Welcome to The German Fussball Podcast, with Jan Aage Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus Fjørtoft (@MarkusFjortoft)! Each week, we will discuss the latest talking points, news, analysis, and behind-the-scenes stories from the Bundesliga, along with special guests.
Vincent Kompany’s Bayern look unstoppable — 25 goals in six games, two record-breaking scorers, and a team evolving before our eyes. Luis Díaz’s blistering form and Harry Kane’s ruthless finishing are powering a side that’s scoring for fun — and they’re still missing Musiala and Davies. Neuer looks world-class again, Pavlović keeps growing, and Kompany’s structure already feels complete. Can they go unbeaten this season? Meanwhile, Leipzig’s next generation, Bakayoko, Rômulo, Diomande, Nusa, are part of a revived RB Leipzig team that has found back to its roots. Eintracht also boast the youngest squad in the league, but they're finding consistency hard to come by. What can they accomplish this season? At the other end, Gladbach’s struggles deepen: no wins, no sporting direction, and no clarity about the future. Markus and Jan Åge Fjørtoft discuss this, while reflecting on the key moments from a weekend where, Stuttgart, Cologne, and Leverkusen all strengthened their early-season form, and Hamburg secured a statement win against Mainz.
The Champions League is back — and Germany’s four representatives are all in the spotlight.
Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern beat Chelsea on Matchday 1, and now they head to Pafos looking to keep the momentum going. And why "boring" Bayern is a credit to Kompany...
Dortmund’s 4-4 chaos in Turin showed both their firepower and their fragility. Niko Kovač has them winning domestically, but can they find the balance in Europe when Athletic Bilbao come to town?
Leverkusen rescued a late draw at Copenhagen thanks to Grimaldo. Now PSV visit the BayArena in what feels like Kasper Hjulmand’s first real test on the continental stage.
And then there’s Eintracht Frankfurt. Burkardt, Uzun, and a new-look attack swept Galatasaray aside, but Simeone’s Atlético in Madrid will be a very different challenge. With Atleti’s defence already looking shaky this season, could Frankfurt be primed for another statement?
We also touch on Freiburg and Stuttgart’s Europa League assignments, plus Mainz’s return to Europe in the Conference League.
Jan was in Munich as Harry Kane reached 100 goals for Bayern in record time, speaking with him on his historic day. But with speculation about his future, why should Kane ever leave?
We also break down Dortmund’s revival under Niko Kovač, Frankfurt’s 6-4 chaos at Gladbach and the emergence of Can Uzun as a potential €100m star, plus the big question around Augsburg — is Wagner in trouble, or is this simply the growing pains of a club trying to push forward?
All that plus highlights from Stuttgart, Leipzig, Leverkusen, Heidenheim, Union, Hamburg and Hoffenheim.
What a Bundesliga weekend! From Ollie Burke’s historic hat-trick for Union Berlin to Harry Kane’s unstoppable record chase at Bayern, Markus and Jan Åge Fjørtoft break it all down. We cover Eintracht’s setback after their Champions League high, hat-trick hero Ollie Burke’s incredible journey, Harry Kane’s historic record chase at Bayern, the Bundesliga table taking shape with Leipzig, Dortmund & Hamburg win, and is it back to reality for Augsburg's Sandro Wagner?
Jan Åge was pitchside for ESPN at Leverkusen vs Eintracht Frankfurt, alongside Dietmar Hamann and Archie Rhind-Tutt.He shares his thoughts on Grimaldo’s free-kick brilliance to Frankfurt’s injury worries, plus his own marathon weekend of Bundesliga and Premier League coverage. Plus, what Kasper Hjulmand said on unity & body language, Dino Toppmöller on Frankfurt’s slow play, and Nathan Tella’s reflections on Leverkusen’s start. What did you make of Hjulmand’s early impact at Leverkusen? 👇Meanwhile Bayern are firing on all cylinders, and are preparing for their first Champions League game of the season against Chelsea.

In this exclusive interview with Markus Fjørtoft, he discusses building a winning foundation in MLS on a modest payroll, lessons from working with Klopp, Tuchel & Schalke’s rise and struggles, why football clubs struggle with sustainability — and where real growth opportunities lie, the Bundesliga’s challenge in a Premier League world, and the story behind bringing Thomas Müller to Vancouver.
From blockbuster departures to bold new arrivals, the Bundesliga summer transfer window was full of drama. But who makes Jan’s Top 5 signings of 2025? Will it be Wirtz? Díaz? Or someone else entirely? His answer might surprise you.
Erik ten Hag’s turbulent Leverkusen spell went from transition to crisis in just weeks. From the public clash with Rolfes over Xhaka to strange training sessions and tactical confusion, SPORT BILD say there was “no way back.” Where do Leverkusen go from here?
We also break down Bundesliga’s wild deadline day — Nicolas Jackson to Bayern, Openda to Juve, Hamburg’s Arsenal double swoop, and Boniface's surprise loan move to Werder Bremen.

