I love that question. Thanks for asking, Bob. This is UX Question number 19 and I am Ben Judy.

How can I recession-proof my UX career? Economic conditions will change, the job market will become hot or cold, hiring for UX people will spike and then come the layoffs. Thus has it ever been. You can’t control any of that. You can only influence what you can influence.

I have three quick pieces of advice.

These are tips that have served me well throughout my career. I started my career in web design right as the dot-com bubble was bursting, I worked through the recession after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, I joined a UX team at another company while the U.S. was engaged in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I’ve seen all kinds of other macro-economic and social uncertainty since then. Here’s how I have stayed gainfully employed as a UX professional.

One: build a broad skill set. As I said in answering question 18, you don’t necessarily need to write code to be a UX designer. But the more skills you have, the more valuable you will be—especially when your employer needs to cut staff. They’re going to keep high performers who can do a lot of things well.

Two: learn the business. Employers will look very differently at a UX designer who knows nothing about the business and how it makes money, or what its real mission is, compared to a designer who gets the business, who knows how to help the business earn money, or what the goals and the strategy of the org are. Don’t just do great UX research and design work; position yourself in the center of the revenue stream and visibly contribute to what makes the organization successful.

Three: network, network, network. Build your professional network like that is your real job. I hear a lot of career advice along the lines of, “advocate for yourself.” Speak up for yourself because nobody else will. That’s terrible advice. Yes, advocate for yourself, but it is far, far better to have other people advocate for you. The way you get other people to recommend you and vouch for you is to earn their trust, demonstrate the qualities of a professional, and be helpful, friendly, and memorable.

Identify those key people who you admire as UX professionals and leaders, and stay in touch with them. I’m an introvert, but when I go to a design conference, I become an extrovert for a day or two, because those relationships are important.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, Kathryn. This is UX Question number 18 and I am Ben Judy.

Do I need to write code to be a UX designer? A very common question, very hotly debated.

If you confuse UX and UI design, then you might give a hard yes. But tell me why you need to write code to conduct user research and design a user journey map or user flow diagram.

My opinion is no, you do not. With an asterisk.

Making UX design choices requires a different set of skills and a different headspace than writing computer code. UX decision making is predicated on human empathy, whereas writing code is just getting a computer to work the way it was designed to work. Empathy is not needed.

So my answer is no, but my asterisk is that often organizations—especially small companies—need generalists who can do both. If you don’t have enough budget to hire a designer and a programmer, you have to hire one person to do both jobs.

Even if that’s not the case, though, it will really help if you know some things about the technology you’re designing for. This will enhance your collaboration with the people who write code and you can avoid making a fool of yourself.

I remember arguing with a graphic designer who clearly had no idea how websites were built. And he drew little graphic elements that looked like acorns to function as radio buttons. Not only ignorant of interaction patterns and usability affordances, but also how hard it would be to code a functional web form with radio buttons that looked like acorns. This was in the early days of CSS when browsers were not very capable.

Years later I designed some components for the US Web Design System. And I absolutely had to know some things about HTML and CSS and the technical aspects of accessibility, in order to collaborate effectively with the developers for that web design system.

So it depends on the kind of work you’re doing as well. If you’re creating content web pages, meh. If you’re creating a robust design system, maybe some knowledge of UI code is necessary.

But my basic answer remains: no, you don’t need to learn to code. UX is a different skill set. You need to learn how to collaborate effectively with the people who write code, and it helps to be curious and learn as much as you can about everything, especially the technology in which your designs will be built.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, Emily. This is UX Question number 17 and I am Ben Judy.

What kind of company should I work in as a UX designer? Well, there are many different ways we could define a ‘kind of company,’ so let’s narrow that down. I’ll talk about four different kinds of organizations. There are pros and cons to each, so let’s quickly go through them.

A for-profit company might kind of company that comes to mind. What’s good about doing UX in a for-profit is: if it’s a successful company it probably has a lot of money and resources. And that means a design budget to provide a decent salary, incentives, and resources for UX designers to do their job. What’s not so good about a for-profit is the for-profit part. The business is always going to make decisions for the good of the business over and against what’s best for end-users. Good UX can be a competitive advantage, and that’s the fine line you have to walk.

