Psalm 127:4 says, "Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the sons born in one's youth." A skilled warrior knows how to use his arrow, but children can be difficult to teach at times. The focus of this podcast is to equip parents to tune their bow and become skilled warriors as they train their children to go into the world. Join Matthew Wilbanks, Youth Ministry Coordinator at Longbranch Community Baptist Church in Midlothian, TX, and Tim Rose, youth pastor at First Odessa in Odessa, TX, as they discuss family discipleship as the Bible teaches. Guests, jokes, and a deep dive into Scripture can be expected, so get ready to tune your bow!
How do you know if someone is a true Christian? A lot of people claim to be believers, but their lives seem to go against their claim. In this episode, Tim and Matt discuss how Scripture gives us this answer. If you are doubting your faith or salvation, entrust it to Jesus! Depending on Him is required, so study the Bible and see what else God requires (hint: Romans 10:1-13 is a good place to start).

Parents make a lot of difficult decisions for the betterment of their children. These choices may not be like by the kids, but certain people should be avoided, certain teachers should not be listened to, and every decision should be compared to sound teaching. In this episode, Matt and Tim continue their trek through 2 Timothy and discuss these things and why encouraging others is so important. If all parents do is focus on the negative, then children will not know what right things to imitate. Encourage those who need to be encouraged, and avoid those who need to be avoided.

The differences between adults and children are many, but maturity is not seen in every adult. Some things adults do are very similar to the decisions children make. In this episode, Tim and Matt begin a discussion about the book of 2 Timothy and what it looks like to be a biblical adult. This book is the final letter the Bible has that the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, his child in the faith. It reads like a father's last words to his son, and it is filled with wisdom believers must take to heart. As our hosts walk through this book, pay careful attention to what Paul points out and think about how you can apply this to parenting.

If there is one thing that people learn over time is that news stations love to take an incident and report it into the ground. Negative story after negative story keeps people wondering if this really is the end. In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about why people should not buy into the constant crisis narrative and what to do when it actually becomes that. As Christian parents should continue to stay biblical, they must continue to be learners of God's Word so that they may teach it to their children. God wins in the end, so there is no breaking news story that He is unaware of.

There are a lot of voices telling parents what is good and beneficial for their kids, but which voices should you listen to? In this episode, Tim and Matt work through a systematic theology of verifying what parents should trust. Whether you decide to homeschool, participate in extracurricular activities, or anything else, lay out the details and compare them with Scripture. Fearing God and obeying His commands is the ultimate call, so use that metric to decide what you kids will do.

"Service with a smile!" This slogan is used in a lot of businesses, but that service is their job. What about the Christian? In this episode, Tim and Matt discuss what true service is: sacrificial work for the betterment of others. The Bible does more than reveal the way to eternal salvation; it details what the ideal godly life is supposed to be characterized by. If Jesus came to serve and not be served (Mark 10:45), then this is what is expected from His followers.

The world today seems to have a degradation in morality. In response to this, Christians must raise kids to be polite and always act on their best behavior to set them apart, right? In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about how this problem has been around for thousands(!!!) of years stemming from a lack of biblical, Christ-centered living. Moral people still do not line up to God's standard, so there must be another way to achieve lives that bring God praise, glory, and honor. Listen to find out.

It is very common for parents to spend most of their day at work. When they come home, the frustrations from work can easily be taken out on their spouse or kids. In this episode, Tim and Matt take a more practical approach to dealing with this issue that is not specifically addressed in Scripture. Taking the whole counsel of God's Word, believers have the basics to dealing with stress at work AND discipling their families well without the two colliding like cars in a highway accident. Give your frustrations to the Lord in prayer, depending on Him to give you the strength you need.

The world is hostile to God and His children, so how should Christian parents approach dealing with the many voices telling them that their parenting is outdated or abusive? In this episode, Tim and Matt finish their study of Psalm 3 by focusing on how God grants rest and deals with sin in the culture. Do not be afraid to stand on biblical truth because it is God who brings salvation. Sin causes disruption, but God brings rest to the weary.

There are passages that speak directly to parenting, but there are many passages that can be applied to parenting. In this episode, Tim and Matt talk about how God gives us the protection we need and the provision to live a life that brings Him praise, glory, and honor. Though the opposing voices are loud and the societal pressures are great, our God gives us what we need when we need it. Trust in Him, the provider of every good and perfect gift.

Joshua 24:15 is not a verse just for decorative ornaments or cute pictures. It might be the toughest stance you take for your family. In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about why this stance needs to be made by believing parents. True leadership sets a vison and works to attain it, whether or not everyone is in agreement. The goal of biblical parenting is to raise kids in Bible-believing homes, but the outcome differs from house to house. Do not worry because the God of all creation is with those who love and obey Him.

