Asking ourselves this question can help shift our perspective from seeing differences in co-parenting as negative to considering them as potentially beneficial for our kiddos.
The question encourages us to collect evidence on the positive aspects of diversity in parenting styles and to look for where they foster empathy, adaptability, and understanding in our children.

đ Any good story has a beginning, middle & end.
Your divorce story is no different.
In this week's podcast episode, I'm sharing a concept from a favorite book of mine: Bruce Feiler's book Life Is In the Transitions.
Bruce traveled across the country interviewing over 100 people who had gone through major, identity-shifting life changes and found many common themes with how folks navigated the transition.
One theme was the phases that we go through as we shift from our old lives to our new. He named these the Long Goodbye, the Messy Middle, and New Beginnings.
Using this naming during and after our divorce can help us cope with uncertainty, bring us more peace, and give us a sense of what's coming. Tune in for actionable advice on navigating divorce with resilience and grace, inspired by Feiler's wisdom.

What can we do when something our co-parent (or their new partner) does regularly ANNOYS the beegeezums out of us???
I share a specific example and the Reflective Practice I recommend, which includes:
1. Check-in with Yourself: Take a moment to assess your emotions using the Anger Scale [introduced by Maggie Reyes in Episode 98] and whether how you are feeling warrants action.
2. Embrace Curiosity: Ask yourself if your emotional response is proportionate and appropriate.
3. Clarify Your Desires: Identify what you REALLY WANT in the given situation. Whether it's seeking more connection with your child or feeling appreciated, clarity helps us focus on the goal and not get distracted.
4. Uncover Root Causes: Delve into whatâs underneath your emotional reactions. I share the power of asking âwhy.â
5. Connect with Your Body: Pay attention to how these feelings show up physically.
Tune in to discover a holistic approach to co-parenting, where emotional intelligence takes center stage, allowing for smoother interactions. đ

Could a "card game" make dividing up parenting responsibilities with your co-parent easier?
Ever since Elise Buie in Episode #75 told me about Eve Rodsky's book "Fair Play," I've wanted to dive into how we can use this system or "card game" to divide up tasks in co-parenting.
When I met Frederick Van Riper, a coach for men & dads and a Certified Fair Play facilitator, I knew he'd be a great guest to answer all my questions.
In this episode, we dive into:
Fair Play lays out all the work that goes into maintaining our household and raising kids. I'd recommend reading Fair Play to anyone who is in a partnership, hopes to be in a new relationship, or is co-parenting (no matter the temperature of your co-parenting relationship).
Even if you don't imagine sitting down with your co-parent to work through the "card game," getting clear for yourself on what is in your hand versus what is in your co-parent's can reduce stress and confusion.

Weâre heading to Minnesota this week to catch Dr. Myka Hanson and talk all things teens & co-parenting.
Dr. Hanson has spent the last 30 years working with teens and tweens in a variety of capacities. She taught high school English for over 15 years and has a Masters in Special Education and a Ph.D in psychology and somatics.

Yes, not-gonna-lie, I did invite her on to ask her all my questions as a mom-of-a-teen. đ
I also wanted to get her take on being a stepparent of two teens and navigating co-parenting.
Iâm SOOO inspired by the care she brings to her work. I did get a little teary when she talked about helping teens broach big topics with their parents-- I DARE YOU not to as well đĽ˛
I took many notes and if you have a teen, Iâm sure you will too.

Today we reconnect with some core teaching I did back in 2022.
Listen in to learn about Powerful Decisions and signs to recognize if you're not making decisions powerfully in your life.
(HINT: it may involve hypothetical rabbit holes, 2nd guessing yourself, and blaming your past self for making "wrong" decisions. )
I share the 4 Principles of Powerful Decisions:
1) Make them intentionally
2) Love your reasons
3) Have your back afterward
4) If you want, evaluate to learn from the decision
Our life changes at the rate we make decisions, so if you want things to be different, get ready to take some notes!

