Head Men's Basketball Coach Jake Scott describes his approach when he was given the opportunity to take over two different struggling programs at his first two NCAA Division III basketball coaching stops.
He provides insight on developing a positive team culture and the importance of focusing on experience to help drive his program forward.
Finally, we discuss his process when he prepares for a coaching position interview as he now takes over his third NCAA Division III program. Just after recording this podcast Coach Jake Scott was announced as the new head men's basketball coach at Keuka College!
Jake Scott Bio Recap:
Keuka College has named Jake Scott as the fifth head men's basketball coach in program history.
Scott comes to Keuka College following four seasons at SUNY Cobleskill. He guided the Fighting Tigers to back-to-back winning records in his last two seasons, including making the third North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament appearance in program history in 2019.
He takes over at an exciting time for Keuka College Athletics. The 2020-21 year will mark the first for Keuka College as a full member of the Empire 8 Conference.
Scott brings years of coaching experience to Keuka Park. Prior to being at SUNY Cobleskill, he was an assistant director of athletics and head men's basketball coach at SUNY Maritime. He began his collegiate coaching career at the Rochester Institute of Technology, serving three years as an assistant for legendary coach Bob McVean.
A Victor, N.Y., native, Scott earned his bachelor's degree from St. John Fisher College, before earning his master's degree as a graduate assistant coach at Division I Virginia Commonwealth University.
Head Coach Rob Pryor and Assistant Coach Derek Brooks share their professional path from U.S. Air Force Academy graduates to becoming the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy basketball coaching staff. Pryor and Brooks share their coaching philosophy and describe how they INSPIRE, EQUIP, EMPOWER, and SUPPORT their midshipmen-athletes as they focus on individual and team leadership development. We discuss the importance of diversity and inclusion in leadership and in sports. Finally, we breakdown the USMMA NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Team and what it takes to motivate athletes at the Academy.
Rob Pryor Bio Recap:
Rob Pryor was named the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2017.
Pryor comes to the Mariners after spending the past six seasons at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., where he was just the second full-time head coach in Hornets’ program history. He oversaw the program’s move from the USA South Athletic Conference to the very competitive Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Under his tenure between the two conferences, Pryor coached four student-athletes that were honored as All-Conference players and had an impressive 25 student-athletes earn Academic All-Conference accolades.
After graduating from the Academy in 1997 with a degree in human behavior, Pryor earned a master's degree in education with an emphasis in counseling in 1998 from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Following his schooling, he began his first Air Force assignment as a contracting officer at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.
During his four-year stint at Langley, Pryor earned an MBA degree at the College of William & Mary before returning to the Academy in 2002.
Derek Brooks Bio Recap:
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball head coach Rob Pryor announced the addition of Derek Brooks as an assistant coach for the Mariners ahead of the 2018-19 season.
Brooks, a 2011 U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, served on the women's basketball staff at his alma mater as an assistant coach and intercollegiate program manager for three seasons from 2014-2017. He was responsible for managing Air Force's recruiting, planning and training, while also handling the team's budget. He also produced scouting reports and video highlights of the Falcons' opponent to prepare the team for their games.
Prior to working at Air Force, Brooks, who has ranked as high as Captain in the U.S. Air Force, spent three years at Hanscom AFB, Mass., as a financial management officer. During his time in Massachusetts, he served as an assistant varsity basketball coach at Thayer Academy during the 2011-12 season, as well as the head coach for the 17-and-under, 14-and-under and 11-and-under teams at the Middlesex Magic AAU Program from 2012-2014.
Brooks, who earned his bachelor's degree in social sciences, enjoyed an outstanding basketball career with Air Force from 2008-11. A four-year letter winner and captain of the 2011 Falcons, Brooks helped lead Air Force to a berth in the College Insider Tournament. As a senior, Brooks averaged 10 points and five rebounds per game, while shooting 49% from the field and 43% from three-point range.
After his senior season, Brooks earned the highest honor a USAFA men's basketball player can achieve – the Bob Spear Award, given to the student-athlete that is outstanding in all areas of the Academy - academics, athletics and military performance.
Sharief Hashim shares his personal journey through the early stages of his career in college athletics. Hashim details how he began his coaching career and explains how he decided to pursue new opportunities in college coaching and administration. We focus on the importance of networking and building relationships both personally and professionally.

*Hashim was appointed the director of athletics at Susquehanna University July 1, 2020. Hashim joined the River Hawks athletics department after serving in the same capacity for two years at SUNY Potsdam. Prior to his tenure at SUNY Potsdam, he served as director of athletics at Southern Vermont College, Bennington. Hashim was appointed the interim director of athletics at Southern Vermont in October 2016, before having the interim tag removed in July 2017. As AD, he oversaw internal and external compliance to college policies and NCAA rules and regulations. He also managed department staffing, budgets and NCAA grants. In addition, Hashim was a member of senior leadership and collaborated with other campus administrators on enrollment management and diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Prior to serving as AD, he held multiple roles at Southern Vermont. Hashim originally joined the staff as junior varsity men's basketball coach, athletics liaison and admissions counselor in April 2013. During the 2016-17 season, he also served as interim head women's basketball coach.
Hashim is a 2008 graduate of Columbia Union College, Takoma Park, Maryland, and holds a bachelor's degree in organizational management with a minor in counseling psychology. He earned his master's in athletic administration from Southern New Hampshire University in 2016.*