Nonprofits are the second type. Nonprofit organizations can be wonderful places to do UX work if your personal values align with the mission of the nonprofit. Your work can be very meaningful and fulfilling. However, meagre budgets and a reliance on donations will often limit staffing and resourcing for UX.

Startups are a third kind of org where you could do UX work. Because startups are small, you might gain more direct influence on the product and business strategies than you would in a larger, more established org, and that can be a lot of fun. But you’re just as likely to work long hours, pouring your blood, sweat, and tears into the startup, only to watch the company fail and die, or get bought out and consumed by an org with a very different scale and culture.

Client services is another category. This would be digital agencies or consulting firms. Early in your career, you can gain broad experience and build your portfolio quickly as you hop from one client project to the next. But the work is deadline-driven, long nights and weekends aren’t uncommon. Burnout is high in agency environments. And the client is always right, even when they aren’t. Ugh.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, Kira. This is UX Question number 16 and I am Ben Judy.

Can I transition into UX from another career field. Yes, absolutely. People do it all the time. I think many if not most people in UX today did something else before they became a UX designer or researcher or strategist. UX is multidisciplinary, it’s a melting pot of all kinds of skills and approaches around human-centric digital design. So, you can come from almost any professional background and bring that knowledge and experience into UX. Just don’t make this one mistake.

I had a teacher in high school who taught a careers class. And he did something that made an impact. I remember it. He wrote three letters on the whiteboard in front of the classroom, and the three letters were, “DLY.” He wrote DLY and he said, this is an acronym. What do you think this means? What might DLY stand for?

We all took turns guessing. But he wouldn’t tell us what it meant. He only said, this is the best piece of career advice I can give you. But come back next week and I’ll tell you what DLY means. So all weekend we were thinking about it.

And next week came and he said, if you remember nothing else from this class, remember DLY. And we’re dying with anticipation and curiosity. What does DLY mean? He finally told us: “Don’t Limit Yourself.” That was his big piece of career advice. And sure enough, I don’t remember anything else from that class. But I remember Don’t Limit Yourself.

By the way, that’s a great teaching technique. Maybe I should do that I with UX Questions. I’m going to start doing that. I’ll ask the next question at the end, and I’ll give you my answer a few days later. So you’ll all be thinking about it.

So anyway, can I transition into UX from another career field? Yes. Teachers, developers, technologists of all stripes, graphic designers, accountants, retail store associates, corporate recruiters, whatever you do now can be a springboard into UX. Many, many, many of the people I have mentored through Designlab were or are career transition people, pivoting from whatever they have done and they discovered UX.

The common denominator among those who successfully execute that career transition is, they didn’t limit themselves. They believed they could do it, and they worked hard and pursued UX until they got that first job actually doing it. You can, too.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, George. This is UX Question number 15 and I am Ben Judy.

Is a career in UX right for me? Well, choosing to commit to a career field is tough. You’re trying to look down the corridor of time and determine if you want to do the same kind of work for decades.

No exact formula exists for making this decision, but I’ll tell you how I arrived at my career decision—and I’ll give you some factors to consider.

I did not start my career path in UX. When I went to college at age 18, I went for a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting. I was certain I wanted to pursue a career in radio, TV, and film production. But a funny thing happened along the way.

See, I had also been interested in the World Wide Web and I taught myself HTML and I started building websites when I was in high school. It hadn’t occurred to me that I could have a career doing this, but I got a job making websites for a software company even while I was a sophomore in college.

That led to a realization that it might actually be easier to get a job doing web design than to get a job in media production. And that led me to a job at Travelocity.com where I encountered a multi-disciplinary UX team, and I knew I wanted to do this UX thing.

So ask yourself, are you already doing some aspect of UX work, or something UX-adjacent, and enjoying it? Even as a hobby? All it took for me was a slight pivot from my hobby in web design into a career in UX design. Are you doing some kind of research that involves studying how people behave? Do you like to design things?

Do you kinda like digital technology, but you’re even more interested in making the human experience better? Are you frustrated by bad user experiences and you want to do something about it? Sometimes great careers begin from a divine discontent, a place of frustration that the world is not as it should be.

Do you like solving problems for people that involve human-computer interaction, driven by human empathy? If so, UX design might be for you.

