God in the Normal – Examen Meditation Practice
We all have both mountaintop and valley experiences in our lives. On the mountaintop, God is so close and so real. We’re excited by powerful experiences. We’re filled with energy and vigor for life. On the contrary, the valleys feel quiet and dark. God feels distant. We know struggle, pain, and isolation. Both the mountaintops and the valleys can profoundly shape us. Typically, these seasons are short in duration.
Then, there is the in-between. The experience of what we would each consider to be “normal life”. Most of our lives are spent between the mountaintop and the valley – somewhere between ecstatic and struggling. So, do you find God in the details of your normal life? Do you sense God’s intimate presence in the daily routine of it all?
This examen meditation, when done as a prayer rhythm, can build a framework for spiritual awareness of God in the details of everything – even the most routine and mundane things. Let’s try this practice together!

Advent Meditations - Mary's Song
In this Advent meditation, we invite you to gaze reflectively on Mary, the mother of our Lord. Look upon her courage, her grace, and her total trust in the will and love of God. Join Dan as he leads us in a reflection on the Magnificat – Mary’s song of praise and devotion.
Luke 1:46-55
And Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.
His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
to Abraham and his descendants forever
just as he promised our ancestors.”

Welcome to Advent
The clashing of kingdoms becomes quite evident during the holidays. One kingdom is loud, neon, consumer driven and exhausting. It doesn’t ask your permission to invade your life. Black Friday, Cyber Monday – shopping days that have evolved into national holidays. Anyone can get drawn into the frenzy of it all, and when they do, they just might miss the invitation to withdraw from ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. The alternative kingdom will always lead with an invitation. To accept this invitation is to choose stillness, reflection, and anticipation. This is Advent. A season of waiting. A season of longing. A season of prayer, and hope, and joy.
This week, my only goal is to invite you to disconnect from the hustle and bustle so that you might find a sense of silence and deep stillness. Come with me. Become more quiet in your soul. Be more still. And wait.

Tony first hosted “The Innkeeper” last year during the Urban Mystics live guided sessions. If you were one of the few who were there when Dan and Tony were first getting started last year – first, thank you for following us and listening! Second, this one might sound familiar.
In this Advent meditation, Tony will guide you through an imaginative meditation. In this practice of visualization, you are the innkeeper in first century Bethlehem. Earlier in the evening, you reluctantly turn away a man and a very pregnant woman who are traveling together, because all of your accommodations are filled. But this isn’t the last you will see of the traveling couple. Listen and follow along as you experience an unexpected scene of profound significance later that night…

The Journey of the Magi (Longing and Hope)
The journey of the magi is an element of the Advent and Christmas story that relates deeply to a diverse range of human experience – from longing to wonder, from violence and despair to hope and justice. Join us this week as we continue in our Advent meditation series. Dan is back! And we invite you to respond to the hope and anticipation of the season as the magi respond to the sign of the newborn king – with a presentation of gifts and reverence.

Neurodiverse
Hi. My name is Tony. I'm an Urban Mystic & I have ADD.
Neurodiversity and contemplative prayer may seem like two unlikely friends.
“Just quite your mind.”
“Let your thoughts go.”
“Enter into stillness and silence.”
Ha! For an ADD brain like mine, these kinds of instructions are hard to hear. I have never experienced a “quiet mind” or had enough control of the thought activity in my brain to decide that I was going to “let them go.” The more I tried to do contemplation the way typical brains do contemplation, the more I was led into frustration, envy, and failure.
I created this episode for all of the people that I have spoken to that experience the tension between meditation and neurodiverse brains. The truth is, you can experience deep stillness and enter into deep presence with God – you just have to discover how YOU do that best, and then let yourself do it. It might not follow all the “rules,” but let’s be real – neurodiverse brains also tend to have a tenuous relationship with rules, so that shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
I truly hope this series of episodes is helpful for Urban Mystics listeners in some way. I hope that each of you hears something in this that was for you – something your soul needed to hear.