Markus and Jan Åge break down Bayern’s €75M move for Luis Díaz. Is this the kind of signing that takes them to the next level in Europe — or just another high-cost patch job?
We explore Benjamin Šeško’s future, Manchester United’s striker dilemma, and the real question: go proven with Watkins or gamble again on potential?
Then it's Leverkusen. Alonso gone. Tah, Frimpong, Xhaka — all out. Can Erik ten Hag handle the biggest rebuild in club history?

In the second episode of our The Fussball Coach series, we're joined by a true Bundesliga legend and current LAFC Head Coach, Steve Cherundolo.
From San Diego to Hannover, he spent his entire 16-year playing career with one club, earning legendary status at Hannover 96.
A former USMNT mainstay, Cherundolo became known for his leadership, intelligence, and loyalty on and off the pitch.
After retiring, he started coaching in Germany, then leaped back to the U.S. to take over LAFC — where in just over three years, he’s reached six finals, won an MLS Cup, Supporters’ Shield, and the U.S. Open Cup, and recorded more wins than any other MLS coach since 2022.
But now? He’s announced this will be his final season in LA — and he’s heading back to Europe.
We sit down with Steve to talk about that decision, the Bundesliga years, what coaching means to him, and where his next chapter might unfold.
In this episode, we break down the complex striker carousel unfolding between Liverpool, Newcastle, and Eintracht Frankfurt — with Hugo Ekitike at the center.
We explore the chain reaction that could begin with Isak, examine the valuation of Ekitike at €100M, and explain why Eintracht are in no rush to sell. We also dig into Bayern’s latest transfer offers — from Luis Díaz to Nick Woltemade — and ask whether there’s any clear strategy behind their approach under Vincent Kompany.
In this insightful and powerful conversation which kicks off our new The Fussball Coach series, Uwe Rösler joins Jan Åge Fjørtoft to reflect on a remarkable journey through football and life. From his childhood in East Germany’s rigid football system to becoming a Manchester City fan-favorite, overcoming cancer, and building a coaching career across Europe — this episode covers resilience, leadership, and change. The pair share stories from their time at Lillestrøm, discuss football philosophy, and reflect on what it takes to build something impactful in the game.

From Jamal Musiala’s serious ankle injury and the reactions of Manuel Neuer and Vincent Kompany, to a deeper look at how Kompany has defined his role as Bayern Head Coach in the middle of chaos. We follow up on Bayern’s transfer strategy, the players they’ve missed out on, and the way media narratives are shaping negotiations, through Jan's "conspiracy theory". We also dissect Dortmund’s 3–2 defeat to Real Madrid, and to what degree we can deem it a success, and reflect on Eintracht Frankfurt’s smart signing of Jonny Burkardt.
We take you deep inside the drama unfolding at Bayern Munich. As the club prepares to launch its opening bid for Nick Woltemade, tensions are rising on all fronts.
We break down the internal valuation, the personal terms already agreed, and the looming negotiations with Stuttgart. But it’s not just about money, it's also about influence. Uli Hoeneß and Lothar Matthäus are once again at odds, trading blows over public interference in Bayern’s transfer dealings.
Meanwhile, Max Eberl faces the challenge of building for the future under financial pressure, with the Club World Cup offering a welcome revenue boost, and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens slipping away to Chelsea.
From exclusive insider quotes to the strategic tension behind the scenes, this episode unpacks the full story around Bayern’s next big move.

Jan and Markus break down the latest Champions League action, touching on the inevitability of Real Madrid, the growth of PSG, and Arsenal’s push for European glory. But the real focus is on the German teams.
Bayern delivered a vintage Champions League performance, dismantling Leverkusen in dominant fashion. With Harry Kane leading the charge, are they now strong enough to beat Inter? Meanwhile, Leverkusen looked a shadow of their Bundesliga-best selves. Was this a step backward, or just an off tie? They needed a miracle and Florian Wirtz. They got neither. And was it more about how they went out rather than the fact they did?
Then there’s Dortmund. Tenth in the Bundesliga. A loss to Augsburg at the weekend. And yet, they managed to turn it around against Lille to reach the quarter-finals. How do we make sense of that?
Plenty of questions, plenty of talking points—this is the Champions League through a Bundesliga lens.