If you like to make money, go into business. If you like solving problems but you want to take people out of the equation, go into technology. If the intersection of business and systems and tech and people is where you want to work, pursue UX. And if you just like to shout nonsense into the void, start a YouTube channel or a podcast.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, Avery. This is UX Question number 14 and I am Ben Judy.

Who are some important UX experts I should follow? Well, definitely you should follow UX professionals who you find to be knowledgeable, highly skilled, good communicators, and with a perspective you appreciate.

There are lots of ‘big names’ in this profession. Some folks have made a name for themselves by being early pioneers and I’ve mentioned some of their names in previous episodes. Don Norman, Jakob Nielsen, Alan Cooper, and Jesse James Garrett are all authors and consultants who helped define UX as we came to know it.

Steve Krug, Luke Wroblewski, Andy Budd, Bill Buxton, and Jared Spool are also ‘familiar old names’ to those of us who have been working in this field for a couple decades or more. When they speak, we listen, because they’re published authors and, frankly they have consistently been the keynote speakers at UX conferences over the past two or three decades.

But so far I’ve only named men. Fortunately, any list of top UX experts now is a more diverse cast of characters than in the past.

Leah Buley, Indi Young, Kaaren Hanson, Kim Goodwin, Jamie Levy, and Erika Hall are all highly accomplished and well known women in the UX field, each with their own specialty.

I could go on naming names, and no doubt some of you are thinking, “but why hasn’t he mentioned so and so yet?” Well, I’ve got to keep this under three minutes. Here’s the thing you need to know about UX ‘experts.’

They’re human beings. Most of them are very hard working, intelligent, energetic people who have applied themselves to their trade for a long time. Most of them are truly humble and empathetic and eager to contribute to the success of other UX professionals. A few of them are shameless self-promoters, and once in a while they can be jerks. That’s why we shouldn’t make them out to be heroes. Don’t meet your heroes, you’ll be disappointed.

Avery, you asked, who are some important UX experts I should follow? Well, go follow the names I just mentioned, you’ll be better for it. They’re all brilliant.

And I don’t like to critique the questions I receive for this show. I truly do love your question. But I gotta say, I think I have a better question in return for you.

How can I learn from experienced UX professionals? I’ve answered previous questions about the best way to learn about UX and where to find a good UX mentor.

But I like the way this question is phrased, how can I learn from some pros? It made me reflect on the ways I have learned from other, seasoned professionals throughout my career. What did I do, perhaps even unknowingly, that enabled me to learn from them? I came up with a few tips.

First, have deep conversations. UX pros love to talk about the intricacies of our work. We love to answer questions and dissect the problems inherent in our work. And the gnarlier and more tricky the problem, the better. So ask UX pros questions like, “what’s a big challenge you’ve faced recently in your work? What made that so challenging?” And dive into the deep end of the pool. You’re bound to learn something there.

Second, connect in community. Join Slack and Discord communities. Go to meetups and conferences and don’t just ‘attend.’ Ask questions. Engage people in conversation in the hallways, over lunch, over dinner. Seek out professional communities that foster great conversations among the participants. Find your tribe.

Third, learn from the failures and struggles of seasoned UX professionals. What did they screw up that they would do differently next time? What was harder than they expected it to be when they started a project in the past? These conversations will teach you more than their successes and what went well.

Fourth, have them show you their work. We don’t do this enough in our field. And yeah, there are issues of privacy and proprietary information that belongs to the company or the client, so it isn’t always possible for a designer to show their work. But seize every opportunity to put your eyes on real artifacts and processes and see how others actually do their day to day work.

Tip five, learn their shortcuts. Early career UX people think they need to do every step of the design process exactly as they were taught, but experienced pros know when to skip a step or do something in a hasty fashion, without affecting the overall outcome.

Finally, learn from how they learn. The best way to learn UX is with whatever method of learning works best for you, but to fully explore those options, ask others how they build their knowledge and do ongoing professional development.

How long will it take to learn the basics of UX? Well, if we’re just talking about head knowledge of essential UX theory, you can read a book, watch a few YouTube videos, and get the gist of UX in a day or two.

Actually learning to do the work of a UX practitioner will take much longer. That’s because UX is a multidisciplinary career field. Being a UX professional, even at a basic level, means you learn how to practice experience strategy, user research, information architecture, interaction design, visual design, usability analysis, and more. UX work is complex and multi-faceted.