Lectio Divina – Practice Together - Luke 8:42-48 The Fringe of His Garment
Part 2 contains the contemplative practice for this week’s two-part episode.
Luke 8:42-48
"As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. And he said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.'"

Kids - Imaginative Prayer
“Let the little children come to me… for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.”
In this imaginative prayer exercise, you watch as Jesus spends an afternoon in a village square. As Jesus speaks with the mix of people gathered around him – but mostly, he seems to be preoccupied by the fun he is having playing with the rambunctious kids.
You watch for a while until you notice another child leaning back and watching the commotion with you. You look closer and realize something. The child next to you looks an awful lot like you… The child next to you is you.

Just Breathe - A Meditation for Rest
Sometimes, contemplative practices can be rather heavy – especially those that encounter internal hurt, sensitive emotions, and questions without quick answers… which is why it is so very important to integrate another kind of contemplative practice into your sustainable rhythms – rest. Sometimes – actually, more than sometimes, it is essential that we intentionally cause ourselves to stop, rest, recover, and just breathe.
That’s exactly what we are going to do in this session. Breathe. Rest. Recover. That’s it. All you have to do is give yourself permission and enter in.

Hangry (Part 2)
Part 2 contains the contemplative practice for this week's two-part episode. This episode is called “Hangry” and is intended to focus on the deeper, under-the-surface reasons for some of the afflictive emotions we experience in day-to-day life. “Hangry” is a play-on-words that speaks to a state of being. It’s a combination of the words “Hungry” and “Angry” and is used in reference to someone who is displaying an emotion of anger that is related to the other reality… that they are hungry. This kind of correlation might be more common than we might recognize at first – an experience of an emotion that is actually related to something entirely separate from the immediate context – frustration at home is actually coming from stress at work, a tendency to withdraw is more related to a need for stimulation far more than it is related to the people who are experiencing withdrawal from someone they care about.
Inevitably, our emotions are connected to our needs – and whether we are experiencing those needs as either satisfied or unsatisfied. Even deeper still, the experience of unmet needs is often related to a woundedness in our soul – a wound that is the result of our own attempts to understand or justify why we are experiencing unmet needs in the first place. The practice in this session attempts to follow the Spirit with care and patience into these deeper places of our internal world. Under the guidance of the Spirit, we seek awareness so that we can experience healing and freedom.
If you haven’t listened to Part 1 for this week, we recommend listening as an introduction in preparation for this deep-dive into inward awareness.

The Inward Journey (Part 1)
I’m trying something a bit different this week. This is part 1 of two parts that I am releasing together. Part 1 is a way of introducing the direction of the meditation in part 2.
Part 1 is not a guided meditation – it’s more of a preparation talk before moving into the practice that follows in Part 2. The “talk” is about the movement of the soul in contemplative prayer. So far on Urban Mystics, our meditations have been predominantly geared to move someone towards God in communion. This “towards God” movement is fundamental to contemplative prayer – but so is the movement “towards self.” The movement in reflective prayer towards a deeper awareness of self might feel different for some listeners. It’s more personal. It has the potential to trek into some areas of our inner-life that we would rather leave alone and not talk about. We follow the Holy Spirit to encounter these places on the Spirit’s terms – not ours. And, we do this, knowing that at no point is the Spirit motivated to bring condemnation, guilt, punishment, or shame to these places. Instead, if the Spirit leads us to encounter a shadow place within our soul, it is to bring healing, restoration, and freedom. Most often, our internal shadows are the result of deeper soul wounds – wounds that need to be healed and wounds that have led us to buy into lies that we need liberation from.
It feels like a big step to do a meditation exercise that is intentionally focused on internal awareness and woundedness, which is why I am offering this Part 1 as an introduction as preparation for Part 2.

