Four years ago this Wednesday, our friend Darrell left this world. I wanted to take some time this week to pay tribute to the man by collecting songs by artists that were meaningful to him, and some stories from the people who loved him.

To learn more about non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and other blood cancers, or to make a donation of time or money, please visit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society website (lls.org in the US). If you don't have time or money to spare, donations of blood, platelets, and plasma can improve and extend the lives of those with blood cancers. I know they made a big difference to my mom when she had leukemia.

Also incredibly valuable and important is getting on your national stem cell (or bone marrow) registry (Canada's registry, the US registry). You may never be called on as a match, but the more people who are registered, the better the odds of someone surviving blood cancer. Registry is easy and painless, and donation is simpler and less invasive than it's ever been. A heartfelt thank you to all those who donate regularly, and are on the registry; you give us more time with our loved ones, and that's a gift beyond measure.

I have two shows I still need to do post on (one from Valentine's, and one from last week), and the two remaining episodes for Quiet Storm haven't happened yet. This one's out of order, and I have some catching up to do, but things should be back on track soon.

I got knocked on my butt last week by a really bad migraine (presumably due to Hurricane Ian) so this week's show is actually the show I'd been planning to do last week. It's a first, in that it's three separate segments. The first one is on Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman whose tragic and preventable death on September 16th has spurred worldwide protest. The second segment honours Truth & Reconciliation Day (Orange Shirt Day), which was September 28th. The final segment is a brief look at some of Coolio's best stuff, to acknowledge his passing on September 26th.

NB: This episode touches on some difficult subjects, such as systemic abuse. Use your best judgement as to what you feel you can handle, and take care of yourself

Pitchfork's top 50 shoegaze albums is also an excellent read (though the pagination chafes my butt - just use an infinite scroll!), and this New York Times article from 1991 provides a cool window into the attitudes of the time.

Holy cannoli, we made it to a hundred episodes! For such a landmark, I decided to choose something that's currently pretty important: Ukraine. I was hoping that the Russian invasion would stop or be stopped before I had a chance to address the theme, but that was not to be so.

I've really only skimmed the surface here, but I tried to choose selections from a number of different genres, some of which are more lighthearted than others. There's a brief discussion of fascism in black metal, which is unpleasant but important because fascism isn't always as obvious as you might think, especially if the context is unfamiliar.

As always, I'm not multilingual so I've tried my best, and apologies for where I've mucked up translations or pronunciations, or missed bits of information. Many of these artists can be found on Bandcamp, Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms, so make sure to support them where you can, especially now.

We're going to hang out in 2003 for a little while longer, so pull out your Tripp pants and your Demonias and let's have some fun. Oh--and also some education. There's at least one artist in this bunch who's got the stank of racism on them, and while it would be easy to just not play their stuff, I don't want to be dishonest about what we were listening to then, and I think it's important to contextualize that in modern terms. Goth is supposed to be welcoming. Goth is political. It always has been. Racism and sexism is contemptible. It's beneath us. We can do better. We need to do better.

For more in-depth information, check out It's Midnight Somewhere's episode on problematic artists, and be sure to watch the excellent piece by Ad·ver·sary and Antigen Shift which I reference in this episode. Coilhouse also has a fantastic post on misogyny in industrial music which I highly recommend.

I'm always excited to see people from around the globe show up in the stats, and while world domination isn't my goal, I'd love to see a pin in every country! Thanks again for listening, and I hope 2022 is good to you.

First of all, I'm very sorry for the delayed upload. The last few days, I was knocked flat by a headache. I also ended up rejigging some of the material; if you listened to the live broadcast, you'll notice that not only did I add a few songs, I removed a few too. And even at that, this sucker runs over two hours.

It's a rather grim episode, inspired by the tragedy of Astroworld earlier this month. I found myself down a pretty bleak rabbit hole, and ended up assembling a list of disasters that have happened at live music events. There are no doubt more, but these are some notable ones from the last century.

After an unintended three-week hiatus, we're back! The mic cacked out halfway through the live broadcast and I had to re-record all the dialogue between songs, which was complicated by the too-loud air show happening right.over.my.head (and the reason why I sound so nonplussed in much of this episode). So, apologies for the hiatus and the delay, but without any further ado, this week, we have a brief retrospective on Lee "Scratch" Perry, who passed away on August 29th. The length and breadth of the man's career make it impossible to cover adequately in a single two-hour block, but I sure did my best.

Last week, we were looking at how Public Enemy's collaboration with Anthrax set the stage for nu-metal, and I touched on the soundtrack for Judgment Night in 1993 (*kept saying 1994 in the recording, apologies) being something that furthered the potential for that genre to happen. Judgement Night also set the stage for further crossovers with metal. This week, we take a look at how the rise of electronic music to popular culture in soundtracks allowed the soundtrack for Spawn to happen, which was full of metal and electronic collaborations, a crossover style that's still alive and kicking.

  • Aerosmith & Run DMC - Walk This Way
  • Jesus Jones - International Bright Young Thing
  • Ministry - Thieves
  • Helmet & House Of Pain - Just Another Victim
  • Biohazard & Onyx - Judgment Night

On this week's episode, I talk about not being okay in the midst of the ongoing pandemic.

Also, this is the first show with the new mic, and new software! At this point, I stopped using BUTT and moved to Mixxx. New software means growing pains, and there are some odd moments here and there because I kept forgetting to push the talk button, which would create echoes due to the latency on the mic and the output. Chalk it up to a learning curve ;)

On this week's episode, an ode to music; songs that'll make you boogie. Still the basic setup, so yeah, in addition to hearing my cat G yelling in the background, you'll also hear me singing. Sorry about that :P

On this episode of the FNPS, personal theme songs as submitted by friends. Still working with the open-air setup, but I think the mic was on its way by this point!

The first episode of the Friday Night Parkdale Special! I had a week of lockdown to figure out how to do this, so the original tech setup was very much cobbled together: An older HP laptop, its onboard mic, Spotify, and BUTT as the broadcasting tool. The audio is by no means professional, but everyone starts somewhere, and the main objective was to play some music for my friends so we could still feel connected in a tumultuous time.

This show's theme is Canadian tunes, but I promise two things: No Bryan Adams, and no Sarah McLachlan sad-animals song.