Coming to you today from the trail!
On this fall walk through the woods, I'm bringing you some ideas on:
when to use therapy vs. when to use coaching
how great therapists & great coaches both help you connect with your body
learning how to handle big emotions
the power of being willing to feel disappointment
having fun setting VERY clear intentions or goals
Here are a few soundbites:
âOne overlap between therapy and coaching is that we can process grief, we can process big feelings. We are a safe space to allow everything to come up.â
âWhat happens when we allow ourselves to get into our bodies is that we get less scared of any big emotions. We see them just as kind of changing weather patterns in our body, and we accept that they're going to keep changing.â
âWhen we are okay feeling disappointment or the possibility of feeling disappointment, we will go after SO MUCH MORE in our lives.â
Happy listening!

Think you need more answers & solutions in your life?
Maybe what you actually need are different questions.
Today I share how to surface invisible questions affecting your day and how to use questions to help you make the decisions that will get you more of what you want.
Here are a few sound-bites:
"Specificity is the enemy of worry and anxiety. When we get very specific about the situation and all the different ways that we could choose to navigate it, then we can dissolve our worry and our anxiety about it."
"Our brains love questions. They love to go on a hunt and be curious. Let's feed our brains questions that light us up, that have us feeling empowered and capable."
"If you want to be making more decisions, if you want things to be changing and improving more in your life, then asking YOURSELF more questions is the first step to doing that."
"Identify the questions that you are not answering right now. I encourage you to write them down. Flush them out of your brain. Make your brain get specific about what the question is."
A few sample questions to play with or journal on:
Bring on the questions!

I'm sharing tips or âguardrailsâ that you can implement in your co-parent communication to make it less triggering and more empowering.
Here's what I cover:
1) Emotional Regulation
Learn how to respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally.
2) Distinguish Text vs. Email
Consciously decide what warrants a text and what should be communicated via email.
3) Timing is Everything
Avoid the impulse to immediately read and respond to emails, especially if they trigger strong emotions.
4) Email Acknowledgment
Decide whether to acknowledge received emails briefly.
5) Create a Co-Parenting Email Address
Consider setting up a separate email address exclusively for co-parenting discussions.

Today's guest knows divorce inside & out.
Not only did she divorce when her kids were 1 and 3, but in the same year she gave up her career as a divorce attorney and chose to focus entirely on mediation.
Listen in to hear why Erika Englund says "I'm the divorce lawyer who never won a case", and why she feels like everyone wins in mediation.
Erika believes that good people deserve good divorce, and it is her life's work - as a lawyer, mediator, strategist, professor, and mother - to make that happen.
Tune in to hear:
the George Castanza's method of managing high-conflict divorce,
how mediation can reduce stress for parents and children,
why conflict is the problem for our kids, NOT divorce,
why you don't need to be singing Kumbaya with your ex in order to use mediation,
and a bunch of great thought-provoking questions that Erika asks her clients.
Erika also offers a book recommendation if you're trying to decide if divorce is the right move for you: Taking Space: How to Use Separation to Explore the Future of Your Relationship, by Robert Buchicchio.
This is such a great conversation about navigating divorce, how to use mediation, and how to set your focus on long-range goals.
PS- Do you know someone thinking about divorce or at the beginning of their process, please share this episode with them!

Take a walk and listen to this sweet conversation with guest Pete Sibley as he shares his challenges with anxiety & depression and the dark times when he felt that he had "failed" at a music career.
We'll cover self-talk "dressing rooms", punching-wall parenting moments, and how being raised to serve others doesn't automatically teach us how to be kind to ourselves--- and how to raise our kids with that skill.
It's a vulnerable, applicable, heart-soothing conversation. Enjoy!

Every divorce is different, but given our quirky human brains, we often talk about them in the same ways.
I coach my clients on the "story" they currently tell about their divorce (to themselves and to others) and how it can shift and change over time.
"Editing" or "rewriting" our story can magicallyâ¨unlock new, unexpected possibilities for us.
It's especially helpful if we've been feeling unable to move on, stuck in yucky co-parenting drama, or feeling a lot of resentment or anger.
When you're ready to change your story, you can do so without making past versions wrong or bad.
Listen in to hear the 3 types of stories most folks tell about their divorce and compare it to how you talk about your divorce now.

Hearing other women's stories reminds us that we are not alone on our journeys.
Today, Rachel Clar shares her journey from divorce to creating a rich, juicy life.
Rachel shared: "I am a mother of two teenage boys, I am a lawyer turned entrepreneur, I am a woman with Jewish roots and Buddhist wings, I love to dance, make art, and enjoy art. I am right on the line between introvert and extrovert, enjoy both deep introspection and high adventure. I find a connection to everyone I meet."
A bit more about Rachel: "I absolutely love peanut butter. I annoy my sons with silly songs about whatever is going on in life, & I live to make them laugh. My favorite moment in 2022 was the family dessert party for my elder son's 14th, which devolved into a spontaneous dance party, making my three-year-old niece's eyes grow very wide (with âshock and aweâ?)."