With Markus and Jan Fjortoft at the helm and the seventh round concluded, Bayern's attacking dynamite continues to dominate the headlines after a 4-0 victory over fellow Champions League contenders Stuttgart. Harry Kane ended his goal drought, propelling Bayern to the top of the table, level on points with RB Leipzig. Despite Marco Rose's team being unbeaten in 18 matches and having conceded only two goals so far, there has been only muted talk of them as title challengers this season. Can they win the league? And why is there a lack of excitement around the club's achievements?
Elsewhere in the round, Leverkusen secured a controversial win over in-form Eintracht, drawing intense frustration from Toppmöller and his team. Freiburg recorded their best-ever start to a season, while Bochum parted ways with their head coach after managing just one point in seven games.

However, after a week filled with European games for seven German teams, there are rumors emerging from the Bayern camp suggesting that Thomas Müller might be considering a departure. Are they true? The question remains: Are these rumors true, and what draws these German superstars to Bayern? Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer has hit the ground running for Bayern. There is trouble in the kingdom of Dortmund! How do we analyze their situation? What should we expect from Borussia Dortmund, and is there something wrong with their culture? They have now equaled Guardiola's Bayern from the 2015/16 season for the best start to a Bundesliga season. Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus Fjortoft (@MarkusFjortoft) recap what can only be described as an astonishing final round in both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga! Dortmund's hopes of clinching the Bundesliga title were dashed when they settled for a draw against Mainz at home. In a nail-biting finish, Bayern managed to secure a late victory against Köln, sealing their eleventh consecutive title. Outside Westfallenstadion, a staggering crowd of 60,000 fans eagerly anticipated Dortmund's triumph over Bayern, but a combination of factors, primarily psychological, proved to be the decisive factor.
In a remarkable turn of events, Union improved upon their position from the previous season and remarkably secured a well-deserved spot in the Champions League, alongside RB Leipzig. Meanwhile, despite Schalke's impressive resurgence in the latter half of the season, their efforts fell short, resulting in their relegation to the 2. Bundesliga alongside Hertha Berlin. Taking their places in the top flight are Darmstadt and Heidenheim, who earned promotion. The playoffs will witness Stuttgart and Hamburg battling it out for the last remaining Bundesliga spot, adding another layer of excitement to this thrilling weekend.

Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus Fjortoft (@MarkusFjortoft) enjoyed a lengthy chat about life and the Bundesliga. Jan had spent the last four days in Munich, dissecting the weekend's events (alongside Stefan Effenberg, who joins us in this episode) and the ongoing stories surrounding Bayern - particularly Thomas Müller and his uncertain future. Jan discussed Müller's meetings with Brazzo and Kahn (and not Tuchel), highlighting the unique nature of the situation in Germany. Further, he discussed the segment he did over the weekend in which German television went through all his comments on Bayern over the last year, which all proved to be true. So much for Bayern not being interested in Haaland... Meanwhile, Markus went back to his roots in Swindon and celebrated with the airplane gesture.
However, there was little cause for celebration at Eintracht, as tensions continued to rise between Head Coach Glasner and the management. Jan analyzed the situation from an insider's perspective. They also discussed the disappointing lack of goals from the top scorers, with fan-favorite Füllkrug leading the list. Additionally, they delved into the fiercely contested relegation battle and the teams vying to replace them, as Hamburg SV aimed to end their five-year Bundesliga absence and catch up to Darmstadt and Heidenheim.

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt CEO Alex Hellmann has committed to staying for the remainder of his contract, ensuring one of their main sources of continuity remains put. We also have a special greeting from Ted Lasso and an "exclusive" with Usain Bolt.

Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) has been somewhat stealing the headlines in German Football ever since he exclusively announced that Bayern was strongly considering firing CEO Oliver Kahn. Markus Fjortoft (@MarkusFjortoft) talks with him to discuss how he's experienced seeing the story develop since then, his analysis of why Kahn is more at risk of being removed than Sports Director Salihamidžić, and what role Uli Hoeneß plays in all this.
Further, they discuss Dortmund topping the league and their biggest enemy being... themselves, as well as the re-emergence of Bayer Leverkusen led by Xabi Alonso as they chase the Champions League spots against the likes of Union Berlin, Freiburg, and RB Leipzig.

