Where You Lead is an upcoming mother-daughter podcast about “The Gilmore Girls.” We’ll be discussing every episode of this nostalgic, fall-vibes television show, which ran from 2000 to 2007, through the lens of class disparities, more-or-less functional family dynamics, gender roles, the portrayal of women in popular media, politics in general, and of course, mother-daughter relationships in all their various forms.
We may talk about production values one minute and sexist stereotypes the next. Many of the issues we see in The Gilmore Girls show up in movies, other television shows, in our national politics, in the workplace, and in the lives of the people we love. We started this conversation with each other a couple of decades ago. We think these discussions are important, even when they are also funny or ridiculous. So we decided to move them into the digital realm and share them with you. We welcome your comments.
Our first episode will air Tuesday, November 15, 2022.

A quick note to our listeners: Tess and Beth would like to apologize for the less-than-perfect audio quality of this and the following two episodes. We’ve learned a lot about audio recording and editing while prepping this podcast, and we promise you that it gets better. Now, onto the program…
We’re in episode two, The Lorelais’ First Day at Chilton, and Beth and Tess discuss the enigma of Mick/Kirk, the excellent Sally Struthers, Miss Patty and the perfect tush, Lane and the New Wave, class at Chilton and in the Gilmore Girls world (which brings us unfortunately to Jeff Bezos,) the introduction of Paris the world’s most uptight teenage nerd, and perhaps a hint at the softer side of perma-curmudgeon Luke.

In this, the inaugural episode of the podcast, Beth and Tess discuss the first episode of Gilmore Girls, as well as why they decided to do a podcast on this two-decade-old TV show. Much like the story of the eponymous girls, Beth was a single mother who sent Tess to private school, despite not having the kind of income such a thing normally requires. Highlights from this episode include the absurdity of TV finances, Rory’s ‘not like other girls’ moment, Michel in all his French glory, the stereotype of mothers resenting their daughters, Lorelai fending off a road-tripper who doesn’t know Kerouac, Sookie the whirling dervish, and the joys of reuniting against your upper crusty grandparents.