Realistically, you need to practice that holistic skill set of UX design and research and analysis for at least two or three years to begin to really build basic competency. People entering this career field are often dismayed to find very few, truly entry-level job postings. Even job postings for junior level UX positions say you need to have at least two or three years’ experience. This is why: you just have to practice it for that long to even begin to learn the basics.

However, there are things you can do accelerate your learning. Working across different industries can expose you to how UX work is different, for example in a highly regulated industry such as financial technology (fintech) versus, say, digital publishing. That’s why agencies are a good place to work early in your UX career because you can get that broad experience quickly.

Another way to accelerate your learning is to practice the different sub-skills or sub-disciplines within UX. Seek out projects and opportunities to do the things you’re not experienced in. If you have a solid grasp of the basics of user interface visual design, take the role of user researcher on your next project.

You can also accelerate toward mastery of the basics by continuing to invest in ongoing professional education. Go back to episode 8 and hear me talk about ways to learn about UX. Keep learning.

And connect with other UX professionals in online communities, Slack channels, Discord channels, social media, Linkedin discussions—good ones, not ignorant rants, there’s plenty of that—but also local meetups and conferences.

Hey, Malcolm Gladwell popularized the notion that it takes 10,000 hours of intensive practice to become a master at anything. That’s over two and a half years of full-time work. The good news is, only takes another two and half years to become completely jaded and cynical about UX work, and then the rest of your career, you just fight to stay connected to what drew you to UX in the first place.

Where can I find a good UX mentor? Well, anywhere you can find someone who is experienced, insightful, personable, and candid.

Back in episode 8 I answered the question, what is the best way to learn about UX? And I mentioned mentoring as one of many ways to learn. I mentioned ADPList and MentorCruise as two places you can find a user experience professional to mentor you. Just Google the phrase, “find a UX mentor,” scroll past the ads, and you’ll find dozens of websites dedicated to helping you connect with a mentor.

I also talked about bootcamps. Episode 6 answered, what is a UX bootcamp? And some bootcamps offer 1-on-1 mentorship as part of their program. I’ve been mentoring for several years with Designlab and I love being a mentor.

You can also try to find a mentor where you work. If you’re employed at a company that also employs UX designers, see if one of them would be willing to be your professional mentor. I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career if not for coworkers who were more experienced than me, taking me under their wing and showing me the ropes on the job.

Local meetups can be another good place. If you want someone you can meet with face to face to mentor you, try your local UX Professionals Association chapter or look at event sites like eventbrite.com or meetup.com for local gatherings of UX people. The kinds of people who take the time to attend those events are often the kinds of people who make good mentors. They’re enthusiastic about the career field and are willing to connect and share skills, knowledge, and expertise. Since the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, of course, many of these events have moved online so you can connect with potential mentors via online meetups, as well.

Linkedin is another way. Just search until you find UX professionals who have the work background and skill set you want in a mentor, and send them a message. The worst they can do is ignore you or say no.

Hey, wherever you find your UX mentor, just be sure when they’re answering you questions, they should be quick about. You want to get your answers in three minutes or less, otherwise, why bother?

What are some good web sites about UX? Well, I’ve got a handful of recommendations for you. There are obviously thousands upon thousands of UX blogs, online magazines, resource indexes, toolkits, professional portfolio sites, you name it.

I tend to gravitate toward sites and authors and communities who have been around for a while. Expertise in this field comes from experience. So learn from those who know.

A List Apart was one of the first online magazines or blogs I read when I was first learning how to make websites. I’ve always enjoyed its focus on web standards and best practices. Yes, this is from the same people who publish books as A Book Apart, but alistapart.com is much older. The new articles are as timely as ever, though and after years and years of being around, the topical index of articles is deep.

Nielsen Norman Group. It’s a no-frills site chock full of research-backed articles on a wealth of UX and usability related topics. Always great stuff.

UX Magazine. Does what it says on the cover. Solid articles from working practitioners.

If you want an aggregator—a site that pulls content from lot of different sources around the web—I like Sidebar. They’ll email you five, curated articles each day on a wide variety of not just UX topics, but all kinds of design and development related subjects. Or you can go to sidebar.io and browse the categories of back articles.