It appears that the departure of Oliver Kahn, the CEO of Bayern Munich, is an ongoing process and just a matter of time according to sources of Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft).
It seems that the club hierarchy is beginning to recognize the importance of accountability at all levels, including those in higher positions. Following Bayern's controversial decision to replace Julian Nagelsmann with Thomas Tuchel ahead of a season-defining run-in, and the subsequent failures, responsibility is now being shifted to CEO Oliver Kahn.

Markus Fjortoft (@MarkusFjortoft) and Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) discuss Dortmund's treacherous performance against relegation-threatening Stuttgart, as they slipped up despite playing against 10 men for the majority of the game. To what degree can we deem this a "typical" Dortmund performance despite their strong second half of the season, and in what ways are captain Marco Reus and Manager Edin Terzić culpable?
We also delve into the bust-up between Leroy Sané and Sadio Mané and the latter's record fine, as well as Hertha Berlin's new managerial appointment as they desperately look to avoid relegation.

Markus Fjortoft (@MarkusFjortoft) and Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) dive into the questions surrounding Bayern München and its leadership. With the recent appointment of Thomas Tuchel, Bayern's chances of competing on multiple fronts seem to have dwindled, leaving the Bundesliga as their main focus. But where does Bayern go from here? The "manager card" has already been played, so what's next for the team, especially in light of recent events and their summer transfer dealings?
We also discuss the latest developments in the race for Jude Bellingham, as Liverpool reportedly cools off their interest despite earlier reports of an offer.

Germany exit the World Cup at the group stages. Crisis? Yes. A moment of reckoning? Absolutely. Since the World Cup victory in 2014, the German National Team have been on a downward spiral. Questions will now be asked of German talent development and the people responsible. The balance of the team was off (yet again, no clear #9), their best player at the tournament was a 19-year-old (good or bad?) developed at an English Academy, and their defence struggled.
Markus Fjørtoft (@MarkusFjortoft) asks Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) to dissect the debable, including the negative effects the Bayern block and the "inwards" mentality is having on German football.

Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus Fjørtoft (@MarkusFjortoft) had the pleasure of talking to RB Leipzig Goalkeeper, Norwegian International, and former Premier League goalkeeper for our first guest in the "Player´s Corner".
Following a break-out season at Norwegian Championship club Hødd, in which he won the Norwegian Cup and became MOTM in the final, he made his way to Molde and Ole Gunnar Solskjær before heading to his first period in the Bundesliga with FC Ingolstadt under Ralph Hasenhüttl. He stayed there for three years before heading to England where he had various stints in the Championship and Premier League, most notably with Aston Villa. He has 40 caps for Norway and signed for RB Leipzig in October for the remainder of the season.
Ørjan was kind and open enough to share his football journey, from an ambitious and hugely talented young goalkeeper in Norway, to a more experienced and mature goalkeeper now back in Germany. Enjoy!

The thirteenth weekend of the Bundesliga is concluded along with the midweek games, most popularly referred to as the "Englische Woche" in Germany. Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus Fjørtoft (@MarkusFjortoft) are here to discuss that, plus the Champions League involvement of four Bundesliga teams: Bayern München, Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig, and Borussia Dortmund. Why are Nagelsmann and Bayern, Glasner and Eintracht, and Rose and RB Leipzig in particular performing so well at the moment? Wolfsburg have responded strongly under the leadership of Kovac following their weak start to the campaign. Why? The "English Week" also proved fruitful for Xabi Alonso as his Bayer Leverkusen earned two wins in a row, one of which was the 5-0 win against the then league leaders Union Berlin. We discuss his unconventional start in professional football, the success of Werder Bremen and his second home, the undefined aura of the legendary Otto Rehhagel, breaking records with the Norwegian national team, thoughts on Werder Bremen ahead of this season, and last but not least, his Dream XI consisting of players he's played with.

Welcome to the first episode of The German Fussball Podcast with Jan Åge Fjørtoft (@JanAageFjortoft) and Markus Fjørtoft (@MarkusFjortoft)! For our first episode, we discuss all things Bayern München. Bayern's transfer window seemed to be turning into somewhat of a nightmare for the fans. No Haaland. The risk of losing Lewandowski and “no money” apparently to strengthen the team. Yes! They lost their topscorer, but they have also gotten stars such as Mané and de Ligt. Head of Sport, Salihamidžić, has done a great job and the club has shown real intent in the transfer market. We talk to THE Bayern Insider about Bayern’s change of strategy, where all the money comes from and the management's success.