"Nothing is sacred anymore." You've probably heard or said this phrase recently. As discussed in the last episode, Matt and Tim said that many believers do not have a biblically accurate understanding of what "being holy" is, so in this episode, our hosts work this out for parents. Though not a more practical episode, an understanding of believers needing to be different from the world sets up their families to be biblically informed and practically sound. Be holy as God is holy.

For believers, the Bible is clear that we are to be different than the world, but how far does that difference extend to? In this episode, Tim and Matt break down what Christian mysticism means and how it is harmful to your families. The Bible lays out clear and plain instructions on how to live and what to understand, so going beyond those boundaries leads to misunderstanding and even unbelief if not corrected. Every Christian parent wants to see their children accept Christ at an early age, mature in their faith and their life, and have families that do the same. However, that is not always the case (nor is it a majority, either). In this episode, Matt and Tim walk through two passages that talk about people walking away from the Christian faith and discuss how parents should respond. A lot of people have ideas of faithfulness and gentleness in their minds, but do they line up with the biblical principles? In the penultimate section of our study of the fruit of the Spirit, Matt and Tim talk about what it means to be trustworthy and treat people with dignity. Loving your family leads to treating them with dignity. No matter how un-gentle your actions may seem at first, demonstrating a biblical life shows your kids what they must do to achieve the same.

There is a difference between being nice and being kind as well as a difference between being just and being good. A lot of people conflate the terms and create confusion, so in this episode, Tim and Matt want to give examples of the differences between each term and why they are beneficial to biblical parenting. Let God's love influence your kindness, and let that kindness influence your goodness.

Tim and Matt weathered some storms recently (both literally and figuratively) and had a testing of peace and patience, which is great because that is the topic for this episode. Since believers are supposed to strive for all of the fruit of the Spirit, there needs to be a recognition that this must first take place in the heart. There will not be peace with others if there is no peace with God, and there will be no patience with others if there is no patience with God. Set in your heart to follow and obey Christ for your good, for family's good, and His glory.

The Bible talks a lot about love and joy. The love of God is shown through His mercy and grace, and joy is the outcome of His salvation and deliverance. In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about how Christian parents are not called to "normal" parenting but that of different, holy parenting. Living without God's love leads to the inability to experience true joy and satisfaction. In a culture of exploring new ways to fulfill your desires, the Bible calls for believers to stand on the truth of who God is and what He calls us to do.

For the next few episodes, Matt and Tim are going to be discussing the fruit of the Spirit and how it pertains to parenting. Before that happens, though, some initial thoughts to the preceding verses need to be made. The works of the flesh, as Paul calls them, are centered around self-gratification and self-idolatry. These cannot co-exist with the fruit of the Spirit and will not help parents establish a biblical foundation in their homes. Jesus makes it plain to His disciples that following Him will cause disruption. The world is against God wholeheartedly, and this affects every household to the smallest point of contention. Why would Jesus say He does not bring peace? In this episode, Tim and Matt talk about why this idea is important to keep in mind as parents search the Scriptures for what God says they should do. The Bible is pretty clear on what God wants believers to know, but there are some things that can get a little confusing. What is intercessory prayer? Who does it? How do I pray for others? In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about what it means for parents to intercede for their kids and why these prayers are important. Our praying should never decrease, but we change the way we pray as our kids get older. No matter what, we should constantly be in prayer for our family, friends, leaders, and random people we come in contact with.

Hurt people hurt people. Pain can lead people to making horrible, sinful decisions, but how should Christian parents respond to those who hurt them? In this episode, Matt and Tim continue their conversation on church hurt by discussing what it looks like to stay at a church and not immediately leave. God calls believers to be different than the world, so Christians should respond to difficulty differently by putting our hurt and burdens on the One who created all things. A lot has happened in the lives of Tim and Matt, and they have experienced a lot of hurt from inside and outside the church. Though some things happened when they were younger, the actions of their parents set them up for success. God is not pleased with sin. Even when church leaders commit hurtful actions against others, this cannot and does not please God. Instead, He freely forgives those who have placed their faith in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. If we are made in His image, then we must act according to the standard He has set out in Scripture.

Censorship is a hot topic in the political realm, but it is not always bad. What does it mean for parents to censor things for their kids? In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about this question and how it is played out in the way we approach entertainment. Books, movies, YouTube videos, and more might contain adult themes parents are not aware of, so there should be plenty of research done in order to make sure children know the ways of God before they are confronted with the realities of a fallen world.

How does God work? Does He only use big moments to create incredible situations and miracles? Or does He use the faithfulness of those who trust and obey Him? In this episode, Tim recounts a story of an act of faithfulness that changed the course of his family, showing that God can use anyone to accomplish His will. Little acts of faithfulness lead to big moments of power. Parents must play the long game in praying for their families, even if it takes fifteen years and beyond.