It sucks to feel stressed, anxious or angry (rageful anyone?) in your co-parenting situation.
It's even worse when you think that the only way for things to change is to get the mountain of your Ex to move. So you spend so much time thinking about how to get them to see things differently and to show up in the way you want.
Talk about an uphill slog!!
There's another way! Let me show you how you can improve co-parenting even if your Ex doesn't change at all.
I promise you can feel more empowered, calmer, and enjoy your time with your kids so much more. Plus, you can feel confident that you can create the future you want-- no matter what your Ex is doing.

Darling listener,
This week's episode is very special to me.
[BIPOC listeners please see note at the bottom.*]
This episode includes two topics that are very close to my heart, but may not on the surface seem connected: race literacy and menstrual cycle attunement.
But I promise they are!
Their overlap: radical body awareness.
I'm a thoughtwork gal through and through- but even I know we can't intellectualize everything.
The more I coach and get coached, the more I see the power of noticing the physical sensations that come with emotions.
I'm convinced that folks who can be with their feelings, those who can allow all the sensations (no matter how uncomfortable), are best equipped to create exactly what they want in their lives.
Why?
Because they don't allow a feeling --especially shame, guilt, imposter syndrome, fear of disappointment, etc.-- to prevent them from doing something.
When you're willing to feel negative emotions, you're more likely to...
... ask for the raise.
... say no to your Ex's request.
... ask someone out.
... change careers.
... post about your business on Facebook.
... see value in negative feedback.
... remove yourself from a situation that doesn't feel supportive.
... speak up in public about issues that are important to you.
Join me and guest Alyssa Johnson for a freakin' fabulous discussion on healing trauma, building resilience and capacity, and tuning into what's really true.
Here's Alyssa's bio:
Alyssa Johnson is a formerly practicing attorney who now works with lawyers and legal organizations on topics related to lawyer well-being. This includes emotional intelligence, syncing our legal practices with our menstrual cycles, work-life balance, and experiencing more pleasure in Life. Alyssa is also passionate about dismantling White supremacy within the legal profession. She facilitates race literacy conversations with White attorneys to help us heal our race-based trauma and take anti-racist actions within our legal practices.
You can follow her at www.alyssajohnson.love and on Instagram.
She highly recommends the following resources:

Race Literacy:

Any course or book by Milagros Phillips
Can't wait to hear what you think about this episode! Feel free to reply to this email and let me know.
[* For my BIPOC listeners, the first half of the episode focuses on white women healing their race trauma and examples of white women's fragility around race issues. If it doesn't feel nourishing to you to listen in to that, feel free to skip to minute 31:15 to hear about tuning into our menstrual cycle.]

"When feel resourced [to handle grief], then we feel confident. When we have growth in our confidence to experience it [grief], then there's a bit of invincibility. And that invincibility makes us fearless. Then grief is not the same experience anymore in our life."
This week's special guest on Welcome to the Other Side is AmarAtma Khalsa, a Grief Coach and overall delightfully deep human.
AmarAtma (a two word first name that means Eternal or Timeless Soul) is a Grief Coach with advanced certification as a Grief Recovery Specialist. Heâs a Board Certified Chaplain, having worked with thousands of hours with grievers in a Trauma-1 University Hospital specializing in end-of-life care, palliative care, trauma, and critical care. He has a dual Masterâs Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Divinity and uses a trauma-informed, mind-body-spirit approach to teaching and helping grievers from the many losses that occur through life. He currently offers 1:1 virtual grief coaching to grievers on how to grieve and how to let go.
AmarAtma shares a new way of approaching grief in our lives, one that will leave us transformed and ever more resilient.
For the divorced moms in the audience, we talk about the various forms of grief in divorce, including how to grieve loss of control of our kids' lives.
Here are a few quotes from AmarAtma:
"This is real emotional scuba diving."
"Grief is a response, not an emotion."
"Grief in divorce is a death without a body."
"Grief is defined as many emotions at the same time, sometimes contradictory or conflictual with each other; with varying power & energy."
"Grief work is emotional resiliency work."
"We don't drown in our emotions. We drown in our thoughts about our emotions."
Fair warning, you're going to want to hire AmarAtma as soon as you listen to this. I do. He's on my list of next coaches to work with. Brilliant, fun, deep, human.
Enjoy!
p.s. AmarAtma mentioned using a Feelings Wheel to help us get more specific about naming the emotions we're feeling within our grief. Here's an example of a Feelings Wheel: https://feelingswheel.com/

