Neural pathways are the connections between different neurons in our brains, and they're responsible for everything from our thoughts and emotions to our behaviors and habits. This means that we have the ability to shape our own brains and change the way we think and behave. Where does God fit into all this? Join us and find out how we see it.

Today, the show gets a little more personal as Mark and Justin discuss the subject of Depression. Mark and Justin are no strangers to this subject. Justin's familiarity is tied to his intermittent battle with it, while Mark encounters its effects near-daily through his therapy practice.
Those who fight their mental health issues also have to fight the stigma associated with them. The most important thing we can do culturally to fight this stigma is to talk openly about the subject. To help others know, "you are not alone!"
We hope you find this episode helpful, ironically encouraging, and stubbornly hopeful. We would love it if you share it with those in your life who may be fighting this same battle.
Mark brings a surprise topic to the How I See It studio this morning: Politics!
This topic can elicit deep feelings of anxiety, anger, fear, fight/flight, and it's certainly at the top of the charts when it comes to polarization. We have an opportunity (some would say responsibility) to engage this important topic and to encourage honest enlightened conversations that go beyond the surface-level talking points. We take a broad look at a few of these points and highlight many obstacles which make these conversations so difficult. Some questions we discuss:
How can you find "truth" amid the polarized viewpoints across news outlets and talking heads?
Is there value in voting straight party line? Is voting independent a waste of a vote?
Where does the kingdom of God fit in? Does Jesus provide a model for us to follow?
How can we engage with those who have opposite and equally passionate views on these political subjects?
Listen in as we share how we see it.

Today we spend some time reflecting on our memories of that fateful day, September 11, 2001. We also discuss the 9/11 mantra, "Never Forget!"âboth the merits as well as the potential issues, and further expound on the challenges of trauma, whether it's from the proximity of an intense event like 9/11, or interpersonal/relational trauma.
Today's discussion is on the art of listeningâways to improve on this invaluable skill, as well as being able to suss out clues when we're not being listened to. We agreed that we all can be a better version of ourselves as we continue to learn and improve our listening skills. And unironically, we thank you, the listener, for... listening! We appreciate you spending your valuable time with us!

Part 2 of our interview with Elias Dummer (a Canadian musician, songwriter, and writer well-known for co-founding the contemporary Christian band the City Harmonic) about all things worship, his new album (The Work, Vol 2), favorite memories and songs from The City Harmonic days, (Manifesto anyone?!?!), and many other things.
Note: There is a significant echo on Elias' voice during parts of this episode. We apologize, we are still learning the ins/outs and this was our first interview over Zoom! We love what Elias had to share, so we decided to release it with this disclaimer.
Check out Part 1.
We hope you enjoy these episodes, and we also highly recommend you check out his new album, The Work, Vol 2.

Stay tuned for part 2 next week.
Continuing the discussion on conflict, we highlight âbaby stepsâ for learning to approach conflict in a healthy way, for those on the codependent end of the spectrum as well as the domineering end. We hope this episode can offer some helpful ideas for anyone on that spectrum.
"Some misguided Christian leaders feel that they must preserve harmony at any cost, so they do everything possible to reduce friction. They should remember that there is no friction in a machine that has been shut down for the night. Turn off the power, and you will have no problem with moving parts. Also remember that there is a human society where there are no problemsâthe cemetery. The dead have no differences of opinion. They generate no heat, because they have no energy and no motion. But their penalty is sterility and complete lack of achievement."
Today we discuss this quote by A.W. Tozer and how conflict is an often-avoided, but mandatory component of every (living!) person's life.
Welcome back for Part 2! Last week, we got started in our conversation with Chris Pratt, Mark's wife and Kellie Perry. In this two-part episode, we're discussing a topic these women are so passionate about, Early Education. We chat about the value of reading in the home, what aspects of education can be polarizing, and with all the educational offerings and opportunities, how do you choose the best option for your kids and your family, and In this 2nd part, we share how each of our educations shaped us.
This episode was another treat for us as we got to have Chris Pratt, Mark's wife back on the show, along with Kellie Perry, Justin's sister-in-law who has, in her words, become podcast famous for cameo mentions in previous episodes (the Wives episode). In this two-part episode, we'll discuss a topic these women are so passionate about, Early Education. We chat about the value of reading in the home, what aspects of education can be polarizing, and with all the educational offerings and opportunities, how do you choose the best option for your kids and your family?
Make sure to catch next week's episode (part 2) as well, and we'll share a valuable resource on next week's show page.
Creation vs Evolution: this ongoing debate, now spanning 3 centuries, is certainly a heavyweight contender for "Most Polarizing Topic". Mark and Justin explore this topic of our origin, acknowledging even the polarized beliefs among those considering themselves "Creationists", and discussing the immense possibilities for a God who can create a universe.
Today, Mark and Justin talk (some may say nerd out) about the value of planting and growing things. They discuss the valuable lessons emphasized through the natural processes that occur in the life-cycle of a plant â things like seasons, dormancy, blooms, and fruit. The metaphors for life seem to never stop, and in the end, we encourage you, the listener, to consider planting something of your own so you can enjoy the same lessons, therapeutic benefits, and even fruit that comes from cultivating a living plant.
What is worship? Is the dictionary definition adequate. Is it an experience? Is it an action? Is it a state of mind? Is it dependent on a deity? So many question, too little time, but In today's episode, we discuss how we see worship, and we would love to hear how you see it. How often do we confuse thoughts for emotions and vice-versa? Certainly, our vocabulary doesn't help when we say "I feel like" to describe what we're thinking and "I think" when explaining how we feel. Today, we discuss that conundrum, the distinction between these two parts of our psyche, and some practical strategies for communicating our thoughts and feelings.
What's more polarizing than a good 'ole Calvinism/Arminianism standoff?! Today, Mark and Justin take on this vast subject that pits the seemingly opposing views of God's sovereignty versus man's free will. Is there room for both? Can we have our cake and eat it too? Maybe we don't answer all the questions, but we certainly share a bit more about how we see it.
Happy Day-after-the-4th! We hope you had your fill of fireworks and funnel cake as we celebrated the anniversary of our nation's declaration of freedom!
Last week we shared the first part of our chat with Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jason Disbrow. We've heard a lot of great feedback on the episode, as Judge Disbrow shared some thought-provoking insight into the workings of the court, and we discussed the inherent polarized views of "the law." Part 2 is no exception, as the continued conversation veers in a more personal direction.
Listen in as Mark and Justin cross-examine our newest guest, Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Jason Disbrow. Join us as we get a fascinating "How I See It" look behind the Judge's bench, hearing some of the nuances of making judgments, how the system works, and how "The Law" can be polarizing, depending on which side of it you may find yourself on.
And stay tuned as we continue next week in part 2, where we'll get a special glimpse into the heart of this particular Judge.
In this 2nd part of our conversation with Mary Beth, we continue the topic of integrative health and ways we can optimize our bodyâs natural systems. We also work at convincing her to start a blog AND a podcast, and finally, Mary Beth asks us how we got started with âHow I See Itâ.
As this is a continuation of last week, forgive us again for the audio not being up to our usual standards.