(S:2, E:7) Gift – To: You, From: Jesus
This is a special episode for me (Tony) as I get to share a meditation exercise that had a profound impact on my own spiritual journey and relationship with Jesus. Years ago, early in my spiritual journey, I was led through this visualization practice in the same way that I will share it with you in this episode. The practice is actually quite simple – yet, the impact it had on me years ago was profound, personal, and moving. I learned, through this practice for the first time, that “prayer” was far deeper and more mysterious than I had known. I learned that prayer wasn’t just an activity that I was supposed to do – it is an experience where my soul and God’s Spirit resonate together.
I look forward to sharing this exercise with you now. I hope and pray that God meets you in it as God did for me – but in a way that is a reflection of your own unique, special, precious identity in Jesus. I pray the Spirit blesses you in vivid, authentic ways.

Father – A Prodigal Son Lectio Divina w/Dan
We just recently celebrated Father’s Day here in the U.S. – a holiday that may mean many different things for different people. The word “Father” is inexplicably tied to the way we talk about and think about God. Jesus often refers to God as “Father” and even teaches His disciples to refer to God the same way. When Jesus instructs the disciples to pray “our Father in heaven,” the word used for Father is “Abba.” “Abba” is an even more intimately relational word than “Father” is – a closer translation would suggest that Jesus is teaching His disciples to call God, “Dad,” or “Pappa.”
For us, this also means that our relationship to God as “Father” will likely be influenced by our experience of our own fathers or father-figures in our lives. For some, this influence makes the image of God as Father all the more meaningful. For others, this imagery makes things more complicated… Yet, Jesus seems insistent that we get to know what His Father is like. To illustrate, Jesus tells his disciples a story about a Father and his two sons. While a lot can be said about the two sons in the story, what we gather about the character of the Father is special. Join Dan, as he leads a Lectio Divina meditation into the story of the Prodigal Son – with special attention to the compassionate, patient, forgiving Father.

Expecting Company (You Host Jesus for Dinner) - Visualization w/Tony
In this session, Tony guides you into a visualization prayer practice… You are expecting company tonight. You have plans to host Jesus for dinner and an evening together at your home. The visualization begins earlier in the day, as you imagine yourself preparing to host for dinner that evening – cleaning, dishes, getting dressed, cooking, running your to-do lists through your mind. Then, as the afternoon grows into evening, your visualization shifts gears as you hear a knock at the door. Jesus is here, at your house, ready to spend an evening in your company.
Take a few minutes to let yourself enter into this imagined scene… what would it be like to have Jesus over for dinner?

Delight – A Meditation w/Dan
In Hebrew – the word “Delight” is a reference to a soft and tender heart. In this way, only a softened and delicate heart can truly “delight in the Lord.” As Dan says, “to delight in the Lord means to find joy, satisfaction, and pleasure in having a deep and intimate relationship with God. It is a state of being where our hearts and souls are captivated by God’s presence, His character, and His ways.” Where does true contentment come from? What source is capable of full satisfaction? This meditation is about joy, passion, rejoicing, desires, goodness, faithfulness, love, purpose… This meditation is about delight. May it lead you to a place of full delight in the Lord!

Compassion – Healing at the Pool of Bethesda w/Tony
In this session, we will practice biblical imagination using a story found in the Gospel of John 5:1-10 – The Healing at the Pool of Bethesda. Through reflective visualization, we attempt to encounter this scene in a new way – by imagining that we are there. In this story, we witness the compassion of Jesus towards a man who has suffered from a disability that has kept him at the edge of the pool for 38 years. Before healing the man, Jesus listens first. The listening is important. Its as much an act of compassion as the physical healing. Then, after healing the disabled man, Jesus’ attention turns towards you. He approaches, seeking to truly listen to your story. What will He ask you? What will you share? What else will the Spirit reveal in this imaginative practice?

Behold - a Meditation w/Dan (5/26/2023)
This week, Dan leads us to stop and pause for just a moment... to SEE. To "behold" means to observe, to gaze upon, and to see. But more often, when the word is used in the scriptures, "behold" means - "Be SURE to see!" Be SURE to see the glory and majesty of God. Be SURE to see the magnificence of Jesus. Be SURE to SEE! Join us, for just a short time, to prioritize a reflective meditation intended to see the wonder and glory of the life set before you.