Finally, I recommend Baymard Instititue. This is my niche pick. Baymard Institute conducts in-depth usability research for ecommerce. If you are designing anything like an ecommerce website or app, you need to check them out. They publish a lot of well researched studies for free, as well as a lot of content you need to pay for to access, but it’s well worth it.

Hey, there’s lots of nonsense on the web. Find the experts who have been around a long time, have dedicated themselves to the practice of user experience, and have proven themselves. Don’t just subscribe to some rando who has like, a handful of articles on his site and ten YouTube videos and calls himself a design expert.

What are some good books about UX? Well, hundreds of books have been published over the past few decades about various aspects of user experience. There are, however, a few foundational classics that I always recommend to anyone who doesn’t already have deep familiarity with UX.

Here are my top five book recommendations:

  1. The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman. This book will teach you not to blame the user, but to demand that intuitive guidance should be inherent in the design of all things. Originally published in 1988, a revised and expanded edition was published in 2013.
  2. The Elements of User Experience by Jesse James Garrett. I got a copy of this probably around 2004 and the diagram of the five elements helped me form my understanding of what UX was all about. This one also has an updated edition.
  3. Don’t Make Me Think by Steve Krug helps you understand why simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, as the old saying goes. This one also has been revised and revisited by the author. I don’t know where my copy is. I think I let someone borrow it.
  4. Designing Visual Interfaces by Kevin Mullet. The examples are outdated, but it will teach you that design isn’t just intuitive, there are principles, patterns, rules and psychological theory behind good visual UI design. Which is so vital to good UX design.
  5. UX Strategy by Jamie Levy which organizes a very fuzzy, complex topic into four simple categories you can begin to make sense of.

Okay, a bonus 6th book because it’s been so influential for me: Org Design for Design Orgs. Which probably won’t mean much until you get into a design practice leadership position, but it’s a very thought provoking book.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to go back and read the older books, to get a grasp on foundational principles that are timeless.

Sure, you can find more modern books than these five that I mentioned. Books with patterns and examples that are more recent. But those books won’t do a better job of teaching you why. They can show you how, but if you want to know the why behind being a UX designer or researcher, go back to the old books that have stood the test of time. Then you can go forward to more recent publications.

If you’re really itching for more contemporary book, I recommend two publishers. A Book Apart and Rosenfeld Media. Links are in the description.

But you know, reading an entire book can takes days. Wouldn’t you rather just get the answers you need in three minutes or less? Yeah, I thought you would.

What is the best way to learn about user experience? Well, whatever method of learning works best for you is the best way. So let’s explore five different ways you can learn about UX.

One, you can go to college. Yeah, you can pursue graduate degree. Or, if you’re just starting out, a two or for year undergraduate degree—an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at your local college or university. Now when I went to college in 1998 there were no user experience degree programs. I ended up double majoring and one of my majors was this thing called “Multimedia technologies” which was about as close as I could come to UX at the time.

A few colleges today offer an undergrad and graduate degree programs in UX or something very closely related to user experience. What’s even more common is a certificate program. Something less intensive than a full degree, but certificate training that will teach you the essentials quickly.

Which brings up the second way you can learn about UX: bootcamps. These are online programs that promise to take you from knowing nothing about UX to being fully ready for your first job in about three months to a year. Go back and check out Question #6 to hear more about bootcamps.

Third, you can find a mentor. There are now lots of platforms online for designers to build on their skills and connect with mentors. A few examples are ADPList and MentorCruise. Of course, your mileage will vary as to how good your mentor is in guiding you toward what you want to learn.

Fourth, work with other designers. This doesn’t necessarily mean, “get a job” working alongside other designers. You can do volunteer projects or collaborate on freelance work. Try to find other designers who have different skills than you do. If you’re stronger in visual design, find one who is better at information architecture, for example.

Finally, you can teach yourself UX design. There are thousands of self-taught UX designers in this field. And today, there are more resources than ever: YouTube videos, books, podcasts, blogs, newsletters, self paced online training courses.

The most important thing is to find a way to learn that you enjoy and that you can afford. Don’t go into deep financial debt to build your UX knowledge and skills.

Come to think of it, if only there was a YouTube channel where you could get answers to questions about UX. And not too long, either… say, in three minutes or less...