In this special guest episode, we chat with our good friend Mary Beth Fuchs, who has been in the healthcare industry for many years, and experienced many facets, both good and bad, within the industry. Join us as we learn a ton from Mary Beth about our bodies' natural systems for promoting our health, the healthcare industry, and many other tidbits, as we get a glimpse into how she sees it.
Leadership is a topic man has been mulling over for centuries. So forgive us as we indulge, discussing the difference between what is typically known as leadership vs what we call "true leadership." Is leadership an innate quality or something that can be developed? If there were dogs to demonstrate leadership, are you more of a border collie or a golden retriever?
Rest and productivity are seemingly at odds to one another. Yet itâs impossible to remain truly productive without factoring rest in to the equation (or can we simply live on a steady diet of caffeine??). Is there value in rest without productivity being the goal? Join us and find out (how we see it). Better yet, drop us a comment on social media and let us know how YOU see it!

What makes someone âuser-friendlyâ? What does that have to do with software? Weâre not sure either, but we tie them together anyway. Listen in as we discuss how attachment styles and love languages affect how we see it.
"The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry." What do you do when you start to sense your week getting away from you? In this episode, we discuss a tool Mark uses to reset and recenter when the week becomes overwhelming or we fail to meet our expectations set out. He calls it the blank page exercise.
Who's Chesterton and why are we talking about his fence? In this episode, we discuss the benefits of "Second Order Thinking", a concept outlined in an article we came across recently. Listen in and find out what those benefits are, and what they possibly have to do with a fence.
What is a mission statement and its purpose? Do you have one? Does the company you work for? Is it just corporate-sounding jargon, and completely disregarded in daily dealings and interactions?
Is a mission statement a resource worth developing, or belongs in the "special filing cabinet" (the wastebasket đ)? Find out how we see it in today's episode all about mission statements. đ¤
In this SECOND part of our FIRST guest episode, we continue the conversation with our better halves! We chat about life, secret crushes, marriage, woodchucks and damp towels. Maybe as you see how THEY see it, you'll gain some insights to why WE see it the way we do. We had a blast sharing memories together, and we hope you enjoy this special episode of "How I See It"!

In a discussion on gender, and related issues (toxic masculinity, feminism, alternative lifestyles), do we manage to offend everyone? Hopefully not. As 2 men with wives and daughters, we discuss how weâve been increasingly learning the value of gender, that gender is not equal to role, and many other lessons.
What does âa little more be alrightâ look like to the âHow I See Itâ podcast? We chat about the idea of ads/endorsements, our growing audience (â53 more than we had!!â), how we should handle editing ourselves and poorly stated things, and most importantly, whether the blue tape holding the mic on the stand is the real MVP.
Today, we discuss being powerful/powerless. Starting with contemplation on the nuanced definitions words can take on (such as âHumorâ), we move into consideration of the word âPowerââthe powerlessness over our environment, and the power we may have over our response to it.
Listen to Mark sarcastically explain the value of sarcasm in humor. No, he would NEEEEver do that. No really, he wouldnât. Seriously, heâs not a sarcastic guy. But we do chat about humor & levity. When does it go too far? When could we benefit from a little more humor? Where do we get our dad/bad jokes? Find out in todayâs episode!
Today, Mark asks Justin, âWhatâs your take on the Holy Spirit?â â This is a genuine âHow I See Itâ conversation about a very personal topic for both of usâour beliefs on the Holy Spiritâs role in our lives.
In this episode, Justin and Mark discuss the value of changing our minds. Should we be open-minded? Will our brains fall out? Who should change their mindsâboomers or millennials? Today weâll work on solving all these mysteries in âHow I See Itâ style.
Mark and Justin on âMarkisms'' and todayâs topic: Integrity. They share their perspectives on it, its value in their lives, the process to learn that value, and tips for developing it (hint, you can't purchase it by the 5 gallon bucket at the General Store...).
A (sometimes awkward!) introduction to this podcast, and to Mark and Justin, your hosts. We meander through a few of the potential themes, and future guests. We explain our desire is to mine the nuggets of truth that exist on both sides (and often in the middle) of difficult polarizing topics, all while gaining new perspective. We look forward to the journey and the process with you! This is âHow We See Itâ!