We can shift how we feel in our co-parenting relationship, no matter whether our co-parent changes their behavior or not.Â
We do this by becoming intentional about what we give our focus.Â
When we focus on what is out of our control and spend a lot of time in hypothetical worst case future scenarios, we end up feeling anxious, fearful, and powerless.Â
We we manage our minds (aka direct our thoughts) and focus instead on what is in our control, we feel so much more capable, resourceful, and at ease.Â
In this episode, we'll use a couple different images to help our beautiful brains shift focus so that we can have more of what we really want in our lives!

This is an episode to bookmark and come back to again & again.
I love thoughtwork and becoming more aware of the sentences & stories running thought our brain.
AND thoughtwork is not the only tool in our toolbox.
We live in human bodies that get triggered and feel stressed.
This episode is all about the value of helping regulate our nervous system so that we can reduce the constant stress.
Megan and I nerd out on:
Ignore the barking dog in the background for 30 seconds; they don't know these breathwork tools to reduce their stress :-)
I promise after listening to this episode, you're going to feel more relaxed, grounded, and resourced!

I encourage you to say no.... a lot :-)
I have a wild idea: how's about you ONLY do things you want to do.
It's not how we were raised. We were raised to be good, to be nice, to be helpful... and to do a lot of stuff even if we didn't want to do it.Â
Now as fully formed humans, we have a choice. And if you don't feel like you have a choice, that's where we start our work.Â
When we ONLY do things we want to do, we show up in our relationships in a truly honest, transparent, trustworthy way. It makes it easier for people to believe that we're telling the truth. It makes our relationships richer and a hella lot more fun.Â
Listen in to hear to my reflections on becoming a person that ONLY does things she wants to do.Â

I loved this conversation with Coach Sarah Grace Powers on the power of allowing grief, especially around aging.Â
Sarah Grace Powers is a Certified Life Coach and Body Freedom coach. She works with women who want to feel healthy, vibrant and FREE at midlife and beyond.
We talked about:
how sometimes we avoid letting ourselves feel grief for fear that we'll get stuck in it
clean pain vs. dirty pain
imagining grief as waves that come & go
how melting down (like a caterpillar) can allow for the birth of brand new thingsÂ
using vocalization to help grief move through our bodies
Whether you're grieving a loved one, a divorce, changes that come with aging, or something else, you'll find this to be a very rich conversation.

Have you chatted with your Future Self today? No? Here's your chance!
When we think about our future, we often focus on what we'll be doing or what we will have achieved.
Today we focus on how we want to FEEL.
Those of us in the know (aka you dear listener) recognize that feelings aren't some squishy thing that should be minimized and ignored.
Rather, our feelings are the powertrains that drive everything we do (and avoid doing).
This episode poses the questions:
How does my Future Self, rocking their life in so many ways, feel day-to-day?
AND how can you start feeling that way RIGHT NOW?
Bon Appetit!

Where do you fall on a scale of 1 to 10 on loving your life?
Where's your health on a scale of 1 to 10? Or your relationship?
We can limit ourselves when we think only small improvements are possible.

Plus, the ripple effect of creating more deep connections.

What if there were 20, 30, 40 different potential outcomes to your decision instead of just 2?
We can get stuck in thinking a decision can either go good or bad, right or wrong. But what if there were infinite possibilities between those two ends of the spectrum? How could that help us make decisions?
PLUS- an example of asking your boss for a raise!

Join me for a beach walk!
No roosters this week, but I did see herons, eagles, and a 10' seal napping-- I thought he was a log!
Listen in for a powerful body-awareness exercise.
We can practice experiencing any emotion in a safe, calm setting.
This practice makes it soooo much easier to do things that trigger that emotion.
This works with any tough emotion, even embarrassment, frustration, anger or grief.
By showing ourselves that we will not be destroyed by any emotion, we become more willing to feel a wide range of emotions.
AND THEN, the sky is the limit!
What emotion do you avoid feeling?
How would your life be different if you didn't avoid that feeling?