Sadly, many churches do not give classes or examples of how this is done. "A whole Bible makes a whole Christian." This saying teaches that the Old and New Testaments not only make up the whole Bible, but they are both necessary to make a whole Christian. There are moments when we need to take a risk for God, but is every big decision like that? When the prophet Daniel was being raised, there is a chance his parents did not consider he would be taken into a foreign culture. Here we are. At the end of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus has talk a lot about how believers are supposed to live, and Matt and Tim have added some commentary about one of Jesus's most memorable speeches. The Bible is clear: there is one way to God. There is no work we can do to earn our way to Heaven, so God made that way possible through Jesus. What does it mean to ask God for things? A lot of people think it is focused on improving yourself or gaining certain things, but Matt and Tim want to bring a different perspective. God blesses believers so that they may be a blessing to others. In fact, when we treat others the way we want to be treated, Jesus said that this is the main focus of the Law and the Prophets! Listen to how God's blessings are not meant for us to hold on to but pass along for His glory and the good of others.

Preconceived notions and bias are difficult to avoid, but Jesus does not beat around the bush. In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about judging and how the application is right in the first verse. Confrontation about sin is different because of the desire for repentance and reconciliation. Judgment negatively assumes guilt with no chance of making the situation better, so don't do it.

"Do not worry about anything" is a difficult command to follow. There are so many uncertain parts of life that cause many parents to constantly be afraid about the future, but Jesus is pretty clear. In this episode, Tim and Matt encourage parents to consider how great and good God is in light of anxiety. God is in control of all things, meaning that nothing happens without Him knowing about it. If this is true, then trust that He is doing what is best for you, your family, and all who believe.

This world is very materialistic. People want things and live their lives trying to get the most things, but ultimately, there is no joy or satisfaction in the things of this world. In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about what believers should treasure (after an eight minute breakdown of a depressing weekend of football). If your whole heart is set on Christ, then your parenting and other actions will reflect that. Depend on God because He made us to desire Him.

There's a lot that is going on for Matt and Tim this time of the year. Football season is upon them, but that will not detract the whole episode (up until around the nine minute mark) because they will talk about the difference between doing good and being a do-gooder. Our actions reflect our hearts, and if our hearts are not right with the Lord, then our actions will fall short of God's standard set in the Bible. Let goodness flow from a heart changed by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of your children and so many others.

There are a lot of challenging things that Jesus talks about on the Sermon on the Mount, and His talks on love really show how far believers need to go in order to love like God does. In this episode, Matt and Tim want to press parents to love better and show that love to their kids. We have not been given ordinary love from God because His love is extraordinary, so take that extraordinary love and give to everyone (even though it's really hard to do).

"Let your 'yes' be 'yes' and your 'no' be 'no.'" This phrase is spoken frequently when parents talk to their kids, but what are the implications? In this episode, Tim and Matt break down this phrase and other similar phrases to show that God takes delight when we do what we say we will do or do not do what we say we will not do. Simply put, parents must teach and model the fact that our words carry meaning. Listen to how this plays out practically and what parents should do when they break their promises.

Honestly, this is a topic few people like to talk about. Not only is divorce a rampant problem in the world today, but adultery can be committed in a lot of different ways. It is easier to just avoid the issue and move on, but if Jesus felt the need to teach on it, then we should not hide this issue from our kids. Tim is back from Missouri, and his students are fired up for some evangelism! In today's episode, he and Matt talk about how believers are useful to God through our obedience to the commands in the Bible and the importance of taking responsibility to live differently than the world. In all that parents do, God should be glorified and magnified because this might be what someone needs to see and hear in order for them to turn to God.

A lot of people read the Bible as a good book, but it has been Tim and Matt's challenge to live out what the Bible teaches. In this episode, they begin to walk through the Sermon on the Mount and how it speaks to parenting. Starting with the Beatitudes, the Bible calls believers to live differently, and by extension, parent differently.

The Bible is filled with a lot of failure. The Israelites, the twelve disciples, and many others constantly failed to meet God's standard, yet we celebrate their successes. Why is that? In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about legacy and why it is important to remember where God gave us grace to move past our failures into His marvelous light. When we live for God in the small moments, we teach our kids that God's legacy is what matters more than our own.

There is a lot that happens out of our control, but we have a choice in how we respond. In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about both options: complaining about the outcome and how it is not what we want or finding contentment in the situation. In a world of complainers and grumblers, be a light by worshipping God in every situation knowing God gives a spirit of peace not found anywhere else.