I love that question thanks for asking, Sarah. This is UX Question number 7 and I am Ben Judy.

What is a good definition of user experience? Well, Don Norman, who is considered to be the person who coined the term User Experience, said that UX encompasses, quote, “all aspects of the end-user's interaction with the company, its services, and its products,” end quote.

Now, I’m not sure I can come up with a better, one-sentence definition for UX. Although, I do have some critique of that definition.

I think it’s too broad. “All aspects” of my interactions with a company, its services, and its products. I don’t find it useful to cast such a wide net.

In practice, UX professionals tend to focus on human experiences with technology like mobile phone apps, tablet apps, websites, desktop computer software. And other electronic tech. I’ve designed a digital kitchen display system for a restaurant chain, where the input device was a specialized keyboard called a bump bar. So, I’m designing the user experience for the kitchen worker, in that case. But I don’t think UX is all of their interactions with a company. The interpersonal interactions those restaurant employees had with their shift manager, I don’t consider that to be UX. It’s helpful context, but it’s not the user experience with the digital product. So UX isn’t all aspects, that’s too grandiose in my opinion.

That definition also mentions services as well as products. There is a discipline called Service Design that, in practice, is broader in scope than UX. Service design would encompass workflows and processes and policies within an organization. Things beyond user experience.

Human factors is an older discipline closely linked to ergonomics and physiology. Think about your experience sitting in a chair at a table: your satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the height of the chair and the table, the wood grain pattern, how comfortable the seat and back of the chair feel to you. Are you using the chair and the table, therefore that's a user experience? I guess, academically, but that’s not what we usually think of when we talk about UX. Again, it’s digital things.

Norman's definition also mentions a company, whereas other types of organizations hire UX practitioners. A government agency, for example. Not a company.

Hey, defining user experience is like staring at a magic eye poster. Stare long enough and you'll see something come into focus. But try to describe it to someone else and they'll think you're nuts.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, Levar. This is UX Question number 6 and I am Ben Judy.

What is a UX bootcamp? Well, it’s a training program that equips you with the foundational knowledge and skills to become a UX professional and get your first UX job.

The training is usually centered around a custom curriculum and most are entirely online, so you can learn from anywhere.

A typical UX bootcamp will promise to take you from knowing nothing about UX to being fully ready for your first job in a pretty short time frame, usually between three months to a year.

Students will usually participate in intensive, project-based training and perhaps some direct mentoring from a more experienced UX professional. The cost can also range quite a bit, anywhere from free to nearly $20,000.

These UX bootcamps are a relatively new phenomenon. They certainly didn’t exist when I started my design career around the turn of the millennium. But they’ve become wildly popular as a faster, cheaper, and more focused alternative to education, when compared to, say, a two or four year degree from a traditional university or college.

The number of bootcamps has exploded with dozens to choose from. Some of the popular names include Springboard, Flatiron School, CareerFoundry, General Assembly, and Designlab. Full disclosure: I am a mentor through Designlab. Some big tech companies are getting in on the action: Google offers a UX Design Professional Certificate that entails 6 months of self-paced, part-time study.

There are some criticisms of UX bootcamps. Some say they overpromise and underdeliver in regard to actually landing a job. Some bootcamps actually make a qualified guarantee that you will get a job after completing their course. Your mileage may vary.

Another criticism is that the curriculum tends to focus more on user interface design skills rather than more comprehensive UX skills that are user-focused as opposed to product-focused. But I think that’s because basic UI design skills are easier to teach, and it’s what employers generally expect, anyway, at the entry level.

I think these bootcamps are a great option for career switchers. They can be a good option for younger people with little or no professional experience, but these bootcamps will not teach you how to be a motivated professional, or how to be a good employee.

Mostly, I’m just jealous that these things exist now, because I came up the hard way. I was a self-taught designer and I had to grind and build my network for a few years before I got a contracting gig as part of a larger UX team where I finally began learning on the job from people who kindly showed me the ropes. Kids these days with their bootcamps and their bitcoin metaverse and their… get off my lawn, you whippersnappers!

What is a UX portfolio? Well, it’s a collection of artifacts, deliverables, case studies, or other evidence of UX professional work. A portfolio is designed to showcase your skills and convince recruiters, hiring managers, and potential clients that you are the UX professional they should hire or collaborate with.

