We are Eric and Elaine, a husband-and-wife coaching team, parents of six daughters, married 26 years, and are authors and entrepreneurs. A city girl and country boy, both from single-parent households, engaged three months after meeting, despite there being a baby on the way from a prior relationship, a near-fatal car accident, and an armed robbery during our engagement. We have a unique perspective because we overcame major setbacks, conflict, and loss to establish a nonprofit, author a book, and launch a relationship coaching business. SMITH vs. ROCK - WILL SMITH SMACKS CHRIS ROCK AT THE OSCARS - NEGRO CATCH 22
The Oscars SmackDown between #Will Smith and comedian #Chris rock has broken the Internet. But that’s not the only thing it’s broken, the hearts and expectations of African-American and African diaspora around the world.
There seems to be a catch 22 – on the one hand, you have something that has been rare where you see a black man defending a black woman out in the open. On the other hand, you see one intelligent black man slap another intelligent black man (both icons in their own right) on live television galvanizing the black-on-black violence narrative. No matter who you bet on, the negro community takes an “L” in the bout?
It all depends on how you look at it. We are going to explore the positives and negatives in this inaugural “Sweet Tea” segment where we extract the “sweet” out of the trending relationship “tea.”

We recently witnessed two high profile suicides in the Negro community with untimely deaths of 30-year-old 2019 Miss USA, Cheslie Kryst, and 26-year-old Ian Alexander Jr., son of Eric’s childhood crush, esteemed actor-director Regina King.
According to statistics, Negros and Latino people are least likely to take their lives in comparison to the US average. However, numbers have been rising in the past decade.
Those who are left behind are impacted in ways that reverberate the trauma of losing a loved one over and over again year after year. Parental relationships, if married, can result in divorce. When you’re the partner of the deceased, your subsequent relationships could experience challenges.
The losses that our community and our world is experiencing are taking place more than the dialogue. Let’s talk about what we can learn from the loved ones around us. Doing so will literally save lives.
From a pandemic to the pressure of desiring some sense of “normalcy,” one lesson may be that communication and mental health go hand in hand.
