Did you know Christianity and Judaism actually have a lot in common? Christianity and Judaism as we know them today were born out of the second temple period Judaism's of the first century and over time, they redefined themselves in opposition to one another creating a chasm that originally did not exist. On each episode, we will journey to cross the chasm and reconcile these two great religions, to find commonality, and points of intersection by reviewing relevant scripture and scholarship.
On todays episode, I am interviewing Dr. Mark Nanos. Mark Nanos is a Jewish historian with a research focus on the Apostle Paul. His research involves investigating ways to read Paul’s letters “within Judaism” during the mid-first century, re-conceptualizing how to interpret Paul with major implications in regard to views of Jews and Judaism within Christianity. Dr. Nanos holds a PhD from the University of St Andrews in Scotland and an honorary PhD from the University of Lund in Sweden. He is a winner of the National Jewish Book Award for Christian-Jewish Relations and the cofounder of the Paul within Judaism section in the Society of Biblical Literature. He has authored books such as The Mystery of Romans, The Irony of Galatians, Paul within Judaism, and a multi volume work titled Reading Paul within Judaism. In today’s episode we will be discussing one his recent papers titled “Re-Framing Paul’s Opposition to Erga Nomou as “Rites of a Custom” for Proselyte Conversion Completed by the Synecdoche “Circumcision”

I started this journey a little over 10 years ago I had always understood Christianity to be the antithesis to Judaism ...And in some sense this is true, but I’ve learned this wasn’t always the case. I have learned that Christianity and Judaism as we know them today were born out of the second temple period Judaism's of the first century and over time, they redefined themselves in opposition to one another creating a chasm that originally did not exist. On this channel, we will journey together to cross the chasm between Christianity and Judaism to reconcile these two great religions. I will share what I am learning, and we will grow in our understanding together. We will cover the various traditions of these faiths and learn how they can inform our understanding of God. We will discuss our commonalities and differences and discover how the chasm was created. We will learn about the Jewishness of Jesus and His early followers and why it matters.
