Why HeroWork Was Created

HeroWork was originally created to improve the state of buildings that house charities. But we quickly learned that a modern-day barn raising is about much more than a fast-paced renovation, or what we call Radical Renovations. From our first project in Victoria, BC, we witnessed an increased sense of pride and engagement for clients, staff and volunteers inhabiting the new space.

Where would we be today if they believed those things could not be accomplished? When we believe something is impossible, we act as if that is true and as a result we make it true—it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. https://bissellcentre.org/about/

Rural on Purpose We are entering a new phase in human development and rural communities have a critical role to play. If we are paying close attention we’ll see the openings, the opportunities and the solutions to human problems that only functioning rural communities can provide.

If we look even further out we’ll see the awesome responsibility that we have to provide these solutions.

Yesterday we valued and marketed ourselves based on our proximity to urban centres. Tomorrow cities will be valued based on their proximity to nature and functioning, healthy rural regions - not the other way around.

It all begins with fearlessly optimistic people contributing their talents and ideas to build healthy, happy and whole communities.

Project Restore FIBI Incarceration is a deep and complex issue; and it can be hard to truly grasp if not personally experienced. In 2004, Aisha, the founder of Project: Restore FIBI, and her family were a family deeply impacted by incarceration. In her own words, “My children and I had not committed any crimes ourselves, yet our lives were irreversibly turned upside down. We were physically, emotionally, socially and psychologically thrust into the very cruel world of “justice” which unapologetically served up chaos, judgment, limited support, financial hardship and shame.
