Why is it so easy to create some habits but so tough to create others? The typical advice out there—practise something consistently over a certain period of time, such as 21 days—doesn’t always work. And when this seemingly reasonable formula doesn’t work for us, it can be incredibly demoralizing. It turns out that there’s an important piece missing, a piece that can make the whole process of habit-building so much easier. Join me in this latest episode in a discussion of the best way to create habits quickly and easily. No willpower or discipline required.

Far too many martial artists prioritize toughness at the expense of compassion. We want to be tough. We need to learn how to take a hit. Absolutely, these traits are valuable. But we also need to be able to meet people where they’re at, and this requires compassion. Do martial arts actually teach humility? We talk a lot about being humble in the context of martial arts. We value it. We discuss it at the dojo. We emphasize its importance at belt tests and tournaments. But… is there anything inherent in the training itself that actually teaches humility? Or is humility moreso a byproduct of the training? Join me in this latest episode as I discuss the tension between humility and ego in martial arts, and in the importance of navigating this tension—as well as the reality of violence—with as much grace as we can.

After the emotional ride of a martial arts belt test or tournament, we sometimes get caught up in our feelings and thoughts about the event. Whether we dwell on our mistakes or revel in our successes, we risk stagnating if we spend too much time focusing on these feelings about our performance. Join me in this episode as I explain a helpful activity that we can do after every tournament and belt test, and even after every training session. This activity can help us improve our confidence and devise a plan of action so we can keep moving forward towards mastery in martial arts.

Join me in this episode as I discuss a great technique for getting our nerves under control in martial arts. Whether we’re nervous about an upcoming tournament or test, or are feeling anxious about starting martial arts or getting back into it after time off, those nerves can get the best of us. This technique can help us reduce our nerves and get a sense of control back. It’s also a great way to figure out what goals to focus on so that we can improve our performance on the mats.

Is the desire for vengeance about honour, or does it speak far more to ego? Join me in my latest episode as I share my story of loss and my consequent obsession with vengeance. And of how that drive for revenge transformed over time, and surprisingly led to my healing.

We admire those who achieve greatness in martial arts, but we also envy them. They seem to be made of better stuff than us. But they’re not. They just didn’t give up. They committed to their path, and they made it an obsession. Many of us fear obsession, worrying that it will make us stand out and earn disapproval from others. But this is a shame, because that fixation is exactly what we need in order to achieve excellence and mastery. Join me in a discussion of the positive side of obsession, and its role in achieving greater things than we ever thought possible in life and martial arts.

Something I adore about karate is that we never ever have discussions about how our bodies look underneath our uniforms. We don’t sit around the dojo and talk about how to get rid of cellulite or love handles. Our focus in martial arts is far more on the incredible things we can do with our bodies, rather than on whether we look good naked. Join me in a discussion of the toxic side of fitness culture on social media, and on how it can negatively impact our body image. And on how karate and other martial arts rise above this superficial view, and instead celebrate the human body for the amazing and beautiful thing that it actually is.

In this episode we look at two different coaching styles: coach- or teacher-centered, and student-centered. The first one we are all familiar with; the teacher who makes it very clear that they are in charge, who wants to be seen as an expert, and who expects their students to “do as I say because I said so.” This style of teaching might work well for some students, but is rather ineffective for many others. In contrast, a student-centered style seems to encourage a much better relationship between teacher and student, as we will discuss in this talk. Join me in an exploration of how this second teaching style can be far more effective in strengthening the ties between martial arts instructor and student, and in making all of us stronger as martial artists.

Do you ever compare yourself to other martial artists and feel like you don’t measure up? In this episode we discuss the dangers of comparison. We explore the fallacy of well-meaning phrases such as “If I can do it, you can do it too,” and “If you want it badly enough, you can make it happen.” We look at the role of our environment in shaping our paths in martial arts. And finally, we explore the idea of “quitting” and “failing” in martial arts and other areas of our lives, and the reality that sometimes this is the best choice we can make.

Welcome to the first episode of The Karate Shrimp Podcast.

In this episode, you learn about me (Sabrina Bliem) and my background, and how I started my martial arts journey in my 40s as an outlet for grief over my mom’s cancer diagnosis.

We discuss the topics you can expect to learn about on this show, and how the various aspects of our lives (our diet, sleep, recovery, conditioning, mindset, etc.) impact our martial arts training and performance.

We talk about imposter syndrome and procrastination, and the lessons I learned in being a white belt. And finally, we discuss the value in taking imperfect action, even if we don’t feel good enough or never feel ready.

Thank you for joining me on my martial arts journey, and in the exploration of all the ways we can perform better in life and martial arts.
