview two of the unsung heroes from our PCT 2022 hike, Michelle Nagle and Amber Gee. Michelle and Amber ran our social media accounts and assisted with shipments of resupply boxes/gear, respectively. They were a vital part of our journey, and we felt they needed some good old recognition.

Q&A Session #1
We received several questions from one of our Instagram followers, tahoe_dynamite. Thanks for your questions, tahoe! This shorter episode answers those questions and gives our best advice for hikers to come and hikers already out there.
Topics: PCT books, supplements, protein powder, and resupply locations on trail.
Questions asked:
1 // Books to read…did you read all the hiking PCT books or just Yogi?
Answer: A few, but all on Audible.
A / Free Outside: A Trek Against Time and Distance by Jeff Garmire
B / The Trail Provides: A Boy’s Memoir of Thru-Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail by David Smart
C / The Last Englishman by Keith Foskett
D / Journeys North: The Pacific Crest Trail by Barney Scout Mann
E / Hikertrash: Life on the PCT by Erin Miller
F / Thru-Hiking Will Break Your Heart: And Adventure on the Pacific Crest Trail by Carrot Quinn
2 // Supplements, protein powder, etc?
Answer: Supplements were iron tablets, salt tabs, some Airborne tablets at the beginning, but largely sugar. It’s not a supplement, but Basecamp needed to take sugar “shots” on occasion to keep going. For protein powder, yes, we would drink protein powder (usually collagen) mixed with hot cocoa or other sweet mixes for desert at the end of each day.
3 // Do you have the list of towns that didn’t have a lot of grocery stores or places to get food? I’m veggie, so I’m very much worried I cannot sustain with what is available in certain towns and I’ve seen some places that had a decent general store with little options for me.
Answer: Every town or resort that we stopped at had options for food resupply. Ramen is everywhere, but you will definitely be able to get “something” at each place, even if it’s just junk food. If we hiked the PCT again, we wouldn’t have sent ourselves a single box of food. One clutch food to check out is dehydrated refried beans.

As PCT and other long-distance hikers begin their 2023 ventures, we wanted to dedicate this podcast to them and the experiences they will have on their trail.
Following a two-part article written by Yeti Legs titled, “Uphill Battles: Mental and Emotional Challenges of a PCT Thru-Hiker”, this podcast reviews those articles as we give personal experiences we had throughout our PCT hike in 2022.
To read both full articles on The Trek, please follow the links below:
Uphill Battles: Mental and Emotional Challenges of a PCT Thru-Hiker, Part 1 of 2
Uphill Battles: Mental and Emotional Challenges of a PCT Thru-Hiker, Part 2 of 2
Topics: This two-part podcast covers the mental and emotional challenges we faced along those 2653 miles of the PCT and how we coped with them. The four areas covered are the physical, the environmental, the social, and the intrapersonal (or within) aspects of a thru-hike. We discuss the hardships and the wonderful moments we experienced along the way, the burdens or blessings they placed on us, and what we recommend for upcoming hikers to “equip” themselves with before and during their hikes.