The content of your portfolio should be UX project work you performed or created. So if you’re a UX designer, your portfolio should showcase design projects you worked on, featuring artifacts you created such as flow diagrams, journey maps, user interface design at various levels of fidelity, and so on. If you are a UX researcher, your portfolio should showcase the research methods and activities you conducted, your synthesized findings and recommendations, and the impact you had on the product strategy or the UX design.

UX work is often very collaborative, so it’s important to explain what you did as an individual contributor versus what other team members did.

Sometimes you may write a detailed case study that explains every step of your UX design process. In other cases, you may choose to simply highlight a few important aspects of your work and show just a small selection of artifacts, without a more detailed narrative.

Portfolios can be crafted in various formats. Some UX professionals create a PDF document so their portfolio can be emailed or attached to a job application. It’s also common to create a portfolio web site, perhaps using a site builder like Webflow or Squarespace. Some web publishing platforms are more geared toward showcasing entire case studies—UX Folio is one example. Others are more geared toward displaying individual design artifacts without much explanation or context—Dribbble and Behance are two examples.

My perspective on UX portfolios is that they are critically important to landing a UX job, especially early in your career. Hiring managers will look at your portfolio even more closely than your resume. Later in your career, it may matter less as your professional network grows, your reputation is established, and you may be in more of a design leadership or strategy role.

Finally, a UX portfolio is an opportunity for you to show the design that could have been, not what was actually built after your efforts were utterly crushed by the merciless gears of capitalism that prioritized profit and speed over quality.

So that’s what a UX portfolio is.

What is a good user experience? Well, to assess the quality of a user’s experience you can rely on principles and you can rely on frameworks.

Principles or heuristics are general rules of thumb. Most of the time, in the right hands, they can help you quickly determine if you are directionally pointing toward a good experience for most users, or not.

Measurement frameworks, coupled with a good strategy, can help you actually gather data and quantify whether your UX is good or bad.

Here are some examples.

An example of a set of UX principles would be 10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design by Jakob Nielsen. I’ll put links to all of these in the description or in the show notes. Nielsen’s list includes things like: Visibility of system status, Error prevention, Recognition rather than recall. If you use these principles to critique your design, you can get a long way toward achieving a good user experience.

Other lists of heuristics include Bruce Tognazinni’s First Principles of Interaction Design and the International Standards Organization publication ISO 9241–110 Ergonomics of human-system interaction — Part 110: Interaction principles. These principles can help if you take the time to evaluate a product design against them.

And that’s a really important skill, knowing how to critique UX design. To identify common patterns that add up to either a good experience or a bad experience, most of the time, and to be articulate about it.

But what if you feel you really need proof? Not just an expert’s eye and a set of generic principles, but actual measurement against some objective standard?

Well, that’s where measurement frameworks can help.

Examples of such frameworks are the System Usability Scale which has been around a long time. Or, a more recent framework I rather like is the HEART framework, in which you establish goals, signals and metrics for five categories: happiness, engagement, adoption, retention, and task success. Again, links in the description.

Finally, if you really want to know whether your UX is good or bad, just ask the product owner for their unqualified opinion, because, I mean, they’re the product owner! Obviously, they’re just smarter than everyone else. Yeah.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, Julie. This is UX Question number 3 and I am Ben Judy.

What is user research? Well, it’s studying and learning about people who use a product in order to make human-centered design decisions.

Some popular user research methods include: surveys, interviews, direct observation (just watching people do stuff), diary studies, focus groups, analyzing data from software analytics that tracks how people interact with a website or an app—these are some basic research methods. And there are more esoteric ones like tree testing, card sorting, and so on. If you’ve heard of any of these things, you know these are just means of learning about people and their behaviors and attitudes.

But there are a few interesting aspects of user research I’d like to call out.

First, the reason you’re doing these user research activities is to inform and support UX design. You can go back to question two and listen to me answer the question, What is UX design? You don’t do user research for the fun of it. It’s in support of a design process, to make better informed design decisions.

Another aspect of user research is that the data you collect can either be qualitative or quantitative, or some mix of the two. Any good user researcher will know their way around gathering and synthesizing numerical data—stuff you can quantify—and mushy, fuzzy, human qualitative insights. And user research involves knowing when to lean one way or the other, qual or quant.