Whatâs stopping you from making your unique contribution to the world?
Could it be some flavor of fear of failure?
Then this is the episode for you!
My guest is Jeff Leisawitz, an artist, writer, musician, producer & coach for creatives.
I talk with Jeff about our fear of failure & how changing our story makes it possible to take more action.
We also chat about using a scientistâs mindset, demystifying our worse case scenario, & how to see if weâre prioritizing external validation.
Wanna put your first song on Spotify?
Share your poetry on Facebook?
Or stand up for a cause thatâs important to you?
Then this conversation will help you move past fear and into action!

How do we go from struggling in a relationship to thriving?
There's no cookie-cutter approach, that's for sure.
The VERY first thing we need: to believe it's even possible.
This episode is about giving two examples of just that: what's possible.
Relationship Coach Alli Zall and I share post-divorce decisions that moved us from surviving to thriving.
For those of you co-parenting with an Ex, this conversation is about deciding how we want to think about, talk about and show up with our Ex.
For anyone with a challenging relationship not related to divorce, you'll find helpful tools here for focusing on what's in your control.
The relationship you want is really possible!

Many of us have a difficult relationship that we want to improve-- but feel confused about how to do that.
Personal story time! I'll share how 30-hours at the hospital highlighted for me how much one challenging relationship has changed.
Spoiler: it required changing what I thought about myself much more than what I thought about the other person.

I don't have a picture of a 10lb salmon or the Game of Thrones throne, but I do have some interesting insights from the world of dating apps!
Nuggets that we can all use, whether we are dating right now or not:
1) Where in our life do we feel "forced" VERUS where are we "choosing"?
2) Do we tend to make assumptions VERSUS get specific?
3) Are you looking for the cherry to top your sundae VERSUS being stuck in Jerry Maguire?
Enjoy!

Then this is the episode for you!
Jo Renshaw shares the roots of her money story, the decision she made after filing for bankruptcy that changed everything, and why talking OUT LOUD about money can be so transformative.
If we want to have more money-- and to feel less stressed about it-- the first decision we need to make is to look at how we talk about money.
Enjoy!

Hey friend-- Here's the episode you've all been waiting for!
How to be attractive, sexy, beautiful, __________- without a single thing changing about your body!
(OK, not totally true, because your brain will change and, factually speaking, it is part of your body.)
I'm going to take you through my story and share the neuroplasticity tools I used to radically change what I think about my body.
Watch out, because by the end of this episode you might be so hot you leave scorch marks on your couch. đĽ

When was the last time you took 90 minutes and got REALLY specific about the life you want to have?
Most days we are just looking at the next thing on our schedule or To-Do list, or the next meal to make, or the next email to respond to.
When was the last time you looked at all parts of your life and decided if they are exactly how you want them to be? Have you ever done that?
If we don't create the map for our life-- THEN OTHERS AROUND US WILL.
Listen in to hear how I help clients create delicious, powerful visions for their lives.

Enjoy this conversation with my friend & client, writer & poet Sarah Goettsch.
She shares:
-- how coaching changed how she chooses her thoughts
-- where she is building the muscle that allows her to feel scared AND still take action
-- why it helps to realize that not everything you think is true
-- how POWERFUL it can be to change the stories we tell
There will be snowplow metaphors and good chuckles too!
You can read one of Sarah's poems here (I recommend reading on a non-phone screen to see the beautiful layout:

Sometimes we get stuck feeling indecisive or confused about what to do because we're trying to figure out which choice will make us happier--- or AT LEAST which one won't make us feel worse!
And being stuck is draining! Ruminating about a decision over and over again, takes lots of mental bandwidth and stops us from moving forward.
So what would happen if we stopped believing a decision has the power to affect how happy we feel?
What if there wasn't a WRONG decision?
What if we're going to have the same mix of feelings, no matter what we decide? Then, how do we make decisions????

Listen in to learn why something that doesn't bother us one day (like a tween's eye roll) can generate anger and frustration the next. We'll also discuss why thinking about your brain as a TV screen allows us not to believe everything we think.