Abundance - Examen Style Meditation w/Tony (5/19/2023)
We're back! Welcome to another season of Urban Mystics. We are rested and excited to be back with you. This season, we have some new ideas that we are excited to try out. This is the first episode of our new season. It's called "abundance" and is an Examen style meditation on the overflowing generosity of God and our experience of that generous abundance in our lives. The Examen practice is a contemplative exercise developed by St. Ignatius.
We hope you enjoy our new flow as we attempt to create guided contemplative meditations that are a little shorter than the previous season. Please let us know what you think, which style you prefer, etc. We would love to hear your feedback!

Lent Meditations - Cross - A Gratitude Meditation w/Dan (4/5/2023)
This is our final meditation of the Lenten Season. In this episode, Dan guides us through a practice of gratitude as we reflect on the gifts we have received through this Lenten journey and the sacrifice Jesus has made on the cross. We set our burdens, our worries, our missteps at the foot of the cross and because of Jesus' profound love for us, we hear him speak, "It is finished."
We thank you for journeying with us over the last few weeks. As mentioned in the episode, Dan and Tony are going to take a break for a few weeks after Easter. We will resume these meditations, but would like to pause this weekly rhythm to rejuvenate our inspiration and creativity. However, while we break, keep an eye out for a surprise podcast episode to pop up.

Lent Meditations - Serve - Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet: Imaginative Meditation w/Tony
This week, we invite you to enter into the intimacy and power of the scene in which Jesus washes the feet of his disciples, as depicted in the Gospel of John. Use your imagination to create an experience of this scene. Use your senses. Hear the sounds of supper shared in the upper room. Pass the plate of bread. Drink from your wine glass. And as you immerse into the evening in the close confines of the upper room, you witness something profound - the man who has been called Messiah and King, the man who has raised the dead and healed the sick and the lame, the man whom demons flee from - Jesus - fills a basin with water, ties a towel around his waist, takes a knee before each disciple in the room, and proceeds to wash the dirt and dust with his own hands. What would it be like to be in that room? Jesus calls us to follow his lead - to wash one another's feet, to serve as He served, to love as He loved. So, who's feet might you wash? How might this action speak to how you lead? How you use power, authority, or status?

Lent Meditations - Palm Branches - Darkness, Tension, and a Triumphal Entry w/Tony
The story of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem is filled with irony and tension. Amidst cheers and shouts of revolution and triumph, the Passover crowds receive Jesus with praise and adoration - laying palm branches across the road as he and his disciples make their way through the city. But, that's not all that's happening here. The road Jesus travelled into Jerusalem, now covered in symbolic palm branches, will also lead to Gethsemane, betrayal, denial, accusation, calvary, the cross, and then a tomb. Along the way, Jesus will cry out in physical, mental, and emotional anguish, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?". As Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem, Jesus enters into the darkness and tension of the human experience. As we follow Jesus, we are exposed to spirituality capable of holding both darkness and light, and in both, God is present revealing the mystery and beauty of our complexity. Sometimes, the places of darker tension within us are as fundamental to our human experience as the places of the warmest, most tender light. Lent holds this tension and refuses to look away from the truth hiding within the darkness. This week, we enter into the in between spaces of uncertainty, doubt, irony, and tension that Jesus entered into as soon as he rode the lowly mule into Jerusalem.

Lent Meditations - Desert - A Meditation on Isaiah 40 w/Dan
In this week of Lent, Dan leads us into a meditation on Isaiah 40. Like other images throughout scripture, the symbol of the desert carries complex meaning. Perhaps, you have used the desert as a metaphor in a variety of ways in your own spiritual journey. Maybe, you've used it to speak to a time of spiritual dryness or loneliness. Or, maybe it has represented a time of stillness and closeness to God. Or, perhaps, at different times, it has symbolized all of these things and more.
In this season, we retreat to the stillness and silence of the desert as a place of recentering and reconnecting to God. As we are moved out to meet God in the wilderness, we may hear the voice of encouragement and renewal. We may find ourselves in deeper ways as we go out to find deeper connection to God.