Another dichotomy in user research is attitudes and behaviors. In answering question 1, what is user experience, I said, there are two important aspects of UX: subjectively, how the user feels about the experience with the product, and objectively the usability—does it work for the user? So in user research you set out to discover what are the attitudes and feelings, and what are the behaviors, what people observably do.

When I worked in UX at Intuit, we were trained to look for the Aha! moments. To find surprising insights about users that would shift our product strategy. Verifying what you already believe is fine but surprise is better.

I love that question. Thanks for asking, Marcus. This is UX Question number 2 and I am Ben Judy.

What is UX design? Well, it’s making choices that describe the functionality, content, appearance, and various other attributes of a product (usually software or some digital product) with the intent to improve the relative quality of a person’s interaction with that product.

That’s kind of a mouthful, so let’s break this down. What is UX design? There are actually two things we need to define there: UX and design.

You might remember question 1 was, what is user experience? And I said, it’s the relative quality of a person’s interaction with a product.

But what is design? This is a question that designers can get philosophical about. One definition of design is from Jared Spool, a well known UX consultant and speaker, and he says, “design is the rendering of intent.” A UX designer will probably render or draw diagrams that describe a user journey, or a user’s flow through an application. A UI designer will draw picture of what the software interface should look like.

But if you’re going to draw plans or describe aspects of what an experience with a product should be like, you have to fundamentally do three things:

First, understand your users. What are their needs and goals, what do they know or not know, how do they feel, what is the context in which they are using the product. Build empathy with the user.

Second, you have to generate design options. You can’t very well design anything without forming ideas about the ideal future state, and in UX design, those ideas should be informed by understanding and empathy for the user.

Third, you have to make choices. UX design is informed but it should also be opinionated. Having generated hopefully many solution ideas, you now must choose a subset of ideas are the best of the bunch. In the practice of UX design, you mainly do this by testing the design with users. And this is an iterative thing, you don’t just ideate once and make one choice. You do loops of ideation and testing and deciding, while continuously learning about the user and building deeper empathy for them.

So if the product is a website, you’re trying to understand who is visiting this site, what are they doing, how should they feel. There are problems to solve for the user. You’re producing design artifacts that describe ideas about what the holistic experience should be like. And you collaborate with others to decide which of your solution ideas should be implemented.

And you cry a lot and regret all of your life choices.

That’s UX design.

What is user experience? Well, it’s the relative quality of a person’s interaction with a product, typically a software application, website, or some other digital product.

I can think of many ways to expand on this, many different perspectives to take.

From one point of view is, a user experience is something we all have often without even realizing it. When you use something—some product, a digital or computerized product or system, you have an experience with it.

These days almost all of us have an iPhone or an Android phone. Think about how you feel while you’re using it, what it allows you to do, its utility, and how easy or how difficult it is to use sometimes. Think about this device and how you interact with it, and how it interacts with you.

You, as a human being, have an experience with your phone. Or a tablet computer. Or a website. Or laptop or desktop computer software. Or your television. Or the control panel for your microwave. Et cetera.

You have feelings about that experience—it’s either pleasant and enjoyable to use, or it’s frustrating or disappointing.

And the software or the product you’re using is more or less usable. Some apps on my phone make it very easy to accomplish what I want to do. Some apps are very hard or maybe impossible to use.

So these are two important aspects of UX: subjectively, how the user feels about the experience with the product, and objectively the usability—does it work for the user?

From another point of view, it’s a journey. You were doing something before you started using the software, you used it, and then you went on to do something else. When we look at the holistic user experience, we’re looking at that entire before, during, and after journey that you undertook.

From another point of view, UX is a career field. I’ve been a UX professional for many years and I have many colleagues and friends who do what I do. We are UX practitioners. Because a user experience is something we can observe and investigate. And we can seek to improve those experiences though better product design. So we are hired by companies and various kinds of organizations to make user experiences with their products better.

So that’s what we mean by, “user experience” or UX. It’s the relative quality of a person’s interaction with a product, usually software or some digital product. And more often than not, the quality of the experience is way, way worse than it could be. Because we can’t have nice things.