The parable of the sower is a wonderful passage that talks about the different types of reception to hearing the Gospel. The question Tim asks (as Matt gets distracted by a phone call MID RECORDING) is if parents consider their actions towards their kids as sowing seeds of the Gospel? The habits and thoughts we pass down to our kids take root and form them into the adults they will become, so take special care to apply biblical principles into your life and continue to share the Gospel to your families!

Matt and Tim were at camp last week, so they talk about what happened to them and share some stories about their (mis)adventures. Through our lives, stress becomes something that everyone must deal with. The greatest issue is not having a biblical basis to operate on and reacting in the heat of the moment. When we step back and depend on God to guide our next steps, we find peace that surpasses understanding and the ability to move forward in a God-honoring way.

Most people do not usually think of confrontation as a good thing, but as Matt and Tim will discuss in this episode, it can be the difference between obedience and disobedience. Through the example of Eli and his sons, parents should consider taking opportunities to confront their children's sin. Doing this must be done in prayer and love, but the long term blessings it will bring are better than the short term appeasement.

Vacation Bible School is one of the most fun ways to tell kids about the saving grace of Jesus and bring churches together. Not only that, but it's worth mentioning that it helps your teens as well. Though there are things that we can enjoy on this earth, we must place importance and preeminence on Christ.

Lots of people pray, and as Tim and Matt have discussed before, lots of people pray incorrectly. There is a place for prayers that include praying for things, but when "things" take up all of our prayers, it sounds like we are no longer asking but demanding. Listen carefully to how you and others pray. Fill your prayers with biblical thoughts of adoration, confession, and thanksgiving before you pray for supplication and see how close you grow towards God.

There is no denying the fact that we live in a sexualized world. Movies and shows have romance in them constantly, and many of these examples are not God-honoring. Tim and Matt want to encourage parents to be shining examples of what biblical romance looks like so that they may teach their children before the world does. Whether it is talking about the love for your spouse more to your young kids or how to pursue a relationship with your older kids, show the Christ in everything you do.

The difficulty of raising children is matching your words with your actions, and many parents fail in this way. The culture around us pushes children to adopt unbiblical ideas of gender, and the failure of teaching at home adds to the confusion. The Bible not only teaches people about salvation, but it teaches believers about godly living and understanding.

It is easy to treat holidays as just a break from the norm, but should they hold any other purpose? For Tim and his wife, they have decided to focus on doing some things that are important but have not been a priority in the past. When families vacation, there seems to be a lack of Christian living away from home. Lent is the time of preparation for Easter, but much like deconstructing, people do not replace things they lay aside with Scripture. Though fasting is not always best way for some people to prepare their hearts, removing distractions from our lives so that we may better focus on God will not be something that harms us. is what most parents think when their child asks some difficult questions, but this is not always the case. In this episode, Matt and Tim pick on each other for a bit before discussing what deconstruction is and is not. Be discerning to see if your child is asking questions to stump you or to see if you can give them the right answer, so never throw away their seemingly senseless questions. Do not be afraid to face the hard questions because you are surrounded by people who have asked similar questions and have become stronger in their faith.

Parenting is difficult to do alone, so it is good to have friends you can trust to help. This trust is not open to anyone, so Tim and Matt try to give you some parameters in looking at who you want to be friends with (with a bit of a longer intro talking about some Super Bowl drama). Matt recounts a friend of his parents' impact on his life and why it matters to find the right friends to speak into the life of your children.

Matt and Tim want to take this opportunity to tell parents that they should stay updated with current events and to teach their children about what is happening in the world. Evil happens in big and small ways, and we must be willing to talk about them to our kids before they hear about it from other sources and people. Idolatry can be a difficult thing to talk to someone about. Believe it or not, many people in the church carry idols with them. The modern culture can be difficult to overcome, but as through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, parents can know what God's standard is for their parenting.

When your child receives Christ into their life, many things will change for them, but the lives of parents do not change that drastically. The big question most parents ask is, "How do I keep this excitement going?" This episode, like most episodes so far, will be a starting point to show what parents need to be teaching their newly saved kids by looking at the ultimate parenting book: Proverbs. Some things are hard to talk about since they can be foreign issues we are not used to, but the problem of gender identity is becoming more and more prominent in our churches today. Depression hits in a much different way than most mental disorders. It can feel as if the world is against you, and there is no hope for it to end. In this episode, Matt and Tim talk about biblical writers and their depression, how they responded to it, and what believers can learn from their stories along with some practical works you can do for yourself or your kids. Anxiety is a killer that has become a common struggle in schools, workplaces, and the church. The problem is that a lot of people think they are not qualified to deal with issues like this, so Matt and Tim are starting a new series focused on helping you guide your kids (or yourself) through these difficult issues. You will learn about how to deal with sin through alliteration (speak, soak, serve) and plenty of Bible verses that talk about anxiety. Anxiety is not fun, but God is still in control no matter how you feel.