The Baptism of Jesus - An Imaginative Meditation w/Tony
In this episode, we use an imaginative prayer technique to see the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River by the prophet John. The sacrament of Baptism carries profound depth, meaning, and tradition. As a visible sign of an invisible reality, baptism reflects the postures of repentance and rebirth that are central to the observation of Lent. In this meditation, we will immerse ourselves into the scene from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 3, to witness John immerse Jesus in the waters of the Jordan River. We will witness the sky opening to the heavens and hear the voice of God speaking words of truth, affirmation, and witness: "This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased." What observation does God have for you in this experience? What affirmation do you need to hear from God as you continue through this time of Lent?

Genesis 1 Meditation w/Dan (featuring Tiffany Cornwell) Ash Wednesday, 2023
On Ash Wednesday, we are invited to recall, to look back - to remember that we are dust. The image of dust reflects our creation, that we are a piece of God's creation story. This week, our meditation follows this invitation to recall by visiting the account of where it all began - Genesis 1 and God's creative movement. As we reflect on this account, we are invited to imagine the great anticipation God created with, like a parent, bursting with hope and longing and joy as they await the arrival of a newborn child.
For the reading of the creation story, Urban Mystics would like to thank the talented voicework of Tiffany Cornwell.

Join Urban Mystics this week as Tony leads a guided practice of gratitude. As a contemplative exercise, the practice of gratitude is both simple and powerful. Attention to the blessings present everyday in our lives builds our awareness of God's presence and our experience of belovedness. Gratitude can help to shape a perspective of life as filled and flourishing instead of lacking or empty. We pray that your attention to the generosity of God and your gratefulness will inspire you to live into this generosity and joy towards those around you.
As mentioned at the end of the episode, we begin the season of Lent next week and in recognition of this season, Dan and Tony will be hosting a special Ash Wednesday EVENING (2/22/2023) live meditation in addition to the normal Wednesday morning rhythm. Like our Wednesday morning live guided sessions, the evening meditation will last around 30-minutes and center around a guided contemplative meditation. This will begin a Lent theme leading to Easter. We hope that you can join us for this live event. The session will begin at 8:00pm ET, 7pm CT, 5pm PT. You can join the live meditation space by visiting www.urbanmystics.org and clicking on the "Join Meditation on Zoom" button in the upper-right corner of the page - or, you can join through the Urban Mystics space in the new ReWire Hub virtual community by clicking the link.

This week, Dan Lee leads a meditation on our belovedness using Hagar's story beginning in Genesis 16:7. Pause for a few minutes with us as we hear the words spoken by God to Hagar for ourselves, "I see you," and "I hear you." What emotions arise in you as you hear these words for yourself? Are they comforting? A bit disruptive? God sees you and God hears you, wherever you might be today - and you are God's beloved, no matter where you might be.

In Latin, Lectio Divina means "divine reading." This ancient contemplative practice has been used by Christian mystics to encounter God through the reading of scripture for centuries. Saint Benedict encourages us to enter into Lectio Divina “with the ears of our hearts," and we invite you to join us to do just that. This week we will practice Lectio Divina using a passage from the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 4, verse 35-41 - Jesus Calms the Storm.

1 Kings 19 Contemplation w/Dan
This week, Dan Lee leads us through a contemplative exercise as we follow Elijah to the mountaintop with God in 1 Kings 19. This session is a journey towards stillness and silence where the whispering voice of God can be heard.

This visualization prayer will lead your imagination to create a special, secret, unique meeting place - a place that you can return to at any time, for any reason, to talk with God about anything, and God will be there. The visualization of a setting can be a powerful tool. If you can visualize a setting, you can visualize a scene. And if you can visualize a scene, you can use your imagination to enter into it.
Personally, for me (Tony), this visualization practice has become my contemplative default posture. Listening prayer begins with a visualization of my meeting place. From there, the possibilities are endless.
